BUCKLE UP FOR THE MARATHON KIDDOS. WE ORDERED SO MUCH FOOD. So my wife and I went with some friends and we decided to split a ton of dishes to compile the ultimate review. So we'll start with an overview and then go dish by dish. Overall the restaurant is clean and quaint. It isn't terribly large so there isn't a ton of privacy between parties, but we didn't mind one bit. The staff was very amiable and accommodating. Now onto the INCREDIBLE food. Peruvian Empanadas: the better of the two types of empanadas. The dough was excellent, filling tasty, and dipping sauce was a nice compliment. Super good. Cheese, chicken, and beef were all great choices. Colombian empanadas: still really good, but we liked the Peruvian more. Papa Rellena: tasty and savory, packed full of creole flavor. Definitely not the same as an empanada, so don't have the same expectations. Crispy Yuca w/ Cheese: this was the one dish we could have down without. They were good, but paled in comparison to the other dishes. Green Tamales: I love tamales and these are definitely not your Mexican tamales. But they were so good. The flavor was unique and quite delicious. Inka Paella: a great Peruvian twist on a Spanish dish. It was my wife's favorite dish and our friends loved it too. Tacu Tacu: This dish blew my socks off! Hands down my favorite dish. I highly recommend getting it with lomo saltado because the flavor was INSANE. I still think about how much I loved this savory, salty dish. 10/10 from me. Drinks: we got the Chica Morada which was a really interesting drink with flavors that made us call it "Christmas in a Cup". We also got the maracuya slush which was AMAZING. Get it. I do not know much about Peruvian food, but what we had at Chef Paz was very good - well seasoned, good portions, and unique combinations of fries and meat. The empanadas were great, though we were surprised by the addition of peas to them with beef. The atmosphere is nice, though a little awkward. You'll find enough room for groups and few booths, but you are close to other tables because of the layout. My favorite Peruvian place in town! A bit far from Milwaukee downtown, located in West Allis, this place has all the good stuff to offer in Peruvian cuisines. We came here during lunch and got seated right away. Our server came to our table and politely enquired if we had been there before. We came here right before visiting Peru this year and loved everything we ordered. We ordered the ceviche, a deviled eggs dish which had a very flavorful sauce, a veg fried rice with veggies and plantins and a chicken dish recommended by the staff. The ceviche was delicious and was we really enjoyed the chicken speciality as well. They have great recommendations if you tell them what kind of food you would like to have in terms of species or meatsz I would love to come here in the evening and try out some of their delicious cocktails ... Oh a good Pisco sour would be just about amazing! Chef Paz is Peruvian in West Allis! This small family-owned restaurant is worth a visit. My son loves this place, and we started out with their fish Ceviche. A different presentation for ceviche than I'm used to, but it was excellent! Lomo Saltado- my son's order, and he loves this dish for good reason. nicely seasoned beef with peppers, onions, served with a couple meaty french fries- a great dish! Seco de Res- my order, I was very pleased with this beef dish with beef chunks with rice and pinto beans. the green cilantro sauce served with everything was incredible. They serve Pisco sours here, and I liked that a larger Spanish speaking group was meeting and dining here, giving it some cred. Comparing the 2 cuisines, we preferred the Peruvian empanadas more because you got more meats and the dough was very interesting. I think it made from plantains. For entrees, we got the paella and steak. The paella was a bit salty for me. I don't eat paella quite often so I'm not sure what it's supposed to taste like. At the time, I felt like the dish was missing something. Additionally, I mixed the paella with the cilantro lime sauce (not sure I was supposed to do that) but their sauce was amazing. The steak was okay. I don't think we liked the rice that much because it had too much water. I'd prefer it to be a bit dry and less salty. My family and I ordered delivery from Chef Paz. Since Peruvian food is relatively new to us we ordered several things to try. We had sides of Fried Yucca, Tostones and Tamal Verde. The Tamal Verde were fantastic. Excellent flavor, complemented by the lightly picked red onions that came with. The other two fried items were good, but suffered from delivery. I'll try them again on site. I had Peruvian Empanadas, cheese, for my meal. For some reason the delivery menu didn't include any of the great vegetarian entrees on the normal menu. The crust was perfect - golden with a nice little salt finish. I recommend these. The other two entrees seemed to be essentially the same, except the Mar Y Tierra included shrimp. But that and the Lomo Saltado were much enjoyed. Both were apparently flavorful and satisfying. For dessert, we shared a Tres Leche Cake. It was light and fluffy and not overly sweet. We love this little family-owned and operated West Allis gem. Very unassuming from the outside but quaint and colorful on the inside. We bring all our friends from out of town here! We go here for the lomo saltado and empanadas (usually cheese. I also love the beef. Not a huge fan of the chicken). That being said, we have tried many things on the menu and none have disappointed. I do very much enjoy the arroz con pollo. Chicha morada, a purple corn and pineapple typical Peruvian drink, is definitely something you should try as well. And the prices can't be beat! The entry to the business is west of the parking lot on the corner. We ate lunch here on a Saturday at 11:30AM. Restaurant was not very busy, but had a cozy inviting atmosphere. Our lunch started out with empanadas for appetizers, which came with a zippy green sauce. My friend ordered the Lomo a la Huancaina, which she (a chef) said was fantastic. I ordered the Bistec a lo Pobre, which was also fantastic. It came with sweet plantains, which were cooked to perfection. Portion sizes were generous, and the dishes were served quickly and hot. Both steaks were cooked to the requested doneness. The restaurant definitely picked up around 12:30PM, while we were socializing. I would definitely come early to ensure a seat! O.M.G. What was supposed to be a night at the movies turned into a "hey, what's close to home?" to finding this amazing gem of a restaurant. From the internet I've learned that this place isn't particularly unknown to people but wow - I can't believe people don't talk about it more often! This place is so good I'm thinking about coming here at least once a week! It's genuinely some of the best food (in general) I've ever had and incredibly top notch Peruvian food (I don't think I can make the claim to knowing if it is the best ever Peruvian - that's not my typical cuisine - but I definitely think it is!). I had the mixed fish ceviche as hot as it could go. The spice level was burningly intense, made my lips tingle for quite a while, and was basically the best thing I've had in a long time. The fish was well cut, the flavors were amazing, and the spice level they could make the dish was incredible. For someone used to "Midwestern spicy" (i.e. not spicy at all) this was a refreshing change of pace and I would almost definitely consider getting a lower level of spice next time (which is rare for me since I always love dialing it all the way up!). I then followed up with the Inka Paella. The flavors were amazing. Flat. Out. Amazing. The rice was delicious, the mussels they included were generous. The amount of seafood was abundant for the price point. I finished my plate and despite not being hungry I would definitely have ordered a second round, or third round, or fourth round... if the food hadn't been so good that I wanted to just go home and go to sleep immediately after. This place is absolutely the real deal with Peruvian comfort food. You'll sweat. Your taste buds will be brought to a whole new world. You'll want more. You'll definitely be going back. The reason I don't give this a five star? I had to wear my jacket inside. I'm not sure if it's because of the fluctuating weather at the moment but it was incredibly chilly inside the restaurant itself - and the few personal space heaters spread around the restaurant was not really the best at keeping the inside warm. Just by luck, we saw this interesting restaurant and decided to go there for dinner. It was wonderful. My husband had a rib dish (Chaufa) with the best fried rice we have had in ages. We had a Peruvian cocktail with passion fruit, Pisco Sour. We said it was kind of like an alcoholic orange Julius. I had an authentic Peruvian chicken dish (Aji de Gallina Gratin) that had a cream sauce and a white cheese baked crispy & bubbly over top. We also tried a couple appetizers (green Tamal and crispy yuca with cheese,) and ate everything and were satisfied & stuffed! i'm not sure what I would get next time as I really want to try a lot of things. Definitely the ribs and that rice was wonderful. The staff was very nice - Raul was a rock star, interesting and sweet. I would definitely go there again and highly recommend to try it. Wow. Now, I know that Chef Paz isn't a secret to most of you but this week was my first visit and I. Can't. Wait. To. Come. Back. Seriously, the Mister and I were both blown away by the flavors coming out of this kitchen. We started with empanadas (one beef, one chicken - just $2/ea) and you can tell they are made fresh. They're packed with taste and good quality ingredients and served with a fabulous cilantro sauce. For mains, I opted for arroz con pollo which is a pounded and grilled chicken cutlet with tasty seasoned rice and a "dazzling cilantro sauce" per the menu. That isn't hyperbole - this food is full of flavor and you can honestly taste that it's made with care. The mister had their version of surf and turf - tenderloin chunks and shrimp sautéed with veggies. Again, a total winner - the meat was super tender and just a ton of flavor all around. Service is friendly and helpful - lots of family helping out and making you feel at home. The inside is smaller but bright and fresh. Portions are large and prices are small. There isn't a single thing I'd change about Chef Paz. It's a wonderful family run place that puts love into everything they make. Chef Paz is one of our go-to places to bring friends when they come visit Milwaukee. It's a cozy, family-owned restaurant with unique Peruvian entrees and shareables. My husband and I love the empanadas with the accompanying green sauce, and our dining mates often buy a tub of said green sauce to take home. We have tried a variety of entrees in the many times we have dined here including the lomo saltado, arroz con pollo, chicken pot gratin, fried rice with shrimp, tacu tacu, and jalea. For first-timers looking to explore the menu, I would recommed the tacu tacu or chicken pot gratin. The tacu tacu comes with an interesting canary "bean pancake" that pairs nicely with a seasoned meat of choice. The chicken pot gratin is a creamy single-serving casserole like dish served in a cast iron skillet topped with bubbling cheese. The jalea is also a great dish to share, and we were blown away by the portion size when we first laid eyes on the cornucopia of crispy fried seafood and yuca fries. Everything of course tastes even better when dipped in the green sauce! My only criticism of Chef Paz is probably an issue of my own personal taste. I feel that some dishes like the arroz con pollo, while delicious, are a bit too salty for my taste. My husband was also disappointed in his order of the fried rice with shrimp that turned out to be more simple than he had hoped. It was a great shrimp fried rice dish, but the creole flavor and "fusion of peruvian and chinese" was a bit lost on us. So happy I finally ate dinner here. We stopped in during the week for dinner. It's a small restaurant. We were seated immediately and the waitress asked if it was our first time. For starters we ordered one of each Peruvian empanada. I absolutely loved the chicken, my boyfriend loved the beef and the cheese was delicious as well. Next we got a small order of ceviche which was excellent. For our meals I wanted to go traditional so I got the lomo saltado and my boyfriend ordered the Jalea. The food was great. If you ever have the chance, I encourage you to look up the very intriguing culinary history of Peruvian cuisine, which includes chifa- the fusion of Chinese and Peruvian culinary traditions to produce many of the popular dishes today- lomo saltado, arroz chaufa...as a Chinese kid who grew up in an area with fantastic availability of Latin cuisine (and close Peruvian family friends), it's no wonder that both the flavors of chifa and traditional Peruvian dishes feel as much like home as does the food of my ethnic background. Chef Paz provides a variety of these, as well as many other entrees, in a comforting and homey setting that pays homage (notice the sign on the door!) to the immigrant tradition that both created many of these now well-loved dishes and brought them for us to enjoy in the US. Chef Paz is a small restaurant located in a very random area of West Allis- blink and you'll miss it. Named for the head chef (who, by the way, does not hold back on the hilarious Facebook page for the restaurant), it is cozy with just a few tables and booths. Come during an off time or make a reservation if you want a seat! Thankfully, they have their own parking lot to the side with an ample number of spaces. The interior definitely hasn't been renovated in years, with flowery print all over the seating and newspaper acclaims adorning the walls, but there's a certain charm to it that I appreciate. It's a great restaurant for families as well. I simply can't bypass empanadas on a menu when they're available, so the Peruvian empanadas [$2.50] have consistently been a must-order item for me. They are stuffed with cheese, chicken, or beef; I've tried the latter two and enjoyed them both- writing this review after eating a chicken empanada, coincidentally. Also, the chicken one has raisins and I love fruit in my savory foods! Most entrees and appetizers are served with an addictive aji verde, which is refreshing and garlicky and oh-so-good. My only complaint is that I wish we got more, because I could eat it with a spoon! They also have a lot of other traditional favorites like anticuchos and papa a la huancaina, which I hope to try in the future. Call in or check their FB page for their daily lunch specials, which are very budget-friendly. Entree portions are not huge but I would say they're just right- for my fellow big eaters, you may not leave with leftovers, but you will certainly leave pleasantly full. The jibarito [$10.99 with ribeye] is a must-try if you're a fellow plantain lover- imagine an In-N-Out burger where the bun is two fried plantains and it's a ribeye instead of a patty, and you're about there. Conceptually it sounds great; the one I had was a bit of a miss as it was a bit dry and the ribeye was tough, but I would like to give it another go. The tacu tacu [$17.99 with lomo saltado] is a soft patty of rice and canary beans served with your choice of protein or veggies and an egg on top. It's phenomenal, and a good way to branch out from the popular lomo saltado. Speaking of which, the lomo saltado [$14.99] is also great; it's a dish I grew up eating very frequently and I liked Chef Paz's interpretation a lot. There's a distinct smoky flavor from the wok hei in both the beef and the rice. This is a rightfully well-known dish and I would recommend it if you're new to Peruvian food. The dish I crave the most often is the inka paella [$16.99], a positively delicious dish of tender rice and seafood. It's definitely not the same as a Spanish paella, but I think the Peruvian style is just as good, and adding the aji verde is a perfect complement that provides a full profile of flavors. This dish does run a little salty; as Your Resident Future Hypertensive Yelper I love it, but for those who are more sensitive, try having a sweet drink on the side. Which is my transition into... Drinks! The menu isn't very large but they offer some of the popular options such as pisco sour, chicha morada, and maracuya in half- and full-pitcher sizes. The maracuya [$7 for half pitcher] is lovely and enough for 2-3 to share; it's a little more sweet and a little less tart than I anticipated, but it goes very well with the food. I wanted to try the chicha morada, but they forgot my order of that, so next time! It seems to be a family-run business and the service is always friendly, albeit slightly understaffed. That's an issue in many restaurants in the wake of COVID-19, though, and the servers who are there try their best. My partner was craving fried yucca and we found out that Chef Paz is the only restaurant in the Milwaukee area who serves it , so in we went! Having been a huge, HUGE fan of Cuban and Puerto Rican food, I had saved Chef Paz in my bookmarks for quite some time, especially after seeing their Arroz con Polla. My partner and I used to go to a Puerto Rican restaurant every other day in Hoboken, NJ called La Casa so we were happy to find something similar after moving here. I got the Lomo Saltado, something I haven't had in YEARS (last time was at a Peruvian restaurant in LA (Mario's), and my partner got the Arroz con Pollo with a side of fried yucca. The dishes were both delicious, especially with their cilantro sauce, YUM. I regret not taking any pictures before we completely destroyed the dishes because they plates the rice in such a cute way. I had expected the Lomo Saltado to have a bigger portion but retrospectively, it was a perfect amount. My partner said that he wished the chicken was grilled even more but he said he'll request it the next time we go. There is a serious lack of Central and South American restaurants in Milwaukee. I often crave the food I ate while studying in Costa Rica. When I looked online at the Chef Paz menu, my heart skipped a beat.... While I had never had Peruvian food, it sounded very similar to what I longed for. So we drove into the heart of the dirty. Dirty Stallis, that is. If you are not familiar with the area it may seem a little rough but it's just the Stallis charm. We started with appetizers: all the empanadas ($2 each) - cheese, chicken, and beef - and Yuquitas Cuzco ($8). The empanadas were fantastic!!!! I loved all of them, and one could easily make a meal of empanadas and a side dish. The Yuquitas Cuzco was very interesting: it was 3 fried stuffed yucca balls and each one had something different inside - cheese, beef, and a mushroom sauce. For entrees I ordered the Tacu Tacu "Chef Paz" ($15). Holy smokes is this delicious!!!! The presentation was amazing! The rice and bean side was in a pyramid shape, which was really cool. The tenderloin was to die for, and there was an egg! An egg seriously makes everything even better. I also had to get a side of the plantains because it is a fairly uncommon side item to find and I love love LOVE plantains! These were sweet and cooked well - they were firm and chewy, just how they should be. My fiancee ordered the Fried Rice with Seafood/Arroz Chaufa de Mariscos ($16). It was exactly as described..... fried rice with seafood. The portion was huge. For us, who had never had Peruvian food, this dish was reminiscent of an Asian dish. It was good, but held nothing to my Tacu Tacu dish. Our friend ordered the Triology ($38) which is ceviche, paella, and jalea. The ceviche is acid cooked white fish, which was delightful. The other two were a rice dish and then a mountain of fried items including fish, yucca, and various seafood. It was an certainly an experience. It is a lot of food - enough to share for 2-3 people for dinner. I also had to try the Chica Morada, a fantastic non-alcoholic drink that is absolutely splendid. I need more Chica Morada in my life! The service was very friendly and attentive. The interior is small and colorful painting adorn the walls. Overall, we had a wonderful dining experience and the food was fantastic.
