Ok, Friday night out with the hubby. We are new here and just finished looking at a house with the Realtor and made a split decision for a 'splurge' dinner. We've been in a hotel for a few weeks and tried the 'normal' local restaurants but we were saving this one and a few others. My husband and I have a joke about the crime of a nice restaurant serving fake oil based butter. Not here. Good sign #1. Waitress arrived and nice, we got glasses of wine (extensive menu) and I ordered my Escargot right away. No question I was shocked to think I would find my European delicacy here! Yup! Arrived quite quickly with the wine, some nice slices of the Ciabatta bread they also brought for the table. YUMM-O. Just like I remember from Germany. Mains: Lobster (MP) for me and the Foxy cut of the Prime Rib for hubby. Baked Potato and the Cheesy potatoes. All was delicious! And the HUGE salad bar was lovely and included. Now, we opted on dessert to go. Crème Brûlée and Key Lime Cheesecake. Current note, Brûlée tasteless but Key Lime delightful. End. Our bill was $240. My 16-20 oz. Australian Lobster Tail cost $135. Yup, MP [smh]. Sad part, I got two apparently to make the ounces, and it was meaty, but pretty dry and not much flavor, not sweet. It was a crowded Saturday night and the place was packed.. however, there was literally a woman standing there and she said nothing, not I'll be right with you nada... A good prime rib and seafood restaurant. Unfortunately, the prime rib is not a top-grade prime cut of meat, but more towards a choice cut. It did not have that "melts-in-your-mouth" texture often found at other places, such as Lawry's or The San Franciscan in Los Angeles. Their seafood is cooked to perfection, and the lobster was not overcooked, unlike what I have experienced at the steakhouse chain, Fleming's. The King Crab legs are juicy and not dried out. They offer excellent appetizers, including escargot, calamari, and more. Escargot lacked sufficient garlic. Dinner includes a trip to the salad bar, where you can pile your plate high, but only once. Their selection of desserts was extensive, which included crème brûlée, tiramisu, cheesecake, various cakes, and apple pie. The service was slow, but it was due to the place being extremely busy. This restaurant comes highly recommended, and I can see why! First, this is the place to have the Alaskan King Crab! They are amazingly big, sweet and moist. We couldn't finish an entire serving because there was so much crab meat! Plus the crab was absolutely delicious. This is the best place we have ever had King Crab, to include restaurants we tried in Anchorage. It is at market prices, so you may want to ask prices before ordering. For us it was pricey but it was absolutely worth it. We also had the prime rib and King Crab combo. The prime rib was also good, but we concentrated on trying to finish the crab. Next time we are just going with the crab because of the generous portion and it's delicious! I loved my experience at the turtle club! First impression, the staff was so friendly and welcoming, our server gave us great recommendations for things to do locally. The crab was incredible. The price was shocking, but I understand the market price varies based on many factors. $240 was crazy... but I will say I can still remember the taste of the juicy sweet succulent crab even days later, one of the greatest things I've ever eaten. If you have the money, it's worth it. The salad bar was huge with so many delicious toppings. Fairbanks doesn't have that many restaurants, so we tried to choose a place with a lot of reviews and a high rating. Since we were in Alaska, we really wanted to try king crab and salmon. The restaurant looked like a simple local spot, so we assumed the prices would be reasonable. We ordered fish and chips, soup, and 1.5 lb of king crab. However, the king crab alone came out to $240. We were served three crab legs. The food itself was definitely delicious. The king crab was fresh and full of meat, and the fish in the fish and chips was also very fresh and tasty. However, it was probably the most expensive king crab we've ever had at any restaurant. Looking at other reviews, it seems like no one else paid as much as we did, which makes us wonder if we were overcharged. The menu did say "market price," though. The salad bar was not in great condition. The vegetables didn't seem very fresh, so you had to pick carefully. Lance got the lobster combo and here is where the experience kind of took a turn for me even tho it was still pretty good the lobster was severely over cooked almost to the point it was kind of that mush. The steak was undercooked we asked for medium rare and it came very rare. And the rice pilaf was just kinda not good. It was unusually sweet but just kind of had a weird taste. The service was nice tho. And I guess I just kind of had an issue that when you order dessert they bring a tray with all 8 or 9 items they have which is great except they are plastic it's the real deal so for food safety they are bringing food out showing it to the table then whatever the guest doesn't pick they bring it back to the kitchen and then bring it out again for the next guest to look at. It's sooooo unsanitary from a food handlers perspective. Not sure how the manager thought this was something that would be considered a good idea but to each their own. After our cruise on the Discovery III on the Chena River, we drove to the Turtle Club for dinner. My wife had the halibut chunks with a baked potato and I had a perfectly cooked prime rib with a baked potato. We both started our meals with a trip to their salad bar. Everything was delicious. The glasses of wine - with a large variety to choose from and many from Alaska- run between $9-12 a glass. I hate writing reviews for any place that I do not consider to be exceptional. In this case, I'll do it though just to help people who aren't familiar with the place to know what to expect. Not pleasant when spending upwards of $100/person for a "fine dining" restaurant.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] This is not fine dining. The baked potatoes come out wrapped in aluminum foil - not fine dining. The food is just placed on a plate with no regard for plating techniques, not fine dining. View in back is of items that are eyesores. Again, not fine dining. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Back deck chairs are plastic chairs, not fine dining.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Salad bar is no more than just a salad bar. [[HIGHLIGHT]]On our way out, we noticed that the place has a very nice front patio with a nice view of the hills, sooo much nicer than the back deck![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The front deck is for the bar. So we thought, "wow, maybe the trick is just to eat at the bar in the future and sit on the nicer deck." We decided to have an after dinner drink to enjoy the much better view than we had with our very expensive dinner. [[HIGHLIGHT]]We asked if dogs were allowed on the front deck and were told by the bar tender that they were. We brought our dog in from the car to the deck and had a lovely time on the front deck.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We went back a couple of weeks later, intending to just sit on the front deck with our dog and have cocktails and a snack. [[HIGHLIGHT]]This time, the person serving us, not sure if she was an owner, a manager, a bar tender or a server, told us they don't allow dogs on the front deck.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] She told us they were making an exception for us at the moment because nobody else was on the deck. We asked if they had changed their policy, explaining we were there just a couple of weeks prior and the deck was full of people and we were told by the restaurant's staff that the dog was allowed. She just got irritated with us and was extremely rude to the point of actually being mean. She said no dogs have ever been allowed and never will be. Ok, just tell us that in the first place and be consistent. We were never pushing the dog on them, simply asked if they were allowed, we were told yes then when bringing him back, we were told they were never allowed. The tone from the woman was as though first, we were lying and secondly, absolute irritation. Really uncalled for. Given the cost of this place, I just cannot recommend it considering the food is mediocre, the view from the back restaurant patio is just plain ugly, and this one staff member, and I emphasize that it was only one, the rest of the staff were fantastic, but one not only rude, but actually mean staff member can so affect the customer's experience in a negative way that they will lose a customer for life that otherwise could have been a loyal customer for life. I realize the dog issue isn't one that many diners will deal with so take that part of our experience with a grain of salt and only consider it if it affects you, just don't bring your dog. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Sit on the front bar deck in the summer months and order food from the bar. It's the same menu, just much nicer view.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Don't expect a truly fine dining experience, but do expect fine dining prices. You can call this place prime rib heaven. The menu features different sizes whether you're not that hungry or starving. They have a variety of appetizers which all sounded really good. We started with the escargot - which was seasoned very well in a garlic sauce and came with a lemon to get some more flavor on there. For the prime rib I had the turtle cut which I didn't think was going to be that big but was A LOT, so much that I couldn't finish it. I ordered medium well and it was cooked to perfection. A lot of people might not like it, but the fat was so tender and flavorful, I just kept eating even though I was full. When we showed up a few minutes before our reservation. We were told we had a table in the back, which would be available when the current table is almost leaving. Not the best way to start off but we were ok with it. Why? Because our server Emily was a rock star. She had a large party and three tables. And in no way we felt like we were playing second fiddle to her larger table. The drinks were ok. Typical bar fare. The food or I should say the prime rib was the main attraction and main event. The cuts were decently sized but was more cooked for a medium. But their medium temp for a prime rib may be different. It was medium well but the prime rib was seasoned just right. The baked potato was had the perfect temperature. Getting back to the prime rib I ate the entire thing. It was very tasty. The desserts were pretty good as well. The raspberry donut cheesecake was the best out of the chocolate Mousse and the creme Brulee could not keep up for the rich and tasty notes here. Not to say the creme brulee was bad. Totally our fault for not asking what the market price was, but we were shocked to see 1.5 lbs of crab for $180 and 20 oz lobster $130. The crab itself was delicious and a large portion. The lobster, however, was disappointing. Two large tails were impressive but they were tough and flavorless. Maybe they were overcooked. With king crab currently in the $40-60 pound range I never dreamed we would be charged 3-4 times that amount. We had gone to multiple places and this is the best value, the cook was perfect also, didn't even need to use the claw crackers. The prime rib was large and definitely shareable.
