Out of the ashes of a Carrow's diner has risen a pocha. Pocha, in this case, is a Korean version of a pub. A pub is a place where drinking is a priority, but food is also important. Also, for the Mexicans out there, do not read "pocha" to mean someone who lost their sauce from living in America too long. Chimak is the name. About a quarter of the dining room is devoted Chimak, the remainder of the space is a sushi restaurant. They are presented entirely different, however, you may order from both menus. You can also move freely between both dining rooms. The Chimak space is darker with the lights slightly dimmer than those over in sushi land. It is made darker still from faux wood paneling and black chalk boards. Luminescence in the room comes from the large TV screens that show K-Pop videos. What else would they show? They serve a decent tteokbokki. The sauce isn't overly sweet like that of the Seoul based chain Halgatteok. It also isn't magma hot like those you find at the more sinister late night shops in Korea. They serve gyoza and not mandu. I suppose they decided to cross purpose their dumplings. Why serve two different, albeit very similar dumplings, from the same kitchen? It's mostly a Japanese fusion place, just stick to the gyoza, is the reasoning. The gyoza skins were from the store, but I'm fairly certain the pork filling was done in house. The wings are good. Nicely crisped even after being thoroughly sauced. They make you wish there was more of a focus on fried chicken here. The kimchi bokkeum bap is fine, not spectacular. They also have whimsical bar snacks like spam fries and cheese corn. Nothing here is spectacular, but it is something that doesn't exist in the IE. Sure we have our share of dubu houses. And there are Korean fried chicken places here and there: the worst among them is the chain bb.q Chicken. But this is our Pocha. Maybe if we treat it nice, other interesting places will come to the IE - Riverside, in particular, has a drastic lack of interesting places to eat. So, hat's off to Chimak. read more

I recently revisited chimak house twice this past month and both times the food was delicious and the staff was nice! It was fairly busy the times I went so the wait for food was little long, but I didn't mind the wait for good food. I love the cozy vibe this restaurant had; it's small, but I like how it's decorated with soju posters. The ambiance was nice with the kpop in the background and the lighting. I went at night one of those times and we ordered the 20 piece chicken wings with 10 original and 10 soy garlic. I love how the original had a bit of spice in it and the crunch was phenomenal. I also appreciate that it didn't need sauce to be good as the chicken wing itself had been seasoned/ marinated. We also ordered the corn cheese which was sweet and paired nicely with the spicy Ddukbokki. The other time I went, it was right when they had opened and I also got the 20 piece with original and soy garlic. I just love the crispiness of the chicken here and the consistency is great! The fries are nice and crispy and I was glad we got a decent amount of fries this time. The kimchi chicken fried rice was pretty good as well. It paired nicely with the chicken and the cabbage. I was super excited to try this place because I love wings especially Korean wings! This is the ONLY Korean wings place in Riverside so I had to check them out. We got the typical spicy soy garlic sauced 10 piece for 17.99. It had some heat and I could feel the fire. We got the first level and I thought it was spicy so I am assuming the other levels are much more spicier. The kick from that was plenty for me. The wings tasted fine but the size was disappointing. These were the smallest Korean wings I've ever had in my life and I've lived in Korea so I've had a ton of wings. We also ordered a "pitcher" of Korean beer and it came in a big plastic bottle. I assumed it would be draft beer in a pitcher container but it wasn't. I should have asked but I've never experienced that at a Korean wings place and especially where wings and "beer" is in its name. Chimek serves amazing, crispy korean fried chicken and savory side dishes in their pretty little space! There's popular Korean pop music playing on a speaker and dimmed lighting, which add a ton to the vibes. Not to mention the Korean idol posters put up all around the walls! I really wanted to like this place since I love Korean Fried Chicken, it's close to my house and the ambience was cute but it fell short on some things, mainly the service. We ordered, 1x small soy garlic wings, 1x small spicy soy garlic wings and the spam rice balls. The wings tasted great, serving size was good for me, but based off of how much fries they gave me, I could see someone else wanting more fries with their order. The spam rice balls were cold and for the price of $7.99 I would rate the appetizer no higher than a 2/5. Now let's talk about the service. My husband and I came here on a Saturday night, it was not busy at all, this place is still fairly new so we didn't think anything of it. We were sat at the table right by the entrance and there was only one other table right beside us and a couple more patrons on the patio area. We had our order taken and up to this point the service was great; we were greeted and seated promptly and the server that took our order was very nice; so from that initial interaction and based off of the reviews at the time I had high expectations. Once our food came another server brought out our chicken, she quietly said what each one was, placed them on the table and quickly walked away, she didn't offer any ketchup or dipping sauces, she didn't even stay long enough for me to ask about the sauces. I was waiting for her to come around again to ask, and by the time 10minutes had passed, we were already halfway through our meal. I kept looking over at the servers and they were just talking amongst themselves, one of them was even just texting. I ended up having to get up to the cashier area where they were to ask for sauces for both my husband and I. When the server came back to our table with the sauces for 2. She left one small container of ketchup and another small container of ranch, and quickly walked away again. At this point I didn't even want to bother asking for a set of sauces for myself so my husband I tried our best to share the single serving sauce. By the time the rice balls came out, which was supposed to be our appetizer, my husband had already been done with his wings; I haven't really been eating my meal because I spent most of that time trying to get the servers attention. When we finished our meal we were left sitting there waiting for another 10minutes for anyone to come by with the check and a water refill. Throughout this time I kept looking over at the servers to try and get their attention and they were just talking amongst each other, at one point they were both just sitting going through their phones. Even the table beside us was getting annoyed, and they didn't get their sauces until halfway through their meal either. Correct me if I'm wrong but I feel like sauce is a standard when you're eating wings... None of the napkin holders had napkins and one of the tables that left right when we got there was left uncleaned for 15minutes. I understand if these things were going on in a larger busy restaurant but there were barely any people there and this place is pretty small. If service was at least bare minimum okay, I would've rated this place more of a 3.5 because the wings would be a saving grace. But the service was just bad. I honestly feel though that the servers are either just really young and/or don't have enough training. This place is still new, I do plan on coming back to give this place another try but probably when a good amount of time has passed and they've got a better handle on their front of house. read more

The food here is AMAZING! If you love Korean style fried chicken you have to stop by!! It is a really tiny place, it's like they sectioned off a corner of a larger restaurant to make this. If you need to use the restroom you need to walk through the entire building and into the adjoining restaurant to reach them. For our entree me and my friend decided to split the whole order of the chicken nuggets (what they call their boneless wings) which was a pretty big serving. With the whole size, you pick three flavors. We got spicy garlic, sweet and spicy, and sweet and mild and they were all delicious. I'd rate each flavor a 10/10. The spicy garlic were the spiciest, and even the fries were seasoned to have a bit of kick to them. The plate came with a little salad, dipping sauces and some pickled radish. Service was okay, and could use a bit of improvement. We asked the waitress about how many wings were in the order and she said she didn't know. We also asked how spicy some of the flavors were and she said she also didn't know because she hadn't tried them. She was also not super attendant about or drink situation. She provided us cups of ice saying she'd be back with water and we had to remind her we still hadn't gotten it after she returned to our table a few times. I would normally rate this place lower due to the lackluster service but the food is SO GOOD. I'd definitely come back, the chicken here is so much better than other popular wing spots. I'm pretty sure I'm gonna make it a habit to come here often, I'm still thinking about how good the sweet and mild chicken was...
