We did a 3rd party delivery order for our lunch this weekend and I must say consistency is key, because chicken express has tasted this good for as long as I can remember! We normally get the 8pc or 12pc family pack with flour tortillas, mashed potatoes gravy, and Spanish rice. All hitters. The rotisserie chicken is always moist and delicious, and eating that with the rice, potatoes, and gravy just made sense when I was kid. This time we got the same pack, but with coleslaw and potato salad, and we were not disappointed! They put olives in the potato salad which are awesome, and the coleslaw reminded me of a better KFC slaw, also awesome. The spicy red salsa had good heat, and so did the green avocado salsa. No review for ambiance, because I've never set foot inside their storefront, it's always either delivered or through the drive thru. They're always super nice, and I think they offer garlic bread at the location in exchange for tortillas if you get it in person, don't quote me! read more

This place has great food. The rotisserie chicken is excellent. The service is hit or miss. If you get delivery through DoorDash you will not get salsa unless you buy it. You have to physically go there to get your salsa with the chicken. If you eat there they have limited seating. I eat here all the time but to make it worth it you gotta get your food so you can get their delicious salsa otherwise you gotta pay for it. read more

Was happy to see this place was open. There wasn't a lot of cars in the drive through yet I still waited about 15 mins to get my order. Got an 8pc meal and the food itself hit the spot I asked for hot pico red and green. They gave me two red 1 green and 1 pico. Come on, I'm ordering an 8 pc which probably means 2-4 ppl are eating this meal. We should atleast get 4 of each salsas one for each person I also got the tamarindo but I don't know why latently agua frescas at places taste like it's fermenting. ‍‍‍. We placed an order last night via DoorDash, after reading reviews about skimping on sauce, we ordered an XL sauce for a family meal, glad we did because for a family meal they only gave us 2 extremely small sauces. Chicken Express you can do better, your cheapness is equivalent to a sushi restaurant charging for soy sauce. We would have been pissed and never returned if we paid $60 for a family meal from Door Dash and had dry tortillas, rice and chicken with no sauce. Our family have been longtime customers since 1997. We haven't been ordering in recent times and was reminded why this last visit. We went through the drive thru and ordered 16 piece family meal (two rice and beans), another order of beans, so a total of 4 sides. We asked to order a large side of pico de gallo which apparently wasn't an option, so we asked for a lot of pico de gallo. And 3 cakes. Got home and unpacked our order and noticed 3 sides only and only 6 small pico de gallo containers. This is not the first time and sadly not the second or third time items have been missing and sad amounts of pico de gallo was provided. I had these a few times delivered to work and it has always been great. Fall off the bone and delicious Mexican style rotisserie chicken. I came in person for lunch today and had the French bread, slaw and potato salad as sides and wow that was great. Home style flavor in both potato salad and slaw was truly fantastic. 4.5 in the food but there was a bit of a smell coming out of the kitchen which turned me off so 3 in that, rest rooms are ok and place could use a refresh of paint and just remodel so for sure I will get it to go from now on. I just got home from spending nearly $50 on chicken and some sides to discover that there was no salsa provided. When I called to inquire, I was told that I had to notice a hand written sign by the window that says Salsa is only available by request. This is Mexican Chicken with Tortillas and Pinto Beans. There is 10000% expectation of salsa. I shouldn't have to ask for it. They should ask the consumer when they order if they want salsa. This very much feels like they are cutting corners. I work around the corner. I am writing this in response to an overall experience. We spent 100.00 for a work dinner and was missing some items. We called and they stated that we have to pay for the missing items in order to complete our meal. We were missing some sides and now do not have enough food for our employees. When we called, explained that one of us agreed that we could go back and pick up the missing items, they stated their employees didn't do anything wrong and all items should be there. Integrity is lacking and the representative helping one of my coworkers is not lacking an attitude. We picked Chicken Express because as a whole we like it. This experience not so much. I've been going to Chicken Express since the 90's and it's always had good food. But if you go through the drive thru you'll probably get cheated. Yesterday I made this mistake because I was tired and hungry. I ordered 5 crunch tacos, no sour cream, and a 16 oz container of green sauce. I paid with a card and got no receipt. I didn't realize I didn't get a receipt until I got home and saw I had only an 8 oz container of sauce. The charge to my bank was 19.60. According to their prices, it looks like I not only got charged for a larger sauce but for the extra sour cream that I didn't order. This isn't the first time the drive thru screwed me, but I had hoped the previous time was an honest mistake. Apparently not. Maybe I'm weird.. but I'm not sold on fried chicken, yes, when cooked right it can be good, but I prefer baked or rotisserie style. Chicken Express is a less greasy alternative to a good tasting meal...for yourself or the whole family. When I first moved to Vallejo many moons ago...thus was one of the first places we had dinner as a family. From that day on this place has consistently stayed true to great tasting chicken while adding variety to their menu. Quite disappointing in every way! The food was bland and dry. The meat tastes like a used oil and the sides look very old. The staff were unfriendly! No one wants to serve because they are either talking gossip amongst each other or they are on their cell phone. The front yard could use some power washing as it looks dirty and sticky. read more

I really didn't want to have to write this review after all these years but, it's time. This place has fallen so far from Grace it's heartbreaking. Once a quirky place called "Chicken Spit" where you got the best rotisserie chicken anywhere on either side of the Napa river this place will now ass Chicken Express eventually give you food poisoning. I write this as I recover from E. Coli from one of their taco salads that was made with bad meat. This isn't the first time something like this has happened. Either they've messed had less than fresh produce or when you get shredded pollo there's still bone in it. Chicken express, I'm pleasantly surprised! So my husband and I were passing through Vallejo and he could'nt stop raving about his teenage years eating chicken express. So of course I had to see for myself what his hype was all about. Luckily there is a drive thru so we didn't have to get out of the car. Hubby ordered the famous taco salad and I ordered 3 crunchy tacos with sour cream and a small order of Spanish rice (forgot to take a pic of the rice). The tacos are a small cute size so luckily I ordered 3. The chicken is tender and flavorful and they load up the cheese, sour cream and lettuce. The taco salad is huge and comes with chips on the side. Also we ordered a Jamaica drink to quench our thirst which was refreshing. The attendant at the drive thru was wearing a mask and gloves. All in all my experience was great, can't wait to come back and try the rotisserie chicken meal. read more

You can get a chicken meal with side or tacos or salad or sandwiches. I've had the soft tacos, crunchy tacos, and Junior burrito and all have been delicious!! They definitely don't skimp on the meat and tacos and burritos are STUFFED. The Junior burrito is as big as my arm and comes with chicken, rice, beans, salsa, and add on of cheese and sour cream. What do you get when you cross a fast food place, a choke-and-puke, and a taco truck? Chicken Express. The name does not sound like a Mexican restaurant, and they have more food available than chicken. So that's why you read Yelp :-) There is a reason for all of these 5-star reviews, and why the drive-thru line backed up to Redwood Road. We found out the reason when we got our food. The Hunny got a crunchy chicken taco, the girl got a soft chicken taco, and I got a super burrito. We all fell in love with the food. The others wished they had more, but for $2 per taco, it's still a good deal. Even with all of the people waiting for their food, they still got the order right when we all said "no sour cream". I've had bigger burritos, but Chicken Express' super burrito is so thick that it took some doing for me to finish it in one sitting. The chicken, refried beans, rice, cheese, and salsa was put together just right. It didn't need the taco sauce, but when I put it on, it tasted even better. Muy bueno. Note that you cannot turn left from Redwood into the parking lot. I turned left onto Broadway and then right into Chicken Express, but then had the difficulty of making a U-turn in the parking lot to get in line. Surprisingly, no one was behind me. Chicken Express is so loved that there may be times when the line does back onto Redwood, so be warned. Yelp just put a message below this writeup, "This review is looking pretty epic!" I can say the same thing about Chicken Express' food. The menu is on the small side, but what you get is likely to be truly epic. Ours certainly was. I do undertand all the rising costs, but C'mon, one pico and one green sauce for half a chicken??! Which is technically about 4pcs! And that tiny small container!! I asked if I can have and the huge lady cashier told me: I can only give you one more! So that makes 2pico and 2green sauce total! Ridiculous if you think about it! I said, can I buy then? She said 50 cents for each small green sauce. I paid $1. As a common courtesy, sauces are meant for the chicken. Just like when you eat hamburgers and asked for ketchup! If you ask for a ketchup, they won't give you one piece and charge you for more! I remember those times when theres a big serving station with pitchers of sauces where you can pour your own at this location! Please provide the right amount of sauces for the size of the chicken that your customers buy! That should be complimentary! And not all people use sauces, too! Listen to your customer's needs! I just realized it's been awhile since my first review here and none changes with their sauce policy! It should not be a policy to be enforced! Maybe if I asked for 10 sauces, you can react, but 2 tiny sauces for half a chicken??! Seriously!?! Oh and I forgot to add, the bag smells like a strong perfume or lotion on whoever is handling the food!! This is a food service, so be aware of not using strong scented lotion or perfume! This place has some major nostalgia for me- right off Broadway in Vallejo is my old stomping grounds. At Chicken Express you will find delicious rotisserie chicken in many forms including tacos, burritos and entire chickens. I must say, the star of the show is the chicken taco. For just over $1 you can get a crunchy or soft taco (I highly recommend crunchy) with a good amount of shredded chicken, lettuce, tomatoes, cheese, and don't forget the taco sauce! It comes in little packets and it is very tasty- it gives you a little bit of vinegar without too much heat. For a few cents extra you can add sour cream to your taco which would be a great idea if you enjoy making already delicious food EXTRA delicious. It's not the nicest building, nor is it the nicest part of town, but it is one of the best chicken tacos in the East Bay. Don't let the outside of the building fool you. Drive thru is a bonus!
