A visit to Baton Rouge isn't complete unless Chimes is part of the itinerary. Over the last few years I've come to realize Chimes is an institution. It's not the touristy haven some folks have made it out to be, it's just a great place to enjoy some quality food and have a good time. It's the center of the town, the taste of Baton Rouge, it might just be the most popular place in the city. While it has enjoyed enough success as of late to expand to other spots (one on the east side of town and the other in Covington, LA), this original location is still the best. This place truly does have it all - the perfect ambiance for brunch, a festive spot for dinner, the perfect LSU worthy meal, and some of the best pre and post-game atmosphere one could ask for. Along with the Bulldog (http://www.yelp.com/biz/the-bulldog-baton-rouge-2), there isn't a better beer selection in Baton Rouge. The multitude of beer taps is out of this world, literally (60 beers, 20 countries). From draft brews to international imports to beer mixes, the bar is crawling with all sorts of beer-y goodness. They also serve wine and cocktails as well, recommended are the "Swamp Bucket" and "Tigertini", as both are tasty mixes of potent spirits. Food wise, I think I could vouch for almost everything on the menu. Starters here are a meal in itself, perfect for sharing and are epic forms of bar food. The spinach and artichoke dip ($9) is as cheesy as it looks, delicious and gooey in it's own right. Another favorite are the Boudin balls ($7), are made in house, with a killer filling and fried to a perfect golden brown. The crawfish 3 cheese macaroni and chimes crab cakes are worth every bite and penny and the ever-popular Louisiana aligator tails are simply delicious, especially when served blackened and with the house special remoulade. PoBoys are massive here and super filling. My favorite is the fried oyster poboy, a sandwich ($7.50) stuffed with big crispy oyster bits that have plenty of juice and just enough crunch for a great bite. You can't lose choosing either the duck and sausage gumbo or the coveted seafood version ($7). The charbroiled catfish ($15) is mouth wateringly good, as is the crawfish etouffee ($10). I could go on and on, but most folks should come in and find out for themselves why The Chimes is time and time again the talk of the town. Feeling like a good happy hour? Do it here. Never tried Cajun food, eat it here. If the Tigers win or lose, this is the best place to be. Anyone who lives to eat, will find themselves in a foodgasmic wonderful here at Chimes. read more

If your looking for a great location to have some genuine creole / Cajun food in a elevated pub style establishment then look no further. Something on the menu for everyone's- spicy to super spicy- meaty to vegan. Service was great and had a nice "view". The food was well seasoned (except Boudan balls). Crawfish stew was amazing and deep in flavor with a tons of meat! Catfish ooboy was grilled and very tasty. The burgers are huge and the crawfish Mac was creamy, meaty and smooth. read more

As a visitor to Baton Rouge, several locals told me to go to this place. It did not disappoint! I loved the pub-like atmosphere it has, and the food certainly did not disappoint. I came on a Tuesday weeknight and managed to find a spot at the bar around 6:30. It was already getting crowded, so it was nice to just walk straight to the bar. The staff was very friendly and greeted me with a smile, especially when I told them I was a first-timer. I was also surprised how much beer they had on tap, and loved the selection. I received several recommendations, and settled on a "Featured" item recommended by my server, the Boudin Stuffed Bell Peppers. This came with Mac and cheese, a roll, and a side salad all for $13! The Boudin was delicious, and the Mac and cheese was some of best I've ever had-it had a little kick to it and I loved it. The roll even was super soft and actually very tasty as well! I couldn't believe how good the food was for the price, and the service was nice too. My only complaint was when it gets crowded, it gets crowded. It's very noisy so you have been warned that you may not be able to hear the person next to you if you sit at the bar. Other than that, awesome place!! Chimes has always been a favorite of mine! Both locations are great and I've been traveling. I was pumped for eating their brunch while I was in town. My friend requested we meet at Coursey location. BE WARNED they haven't been serving brunch for months @coursey apparently. They do serve brunch @highland though. Worst experience in Baton Rouge. I frequent Chimes East so I mistakenly assumed Chimes West (this location) offered the same service and GOOD food. Boy, was I wrong. I know for a fact that I'll never return to this location. Was told the Crab Royale wasn't available, although they had it yesterday, so settled for the Crawfish Royale. Definitely not what was delivefed: dry crawfish and mushrooms dumped onto the wet looking salmon. I returned it to be fixed, but it came back just as bad. No refills on drinks and table not cleared. Maybe this place was too hyped up to me or I've dined at better places since I graduated college, but I thought that this place was just okay. This restaurant is located right outside of the LSU campus. I remembered when I was in college without a car, there would be the local restaurants that I would dine in quite frequently. When you're a college student, you're not nearly as picky of a costumer when consuming food than when you're an adult. As for Chimes, the atmosphere is great! A bar like restaurant with plenty of seating, televisions, friendly workers, the ambiance and a unique Louisiana menu. You can order gators, crawfish, etc. If you're from out of town and visiting the LSU campus, this is the perfect place to visit to have a little taste of the south. It's no restaurant like in New Orleans, but it's a great place to visit if you're just going to be in the Baton Rouge area. Why a 3-star rating? It's strictly based on the taste of the food. I love the atmosphere, location and the food tasted just fine. It's just a preference of mine that I like to eat healthier foods and a lot of their menu items are fried. Fried foods = Unhealthy. Over the years, this type of foods just doesn't taste as good as they use to. No knock on this restaurant, but southern specialties is a type of cuisine that I don't enjoy eating too much of. Stopped by for beer and small eats. Beer selection is a 5 star. Wide ranging selection of craft beers from Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Missouri. So many taps, just to give an idea I counted 7 sours, 8 porters/stouts, 10 IPAs and a bunch of others. And many many more in bottle/can. Crawfish mac & cheese was rich and smokey. Flavor good but the crawfish didn't seem to add much. Would've been fine without it. Blackened alligator was cooked to a nice texture, not too dry. It paired nicely with the 'gator sauce' - a mix of horseradish and mustard. Fried pickles had a light batter that held its texture against the pickle's moisture - but just barely. What can I say that hasn't been said already? This is a MUST when visiting Baton Rouge. I suggest sitting at the bar, ordering up some delicious draft beer from their ample collection and take in the sights of locals and tourists alike. While you're observing, order some Boudin Balls or Blackened Alligator as this is the best place to get both dishes in town. If its Tuesday or between 4-7 on any other day, get a dozen oysters for half off - they're delicious! When ordering your entree, you can't go wrong with the red beans and rice. It's a standard issue dish but they just do it really well. The crab cakes and seafood Mac and cheese are also stupendous choices. If you're here on Sunday, their brunch is wonderful and they have great drink specials on mimosas and Bloody Marys. The Chimes is a staple of cuisine near LSU and a place where you'll find plenty of tourists and locals enjoying the deliciousness on a daily basis. read more

Very cool place on the campus of LSU. Killer area to come party and eat I imagine. Food was good. Seafood Pasta was delicious as I'm sure it always is in Louisiana. Decided to get some Blackened Pork Chops with Abita Root Beer Glaze. Kinda meh. I'm sure would've been better if eaten immediately off the grill. But not after taking it back to the hotel in styrofoam. Very dry and didn't really taste any RB Glaze flavoring nor any Blackened style flavor. Service was good... At least for me it was.... But they were incredibly rude to my work associate. I'm guessing because he's from El Salvador. Not many like him in these parts... Totally unacceptable and would never return as a result. read more

If I could give this review zero stars I would. A friends and I sat waiting to be greeted by our waitress for over 35 minutes. We sat in the roof over looking LSU campus. Our server took to orders of all the parties around us, drinks, appetizers and entrees. I made eye contact with her multiple times and she still would not acknowledge us. Good restaurant close to the LSU campus. We went there twice during our stay in Baton Rouge. It was crowded both times. The first visit was just to the bar for drinks and appetizers. They have an extensive beer selection. We did order the loaded cheese fries which were good and the boudin balls with a good dipping sauce. Our next visit was for lunch. The table got either the fish selections or po boys. I had the shrimp po boy which was loaded with a lot of fried shrimp on some really good bread. Let me first start off by saying that our server was great. I totally forgot his name but he's tall and blondeish. Took our orders swiftly, helped me decide between fried or blackened alligator bites, and warned me about the saltiness of the BBQ Shrimp po'boy before I ordered it. Refilled my water as needed and checked on us once, which is perfect. The food however... Blackened alligator bites were way too salty for their own good. It was also pretty damn tender for a piece of alligator, as the alligator I've had up north was a bit chewier and had a hint of the sea to it, which made it easily recognizable as alligator. Think frog legs. Now, this tasted like chicken. People usually wouldn't complain about something being too tender, but honestly, making it taste the way it did turns it into something else, and I'd rather enjoy the taste of alligator...as alligator. With that being said, I don't know why but the bites were extremely salty. This was to the point where I had to continuously dip it in the sauce to neutralize the saltiness as much as possible, but in doing so I had too much flavor of the sauce and not so much the alligator. I don't know if this is the reason why it was so tender but it could be an explanation. Now I was warned that the po'boy would be salty, but to be honest, it wasn't. Actually, the BBQ shrimp po'boy was quite good aside from the bread they used. It was slightly stale and thus tough to chew. The cheesy shrimp was fine...though I don't know why there was cheese on it. That being said, I didn't taste much BBQ either...so pretty much, what I GOT tasted good, but it didn't really stay true to what I ordered. The fries were nicely cut, crisp, and seasoned however, so kudos for that. Overall, average. Also, the gator bites were overpriced for the portion (and taste) of what you get. 11 dollars for a small dish....doesn't quite sit well with me. If I were an LSU student, this is where I'd be every weekend for the countless beers on tap and the delicious food. I ran the Louisiana Marathon the same day I came to check out Chimes Restaurant and I'm happy this was the first place I visited to celebrate finishing my first big race. Since I just burned ~3000 calories, I ordered myself these tasty appetizer items: 1) Half-dozen raw oysters 2) Blackened Alligator 3) Duck and sausage gumbo (cup) Everything was amazing and had the distinct Southern taste I was looking for. If you're by yourself or in a big group, absolutely get these dishes. My bartender was extra-awesome and the people I randomly sat next to made for some good conversation. The atmosphere here is pretty upbeat, people usually come here in groups. The Po boys are ok, the gumbo is one of a kind but not necessarily good, I've also tried the chicken breast which was ok. I tried the fried shrimp seafood platter and loved it-it comes with a salad, fries, and hush puppies. The boudin balls for appetizers are also great. I loved the red beans & rice with sausage. I only had problems with my cup because it was not clean at all. Other than that it's a pretty cool place to go to grab a bite and they stay open really late so if you have a night out you can stop here because chances are they will still be open. read more

The manager John is refusing to cancel an online order that I am not able to come pick up. I told them they should not be charging me for food I am not receiving. I asked where in the policy does it state orders cannot be cancelled and I was unable to get an answer because no where in the policy when ordering online does it state you cannot cancel. They had generous amounts of crawfish which i highly appreciated. the shrimp po boy was exactly what i wanted, toasted sub bread veggies n fried shrimp. i will add tho that their desserts were average nothing special to them. the service was also not bad but our server did take his time to check on us and i had to wave him down to get the check after waiting a good 15 minutes. It ended up being fine, fir example, I ordered the new orleans bbq shrimp topping for my salmon which I didn't get. We were driving through Louisiana so I was more excited to try the shrimp than the salmon so I feel like I sort of missed out but I still got a side of the sauce which was pretty good and made the salmon a lot better. He suggested a few local beers which were also great. My bf got the impossible burger with cheddar. No wonder this is one of the most talked about restaurants in Baton Rouge! The GRILLED SALMON was the best cooked salmon I've ever had. I asked for it to be cooked medium rare and it was cooked to perfection. It had no gamey fishy taste at all, just pure flavor. And the dill sauce they put on top was a perfect match. As soon as I tasted the SPINACH ARTICHOKE dip I was addicted. I regretted having to share with the table because I wanted it all to my self. Using fried bow tie pasta shells as chips was GENIUS! I've never tasted anything like that. MUST HAVE MORE! (If there is any other place using pasta shells as chips for dip in New Orleans let me know) Their bread rolls are soft, chewy, and delicious. This was right next to the LSU campus and there was about a 30 minute wait. We decided to walk onto the LSU campus while we waited for the text message from the restaurant. I think this was the first restaurant I had ever been to that texted us when our table was ready. This place was pretty busy and it had that college-environment feel to it mostly because of everybody who was there. The staff were friendly and our waitress was pretty nice. I didn't have that much money on me at the time so I opted for something inexpensive. I went with the Roast Beef Poboy ($10.95) because it sounded pretty good. I was eyeing the Pasta Alfredo with Blackened Chicken ($12.95) but I decided not to. Besides, one of my friends ordered that so I didn't have to. Our orders came maybe 10 minutes later but it was also pretty busy. The Roast Beef Poboy was delicious and just the right amount of food which got me full. I would recommend it! The fries were good as well. I also tried the blackened chicken and it was something I would've ordered and liked it. It took awhile to get our check but our waitress also had a bunch of tables so it was fine. I liked this restaurant so if I'm ever in Baton Rouge again, then I'd come back here to try other stuff on the menu. read more

Glad we went! The Chimes has been on the list for a while every time we visit Baton Rouge, and glad we finally went. We started with the crawfish fries which were smothered in cheese sauce with fried and boiled crawfish. These were delicious and it could have been my entire meal. However, we did get entrees too. I got the Abita rootbeer glazed pork chops with a side of steamed veggies. Overall they were good, a little too sweet for my liking, but if you like sweet glazes give them a try! I have to say I never leave negative reviews, unless one of two things happens I get sick from the food or the employees are rude. Placed an order on DoorDash tonight from chimes because it will review and looks really good. Delivery was made on time excited because it smells fantastic unfortunately there was no utensils what condiments of any kind. I'm sorry fried catfish should always come with tartar sauce or even cocktail sauce and I can't eat anything without utensils. OK mistakes happen but here's where the bird gets under my saddle. I called the restaurant to say there were no utensils otherwise no condiments. And I got a snippy little remark that was not their fault and it was not their responsibility that it was DoorDash his responsibility to pull the condiments themselves and pull the utensils. I have to say I will never eat in this place again and I recommend people stay away from it the food wasn't all that good even though the smell was fantastic. Or maybe just because I was traveling all day anything would've smelled good. read more
