First I want to say the fried chicken is awesome, had the original and the garlic fries chicken combo with the regular soju. Probably the best chicken I've had so far! Unfortunately the positiveness was short lived because the service was almost nonexistence! Tho it was a soft opening I expect the service to be awesome! To be fair, it wasn't the workers fault, because those who I can clearly identify as waiters and waitress were working their butts off. Unfortunately there were only three workers on the floor and most of them were behind the bar. Maybe we got it wrong by assuming that this is a more of a self service establishment but no one waited for us. There was a woman who was bussing two tables to accommodate her friends so I assumed she is one of the owners if not the owner of the restaurant, and the fact that she could walk behind the bar or just grab popcorn for her friends tells me she's someone who has control of the establishment. Came here with a friend and tried the original fried chicken hot ($12 small) and garlic flavored fried chicken ($13 small) with some Kloud beer ($7). The hot one wasn't spicy enough for me and on the dry side. The garlic one was a little better and crispier but a little too sweet. I've been on a Korean Fried Chicken (KFC) crave recently and based upon the reviews, I figured I'd start at ChiMek. It was quite crowded the night we walked in here, but a table was available, so we got sat down pretty quickly. The place was buzzing and everyone inside the restaurant seemed to be having a good time. We decided to order a small order of their Spicy Fried Chicken and a small order of their Soy Garlic Chicken. I enjoyed both types of chicken, but the Spicy Fried Chicken could have been hotter. The flavor on the Soy Garlic was very tasty. The chicken pieces were a bit small and I would have preferred to have the choice of party wings and drumsticks, like you get at some of the other KFC restaurants. The salad bar was pretty much wiped-out, so all that was left were some cole slaw and cabbage. Unfortunately, they didn't refill the Kim Chee, green salad or the Daikon radish, which I would have appreciated. They did have rice, so I got to enjoy something with my KFC. Service was quick and friendly, considering the place was packed. This place would be awesome to watch a game at. Seriously disappointed. Took my nephew here last night on a Friday and the place had only 4-5 tables. Saw the reviews on yelp and it dipped to 3 1/2 so I had a feeling something is not right. Debate if we should go in or go to Dae Bak because the fried chicken there is legit. We said fuck it might as well try since we're here already. 2 servers working on a Friday night. Service is slow. The only observation I'd like to make out to management is maybe providing the staff working more team members to help them out. The restaurant is at the back side of a small plaza with a Korean market (Kyo Po), Starbucks, and some other restaurants. There was plenty of parking and the restaurant is nice and big with a lot of tables for big or small groups. Not only is the restaurant nice, but the customer service here is EXCELLENT. The owner makes sure to give you prime service when you're here with such a welcoming smile. He gave us several specialty food items on the house to try along with all the other food that we ordered. We ordered the Korean Fried Chicken, Mussel Soup, Ddukbokki, and their fried squid. A HUGE plus is they have an all you can eat salad bar that pairs extremely well with the finger food here. The portion is excellent and the flavor is on point with all the food items we've tried. No one likes soggy fried food and the food here is definitely crispy and everything comes out fresh. It's been a while and I need to get my KFC crave fixed! My friend and I decided to give ChiMek a try since it's new and it doesn't hurt to try a new fried chicken spot, right? It's located in the same plaza as Gombei but facing the side of Lawrence Express Way, lots of parking available. Stepping into ChiMek around 5:45pm and still a lot of seatings left. There are TVs around and definitely great for the folks who are into sports. We got a large flavored friend chicken ($19.99) and did half-and-half of Soy Garlic and Sweet/Spicy. I didn't know we can do half-and-half but the server was very nice and told us it might fit our needs better. He was right! We could barely finish the large plate and packed 12 drumstick (altho they are mini) home. On top of that, we also got 2 16 oz beer. I really love the taste of both Soy Garlic and Sweet/Spicy fried chicken. Note that even it listed as Sweet/Spicy, it was not spicy at all and I am a non-spicy person -- so for the Spicy-land citizens, this won't satisfy you! 3-3.5 STAR. ChiMek isn't bad. It's a really nice restaurant with ample seating, plenty of TV's, and a great assortment of beers, but the food is just average. I think Bon Chon still has the upper hand over ChiMek, but it's still a great place to hang out with friends, catch a game, have some Korean wings, grab a beer, and take advantage of their "salad" bar. My friend suggested that we watch the Warriors game here this week and we obliged. We know that the wait at Bon Chon is always ridiculous, so we wanted to try out a different place. When we got there, we immediately got seated right in front of a nice flat screen TV. We ordered Combo #2 for $35.99 for 3 people, which gives you a choice of fried or crispy fried chicken, a flavored chicken order, and a pitcher of a craft beer. There are 3 other combo options, but I think Option #2 is best. We ended up getting the crispy fried chicken, with medium spice. For our flavored option, we asked for naked wings with 2 sauces on the side - we asked for soy garlic and Chinese style sauce. As for the beer, we got Allagash White. On the side, we also ordered a seafood pancake (~$15). The crispy fried chicken wasn't bad. Medium wasn't that spicy, but we definitely enjoyed the naked wings dipped in our sauce of choice a little bit better. The soy garlic sauce was definitely super garlick-y, and I think I enjoyed the Chinese style sauce slightly better. It was an ample serving of wings though (about a dozen medium spicy fried chicken wings, and a dozen naked wings for the flavored option). As for the seafood pancake, we've definitely had better. The one at ChiMek was a little too doughey for us, although it did have good chunks of seafood in them. The dipping sauce that it was served with was really good though. All in all, I think we need to go back to try ChiMek again. Currently, I have it at a 3-3.5 star rating. Their salad bar with complimentary popcorn, rice, kimchi, carrots and celery sticks, corn, radishes, etc. was pretty cool. But I think we need to try a different flavored option next time and maybe try some of the other dishes to get a better idea of what this place has to offer. Unfortunately, the Warriors lost that night we came, so that may have spoiled the experience. Will definitely give ChiMek another shot in the future though. read more

My friends and I were debating where to go eat and I was contemplating between Chimek and Von's, but so glad my friends chose this place. We got the kimchi fried rice, a large flame tossed half honey butter and half soy garlic, a regular flame tossed honey buffalo, and cheese corn (not pictured) My favorite was the soy garlic wings and kimchi fried rice! All of the wings were so crispy and juicy, it was amazing. The kimchi fried rice though... by far, one of the BEST kimchi fried rice i've ever had. We also got the mango nectar soju and peach yogurt soju. It's very dangerous, the peach yogurt was my favorite! The host was very nice and knew how to be a host for sure. The food was ok. A friend had a stomach ache right after eating the soy flavored chicken the pieces were thick so a lot of it was under cooked. Flavor-wise is decent. The service was terrible. They had only one server serving the entire restaurant even though it was his first day. The order was wrong and when confronting the cashier who could've helped a little more with the service she was insistent that the mistaken orders was right. My group was missing a plate of wings and the drinks, but were still being charged for everything. It took a good 20 to 30min to finally fix the receipt, but apperently they made us pay for another table as well(was able to void this later). Finally got to try ChiMek and I was pleasantly surprised!! Went at opening (5pm) on Sunday - and it was perfect - not busy at all - so got to pick our seats in front of the TVs we wanted! :) We tried the soy garlic chicken, the sweet and spicy and regular fried chicken. And we decided to be adventurous and tried their Tofu Kimchee Pork Belly dish... and I have to say - it was very good... included the flat rice noodles and green onions... very tasty... Out of the chickens I feel like we picked very well - LOVED both the sweet and spicy as it wasn't overly spicy - just the right amount with the sweet... and the soy garlic! YUMMY!! Next time we'll skip the regular fried chicken and go for another flavor. But HIGHLY recommend both the soy garlic and sweet and spicy! This place also offers free salad bar which includes carrots and celery with ranch, thousand island or honey mustard. All dressings were very good. OH and of course they offer the kim chee and pickled veggies... And my favorite - the popcorn! :) Given it was a Sunday - Giants game was over - we didn't get to try any of the tap beers but given the menu, the TVs all around and chicken wings - PERFECT place to drink and drink and drink! :) Next time for sure! I would have to say that the concept is pretty similar to 99 Chicken. ChiMek has a self serve salad bar, rice station and popcorn! The staff were friendly and were helpful. Among a girl and three guys, we shared a large order of half Garlic and Sweet and Spicy flavored wings. We were told the large order comes with 15 wings, but we got 14 ( not that it matters, but the boys were salty LOL). Aside from that, the flavors were exceptional. The wings were very well seasoned and I enjoyed the crispiness. I liked the environment, it had a "where the cool kids go" feel, were the vibes were just really chill. Speaking of chill, I thought it was a little cold inside, but thats probably all on preference. They have unlimited free sides at the salad bar and popcorn. Sometimes, they have fries, but I have been unlucky past few times. I wasn't able to get any since they were out. On my birthday, the manager/owner gave us some onion rings and blueberry soju on the house. That was really nice of them. What is a little different from the other KFC establishments is that their wings are smaller. But I do prefer this, since it is juicier and more flavorful. Recommendation: The one flavor that is fantastic would be the SOY-GARLIC. It is delicious! That is my go-to order every time. Also, prices are not outrageous. I find them very reasonable. Came here on a Tuesday night about an hour before closing (I'm so sorry to the kitchen/all other staff but I was starving after work!!!). The place was completely empty! But then again, it was Tuesday. Opted for combo #4 which came with a small order of fried/crispy chicken, another small order of flavored chicken, and soju. Unfortunately they didn't have any flavored soju yet but our server hooked our table up with a bottle on the house just to try! Dope. The crispy fried chicken (spicy) was okay, not bad. We also got soy garlic and even though we ordered green onion (one of their specialties), we got sweet & spicy instead. We decided to go with the flow and try it since I knew they were trying to close up and didn't want to send it back or waste any food. It ended up being my favorite out of the three! Haha. The place sucks! There salad bar was empty and they ran out of rice! And no side dishes. That was the whole point of me going to a Korean chicken place. The boneless chicken was made with dark meat not white, why would you make boneless chicken with dark meat! The flavor of the chicken was mediocre and nasty. My friend ordered a small soy chicken and I ordered Chinese style boneless chicken both dishes were underwhelming and depressing not to mention expensive over a dollar a piece for a little while for a little ass wing. I will definitely will not be coming again the only reason they have four-star reviews it so you get the 10% off your bill. Its self seating and there's music and TVs playing so it's OK to be loud and obnoxiously drunk there. They have a popcorn machine. Ooo! Love me some buttery popcorn.
