I wanted tacos dorado. So i entered it into my search and it took me to chico's. I almost didn't stop because I don't speak spanish and it's in a predominantly spanish speaking area. It was a Saturday night and they were a little busy but the lady who took my order was very nice. I ordered 2 tacos dorado and an iced tea. The tacos were amazing. And the ice tea was surprisingly good, not just liptons black tea. I highly recommend this place. Don't let the look of this place keep you from going in. The food here is some of the best Mexican food I've had, which says something considering I've lived in SoCal my whole life. The people here are incredibly kind and the decor is really unique. WOW. I literally just finished a bowl of Pozole and had to immediately leave a review for a couple of reasons. 1. The MEAT! Oh my GOD! It was some of the most tender, yummy tasting pork I have ever had in a Pozole. 2. The portion was HUGE! It came in a large styrofoam cup (I ordered through GrubHub), and it was filled to capacity with hominy and large pieces of pork. Amazing. Very little fat. I asked for extra hominy and they came through. 3. The broth was tasty! Listen, my mother makes the absolute best Pozole, but this one comes VERY close to tasting like hers. The broth was perfect. I also ordered a ceviche tostada and the portion was also big. Large pieces of shrimp and avocado. They are definitely not stingy with the shrimp. I will be ordered from here again and will dine at this restaurant in the near future. read more

Make No Mistake, The Torta Here, Absolutely Amazing! ... However Chico himself or the old Man, Terrible Lol, I Mean Just No Personality. Doesn't care for Compliments, Just all around Rude. The Inside is very crammed and suffocating, but its okay on a Day thats not busy i guess. The Price for just a Torta with no Sides or anything is 13 DOLLARS ... This family owned business consistently serves up delicious food. Our personal "regular" dish which they know we always order is breakfast machaca, no bell peppers, substituting tomato and avocado in place of rice and beans. The Salsa alone is enough to bring us back and is always fresh and full of spicy flavor! Today we opted for our usual in burrito form. It was just enough for two to satisfy and not feel stuffed and budget friendly (under $12 out the door with tax and tip included)! There are plenty of delicious options on the menu... but we like what we like and always come here for a variation of the same thing. I don't know why this little Mexican restaurant on Avenue 50, at Figueroa, in Highland Park, isn't packed all the time. The food is fantastic, far better than any other Mexican restaurants around. The Chile Relleno (actually 1 1/2 large rellenos) is subtle yet spicy, but not too spicy - stuffed with Queso Fresco, and what looks like Cotija sprinkled on top. The chicken enchilada is actually filled all the way with chicken - not just a few tiny bits. I had it with green sauce, which was delicious. If I hadn't felt stuffed, I would have had seconds. What a great place, with a delightful server, who even made me a special salsa to have with the chips, because I can't eat onions. Gracias, Chicos! read more

As much as I love to support local businesses, not all of them are great. While the food and service weren't bad the value just wasnt there. While I was eating the meal I continuously tried to justify the cost of what I had purchased. Maybe the cost of the meat is high because of the lack of volume that the owner can purchase? Is the monthly expense to run this establishment too high for a lower priced menu? I had ordered the carne asada plate and understandably this dish is usually expensive. However, the size of the meat itself was definitely not worth the amount that was charged. At most the piece of meat seemed to be about 4 oz. Very thin with a lack of any strong flavors. It was on the borderline of being bland. The rice and beans had no unique flavors and tasted the same as any other standard Mexican restauarant. For a 16 dollar meal one would at least expect a decent amount of protein aside from any other unique flavors the restaurant can create. Sadly, this wasnt the case here and maybe there are better dishes but I certainly won't be coming back. My recommendation would be to try to bring more value to the plate. If more meat is not affordable than maybe some handmade tortillas? Possibly a house made sauce? read more

I asked myself today why I haven't been here before? I mean I pass by every day and just never went. Well as of today, this will be my go to lace for some good tacos and sopes. The food was good and chile was nice and hot! The beans taste like home to me. This was the winner, you see the beans were refried the way they should be. One thing I don't care for is the tomato in the tacos. But that's easy, I'll just ask for the tacos without it. Yeah, I'll be back to try more dishes. The food here is soooooooo good! I got a chicken quesadilla. I was expecting chopped up chicken but instead they use slow cooked shredded chicken. The shredded chicken has so much flavor that really takes the quesadilla to the next level. We also ordered a wet carne asada burrito with red sauce. Chico's is off-the-charts good. The whole fried fish is delicious, the service is friendly, the salsa is fresh and bright-tasting, and be SURE to ask for a cup of cinnamon coffee.
