The food isn't horrible. The establishment is. The entire time I was here only three other people were here and they were the workers. None of them decided to grab a broom and sweep the floor, which is covered in crumbs. And every single table in the restaurant was dirty. Really? What does it take to wipe off the tables and then sweep up the floor,,, five minutes? This is probably the next restaurant in KERRVILLE to close, so if you're Jones'n for a piece of hot chicken, come on by and grab it but better take2 it to go. There's an old joke in Kerrville. Whenever a new business is under construction and someone asks on our local social media site (NextDoor) if anyone knows what that business is, the answer is invariably one of three: a chicken place, a nail salon or a bank. For a town of just shy of 25,000, we are indeed endowed with more than our share of all three. Why? No one knows. There are seven "chicken places" in our town as I write this. I've eaten at them all and hands down, IMHO, the best is Chicken Express. Now, I'm fully aware that it's the nature of the beast to change in quality from day to day, perhaps even hourly. So, I can only report for my visit on October 27, 2023. I needed chicken tenders, lots of them, for a Potluck. There would be eight people and they would be bringing all the sides, desserts, etc. However, knowing that sometimes not enough food is brought, I opted for a 30-piece Family Dinner which included three sides. I called at 4:30pm for pick-up at 5:00pm. The manager explained that they were working short-handed but he would do his best to have my order ready by then. I have a habit of arriving early, so it was 4:50pm when I pulled up; I chose to go in rather than drive-thru. Sure enough, I spied only three workers: the to-go window guy, another at the back of the store who appeared to be new and the manager. The manager greeted me almost immediately and asked me to please be patient; seeing that he was doing the work of three, that was no problem. It took about 10 minutes, which was an amazingly short time considering the situation. Although obviously frazzled, the manager remained polite, friendly and sincerely thanked me for my patience. Arriving at my destination, I found everyone else did indeed bring enough food, so I popped the sides in the fridge for Peg and me the next day. When we tucked into dinner, we all complimented the chicken tenders as moist and tender with an appropriately-crispy crust. They were not greasy and the seasoning was spot-on. Afterwards, we moved everything to Peg's fridge until the next day. We had chicken left over, so that with the sides made for a nice meal. By the way, the sides were gravy, cole slaw, mac and cheese and green beans, any of which could have been a fast-food disaster. Even reheated, the mac and cheese had a sharp cheddar flavor and was far better than some I've had at sit-down restaurants. The green beans (broad beans, actually) although "wilted" due to their incarceration in the fridge, remained very tasty with no off-putting overtones. The slaw was the classic Southern chopped variety; not too sweet, not too tart and a perfect companion for the other sides. And the gravy--ah, the gravy. Classic cream gravy, perfect thickness and strong chicken flavor that held up overnight and did not break when heated. Good enough to make any Southern boy cry, "Honey-Hush, Sweet Lips!" Finally, you may ask why I gave a chicken shack five stars. Shouldn't that be reserved for high-toned sit-down restaurants? When I review, I consider the genre of the establishment, and my ratings reflect that. So, out of all the chicken shacks in Greater Metropolitan Kerrville, Chicken Express merits my rating. Excellent food, excellent manager--doesn't get much better than that. read more

As of a few weeks ago, new management. Let go many of the workers and have kept the good, and hired new staff. The difference is that the food is much more fresh, many being made only when you order. A little more of a wait time, but hot and tasty. (I have the fish on Fridays.) The leaks mentioned in other reviews have been repaired, and the inside is noticeably cleaner. The past 2 times I have been there, more people were choosing to eat in, and not just to-go. Thanks to the district manager from Fredericksburg for coming in and cleaning up (literally) this establishment. A+ read more

Food was so so, out of corn nuggets (cashier didn't remember until we had paid). Food was lukewarm. No ice and was not refilled even after another customer brought it to their attention. Tables and floors were dirty. Ceiling was leaking. Several water puddles throughout dining area. Had to ask for forks, as did the customers in front of us. Did not receive rolls with our order. We usually enjoy Chicken Express but today we sat for over 45 minutes and never got our order. Went to side door- locked- went to the door by the drive-thru -where we were sitting -to get someone's attention and was rudely told by a lady that I couldn't be in there. The window person had come to us twice and said our order would be right out- but never came back. Manager finally came to window and asked if we wanted refund- on our card or cash. We got a refund thru my card- said we go there frequently- asked what the problem was- said he was cooking and didn't see our order. I have always loved Chicken E! The OG Chicken E is from where I grew up. So it always reminds me of better days of ol'! The wife and I went to eat in the dining room at 9:15 on a Saturday. Dining room says open until 9:30. An employee had walked out during his shift earlier that day so my wife and I offered to just get our food to-go. Waited in line for a good 15 mins for my food asked the cashier when I got to the window if he had my order correct got receipt and everything was charged correctly and was told was in the bag. I got home to 2 boxes of rolls one side no gravy or sauces for anything and tenders. I called and spoke to the manager who had a really don't give a shit about this job attitude and said she could refund the missing items. With her attitude I didn't want anything just my money. I returned back to the store and she was even ruder in person. Said the only thing missing was my other side, I said a that's not correct because at the very least I should have gotten gravy with the tenders I was given but no. She continued to huff and puff and take her time going as slow as possible and make it seem like I was the burden on her. Very disappointed in Chicken Express tonight. They always have the best livers. It is supposed to be a 6 piece and the box is usually full. This falls in line with Golden Chick & Bush's Chicken if you've ever had one of those places. Fried chicken, sides, gravy, rolls/biscuits. Chicken Express is definitely my favorite out of these 3. There are a ton of uncommon fast food joints on this street and most have good reviews. This place should as well... 1) The logo is great. The chicken is flying through the air with goggles. 2) The menu is varied and has lots of Texas staples. For instance, the side item list is as long as your favorite BBQ joint's would be. 3) Liver and gizzards is an option. 4) The fried chicken and the fried liver comes with a large portion of white gravy. 5) The food is good and the gravy is too! My husband was shocked at how close the gravy was to his mom's homemade version. Kerrville Location really going downhill. Saturday afternoon (about 2pm) had a chicken snack pack. Chicken was all dried out from sitting under the heat lamp too long. When you pay $7 for a single piece of chicken and a small handful of fries, it ought to be the best chicken you've ever eaten, not the worse. I'm done with Chicken Express. The chicken and biscuits is like a day old and under the lights all day. Last time it was the same and they gave a replacement order that was worse. We have never received a complete order. We have placed large orders (i.e. The tailgate special) four times and all four times our order has been incomplete. Most recently we were missing all the bread. Twice we have been missing sides and once we were short a significant amount of chicken. The staff is kind and courteous and the food is good but this is ridiculous. read more

I have been a semi-regular customer of this location for about 5 years. I am not the kind of person who complains. This is my first negative review - ever. I have a busy, tight schedule, and their service has always been tops. They are under new management, and I have been pretty patient with the drop in quality of service over the last few months. The website says most people spend about 20 minutes there. I have spent 20 minutes I didn't have the last four times I have gone through the drive-through window. In the past, they were fast, very friendly, and never messed up an order. Three of the last four times, my order has been wrong. I do not go at peak times, yet service is unbelievably slow. The servers are friendly, but they do not appear to be well-trained. I really hate to quit visiting this restaurant. It's the only one in town, so there's no good alternative. I hope there's a regional manager that can hold this new manager accountable and get it up and running again. read more
