    Chilaquiles w/ green sauce

I love this restaurant. Classic vibes, great food, amazing service. I would rather go here than any other millennial minimal 'mexican' restaurant. This place rocks

MUY RICO! I always drive by this restaurant and hadn't had the chance to try it out until now. They have a small parking lot in the back and you can also find street parking: I went right at lunch time so it was a little busy but we managed to find a table to sit at. I ended up ordering chilaquiles verdes and my friend ordered the huevos rancheros, the food came out promptly and looked amazing! We also ordered agua de guayaba which was delicious. The chilaquiles verdes had the perfect amount of sauce and they weren't very spicy, the huevos rancheros were perfectly made as well and came with a side of tortillas. Definitely give this place a try if you want authentic Mexican food and of course support a local business!

I grew up in Highland Park and lived walking distance from Chico's. As a kid, I never got the chance to try it, but I'd always pass by -- whether walking home from school, church, or just around the neighborhood. Now, years later, I came back to visit my small hometown -- which has definitely changed with gentrification -- but I was so happy to see Chico's still standing strong after all this time. And after finally eating here, I understand why. From the moment you walk in, you're greeted warmly by the owner himself -- super welcoming and down to earth. I couldn't decide between two dishes, and when I asked for a recommendation, he offered to combine them: green enchiladas and carne asada on one plate. That alone deserves 5 stars! The food was absolutely delicious. Even my brother, who ordered the chilaquiles, couldn't stop raving about his plate. Everything was fresh, flavorful, and clearly made with love. The space is small but clean and charming, with a nostalgic vibe that instantly made me feel at home. I'll definitely be coming back every time I visit Highland Park. This place is a gem -- and it's easy to see why it's been around all these years.

    Camarones a la Diabla.

Better late than never is how the saying goes. However, I'm kicking myself for not coming here sooner, but I'm glad I finally did. If you are looking for good, authentic Mexican Food Chico's is the place. In addition to the tables of happy diners, there was a steady stream of people coming in to pick up to-go orders. The place is small & quaint, and the festive décor adds to the appeal. The chips were fresh, and the salsa was flavorful. I ordered the Camarones a la Diabla and it was fantastic. You can request the level of spiciness - extra spicy for me, please. The Diabla sauce was addicting - I wanted to lick the plate. The shrimp were juicy & tender. The Spanish rice was fluffy, and the refried beans were creamy. Both were tasty. The homemade flour tortillas were fresh, warm, & soft - perfect for soaking up all that yummy sauce. After my meal I had the pleasure of speaking with the owner Alberto, who told me this family-owned restaurant opened in 1991 and he's been working here every day since. He loves his customers and the community, and they all love him back. During the pandemic they asked him how they could help, and he said, "Order food," so they did daily in order to keep this beloved neighborhood gem afloat. Their dedication is an attestation to how good the food is here. The 5-star reviews are legit. *Beer & wine only. *Small parking lot or street parking.

Chilaquiles with Red & Green Salsa, 3 eggs on the side, Two Tamales combination (one pork and one chicken) mixed

I woke up craving tamales and have before gotten pozole for pick-up here, which was delicious! When I saw they also have tamales, I had to return for more. The salsas are rich and the Cafe De Olla was absolutely delicious. We asked for them non-dairy and it made the coffees even better with the Mocha non-dairy milk drinks. The service was wonderful, we had our food within ten minutes of sitting down and everything was so fresh. The ambiance is very family and community restaurant oriented. We saw some teens sitting alone and enjoying their food, a few couples and families. The place looks small on the outside but it's cozy on the inside. I absolutely will be back and highly recommend :)

Mamma Mia what are please 33 years of excellent service thank God for this oasis !

On my last visit, I sat at the bar with my husband. He ordered the breakfast sandwich, and I had the Mediterranean eggs. We both wolfed down our food, but the sandwich was way too small. It looked like it was on a grocery store hamburger bun. As my husband is 6'4", he shared the rest of my meal with me. The Mediterranean eggs were so delicious. The spicy labneh is the bomb. Also loved the little salad with pickled onions. Service wasn't bad. They were definitely packed and we waited about 10 minutes before finding seating. It was also really warm in there because it's open to the outdoors in the back. I've not been in the summer yet, but I hope they do something to cool the place when it's over 80 degrees. Wait staff were generally friendly and helpful. it was a nice time overall. They just need a bit more with the sandwich, like maybe a side salad or different bread. But I always enjoy coming because it's so lively and the food and drinks are yummy. :)

I been here 3x this month alone & I've sat at the bar on all three occasions. 1st. We were recommended french fries with our espresso martinis which hello why say no but I kid you not our food was sitting on the counter (where the food comes out) for more than 15 minutes before our server at the bar gave it to us. I had to ask them (they were talking to 3 different servers the entire time) to grab them for us lol thankfully, it was just french fries. And mind you, the fries were the only thing out so obviously they were ours. It was not busy. 2nd time I went it took extremely long for someone to come and take our order mind you there was like two people at the bar, including myself and a friend and about 3 to 4 servers behind the bar, talking to a customer and their dog, touching the dog petting the dog (gross) and overall distracted we called them over like 3 times and I swear we were being ignored! Took them over 10mins just to get us water not even counting the drinks we asked for! 3rd time I went, I know you're probably thinking why do you keep going back if their service is so bad but I'm not kidding when I said I used to love this spot. Any who I ordered food and saw with my own two eyes the food runner, wipe her sweat fix her hair and touch the food not wash her hands and not run a single thing...It was as though she was just hired to stare at the food... lol we sent it back and asked them to remove it from our bill which they did. Each and every time I go these days the service staff look like they can't be bothered and are always talking amongst themselves, which is fine but at least take my order and not make me wait 20+ minutes for some water and drinks while you're getting your chat on with people you see every day... I feel so bad saying this, but they should definitely reevaluate their protocols because the ambience this whole thing gave off was not good. I was embarrassed to say the least when my friend said he hated the recommendation. Ugh .

Unfortunately, the service has been consistently disappointing. Every time I visit, the staff seems uninterested, bothered, or inconvenienced by customers. There's rarely a warm greeting when you walk in, no welcoming energy, and often it feels like you're interrupting someone's day just by asking a question or placing an order. I understand that everyone has difficult days, and working in the restaurant industry isn't easy. But hospitality is a huge part of the dining experience. A simple smile, eye contact, a "hello," or making customers feel welcome goes a long way. The food deserves praise, but the service does not match the quality of what's coming out of the kitchen. Management may want to spend some time retraining and refocusing staff on customer service and hospitality. Customers should feel appreciated, not like they're a burden. I truly want to see this place succeed because Highland Park needs good local businesses, and the food is excellent. But after several visits with the same experience, I felt it was worth sharing honest feedback. Great food brings people in; great service keeps them coming back. I hope management takes this as constructive criticism and works to create a more welcoming experience for everyone who walks through the door.
