And the mole was as if they put a boiled chicken breast and put mole sauce on top. I was not impressed. Chile Verde is probably the closest Mexican restaurant to our house. Fortunately it is also one of the finest yet still unpretentiousness in spite of its more sophisticated fare. The food is upscale like Paaxi and La Loma but not expensive. There are several unique salsas they serve along with great chips. I had the puerco and my wife fajitas. Both were great and spicy! Enjoy the big dining room, margaritas, and in the summer the nice patio! I'm glad this place is down the street. read more

We were looking for a lite lunch and found Chili Verde. They have a small parking lot. When busy parking would be a bear. Inside is a nice room. White tablecloths. For drinks, I had an ice tea (normal) My partner had a coconut margarita (he absolutely loved it) the food was Pueblan. A state in Mexico. for lunch I had two soft street tacos. One chicken, the other tingas.They were to die for. My partner had a chicken taco salad. He pretty much demolished it. Save your time and money and go to pinche taqueria instead! We were so disappointed in this place. We were the 4th table in the restaurant on a Thursday afternoon about 2:00, so not a peak time. It took 30 minutes for our waitress to even come acknowledge us. The waitress was more interested in cleaning a table when no one was in the restaurant than attending to the patrons. The bartender came to our table several times but couldn't even tell us what pilsner beers were available. The food was decent and is the only reason this place is even getting a 2 star rating. I love this place. It's fun to see Mexican food that doesn't just have the same 6 items that every other Mexican place in the US has. They give you 3 different dipping sauces to go with your chips at the beginning of the meal and they are all delicious. Not as amazing as I thought it would be. Did not live up to Westword's hype. Food of the same quality can be had at just about any nice Mexican restaurant in town. Easter Sunday, 2015, I took my family here for brunch. Westword's "Best Of" edition was published a few weeks before, and I saw that Chile Verde was named "Best Restaurant on Federal Boulevard." That's a pretty high honor for a restaurant on a street lined for miles with Mexican restaurants... So, without having been there before (and foolishly trusting Westword's opinion blindly), I took my family across town to Chile Verde. There were only two other guests in the place when we got there at noon. It was strange to see it so empty for brunch on Easter Sunday. We walked past the bartender, who didn't even look up at us, and I could tell right away that this place was going to disappoint. We chose a table and, what seemed like two weeks later, the bartender came over and took a drink and appetizer order. The drinks took a lifetime to arrive, so we ordered entrees right away, so we wouldn't have to wait another lifetime to see her again. Our appetizer was the ceviche -- a decent sized portion for $10, which we devoured, but had to use the paper tablecloth as a plate, since the server didn't bring any small share plates. We ate the ceviche with house chips, which were great, and came with three sauces (an absurdly tiny amount of each in three very small bowls). Our server mumbled some unintelligible gibberish about the sauces, then walked away. As a result, we had no idea what the sauces were. (Later, when we left Chile Verde, there was a food stain on the paper in front of where everyone had been sitting. Weird.) A year later, the food arrived (by this time, we were the only people in the restaurant). I was right in my assumption -- this food wasn't going to "wow" or amaze anyone. At this point, I was wishing I hadn't dragged everyone across town on a hot day -- I could have gotten the same quality food at my neighborhood Mexican place. I got the chicken crepe (crepas poblanas, $15)which was also gushingly recommended by Westword, and was listed on the menu as the #1 something-or-other in the city, or whatever. I felt that i might have been foolish to order the Crepas Poblanos, based on crepes (a French food) in a Mexican restaurant. This supposedly legendary dish was composed of shredded white chicken meat, covered by a crepe, which was smothered in a cream sauce. The sauce contained lots of sliced, roasted poblano peppers, and sort of resembled Campbell's cream of mushroom soup -- a little thick. The dish was good, but not amazing. A manager delivered a tiny bowl of rice to me as a side dish that I hadn't ordered. There was about a half a cup of green rice in the bowl -- an amount so small that it seemed it was some kind of semi-precious rice that was being carefully rationed out, like caviar. If you're gonna offer rice, for god's sake, offer a real portion or don't offer it at all. I sampled all of the entrees at the table, and they were good -- if not slightly dry -- but not amazing. Perhaps I expected too much. The service, for sure was crap: a 20-something gal who seemed like she started working in the restaurant business only the day before, and really didn't care too much, anyway. No personality, no smarts, no enthusiasm, no sense of hospitality. A dud. Lifeless. A robot. Next! As I walked out, I noticed another Mexican restaurant across the street, and wished that I had gone there, instead, and paid half as much for brunch. Oh well, that's the last time I treat Westword as Gospel. I'll form my own opinions about restaurants from now on. I felt sort of embarrassed to have taken my group across town -- telling them about how great the place was supposed to be. They were satisfied, but not really impressed. Overall the experience was a good one: we had a good meal, in a clean place, and everyone was friendly. The interior is certainly a step or two above your neighborhood Mexican place, and you could have a nice dinner here with your family, or a date. Maybe Chile Verde is the Best Mexican Restaurant on Federal Boulevard, maybe not. I guess that depends on what you're expecting. read more

I have been going to Chili Verde for 4 years now and they continue to be amazing. This place is traditional Mexico City food so you won't find burritos or other tex-mex styles people have come to know as "Mexican food." The chili en nogada and their fajitas are two of my favorite dishes and are a must try. Oddly enough the chili verde for which the places is named after was not that great the one time I tried it, but the rest of their menu makes up for it. read more

The food at this casual cafe isn't the standard Mexican fare most Americans know. Several recipes are from Mexico's culinary capitol, Puebla. Most reviewers rave about the Crepas Poblanas which are good, but for a lighter dish try the Chile En Nogada. I'm not a big fan of stuffed peppers, but this one converted me! It's one of Puebla's most revered dishes and Chili Verde does a nice job. Savory spiced ground beef mixed with sweet dried fruits, nuts and drizzled with a light cream sauce. It may sound a bit odd on the menu but your taste buds will thank you. Lastly, stick with the traditional margarita; I tried a version with pineapple that was fizzy and flavorless which our server kindly offered to swap out when she sensed I didn't care for it. read more

Maybe it was our fault for choosing cinco de mayo for our first visit. I got the feeling that they were not used to the a larger crowd. We should have known upon our arrival that something was awry when the host did not have a record of our reservation. Our food was ordered at 7:15 but did not arrive until 8:45. 1 1/2 hours later. My new favorite Mexican restaurant. When La Loma went down hill with cutting corners and cheapening the quality of their food, we we're scrambling to find a new local place to hang out. While it is pricy for what you get, its authenticity is up to par. They are still trying to find their consistency in their plate presentation, but the food never seems to disappoint. From their flautas, to their crab tostadas, to their puerco en chili morita ( which is über spicy by the way), they got my vote. The only thing they lack is the competency of their wait staff which seems to always let drinks go dry. They are however friendly and always willing to walk you through the menu options. read more

Hidden gem on Federal & 23rd! The menu is a delight with more types of margaritas than you can count (or try in one evening), a friendly bartender whose a wealth of information from menu descriptions about the salsa to the beers on tap, as well as locale history, their cute little backyard patio, and anything else you're curious to know. I will say that the calamari was not great, the batter was thick and maybe fried too long because they were like chewy onion rings. It was easily forgiven because the other dishes were so perfect. The waiter was described by one at our table as a serial killer, but he was nice. I wouldn't order the calamari again. It looked like onion rings, and very tough. I ordered the Rib eye. Waiter asked me how I like it cooked, said medium rare, the steak was cut sooo thin they couldn't cook it medium rare When we sat down, we had to clean the table and chairs out on the patio. Crepes poblano was amazing. Not too spicy, good poblano flavor, creamy and tangy sauce. Rice on the side was cooked in cilantro and chiles which is a better rice than normal Spanish rice. Guacamole was fresh and worth the table side prep price. Special drinks menu was interesting. read more

We were treated poorly from the second we walked in. I didn't catch the servers name, but just so the owners know, he was the one with the huge scar on his face. His name may have been William. He was mad that we came to the restaurant with our 1 year old son. Who is a complete angel and never made a peep the whole time we were there. My husband asked for the Nachos but with the sour cream on the side. The server said that wasn't possible, but it would be easy to avoid eating it. When we got it there was sour cream squirted all over the nachos, not a single bite without sour cream. The server didn't say a single word to us the whole time we were eating other than what can I get for you? Literally nothing. By far the worst service I have ever received at a restaurant. The food was also pretty disgusting. The nachos were basically a big pile of lettuce and sour cream. The enchiladas were edible, but definitely wouldn't be worth coming back for. read more
