Had Pho combination, great taste, Vietnamese Sandwich which was better than most Authentic Vietnamese shops, Cafe Vietnamese Style. Based on our first visit, I am not impressed with this place. We ordered a couple of items to go. Despite the restaurant being completely empty (it was before the dinner rush), our order took an extraordinarily long time. Starting with the good, the imperial rolls were deliciously crunchy, with nice shrimp inside. Unfortunately, the dipping sauce that came with them was just plain OFF. I don't understand how they got it so wrong. We also ordered chicken wings, which were just fine. I wouldn't have ordered them, but I knew it was something my kid would eat, so there you go. And she did eat them. I tried them too, yep, yummy. Lastly, I ordered the BBQ pork, which I thought I ordered with noodles, but it came on rice (don't know if that was my mistake or theirs). It came not with that lovely shredded carrot, lettuce, and bean sprout melange you usually get with VN food, but instead on top of big chunks of lettuce, which I just don't understand. I heard this place was new so we thought we'd give it a try and it was completely empty. The place looked nice but not too welcoming. I wished the walls were painted anything other than plain white. I heard someone said they had paper menus that looked like they were printed at home. Their menu now was put into those clear sleeves when you put it into a binder and they just cut off the border where the holes are. Ghetto! With so much money spent on making this place look nice, you would think they could at least laminated the menus. We ordered #1 chicken pho and #3 beef in chicken pho. The portion size was alright. The soup was good, but was a little bland. You would think that they would have good chicken since they specialize in chicken pho but the chicken was all bad. First of all there wasn't much chicken in there. The chicken was shredded but the fat was still on there so it made it look like there was more chicken than there was. I like the Chicken Noodle Soup they serve here, BUT the is the time it takes to get that Chicken Noodle Soup that makes this place just OK. I came in here one day with my friend because I the other times I came in I had a fairly good experience. However this time was not the case. When we stepped into the place we were waiting on table to get cleaned off so we could get seated. We waited for a few minutes and since they didn't seem to be making any efforts to clean off the tables. We sat ourselves at a table full of left overs in bowls and plates. I couldn't wait any longer so I cleaned the table off myself. I guess I was determined to get some pho that day. After I cleaned off the table there was no server to give us a menu so I grabbed one from the counter and once we decided what we wanted I had to go out to the counter to place my order. I got my dish first while my friend need to wait for his. When his dish came it was the wrong order so he had to wait even longer for his food to come. The food is still good. But the restaurant definitely need at least one more person working in the front. It is getting sloppy and unorganized because they only have 2 people working in front. 1) it takes like 10 mins for them to clean up the tables for the customers. 2) there's no spoon on most of the tables so people have to ask for it. The sauce plate and the chopsticks are also running very low on most of the tables. 3) third and the funniest, I have never seen a lemon so dry that can only squeeze out a single drop. With no expectations, this place was still a huge disappointment. 1. Customers had to seat themselves e/t it was empty 2. Chicken noodle soup was cold 3. Heavy on MSG 4. Noodles were overcooked and soggy 5. Dark chicken meat was also overcooked and rubbery 6. Lemon and jalapeno slices were old and wilted (waitress would not replenish upon request) 7. There were FLIES everywhere! To top it off, the waitress was slow and rude, and she did not respond kindly to the next table over that complained about their food. I was hungry and was in the area, this place is one of the few with outdoor tables, so we decided to grab a quick lunch. The menu looks Vietnamese, the waitress speaks Cantonese instead of Vietnamese. This should be a bad sign. We ordered special combination pho and grilled pork with egg roll vermicelli. The food was a major disappointment.They are absolutely NOT made by Vietnamese people. The broth of the pho is bland. The mediocre egg roll was definitely Chinese, not Vietnamese, Missing from the vermicelli bowl were a substantial amount of lettuce, pickled carrot, chopped peanuts...etc. What I got instead was a few chopped lettuce and cucumbers scattered on top. The fish sauce feels it's been diluted 100 times. The grilled pork was not grilled, and the slices were too thick. Best chicken pho in the Bay Area. I am picky with food, and I rarely write reviews. I don't understand why this place is such low rating, and I feel like I have to write something. You should only order chicken pho, the Vietnamese beef stew noodle soup, or their yellow chicken, the rest, you can skip. I see people complain no bean sprouts, this is the place for northern style chicken pho, it does not come with bean sprouts, even in Vietnam, they don't serve you bean sprouts. The chicken pho broth is light, non greasy, and no msg. A few drops of lemon juice and fish sauce will bring out the flavor. And their noodle is the fresh noodle, not from the dry noodle, and the price is unbeatable, except the interior is not as nice last like other places. Stick with the chicken pho. I've been eating at this restaurant with my father since it opened, and over the years, have pretty much worked my way through the entire menu. This is the type of restaurant that does one thing well, with everything else pretty much being an afterthought. The one thing this place does well is the chicken pho. Well, obviously, the name of the place is Chicken Pho You. Pho is the type of dish that isn't overly complicated, but needs to be executed correctly. The soup stock here is obviously made daily in house. You can taste the freshness. The same goes for the chicken. Fresh and juicy. The noodles are cooked properly and not clumped in a ball at the bottom of the bowl. All of this together makes one hell of a bowl of chicken pho. Add condiments to your liking and enjoy. The other items on the menu can be hit and miss. There is a beef appetizer, which features another fresh homemade soup, that's very good. But the spring rolls and imperial rolls leave a lot to be desired. The rice plate with sliced pieces of sautéed pork has good flavor, but the same dish with whole pork chops usually ends up dry. Finally, while the chicken pho is the best I've tried in the Bay Area outside of San Jose, the regular pho with rare beef slices, meatballs and tendon that we're all use to just doesn't hold up when compared to other restaurants. Also, as other reviewers have noted, they offer really cheap mixed fruit drinks and Thai iced tea. I've never tried them. The service is typical of most pho/Chinese restaurants, meaning they take your order, but without a smile. Though after coming here for years, the owners have become friendly, at least to my father who understands there dialect. The décor is casual, but more importantly, clean. I came here upon recommendations to try the chicken pho. The comparable to this dish is the similar dish offered by Turtle Tower in SF. I ordered the large bowl, and overall, the pho is on par with Turtle Tower's version. In fact, if you were to put the two respective bowls next to each other, I wouldn't be able to tell you which one was which in a blind taste test. This is a good thing, b/c if you're craving chicken noodle soup, Chicken Pho You's version will suffice and doesn't warrant a commute to SF for Turtle Tower. That said, my only compliant of Pho You is the portion sizes are smaller than that of Turtle Tower. The shredded checked and soup quantity are definitely smaller, but not by much. read more

Solid 3-stars-- Chicken Pho You offers a variety of food that's pretty good across the board (chicken pho, beef pho, rice plates). The reason for a 3-star review instead of 4 is the consistency of food quality. This is a place I eat at when I don't want to wait for an hour to eat (usually no wait or very short wait) or just don't know what I feel like eating. It's not the best chicken noodle or pho in the area, but the broth is fragrant and flavorful and they use fresh rice noodles (instead of the usual thin pho noodles), which I like. However, the broth quality is very inconsistent (e.g. sometimes bland or comes out not hot enough). It's a pet peeve of mine when noodle soups come out and it's warm... noodle soup should always come out HOT. Lastly, would not rate their chicken noodle more than 3 stars because of the proportions-- this is personal preference, but there is too much noodle to broth (needs less noodle, more broth), but just the right amount of chicken (not too much meat that it overwhelms). Still a spot that I return to now and then, but it's definitely not a "must-try" restaurant. If you're local/in the area and there's a line for everything else, this place would still hit the spot. read more

My friend told me about a new pho joint that opened up in Millbrae recently so I came here a few weekends ago with some friends and was actually quite pleased with everything. Considering this place has only been opened for about a month or so, I think they're actually doing quite well and definitely disagree with the other harsh reviews posted here. On a Saturday night, the place was relatively full. Large space. Lots of tables. Nifty looking aquarium. The staff was extremely friendly. Since we got there pretty late, 2 of us ordered the chicken pho which was pretty tasty, while another 2 ordered some beef noodle soup. Unfortunately, they were out of that specific dish and recommended another close substitute for the same price which was fine. On top of that, as a sorry for the inconvenience, the lady managing the place that day gave us all iced lemon tea drinks on the house, which was truly a nice surprise. I mean geez, opening up a restaurant is damn hard. I know I wouldn't even know where to begin. There's always room for growth and improvement and I can see great things happening here for them, really. After we place an order and waited 45 mins and asked her is our food ready she said is coming be patient. People came in later than us and was eating we were still waiting. Finally I asked the waitress and the owner walks in to ask us what's going on? K told her we were here for the last 45 mins and food is not here and she told us she is going to find out and afterwards the owner told us because our order was giving to someone else because they order the same food as we did. The broth tasted like they just pour a can of chicken broth, sprinkled some cilantro, add some small chow fun + chicken. So there's this hype about Pho Ga at Turtle Tower, Pho Ga Quan Ngon in Noriega recently. Haven't try Turtle Tower, but I do believe they're authentic from what I heard. Anyways, it's disgracing to Vietnamese that Chinese made their own version of Pho Ga and people LOVE it (Pho Ga Quan Ngon). There's no such thing as NO BEAN SPROUT in Pho. This place does the same thing, and owned by Chinese. I'm sick of people inventing their own food and call it Pho. So if you're the owner, please take my advice and add some REAL PHO ingredients in your broth (star anise, cinnamin, etc..), and give people some damn fibers (bean sprouts, and basil leaves) and believe me you will have loyal Vietnamese customer. Lucky you that you're located in Millbrae, majority of Chinese and Caucasian. They would be okay w/ your pho for now. Your place was crowded, but I'm not sure if they would come back. I have to say, the chicken noodle soup tasted a bit bland but it's exactly what I needed. It made me feel sooo much better. The broth wasn't oily. The chicken in the soup was really good. Sad to say, but I usually NEVER order chicken pho when I go out to eat pho, because my mom makes it almost every other weekend at home. It's always hard to beat good o' homecooked pho. My parents are pretty picky with the type of chicken they use too, so usually chicken at normal restaurants are just okay to me. So when I went here with my coworkers, it was my first time trying northern style pho. YEAH, I learned a bit of history that day doing my research on my own Vietnamese culture and not knowing that they were such a difference between northern style and southern style pho. The big thing is honestly eating pho as it was made, no condiments whatsoever (no sriracha, no hoisin sauce). I honestly really enjoyed the chicken pho here (I ordered the soup with chicken intestines too!). The broth was flavorful and not too salty. You can tell it's really fresh and not full of MSG like some other places. They give you a side of fish sauce and fresh jalapenos to eat with your pho, so I would dip my chicken into the sauce once in a while. They use a thicker type of pho noodles than I'm used to, so that was different, but good different for me. It's interesting to enjoy pho without adding any additional flavors. It makes me think of trying it more often at home. Prices are pretty cheap here. I left full, but not overwhelmingly full, so it was the perfect amount of food for me. This is place has potential to be a good hot spot for "Yellow-feather Chicken pho" in the Peninsula... It's missing something though. for some reason it seems a bit sterile, but maybe because it's still new. I'm sorry that my first yelp review is negative. :( I'll try to post some positive reviews later for karmic balance. :) So...I saw "Chicken Pho You" while running an errand in Millbrae today and I thought, oh yeah, a bowl of pho would be perfect for lunch! And the name is catchy. Easy 20-min parking in front of the liquor store on Broadway, and in I went to order some pho to go: Me -- Hi. Can I place an order to go? Server -- Yes. Me -- OK, I'd like one large Pho Ga, please. Server -- What? Me -- One (single finger). Large (hands expanding). Pho Ga. Please. (thinking: I've traveled through Vietnam; I do know how to say Pho Ga) Server -- What? Me -- Um...OK...one large Chicken Pho? (thinking: this is the name of the restaurant, right?) Server -- What? I don't know that. This? (pointing at a fried appetizer on the menu) Me -- Um...no...the Chicken Noodle Soup. This one. Here. #1. Large. To go. At that point, looking at the menu, I realized this is a CHINESE restaurant, not Vietnamese. But...several of the menu items say "Vietnamese"...and the name of the restaurant says "Pho"...and the menu looks similar to a typical Pho shop...so it should be OK...right? I watched 3 small fish in a large dirty aquarium while I waited for the kitchen to rustle up some broth & noodles. Took it home for lunch. Results: 1) Noodles are the wide fettuccine style. I prefer the thinner style, but whatever, cheap rice noodles are cheap rice noodles. Neutral. 2) Chicken was a mix of white & dark meat strips, with the skin & fat still on. Personally I prefer white meat and no skin, but I know, it's a different style. However...all of the chicken was overcooked, tough, and several pieces had connective tissue that I had to spit out. Fail. 3) Broth was hot & plentiful, but lacked any flavor. I had to give it a huge squirt of sriracha to make it more flavorful than a twice-diluted can of chicken broth. Fail. 4) It came with a small wedge of lime and a slice of chili pepper. I know, yeah, "northern style". Personally I prefer the "southern style" with sprouts, basil, cilantro, hoisin/chili sauces, onions, etc etc. Otherwise it's just a bowl of weak chicken broth with rice noodles and some shreds of chicken. Not inspiring. If you come from a small village on the Vietnam-China border where ingredients are scarce and each chicken is stretched across several meals, you might be OK with this soup. But if you've eaten a bowl of pho even from a street corner in Hanoi, I think you will be extremely disappointed. Saigon, not even close. For now I'll stick with Pho Miss Saigon (San Mateo) and Hometown Noodle (Redwood City) for good consistent basic pho, and Ben Tre (South SF) for the fancy stuff. read more
