This bakery has been my neighborhood bakery for years. They bumped it up from pan dulce and sale tacos, tamales and more now. The prices are not expensive and they have delicious tasting baked goods. My favorite item is the coconut red cake in my picture. I typically eat it with a cold glass of milk. They also have breads and take both card and cash. read more

They ran out and didn't make anymore on time. They were not busy, I was the only one there. She said I would need to wait for cake to cool down. Nope, not waiting another 20 minutes in addition to the 25 minutes driving to get there. Won't be back. Love Chica's. The glazed-cinnamon twist is my kryptonite. I thought cinnamon rolls were the pinnacle, but this twist is WOW. The cinnamon rolls are also very good and I'd be lying if I said I haven't gotten both at once. Alway enjoy the selection, variety and availability throughout the day. Only "negative" I would give is the price. Chica's pricing is well-above that of a local panaderia, which can be a bit shocking given the location's area. Still, the products are alway good and folks are excited for them when brought to a gathering. There's something to be said about price=quality and consistency. read more

I visited this donut shop for the first time and wanted to share my experience. I purchased a dozen donuts and two chocolate cream-filled donuts. I didn't realize that the dozen only includes glazed donuts, and that any specialty donut--chocolate or otherwise--costs an additional $2 each. It would've been helpful to have that clearly explained beforehand. The two chocolate cream-filled donuts were placed in a small brown bag, and unfortunately the chocolate coating stuck to the bag. By the time I opened it, the donuts looked messy and misshapen, almost like hotdog buns with a slit through the middle. In terms of taste and presentation, the donuts just weren't for me. I truly hope the business succeeds, but based on this visit, I don't think I'll be returning. read more

Stopped by to try the tamales and barbacoa. Prices are a little high at $20 for a dozen of tamales. The staff were friendly but uncomfortably pushy. The tamales were not bad but weren't good either we ate them but wouldn't return. The barbacoa was a little pricey at $15 a lb being that we ended up with a bunch of tomato chunks . I feel like this should have been mentioned at some point for the people that don't eat tomatoes. The barbacoa was kind of flavorful but full of grease . The service is okay, but staff are pushy in selling the "y mas" products. If I wanted anything else, I would have ask but I don't need to be asked multiple times. The ambiance is a bit off putting, with too many selections, its hard to know what's fresh and what is merely a display item that should have been dumped days ago. read more

This is the closest bakery to me. I really wanted to love this place as it's a small business. Service is always great but sometimes can be pushy with asking if we want other items when we say we have come for this or that. The chicken tamales is probably the only thing I'll come back for. They were fresh went I came to get them on Thanksgiving. Very tasty! I'm so sorry Chica.. I'd have to say I will not come back for sweet bread. I walked in and there were tons of delicious looking pastries, perfumes, and a few jewelry pieces (as the "Y Más" implies). Looked like a classic set up. Unfortunately, the staff did not know whether their pastry was guava or strawberry. That was concerning to me. I asked for a tres leches. I eagerly went to enjoy it when I arrived home and noticed it was NOT tres leches. The amount of mislabeling and not knowing their own products is concerning to me. It's also a huge health risk. Was a much better place back when it was Chico's. Now it's nothing but stale pastries. They have gone all across the board selling tacos and others foods besides baked goods. The new owner never found their gift when it came to baking after all these years. At night they rent out two sheds to ppl who sit in their parking lot along with one of the worst tasting food trucks I have ever found in San Antonio. I give this place 1star and that is still a high rating in my opinion . The signage outside is what gets it a 1. The pan dulce was hard and dry tasted like two day old pan, not fresh tasting at all. They had a lot of sweets to choose from,we got a variety and not one was soft or fresh tasting . The price is so high I paid 32 and some change for about 9/10 pieces of pan dulce , a personal size pecan pie and two cups of atole. I know prices have increased but I feel robbed when I left . I have been coming to this bakery since it was Chicos. I know the prices have been rising in cost, but tonight would be the last time I spend a dime at this place. I was charged $37 for the following pieces of pan dulce and a half dozen (6) of tamales that were cold! I asked the lady to explain how much each piece was, and she said the tamales were 10 dollars and the pan dulce was $26!!! I've gone to other places and have gotten a lot more pieces for under $20. End of an era, I guess! I grew up in San Antonio and lived on Zarzamora as a kid in the 1970s. My parents would always take us to the bakery especially during the holidays. We'd also always take family there for authentic, great-tasting pan dulce so that they'd always associate the delicious baked goods with San Antonio. I've continued the tradition and would always go there for my holiday sweet breads for the past 40 years. I went there about one year ago and the pan was still good. Unfortunately, those days seem to be over! Chica didn't learn the lessons from Chico. The bakery used to be called Chico's bakery up until about a year ago. I was surprised this past Thanksgiving to see that it changed its name to Chica's. I just figured that Chico might've been a family member who passed the business on to someone else in the family...While the selection was as extensive as it was when the bakery was called Chico's, the more than $100 worth of pan dulce and galletas that we purchased for family coming in from out of town was very disappointing. We'd talked the pan dulce up too much and had to apologize to our out-of-town guests for the lack of quality. Having tasted almost everything in the past, the current recipes seem to have been completely revamped. A sheep in wolf's clothing? Everything looked good, albeit some things a little different, the taste was mediocre at best. I could've gone to HEB and found better pan dulce. It's too bad. The bakery used to be an institution. Chico's is over and I'd expect that Chica's is close behind. If you don't believe me, compare the overwhelmingly good reviews from a few years back to the generally poor reviews over the last year or two. read more

Did Chica's choke in the game of Pan Dulce ? I've been going here since I was a kid and up til now the Pan Dulce has been on point. I was in town this past weekend and purchased the usual, cuernitos, impanadas, Marranitos, etc. Not sure if the former bakers are gone but nothing was the same, it was very dry, under spiced and the proportions were off. ( Empanada dough to pumpkin ratio off, Marranitos had a Liquorice aftertaste, cuernitos too large,dry and dough was bland...Hope this was an anomaly....... read more

I volunteered to bring pan dulce for a breakfast potluck at work and totally forgot until the morning of. I am so glad I did because that was how/when I discovered Chico's. Delicious pan and addicting cookies- Chico's was a big hit with my coworkers. They'll be my go-to potluck contribution from now on. I wanted a basic chocolate donut so I stopped here. The glazed donut is fresh and cinnamon roll is good. The rest of my basic donuts tasted like they didn't sell yesterday so they let them stay on the shelf and sold them the next day. Super stale and hard. Completely different bread from the glazed one. Please throw out unsold product & make it fresh daily. Unfortunately, this will not be my bakery of choice :( read more

I wanted to like this place. It's a cute place and the people seem nice, but I feel their prices are high. I don't know if they over charged me, but I paid $10 for 2 conchas, 2 mini churros, and an empanada. When we lived on the west side we could get a full box of pan for $10 and we walked out with a small bag. The pan was okay, but maybe was a little hard since we came later in the day. This Bakery was one of my Favorite places growing up. Been away for 20 years and I came back to get my Favorite pastry, the maranito!! I was told the place had new owners and it was remodeled and it did look very nice in there. The Pastries looked even better. I left with a Box full of deliciousness.
