I'm only giving Chicken King 1 star because I couldn't post this without giving any stars. My husband was excited about purchasing gumbo. He preordered it at a cost of $24.99. When I picked it up I received a small bowl and two crab legs. When I saw what I was receiving I said to the cashier, "that's it for $26???" He said, "it's the crab"; his justification for the cost. When we finally sat down to eat it I was even more mortified that the bowl contained mostly rice with some chicken, sausage, and 4 pieces of shrimp; and don't forget the two crab legs. Great soul food spot right down the street from my work downtown Fresno. A convenience fast and friendly service. I've had their chicken but the fish is by far the best fried fish I've had. The batter is just perfect lightly coated and I love the crunch from the cornmeal. Well seasoned highly recommend trying this if you love fish. Went to Chicken King to give it a try. Got the chicken and waffles and a 3 piece chicken meal. The chicken was crispy, served hot and fresh great flavor. We love Roscoes and this was a 2nd best. -Unfortunately, when we asked for butter they provided country crock margarine. This was disappointing to have everything else be so good and not have real butter to go with it. -They have no high chairs for lil ones and there was about 4 kids that came in during our visit. -The MAC and Cheese was not very good. Seemed like it was missing something. Maybe they use margarine instead of butter to prepare it. -Cornbread we waited a bit to eat it and by the time we tried it seemed really dry and again disappointed we didn't have some butter to spread on top. -Chicken is delicious and on point. the sides seem to be lacking a bit. -the cashiers were super helpful and friendly. -the cooks in the back do not smile and seem stressed if you look at them. -the food took a long time but did seem fresh when it came out. Let me explain something to you, this is the best fried chicken in all of Fresno. I came here because The Chicken Shack was a letdown with their unseasoned chicken. I ordered a three piece meal with collard greens and corn bread. Tastes like grandmama used to make. This place is the real deal soul food, not that unseasoned appropriated mess at other chicken places on the same block. I can't even begin. The chicken is beyond fabulous! It is so crunchy and tasty. The sides are equally incredible! The place is small but homey. The owner is AWESOME!! I ordered off menu without any issues. He was happy to make me what I wanted. From the chicken to the seafood to the sandwiches, there is nothing to disappoint. When my friends and I visited, we shared the smoked chicken thigh with macaroni and cheese and baked beans. Great flavors altogether and the chicken was moist and smoked in house. The fried fish was moist and had seasoned, crispy cornmeal batter. The batter was almost like a hush puppy. The food was fresh and served quickly.The reason why we stopped in the first place was because we could smell smoked chicken blocks away. Stopped by to taste & see what the "battle of the chicken" was about compared to another chicken place a block down. Truth is you cant compare the 2 other than they both serve chicken prepared differently. In my opinion this place is more like grandmas kitchen. You know grandma can cook. Giving 4 stars because nobody's perfect and there is always room for improvement. Chicken was crispy & juicy. The waffles made me want to come back for breakfast. Po boy shrimp sandwich -bread was soft, shrimp deep fried to perfection with the perfect crunch to your sandwich with fresh lettuce and tomato. Looking for a new place to eat lunch my father and I ventured downtown to give it a try and we were both impressed. It's a small place but it does have that mom and pop vide inside. If your looking for a place to get in and out quickly this is not the spot for you as the food is cooked to order and comes out HOT. We both ordered the 4 piece meal with fries. The chicken was piping hot, juicy and had excellent flavor. The crust on the chicken was crunchy the way I like it. Kind of reminded me of Popeyes in a way which is my go to for quick takeout. I decided to try a couple items, the shrimp Po Boy sandwich was so good love the sauce the shrimp is cooked perfectly had light crisp and was tender inside not over cooked the sauce is so good it goes perfectly with the shrimp so you don't need to add tartar sauce also the sandwich rolls are so tasty it's really a perfect sandwich. Also tried the yams and the mash potatoes which were also superb the yams are so tender and the sauce not over sweet the potatoes and gravy creamy, the fried chicken was crispy outside and tender and juicy inside. Everything was so good, fresh homemade tasting so because it's fresh and homemade it takes a little longer to prepare but well worth the wait. That day was a very busy day the owner was onsite and was very nice,caring and apologetic to customers waiting.
