This Place was a BIG Disappointment, we drove from Corona to try thier Broasted Chicken, my wife and daughter and I ordered the 2 piece meal came with 2 sides, we all tried different sides. So when our food arrived we were excited to eat, the Chicken was not very tasty, I've had better Chicken from KFC, and thier sides were horrible. And also they give you Ketchup and Hot Sauce in little packets. ( Message to the Owner of this Establishment...... Go to the Supermarket and buy some bottles of Red Rooster Sauce, people love this Sauce on thier Chicken, and the bottles are only a little over $1 and try putting Ketchup in squeeze bottles ) And to top it off, they Do Not Have A Public Restroom Here. You can get very good, quality fried chicken for practically the same $ as the big chains, and its practically a no-brainer choice when you need to feed a herd and fried bird is on your mind. If picking up to go, don't make the amateur move of NOT removing the cover and bag, accidently trapping the unwanted steam created by the heat of the chicken, that can often be the enemy of crispyness. Undesired indeed... I must say that since the proliferation of Korean chicken joints this once beloved fried chicken shack (literally shaped like a house) lacks wow factor in comparison... It's a sad day when somewhere legendary gets sold. We had been going to chicken box for years before we lived in La Habra. Last week, we decided to get it (we had gotten it last a few months ago)...both times it seemed "off". Today, I found out it was sold last year. Before, the chicken was a bigger portion and fresher tasting. There were more and better sides. There were more sea food and dessert options. The fish was a lot better and they had malt vinegar (now they dont). The rolls are store bought vs. Homemade. Also, they closed the side door and made the inside very plain and boring. They had actual boysenberry punch before and now...nope. 2 stars because of what it was. But minus 3 stars for the loss to la habra. Wont be going back. read more

The Chicken Box was a great place for a quick take home dinner. However, since they are now under new management, my rating has dropped from 5 stars to 2. This has nothing to do with the food, (that's still very good) but the staff is really rude, and they no longer offer the Monday special ( everyone's favorite). The other night when I went in to pick up my order, I couldn't get over how rude the woman behind the counter was. As though wanting to pay for my order was a big inconvenience. A friend of mine told me about Chicken Box a long time ago and I got one of the Family Meals for a friend's house warming party. Unfortunately, for some reason I never got a chance to taste the chicken. Everyone at the house warming told me that the chicken was really really good. So this is my chance to check out the chicken myself. Service - Excellent - The friendly cashier took my order and it was ready in 15 minutes. Cleanliness - Looks pretty clean Price - $4.77 (includes tax) Seafood - Shrimp, scallops, cod Meats - Chicken, ribs Vegetables - In cole slaw and potato salad Dessert - Brownies, watermelon slices, chocolate dipped strawberry Fruits - chocolate dipped strawberry Other - Be aware of the road when pulling out of this place--especially, the double yellow lines. The last time I was here, I crossed 2 double yellow lines, it cost $200. Seating is mainly patio, but pretty awesome on a sunny day. What was ordered: Lunch Special (4.37) - 2 pieces of chicken (leg and thigh) with 2 sides (potato salad and cole slaw) and a medium soda. 2 pieces of chicken - If anybody is not familiar with broasting, here is a quick low down of broasting. Per Wiki, "Broasting is a method of cooking chicken using a pressure fryer and condiments. The method combines pressure cooking with deep frying chicken that has been marinated and breaded. The result is the chicken is crispy on the outside and moist on the inside and less greasy." The chicken was absolutely delicious. Nice crispy golden crust--with very little grease. The chicken was absolutely tasty, moist, and extremely tender. They give you a choice of leg/thigh or breast/wing ($0.29 extra), but next time I'll get the breast/wing since I felt I need more chicken goodness in my stomach. Potato salad - potatoes, celery, black olives, dill, and gherkins. Taste-wise, it was perfect. I absolutely hate when (1) too much mayo is used or (2) it is too sweet. This potato salad had the perfect balance of mayo and that hint of sweetness (gherkins). Coleslaw - cabbage, red cabbage, and carrots. This was very good as well. You get that nice crunch from the cabbage. It was perfectly chilled so it was very refreshing considering it was pretty warm out--and balances out the flavorful of the chicken. Chicken Box has served La Habra for 37 years. I can see why ... everyone's hooked on the broasted chicken. Trust me, you'll think twice about getting chicken from anywhere else. read more

I found this place on accident driving up to buy a car. WOW What a gem. The fried chicken here is terrific. Really authentic southern style. I could have sworn this place is called Chicken in a Box anyways... On the same night of the record 640 million dollar jackpot, I wanted to eat chicken (to pay homage to the saying winner winner, chicken dinner). It was a premature celebration... and seeing as though I am writing a review the day after the results were announced, you can only guess how I did on the drawing. Anyhow, this place is more of a to go joint than a sit down. There are some seats on the patio that can fit 15 people (about 5 tables with 3 chairs each). Bring a jacket just in case they don't turn on the heat lamps, which they did turn on for us that night. When we rolled up at 730pm on a Friday night, we were told we would have to wait about 40 minutes... so I would recommend calling ahead if you don't want to lollygag too long. We got a chicken and rib dinner for two which comes with: - two chicken breast - two slabs of ribs (which was either 3-4 pieces after cutting them) - macaroni salad (other choices included coleslaw and potato salad, garden salad could be subbed) - mashed potatoes (other choices included their broasted potatoes and french fries) - side order of deep fried pickles (additional side order, $1.50) - two rolls - two diet Pepsis( after reading the above, why bother eh, lol). This all rang out to about $22, quite an affordable dinner. They ended up bringing the food out in about 25 minutes and we were overwhelmed. The table didn't fit all of the food that we had to pull up an empty chair to use to put our drinks and other things on. I was a little disappointed that the chicken/rib dinner comes with chicken breast usually since it's one of the more dry pieces of the chicken. Still, there was an amazing amount of tenderness coming from this piece of chicken. Loved the skin on this. I will definitely try their dark meat next time around. As for the ribs, I was pleasantly surprised at how good these were. Despite being a pain to cut with the cheap utensils, the meat pretty much melted in my mouth. The bbq sauce had the right amount of tang and it wasn't doused in the sauce either. I think I would get the ribs again too! The big upsets of the meal were the sides. The macaroni salad didn't taste any different than what you can get at a supermarket deli. The mashed potatoes didn't have anything special about them either and a they were a little too chunky for my tastes. And the deep fried pickles... what a disappointment. The batter didn't adhere to the pickles in the way I pictured them in my head and ended up being a big old greasy mess. I don't know if its just diet Pepsi in general or the actual machine at this store, but I imagine it tasting like melted paper clips. I will stick with a can of Squirt next time. There are so many things to try here but I would assume the chicken and the ribs are the safe choices. I don't know if any of the other deep fried stuff would be worth trying after eating the pickles. All in all, it was a great chicken experience and even though I didn't win the lottery, I was still happy I got a good meal in to make me get over the loss. read more

So I decided to give this place another shot after reading all the positive reviews and I have to say it was much better this time around. Plus I knew what to expect when getting broasted chicken; it's made in a pressure cooker, not a deep fryer. I got the Monday special w/ mash potatoes and couple corn on the cobs and called in the order 30min beforehand. The chicken was seasoned well and not dry at all. Maybe they listened to the feedback? But yeah, I enjoyed my chicken a lot and I didn't have the greasiness I usually would have with fried chicken. With the breast meat, I found it excellent dipped in ranch. Mash potatoes w/ their chicken gravy was not that great and corn was kinda undercooked I felt. But I wouldn't mind coming back for their chicken. The Chicken Box has been around for as long as I can remember. I have passed it on numerous occasions without even giving it a second glance. Recently, I started paying closer attention to the sign, and lo and behold, I see that they serve broasted chicken. What is broasted chicken and what makes it so special? It's a method that sort of like deep frying in a pressure cooker. That results in a method that uses less fat to fry chicken with comparable results. The end product at the Chicken Box gives a nice, crunchy exterior and a very moist and juicy interior. The chicken is nicely seasoned, and although it lacks that real heavy coating found on most fried chicken, it still produces a resounding crunch that reverberates through your teeth. The chicken is not greasy in the slightest bit. The broasted potatoes are cooked in the same fashion, although the end result is sadly not the same as the chicken. The potatoes are rather limp in comparison and really lack any seasoning. There are a couple of caveats about the Chicken Box. It is take out only, so unless you live really close or plan on eating in your car it is likely to get cold and lose some of that valuable crispiness. They also cook the chicken once you order it, so be prepared to wait at least 25 minutes unless you call in your order. They are also closed on Wednesdays. The staff could also use some help in the customer service department. read more

I went there on a Monday for their special deal. The chicken is outstanding but their potato wedges were a bit too soggy for my liking. There is nowhere to eat inside so people pretty much are there to get it to-go. I didn't call in my order which people highly suggest you do, and when I ordered inside the store the nice girl told me that it would take half an hour. I said no problem, but in 15 minutes, she had my order ready to go. Parking is in the front, and I had no issues. There really isn't that much vehicle traffic in that plaza anyway. read more

My grandma who has a hard time with her oxygen intake wore a face shield like she does every other place we go and the man gave her a mask. That's fine. Protocol. BUT when we asked about the chicken tenders he said they're out and they were out of five other things we asked for. Then he proceeds to just stand there huffing and puffing behind the counter when we asked questions so when we asked him about the menu again he said we have everything else but the items we asked for. Amazing "broasted" chicken! The chicken is perfectly crispy on the outside and mouth-watering moist on the inside. It's just great chicken! We ordered way too much chicken for two individuals, but the chicken was still great as leftovers (which was eaten later that night for dinner)! I also loved the sides we ordered. I really liked the macaroni salad and was very disappointed that we had ordered such a small portion - we're definitely ordering more next time. The mac salad was tangy and tasty and not overdone with mayonnaise. The potato wedges (gigantic and delicious) went well with the fried chicken as well as the onion rings we ordered.
