I got a chance to go to Chico's Tacos and I heard the usual warnings that either I would love it or hate it. I thought they were pretty good rolled tacos drenched in a thin tomato broth salsa with loads of cheese. They are very crunchy and satisfying. I also tried the hot dog sandwich and it was pretty good too. It's served on a hamburger bun and cut in half. The fries are good with just the right amount of salt. If you want a very affordable place to get some crunchy rolled tacos, I recommend giving Chico's a chance at least once in a while. read more

In El Paso, you have to try at least once, sitting in a booth, eating greasy, rolled beef tacos with sauce and cheese drowning the tacos, and the paper container they come in. A friend of mine kept talking about Chico's so of course, I had to try it, and while I wouldn't make that a regular part of my taco adventures, I can say I've had Chico's, and would eat there if I only had loose change in my pockets. Every time some comes to El Paso, I take them here! Delicious, inexpensive and an El Paso tradition. Even after a long night out, these tacos (meat rolled up in a tortilla and deep fried aka flautas or taquitos) The tacos are crunchy, the sauce has a great taste to it and the cheese on top is exactly perfect! I suggest getting 2 singles instead of a double so the tacos remain crunchy until you eat them and not soggy. :) read more

I finally decided to try Chico's Tacos after hearing about it all over town. This is an El Paso restaurant landmark. I don't know why I'm giving it two stars, it honestly deserves one, but since I refuse to give it another try, I'll just give it two. I had their famous "taco" which was more like a taquito. It was not hot, and the sauce was very liquidy and bland, the cheese was not melted and tasted stale and fake. My friend got the burrito and wasn't pleased with it either. I'm surprised they have several customers, but I'm guessing they are just loyal to this place. They only accept cash and do not have an ATM so come equipped. That night, after having Chico's Tacos, my stomach was in so much pain, I couldn't get any sleep. I came here after having drinks, so even being buzzed, this food was not appealing to me at all. A lot of Chico's fans say that they have change their "cheese", if so I wonder why they would do it because its not beneficial to anyone. Its sad they had to downgrade and I had to experience it. Because I was visiting El Paso for the first time, my girlfriend took me to Chico's Tacos. This place is one of those places that I hear you HAVE to go to if you visit El Paso. It's famous. My girlfriend told me that I would either love it or hate it. That's how people are about Chico's Tacos. There is no in between. Well, I'm here to tell you that I am one of those rare "in between" people. A nice, fast food place with plenty of seats. Sat down at our table and waited for the food to arrive. I was wondering whether or not I'd like it. Kind of a scary experience because my girlfriend said I probably wouldn't like it. I didn't want to go in to it thinking I'd hate it, so I tried to clear my mind and just enjoy what I was about to be served. They brought the "taco" out in a paper boat, swimming in sauce and cheese. I looked at it, wondering how I was going to eat this without making a complete mess. Everyone started digging in, so I decided to just go for it. (By the way, I did end up making a mess, but it is what it is). Well, it didn't blow me away. It was kind of boring actually. They had salsa, but I didn't use any because I wanted to get the full taste experience. I'm not exactly sure how to describe what a Chico's Taco is, and I don't want to offend the hardcore Chico's Taco fan club, but it was just... less than stellar. But man, the cheese factor is high, so I'm down with that. Would I eat it again? Probably not on my own, but I know I'll be forced to the next time we go to visit El Paso. Was in the area and figured I would stop in here. Worst mistake I could have made since being in El Paso. Kids might like it but it's because there is no taste to the food. Everything is bland and probably frozen before served. I'm not impressed and would ask for a refund if it wasn't cheap. Why oh why did you have to change the cheese ????? This was the perfect place to go get sick after a drunken crazy night... lol I know I know they are trying to use healthier and actual edible ingredients.... but part of the excitement of eating at Chico's was eating something you definitely knew was not healthy for you! Sure the cheese was plastic or wax who knows, and sure many of us wondered where the meat actually came from, but none of us can deny that it hit the spot after a fun night out. And let's not talk about how it has always served its purpose as comfort food after a horrible day, or a fight with your other half.... My opinion is if it ain't broke don't fix it. My opinion is that the new cheese ruined it for me.... It has this weird after taste, not bad just weird.... Sure it is better quality but it just doesn't go with the rest of it! Knishes in New York, Korean BBQ in LA, Machitos in Monterrey, Gallo Pinto in San Jose, Cuban sandwiches on Calle 8, or stacked green chile enchiladas with an egg in Santa Fe. But Chico's stopped me cold. Before you read on, if you are from El Paso kindly disregard this review. I fully expect you to disagree and respect your opinion. You have to be weaned on this stuff to appreciate it. I wasn't and I don't. I can't get myself to like the tacos, which are rolled tacos served in a square paper bowl with a thin salsa which is more like a soup. To me, they were terrible. I have to say, however, that the whole mystique of Chico's is intact and widespread. El Pasoans all over the world know of Chico's and wax nostalgic. I drove across country a few years back and tried this place while I was staying at a local Motel 6. The tacos were greasy and sloppy. If you are going to eat here make sure you bring about 40 napkins because the service is so slow you'll have to clean up your own mess. The nachos are inedible. The sour cream they use tastes like it was left out for about a day. I had an awful experience here. Maybe they've gotten better in the last two years. It deserves it's own location and segment on the food pyramid. The mayor of El Paso should appoint it the El Paso food of choice and give it the spatula to the city or something. For those who didn't know, Chico's Tacos are these flauta-like rolled tortillas that are served in this brothy-tomatoy sauce and then covered with cheese. The sauce is a huge family secret and certainly a big part of the Chico's cult like following. Then you pour this wonderful strange booger looking green death sauce all over it and dig in! Chico's tacos is a local restaurant chain in El Paso that conisists of several stores around El Paso. I went to high school in El Paso and it was sort of a custom of after having a night out we would all go to Chico's tacos to grab bite to eat. The most common order of tacos is the single or the double, which include 3 or 6 tacos, which come topped with grated cheese. However, I advise that you order two singles instead of a double in order to achieve best cheese coverage on all tacos. Aside from its tacos, Chico's Tacos is also known for its hotdogs, which unlike traditional American hotdog is made with a hamburger bun, containing two franks sliced in half lengthwise, chili beans, mustard, and pickles. I'm fairly certain that this will be my favorite restaurant until I'm dead. Even living in a city like San Francisco where there's good food everywhere, Chico's Tacos fills each one of their cardboard trays with a certain je ne sais quois that no other restaurant in AMERICA offers. True, this is probably an acquired taste for uptight individuals who take themselves too seriously, but they shouldn't be trying new things anyway. This is one of those restaurants that grabs ahold of your psyche and refuses to let go. So my wife and I took an impromptu trip to Austin to visit my brother-in-law for a couple of days before his deployment and decided on our way back to Tucson that we were going to stop at a couple of iconic eats on the way back. El Paso, which was quite possibly the least friendly town we had the displeasure of stopping in while in Texas, had only one place on our list of must-visits. I had initially heard about this place from the Gabriel Iglesias special, and feeling someone ironic about it, we decided we just had to visit on our way back. We had a number of hours to read the other reviews of this place and quickly realized that you either love or hate this place. We also quickly realized that we, as south-westerners who are quite familiar with the late-night taco shop, knew what this place was and knew what we were getting into, and if anyone could appreciate this place, it would be us. We finally arrive, and we've come for one thing, and one thing only: rolled tacos that you can drink! A number of people have complained that the sauce was watery, some have said that it varies from day to day. For us, on this particular day, it was not watery, and I did not find the flavor lacking. I thought the whole thing was really good actually, and I could totally get behind eating this on the regular as a late-night craving. Now what I don't get: where's the rest of the menu? I mean the tacos in the shit sauce with cheese is awesome--totally get it--but why are there no burritos? Would it really be that hard to add that onto the menu? In Tucson we have places like Nicos and Los betos which satisfy the same need but they do burritos and regular tacos, and they also do taquitos but with guac and pico and stuff. I can not tell you the fortune that would be made if these companies would find each other and discuss among themselves...I'm just saying. Anyway, I dont plan on going back to El Paso any time soon because for the 30 minutes we spent there I met about 5 people and 3 of them were nasty to us, so that's not a great ratio. I don't know what's more baffling, the fact that people still come here or the fact that it hasn't been shut down because of sanitation problems. The restaurant is filthy and unsanitary. Paper wrappers, chewed gum, and sauce(?) loiter the floors as rude employees screech out ear piercing orders. Nothing better can be said of the "tacos". They are bathed in a 90% water, 10% tomato sauce and sprinkled with putrid cheese. The actually taco itself comes out soggy, falling apart so badly you have to stab it with a fork just to be able to eat it. I'm being awfully generous by giving this El Paso, Texas joint two stars. The food is horrid. Saw this mentioned on the Food Network, was traveling through El Paso, and thought I'd check it out. They are known for their rolled tacos. With a 'single order' you get three taquitos (that any frozen taquitos in your local grocer's frozen food section would put to shame), floating in a watery tomato soup, and smothered with shredded cheese. That's about it. I reserve one-star votes for places that I have a horrible experience at. My experience was harmless but the food was pretty bad so I'll gift it two stars. I can't imagine anybody actually rating this place anything over two stars for the food itself. Chico's is a guilty pleasure and an El Paso Institution. If I think about what I'm eating, I'm sure I wouldn't. Fried rolled tortillas with something that I think is beef with lots of watery red sauce and some cheesy stuff sprinkled on top. Then I like a liberal amount the green hot sauce doused on top. I'm convinced you have to eat here late and have had a few drinks to really appreciate Chico's. Eat here, so the tacos remain crispy. Otherwise you get the sauces on the side. Chico's is an interesting place, and can be frightening for those from out-of-town or those who aren't drunk. It's not bad for lunch or dinner. You have no idea what's inside the soaked tacos when you're eating them, and you really don't care. It's not till later when your stomach begins to sound like a thunderstorm in the distance that your mind begins to go over the many kinds of Grade F meat you've just ingested. What's so amazing about Chico's is that I keep going back, over and over. It's truly best when you've got a minor-to-massive buzz going, it's like snack food for drunkies really, but it's not bad otherwise, just prepare yourself for a tummy-grumbling mystery afterwards. The cashier that took our order was really nice and helpfully guided us through the menu since it was our first time. Came back with an out-of-towner :) This time, instead of just eating the 'tacos' as is, I drenched them in green chili salsa. Problem solved! Everything tastes better when you add a spicy-kick to it! Don't get me wrong, it's still meat? rolled up in a shell, dunked in tasteless tomato soup, and sprinkled with cheese, but the green salsa masked the blandness and won me over. After a large order I ended up hungry with the bulk of it in the trash. Fluffy steered me wrong on this one. Drive the extra 1500+ miles and go get an Original Tommy Burger.
