Old school diner. Everything was good. They bring you out a huge scone. It almost seems like the scone is a diversion from paying much attention to the food. There's nothing wrong with the food, it's just the scone is overwhelming and mostly unnecessary. Moreover, the scone isn't that great. I believe I had a chicken friend steak. White gravy rather than brown. I prefer brown gravy on my chicken fried steak. The dinner salad was iceberg lettuce and a typical ranch dressing. It was a Saturday afternoon and they were busy. Prices weren't cheap. I left feeling that I paid more than I would have liked given what we got. Service was good, the place was clean but old. It seemed like everyone there was from Heber and they all knew we weren't locals. Maybe that's just my insecurity coming out in my review. They have an ice maker that produces nuggets/pearls/pellets. I LOVE nugget ice. We don't normally buy soft drinks but did that day and I was especially glad we did! Been there, done that. Doubt that I'll be back but then I live 60 miles away. read more

Had breakfast at Chick's this morning. It was fine. Nothing fancy, but certainly not bad. The hashbrowns are actually smashed up tater tot's. Again, that's fine, we like tater tot's. Just not the traditional hashbrowns you would find at most restaurants. Also, be aware that the "scone" is not a scone at all! It's actually fry bread. It was fine as well, but I don't know why they call this a scone. A scone is a baked good and has a consistency more like a dry biscuit. This was clearly bread dough that had been fried, thus, Fry bread. I'm sure the locals know what to expect when ordering this item, but if you are from out of town/state, you wouldn't have a clue. If you like fry bread, you will certainly enjoy this item, but if you're expecting a traditional scone, that's not what you're getting here. Chick's and The Hub have literally been Heber's "mom & pop" diners always! Chick's is "famous" for their chicken fried steak dinner for like $10.95. comes with a ton of mediocre food at best, and thats great if you want bland, greasy, subpar slop, posing as great priced food. If you do eat all of it for $10.95 you sincerely have a cast iron stomach. Go you! For me its not worth the misery for a cheap meal. Its just not good, ever. Sorry. The service was very quick and the waiter friendly and gave us advice that helped us with the choices. The food was very good and had the flavor of homestyle cooking like the small Ma and Pa restaurants of yesteryear. For years we drive by this cafe, but never try it. Finally we came a Saturday after noon. It is an old dinner. The carpet was kind of very old. It might be time to replace it. The large painting frame missed a corner. The waitress certainly had a very friendly small town presentation. Even the customers were friendly there. The price was very reasonable. The serving was huge. Unfortunately arriving at 4 pm for dinner was a mistake. My partner and I both ordered fried chicken. The fried chicken looked great, outside was very nice and crispy but the mid part was cold. After our complain, they were really nice and prepared another batch for us. This time every piece was hot inside out but a little over cooked. Maybe they wanted to make extra sure they were hot inside for us. The flavor of chicken was very good. This is the best breakfast dive!!! I freakin love that every meal comes with a fresh scone! This is everything you want from a small town breakfast joint right down to the homemade pies and of course the locals. Chick's Cafe has been around for a long, long time, and there's a reason for that. They have wonderful service and put out yummy, home style food. I can never get anything but the fried chicken which is always cooked well and dipped in the most delicious batter. The mashed potatoes and scone are perfect pairings for a perfect comfort meal. The soups are always wonderful and they rotate each day, my favorite being the clam chowder or chicken noodle. I'm a local, and after a poor experience 4-5 years ago we had sworn off Chick's. Based on the recommendation from a friend, we decided to give it another go. He promised things had changed. Well, I'm giving it a resounding "meh". The food was ok, just not worth the price we paid for it. The wait staff was inattentive and inaccurate, and that's being kind. Wrong order, we had to remind a couple of times that we were still waiting on a couple of items (mind you, these were a couple of scones we were waiting on when others had already been brought), and the condiments the staff brought were empty (empty ketchup bottle). All in all, there are better places that are more reasonable in town. Guess it will be another 4-5 years before we venture in again. read more

I got the breakfast so I can't talk about the other meals but this is bay far my new favorite breakfast place. Too bad I would have to drive all the way out here to eat it. Chick's rocks. I spent a week in Heber City while skiing Deer Valley. I visited Chick's several times during that time. The food and service was excellent on each occasion. I paid $9 for an omelette with bacon that was so over cooked it was like trying to eat rocks. On our way to the Sundance Film Festival we stopped by to stuff our faces with Diner food, and Chick's was the right place to do so. I ordered the Chicken Fried Steak w/Hashbrowns, 2 Eggs, & a Scone. Oh my that scone was perfect. It came with a slab of butter on it that melted into a tiny puddle in the middle of the scone, perfect for tearing off pieces and dipping into. Everybody in my group smothered honey on their scone, which looked amazing, but I kept it simple with butter only. Crispy on the outside and soft and warm on the inside, I'll for sure dream about the scone for a long time. The Chicken Fried Steak itself covered the entire plate and was delicious though a touch under-seasoned for my liking--I like my gravy to have a bit more pepperiness to it, if you feeeeel me. The Hash Browns are almost like McDonald's hash browns broken into smaller pieces...that's a good thing! The winner at our table, though, may have been my friend who ordered the Ham & Eggs. It's a legit pile of Ham...cooked perfectly so it's got a little crisp on the outside but it still tender and juicy. Big fan here. Service was super slow though. Food took a while and then getting the check after we were done eating took even longer. And it wasn't even that busy. They did seem to be a bit understaffed, so I'm not gonna let it affect my review. 4 stars it is. read more

Front door was dirty, that should have given us our first clue. I was very excited to eat here after hearing good reviews from Doug Wright and SLC Magazine. Beyond disappointed does not sum it up enough. Chicken fried steak neither breaded nor tender. Gravy was definitely from a package mix and brown gravy versus the white that I saw on another review. Scones were overcooked and delivered to us with no butter only watered down honey. Found a piece of wood in my salad and my sister found a hair. Who knows what we would have found next. Skip this place and drive back to Salt Lake to eat. read more

Much better. This place is why I miss being near a city. Because when you are this far from Orem or Provo or SLC, they know there's not a lot and your stuck, so there they are. Pshhhh. The menu here is the front of one page. Not much to choose from. But, if you are simple (2 eggs, coffee, bacon) it just might work out for ya. If you are someone who has trouble deciding, you might want to go elsewhere. This menu is simple and perfect for the 'regular's', but it's not for me. The seats are 5o,000 years old and you get either metal up your butt or you slide into the 'spot' where the same fat guy has sat for 50 years, now THAT my friends is comfort! NOT. Also, if the waitress is busy texting or chatting, you are NOT as important as whatever she's ignoring you for. Lame. Time to get an upgrade!! I'd go in if I was desperate for water or to use the bathroom. Warning: Saturday mornings can be crazy, if it's crowded....leave and go elsewhere. I made the mistake of 'going with the crowd' and got to sit, hungry with the crowd for 40 minutes just to place our order. We visited Chickes Cafe because my best friend told me how wonderful the chicken friend steak was. The moment we walked in the door we knew we should walk back out. SERVICE: You could tell it was filled with locals, and we were the intruders. There was no sign telling us if we needed to wait to be seated or we should seat ourselves. We stood there for what seemed like forever with everyone looking at us including the staff. No one said a word. Finally we asked the waitress who was standing at the first booth as you walk in (also ignoring us) if we should seat ourselves. She said yes and there are clean tables around the corner (who knew there was anything around the corner). We found a table, seated ourselves and waited, and waited and waited and waited. Come to find out the waitress that was soooo busy talking (about non related work issues) was Holly our waitress. Now I have to say when she finally gets to you she is an excellent server...well almost. It being a small town of course she knew everyone. She was friendly, just maybe a little too much. She seemed to have 5 minute conversations with everyone that walked through the door. We were able to see the windo wherethe food is placed when it is ready for pick up. Ours sat there for way to long while yes...once again Holly was talking to someone about something not related to her job. She finally picked it up and brought it to us. Food: What can I say but the locals must eat breakfast there because there is no place eles. It was terrible. My eggs were cold, thanks Holly. The chicken fried steak was burned on the bottom side and had a funny taste. The gravy was HORRIBLE! The hash browns were those frozen squares that had been chopped up, mine were still cold in the middle. The bacon was thick and rubbery and had no taste at all. I believe the Diet Coke my husband got (about 20 minutes after sitting down was the best thing). She said it took so long because she had to wait for him (who ever that was) to hook up a new diet coke to the machine. She said one of the other girls had asked himalso but he had not done it yet. With all the free time Holly has to talk maybe they she teach her how to hook it up. She told the table behind us that she would be the cashier whenever they were ready so we got out out credit card and laid it on the table along with the check and again...waited and waited and waited. My hsband tried to get her attention and she motioned for us to come up front. We made it to the register and had to reach over someone eating at the counter (sorry sir) to hand our check to the cashier. Now, don't get me wrong. I love small towns with the small town diners and friendly people. But we as first. timers were not greeted, or made to feel welcome at all. The staff were friendly if they already knew you, and the food was horrible. The prices were in line with other breakfast places but should have been a lot lower for the poor quality of service and food. We will continue to visit Heber but will never go back to Chicks again and will tell all we know to stay away. There are a lot of things they could do, but maybe start small as to not overwork anyone on the staff. We made a reservation on the phone the day before and when we arrived the next morning they "couldn't honor our reservation because they were busy." They told us the day before that it was going to be really busy so it would be best to make a reservation. We then left after being told that the wait was 45 minutes. (Isn't that the point of making reservations so you don't have to wait during the busiest hours???) Both people we talked to were extremely rude. Turns out we're glad we didn't eat there. This place is just average. Got the western omelette with no cheese nor toast and got grapes instead. The hash browns were pretty tasty and yummy grapefruit juice. It is all just normal breakfast food. Nothing that blows it out of the park. I feel I could make better food and more options with people that have the same gluten and dairy allergy I do. Chicks is an old fashioned diner. It is our favorite breakfast place. Their portions are generous for a good price.
