I was really excited to try this place due to the good reviews and ton of veggie options. I went with the vegetarian burrito. The fillings were all delicious, especially the cactus and rice was well seasoned. I was a bit disappointed that the burrito wasn't hand held when I ordered togo and was more enchilada style. I had salsa at home which went well but also would have liked some more sauce/salsa included on the side or in the burrito. Next time will be back to try the tacos read more

First time here. We stopped in for dinner on a Thursday night. It's located in a stripmall. Big windows on the front that bring in evening (westerly) sun. It's set up to order at the counter, they give you a number, and then bring out your drinks and food. When we arrived we were greeted by a super friendly staffer. Since it was our first time she explained the process, told us we could open up a tab, which allowed us to get drinks and guac while we decided on the rest of our order. Our drinks, a Margarita and Paloma were both very good. Generous pours, with interesting seasoned salt on the glasses. They had brought us a small complimentary basket of chips, with some Salsa. The Guacamole that we ordered came with another batch of warm chips. The Guac was was good (not great). We like it a bit chunkier, and it didn't taste "just made fresh". After a short wait, our food came out. We got a "Uno Dos Tres", with Empanada, Tamale, and Enchilada. Each of those items was very good. The favorite, Beef Empanada was larger than we are used to, deep fried?, with some guajillo cream that was delicious. The Carnitas was also very good too. It came it hot, very tender, and a good portion (took home leftovers). Throughout the entire meal, the staff/servers checked on us, got us additional napkins, and some waters. Very attentive for having counter ordering. With the exception of the Guac, the meal was excellent. Definitely come back again. read more

Great place in the suburbs in Pewaukee for dining with your friends. I went here during late afternoon In the winter. Great food! Nice presentation for food. Has vegetarian options. I didn't see any gluten free specific options but would be nice to indicate it on the menu. The place was a little busy but we didn't have a problem finding a table. My wife and I recently moved to Waukesha and have been excited to explore local dining options, particularly in search of an excellent Mexican restaurant. Unfortunately, The Spanish Traveler did not meet our expectations. During our lunch visit, we ordered chicken quesadillas to share, and each selected a chimichanga (one steak, one beef). The chicken quesadillas were well-prepared and flavorful, though they were served with only a very small drop of sour cream on the plate. At $16, we expected a bit more in terms of both portion and presentation. The chimichangas, while nicely plated, were much smaller than what we've typically experienced at other Mexican restaurants. At a combined cost of $71 for our lunch (receipt attached for reference), I was surprised by the modest portion sizes. However, what truly sealed our decision not to return was the handling of a simple request. My wife asked for additional sour cream, and we were informed there would be an extra charge of $1. After spending $71 on a meal, being told we would need to pay an additional dollar for what amounts to a very small condiment felt unreasonable and left a poor impression. In my view, a business should be focused on building relationships and loyalty, especially with new customers. Charging a premium for a minimal cost item after a substantial meal purchase felt pennywise and dollar foolish. It may have saved the restaurant a few cents today, but it cost them our future business. Waukesha offers many Mexican dining options, and I'm confident we will find a restaurant that values its customers' experience more thoughtfully. Would you expect to pay an additional dollar for a small amount of sour cream after spending $71 on lunch? I personally would not--and didn't. read more

I really wish I could give 3.5 stars. The setup of this place is wildly inefficient, but it's hard to take off a full star because the food is delicious. All orders are taken at the counter and when I was there it was just one woman taking orders. The entire time I was there, the line was out the door. It moves slow because there are lots of options, most things can be customized with the meat, and the menu is hard to see unless you pull it up on your phone. Once you order you take your number back to your table, grab any drinks, and wait for your food to be brought out to you - it's a strange mix of table and counter service. Food comes out as it's ready. For a table of four my family's food came out 15 minutes before mine was done. I went over to the serving station to inquire and was greeted with a look of disdain. Apparently it's not polite to inquire when your family is nearly done and you haven't even received a thing. When you finish you have to take your number back up the counter, keep it mind it's still just one person, and checkout to finalize your bill. Supposedly, this is so you can keep a tab going, but it's not the type of environment that you'd stay all night. So now to the food. The chips that arrive when you sit down are quite nice - a light crunch and a little salt. Wasn't a huge fan of of the salsa. In the spirit of trying things, I had the three choice combo plate. The tostada was a little hard to break apart and eat, but the toppings piled on top made it worth it. The taquito had a perfectly crispy crunch on the outside and packed with meat on the inside. It probably could've used a little dipping sauce. The best item for me was the empanada - crunchy on the outside and light and airy on the inside. It also had toppings over the top to add a bit more dimension. As is, I recommend you order ahead or delivery if it's possible to avoid the chaotic service. Certainly the best mix of Latin American food you will get in the area. read more

When you walk in the restaurant is cutely decorated for the holidays and such a warm and inviting atmosphere. The staff are extremely friendly and knowledgeable and though you do have to go up to the counter to order they deliver your food to the table. Throughout our visit they stopped by to clear the table and ask if we needed anything else. We ordered many things off the menu and the food was good all around. We ordered the "Dos" with an enchilada with choice of verde sauce and chorizo plus a burrito with mole sauce and al pastor. My partner had the "Baja Tijuana" which features steak and shrimp. All entrees can be made a meal which included a soft drink and 2 sides. We tried the corn bread with guava sauce which was excellent, fried plantains were more on the bitter side as expected if you've had authentic plantains, old world (Mexican) rice was tasty, roadside corn (street corn) was quite limey which I enjoyed. Quality and taste is excellent, 5 stars. I gave 4 stars due to the "Dos" options being on the smaller side and it's a bit of an interesting restaurant flow, you have to walk up and order, get you're own drinks and walk up to check out. This is the best Mexican food I've had in years - and I'm kicking myself for not trying this restaurant sooner. I've lived nearby for years, and the outside of the building does it no favors - but once you walk in, wow!! Love the decor. But the star of the show was the food. I was blown away - everything was amazing. Special shout out to the carnitas, which I got in a taco, omg. You can just tell it's all homemade, and just so good!! The only downside is that it is pretty pricey - but I'd rather pay a little more for such excellent food, than pay less for the absolutely mediocre Mexican food at other joints around here. It is a really decent, quasi, fast food place that seems more like a proper restaurant. It's a Mexican fare joint that has one order up at the counter then the food is quickly zipped over to your table. I've eaten here twice and both times I was pleased. I liked the white queso dip with grilled onions and the chimichangas. The Spanish Traveler is hidden in the back of a strip mall but worth the drive out west. And, it's close to the excellent Mom's Kitchen across the street in case you want Thai or sushi. Waukesha is growing up and getting some better cuisines. Bravo. read more

The Spanish Travler is gotten lost in translation. We started coming here almost 10 years ago back when it was Taco Amego and it was fantastic, but with the reorganization and rebranding to The Spanish Travler it just hasn't been the same. Now to be honest we have eaten here in several weeks, tried but when it's an hour wait for carry-out I going somewhere else. Tonight we got here early and maybe because of the rain (people staying home) we were able to walk right in. So on to the "lost in translation" part of my post. When we found Taco Amego the food had flavor, heat (but not just for the sake of being hot), and was more traditional Mexican/Central America fare, but tonight all this seamed to be missing. My Caritas (with orange & onion) was flavorless roast pork with sautéed onions and a slice of orange on top. Sorry to say, we are going to start looking for a new travel agent, the drive from Brookfield to Pewaukee is just not worth it anymore. read more

Friendly service- fantastic food-delish drinks.... And so out of the ordinary for a strip mall restaurant. Find a table and sit down.... Grab a menu or find it via your phone.... When you've decided what to eat- get up to order at the register... they'll give you a number and deliver the food. My recommendation is to stop at register BEFORE sitting down- and order a drink. My go to is a Paloma. Probably the best one I have found around- no, I know it's the best one. I want them to come home with me and make them for me after work every day. - oh and order either guac or elote queso.... Or both (delish). Sometimes the elote is spicier than other times- but ALWAYS tasty. You can eat and drink and chat while you decide from the many many exciting dishes. I think we've almost tried everything- almost. Shredded beef empenada- outstanding. Uno dos tres is a good place to start- pick 1 to 3 items ... smaller portions to get a taste of what you might want on your next visit.... Or the macho cuattro works well too. I've enjoyed the la bamba with salmon... The a la diabla is SPICY... and so so good. You can't go wrong here....just don't tell anyone else about this place.... If not you have to stand in line to pay when you are ready to leave. This is a nice restaurant with great food, why do the fast food service? Stopped in around 7pm on a Friday and it wasn't too crazy busy when we ordered but the food seemed to take a long time to come out. The ordering process was a bit confusing. You order at the front counter and then they bring you the food but then you have to go up and pay at the end not when you order. With a menu as large as they have it would be better to have servers instead to take the orders. I was disappointed by the size of the burrito I ordered after paying over $17 for a burrito with no sides. The quality and taste were good but i've gotten food just as good, if not better from taco trucks and many other Mexican restaurants and the portions were much better. They're trying to make it fancier but you order at the counter and take a number to your table and after they bring it out you, you have to get up and ask for anything else you may need. There is no menu's to grab and look at, just a huge menu on the wall. You also get a small basket of chips and a tiny little amount of salsa. It would be nice to have some hot sauces at the table like most Mexican restaurants. The high prices just don't match what you get in my opinion and the food can be matched many other places for much more reasonable prices. read more

Great food and fast, friendly service. I was part of a group of eight who visited on Friday, May 26. One person managed to grab a table -- which was helpful. I ordered a Rio Grand enchilada. A sizable entre with two sides, and at a reasonable price. All of us were impressed with the quick service, despite it being the dinner hour on a Friday. It's difficult to find really good Mexican food but this restaurant is the real deal. It's a different concept, you order at the front counter, they give you a number and you find a table. Once you are seated, they bring drinks, chips, salsa, and utensils. They serve the food and when you are finished, you bring the number back to the front counter and pay, however this is not a fast food restaurant. I ordered a steak burrito and my wife ordered veggie fajitas. Both dishes were delicious and what I like is that you can choose 2 sides, not just rice and refried beans. The people working here are friendly and efficient. My only complaint is that the veggie fajitas were the same price as fajitas with meat, about $18. I would think that the fajitas without meat would cost less, but not a game changer. read more

I enjoyed an authentic Hispanic burrito that was loaded with steak and topped with Chorizo, beans, tomatoes, cheese and lots of other goodies. On the recommendation of an acquaintance we decided to have dinner at The Spanish Traveler. We were told this was "elevated" Latin food. Hmmm.... I'm not sure what this person's definition of elevated is but I don't think this was it. The first thing that turned us off was having to order at the counter like we were at a fast food restaurant. Thankfully a staff member gave us paper menus to look at so we could take our time deciding what we wanted. Back up to join the line to order. We were given a number for our table and cups so we could serve ourselves soft drinks (still waiting for the "elevated" experience). And then we waited. And waited. And waited some more. At one point someone brought us a little basket of tortilla chips with a tiny side of salsa. The chips are quite hard and they were not salted. The salsa was fine - I prefer a chunky salsa and this was more akin to enchilada sauce. Our food was delivered to our table after about 25 minutes. I had the fish tacos which were quite flavorful, if lacking fish. Seriously...one tiny piece of fish for each taco. The slice of avocado on the taco dwarfed the fish. These were primarily cabbage and sauce tacos. The rice and beans were nothing special and almost cold by the time they reached our table. My husband had the shredded beef enchiladas with a side of rice. He found them to be rather flavorless. The person who brought our entrees said he would bring us additional chips/salsa but we never saw him again. When we finished eating we had to get back in line in order to pay for our meal. What? Why is this a thing? We should have paid at the time we ordered. This is a strange concept when you don't have servers coming to the table to take additional orders for drinks or more food. Was the food filling? Yes. Have I had worse meals? Absolutely. But we spent $55 for two people, no alcohol, no table service to speak of, served ourselves our own sodas, and the food was mediocre. I had high hopes for this place based on the recommendation but we won't be back. read more
