Bought 3 dozen tamales for Thanksgiving for my sister and my mother (neither live in Boerne) they took them home and the tamales were complete mush. The instructions on the package for pre-heating were followed. We were asked to bring them in- kinda hard to do when none of the tamales were here. We were then refused a refund or anything to do to rectify the situation. We've been buying tamales here for YEARS and never had issues but after this- no more. This is a bad way to do business. We had our Chamber Ribbon cutting today at the Esperanza Community and I was pleasantly surprised by this catering company. I was told we'd have street tacos, tamales, beans and cilantro lime rice. Okkkkkkk... not a fan of cilantro. Nope, never, hate it. Well I'm here to say, pour some yummy beans over that cilantro rice and have a feast. I had sent an email the day after Thanksgiving, have hot had a response. I ordered 3 doz tamales for Thanksgiving and they ALL has little to no filling in them. I'm upset that it took me so long to finally try Chilito's but I'm glad I finally did. Service is always friendly and the food is always made fresh to order (not to mention delicious). Al, the wonderful owner of this place, is great! He really goes out of his way to give you exactly what you're looking for in his dishes. The street tacos will deceive you as you may think they're small but they really fill you! And although I've tried a few of their offerings, I have to say that I think my favorite dish from here is the Chilito Famous Bowl with asada. It's a hearty meal with savory steak, beans, rice, mixed in with some sweet potato fries, and topped with kika sauce (regular or spicy, your choice but I prefer spicy). This little place is located on the corner of Huebner and Babcock. We tried a sampler plate that had quesadillas, tacos, tamales and rice and beans. It was about $15, and we figured we could try a little bit of everything. Let's start with the tamales. These were unique in that they had cream cheese and jalepeno, they were okay. I guess I am a bit of a purist, because I like my tamales with pork meat. The quesadillas were full of meat and cheese, crisped up and very tasty. The tacos al pastor were okay, but lacked some of that spicy flavor I look for. The rice and beans were my least favorite, because they were combined in a cup. Finally decided to give this place a try. Interesting set up. But friendly and quick service. Got their famous bowl, one chicken, one steak. TONS of food for super cheap. But they were really greasy. My hubby liked his steak, but the chicken was so greasy I couldn't stomach more than a few bites. I pretty much just ate the fries off the top. I would come back to try other menu items though. I've been wanting to try this place and finally did today. I ordered the street taco meal (they don't sell single tacos) which came with 5 tacos and a cup of rice and beans for $7.50. Pricing was good but the tacos didn't have much flavor. I had 3 chicken and two beef tacos but tasted mostly spice and tortillas which led me to throw my last two tacos away. Definitely wasn't worth the accompanying calories. However, Customer service was great and only had to wait about 3 minutes for my food. The tacos looked great but unfortunately looked better than it tasted. Not sure if I'll give this place another try but if I do, it definitely won't be the street tacos. read more

Chilitos Express brings Latin flavors to Central Texas. The owner, Al Maldonado is originally from Peru and is hoping to expand the palates of local diners. I've eaten at Chilitos about 7 times. I started off with more traditional foods, breakfast tacos and "worst taco." All were delicious, tender tortillas and fresh ingredients. Chilitos makes delicious tamales that are filled with either cream cheese and mild jalapeno, or cream cheese and chicken. I thought cream cheese tamales would be very rich, but these are flavorful, delicate, and interesting. Chilitos has very good meats and the foods that feature meat are delightful. Try the meat empanada, in fact, try two. This week I tried two "white board" specials: The Caribbean Brisket Taco and the Loin Steak Taco. They are my current favorites. The Caribbean Brisket has brisket meat tossed in a Caribbean salsa and it is a bit spicy, but then, I love spicy. The loin steak taco has a creamy green sauce that was finger licking good. If you know what you want to order, you can call ahead, and leave a message and your call is usually returned quickly. On rush hour mornings, it's a good idea to call ahead. I keep asking Al when he is going to bring more Peruvian food items. He said it's been difficult because people are afraid to try new things. That seems both very sad and very true. Boerne is pretty conservative and bland in terms of food choices. But Chilitos is about 10 minutes from La Cantera, and San Antonio folks are bound to be looking for something besides the regular taco now and then. read more

I seriously can't rave enough about this place! The food was great and the hospitality EVEN BETTER!! The owner was so sweet with making sure we had everything we needed. Our kids were allowed to play on the play struxture while we waited for our food. We got the tamales, street tacos, and "the worst burrito"....all of which were excellent. The green salsa was a great addition to the food. If I had a complaint, I would say that tbe mild was a little too mild and the spicy was a little too spicy. Also, my sister said the quesadilla wasn't great (but I wouldn't trust anyone that orders a quesadilla at a mexican resturant). I wish I lived here so I could come back and try more! read more

Chilitos tamales have become a staple during our holidays. Order ahead or call ahead to see what they have left for the day bc they are made fresh! Try the jalapeño cream cheese. This was my biggest graving during my first pregnancy. I would stand in the long line every market days just to feed my cravings! I highly recommend the worst tacos! My other favorite is the burritos bowl. I've had this with chicken, pork, veggie and they are all equally delicious. When we have family other we order the sampler that has a little bit of everything, there is something for everyone. Tamales, empanadas, quesadillas, tacos etc! Another in the growing list of cool little places to eat in San Antonio with its own unique flavor profile. Chilitos Express has a pretty decent variety of stuff in its tasty menu. The best by far has to be their Chilitos "Kika's" sauce. This stuff is no joke and it is now even being sold at HEB. I bought a bottle and have almost finished it in only a week. Their Meat livers taco is amazing, the rice is different, but good. Also, I genuinely feel that their tamales belong among the top 3 best in San Antonio, but they are a little pricey compared to other offerings in town. Their location is easy to find, but tricky to access in traffic. Expect to wait a good while if there is more than one car because the place is TINY and drive through only. These last few items cost a star, but should not reflect the food, which is great. read more

Coming from the West Coast, I've found it hard to find some Mexican food that is similar to how it is back home. Many of the Tex-Mex food seems to lack flavor and compensated by drowning the food in sauce and cheese. Chilitos is the closest I've come to a truly satisfying Mexican food experience. The establishment seems very low-key compared to other nearby establishments but they've definitely made their food with more authentic ingredients. For what you pay, you get a lot of food and the service was quick and friendly. I'd definitely come back again! read more

We discovered this little gem as we were driving home on Babcock. It's technically a drive-through that shares its space with the Wells Fargo ATM and I suppose while one can actually drive through, it'd also be reasonable to park nearby at the numerous parking spaces available (free; for anyone reading that's coming from out of town and are doing Ctrl-F) and order at the window in person. Btw, the window is on the side of the building facing the Wells Fargo ATM. Now onto the food. It's good. It's affordable. It's not greasy. But let's be more effusive. The owner is a friendly guy and will wait as you face indecision over which item(s) to order. After you have ordered and are awaiting for your freshly made items to manifest (10 minutes), you can chat with someone, people/car watch, and be entranced by the tantalizing aroma wafting through. We've tried the items below as of this writing and can vouch for their satisfaction. Popular Items -Chilito's famous bowl ($8): nice sweet potato fries -That Quesadilla ($7.50): 12"; good hot and cold [eating one right now] -Chilito's Tamale Plate ($7.00): yes yes yes Las Tortas -El Cubano ($7.75) Chilito's Gourmet Tacos -Hell Taco ($3.25) My personal favorite is the Chilito's Tamale Plate, especially the cream cheese jalapeno. Try it. I'm not going to wax poetic about the the soft tamale dough with just the right amount of bounce or the creaminess of every bite but I think I just did. Oh well. For the choice of meat, I like the Peruvian Roasted Pork (similar to the texture of Chipotle's beef barbacoa) best. As for the mild or spicy sauce, I don't find the spicy sauce very spicy but then again, everyone's tolerance level is different. Met the owner, who explained the business has been around for over 6 years in Boerne, and now they are expanding into San Antonio. The building has had several business, including a drive-thru location for Wells Fargo. While the ATM remains, Chilitos has updated the building with paint and signage and I found it easily, located in front of the pawn shop in the corner shopping center. We ordered the Chilitos bowl, a quesadilla and two dozen tamales with mild sauce. Everything was delicious! The quesadilla was cheese filled and the steak had flavor. While the jalapeño pork tamales were good, the chicken & cream cheese was even better. The shining star was the bowl: filled with sweet potatoes fries, some of the best rice and beans ever, then brisket and sauce, the taste was balanced. The owner was kind enough to provide a sample of the spicy kika sauce. Both the mild and spicy are great - the spicy has a stronger kick if you don't have the cream cheese to cool off the spice. This place is awesome!!! The "Worst Burrito" is probably the closest thing to a Mission style burrito you can find in this town. The only thing is that it's a tad dry...the fries (yes, FRIES IN THE BURRITO) probably soaked up all that yummy kika sauce. If you're a fan of sauces, I suggest asking for extra in the burrito. The spicy version of the Kika sauce isn't very spicy, so feel free to go bold. The tamales are $1/ea if you choose to get it a la carte. They aren't great, but I think they're above average. My coworker had the Cuban sandwich and was really please with it, especially the chicharrones that come as a side. The only drawback is that the place isn't really "express." It took a normal time you would expect at any establishment to get our entrees out considering we were the only patrons at the moment. They are generous with their promotions/coupons. At the time we stopped by, they were offering $2 off if you provide proof of check-in on facebook. They have a stamp/loyalty card with $5 off on the 6th visit and a coupon if you order through grubhub. read more
