Chin Hills is a barebones, basic Korean and Burmese restaurant in a depressing strip of Kenmore. Eating there I was left wondering why it exists. The atmosphere is almost aggressively uninspiring and run down and the waiter is grumpy and completely disinterested in his job. The food was not terrible, just kinda lazy, amateurish and needlessly mediocre. Okay for Buffalo, I guess, but it wouldn't stand up in a more cultured city. The banchan that came with the main dishes were boring and disappointing. I wouldn't chose Chin Hills over Arirang or Koreana, although they are not great either. If you've never had good Korean food you might be fine with it. read more

This Korean-Burmese restaurant is tucked in on a strip mall on Elmwood Avenue. My husband and I actually drove here once to check it out, but it looked really run down from the outside that we didn't go in. Today, we thought we'd give it another try. The inside decor is definitely not the best. This was probably an old Japanese place because you can see the sashimi cases in the front of the restaurant. They also sectioned off the places with see through curtain-like drapes, which was interesting. They have decorations hanging from the walls and a piano randomly sitting in the front of the restaurant. The food is definitely more Burmese than Korean. Being Korean, I can't say that the food was super authentic. At the same time however, it was definitely more authentic and flavorful than any of the other Korean places in the area. My husband ordered a Beef soondubu and Haejangguk. You can choose the spicy level: mild, hot(?), spicy, Thai spicy, extremely spicy. We both ordered ours Thai spicy, and it was just right. The side dishes aren't traditional Korean side dishes either, but they were still pretty good. Each dish was about $10-12, and for our meal, we paid about $24 (minus the tip). In the last week I have literally had Thai 4 or 5 times from some of Buffalo's top rated Thai restaurants, I've just recently dabbled into Thai- don't really know why I waited so long to try! Yesterday my friend and I stumbled upon Chin Hills by accident but are so glad we did! We ordered Pad See Ew and Pad Thai both with beef. $12 for each (dinner) which already is less compared to the other places I have tried. The food was ready in a timely fashion which made our hungry stomachs even more satisfied once we got home (we opted for take out.) I was so impressed that not only was the portion size the largest out of any places I have gone to thus far (who doesn't love leftovers!) BUT we also got a few complimentary sides to go with our meal! Fish cakes, Kimchi, pickled cucumbers, pickled broccoli and some type of roasted potatoes as shown in my photo. This is the first time I received anything like this which gives Chin Hills an edge over their competitors. The Pad See Ew again was a pretty hefty portion- easily enough for two people to share or for a meal the next day! The one thing I was missing in the dish was more sauce. Next time I will definitely ask for more sauce, as my friend's Pad Thai also could have used more sauce. I added a bit of water and microwaved it and that helped, but ultimately the sauce is necessary for flavoring and that is something other reviewers have pointed out. The flavor was not all the way there compared to other versions I have had, but I am going to blame that on the lack of sauce. The dish was still enjoyable and I certainly had no problem finishing it so I guess what does that tell you! Just discovered this place.. where have you been all my life! The Dolsat Bibimbap was stellar. The bowl was so perfectly heated that it kept crisping the rice all through the meal. And the volume of food was exceptional - much more than my $10 would buy anywhere else. My friend had the bulgogi, which was basically a Mountain of meat. He thoroughly enjoyed it. I have tried the scallion pancakes and vegetable dumplings and both appetizers are always fresh and delicious. My favorite entree to get is the soondubu jjigae with tofu and kimchi because I don't eat meat and it is always fantastic! All of the sides served with it are always wonderful aswell. This place is awesome! Great srrvice better food! Finally some great Korean food in Buffalo. Came here for dinner and got a seafood pancake, kimchi stew and Bolsot. Seafood pancake was light, fresh with herbs and pieces of seafood like squid and shrimp. Perfect way to start a meal. Kimchi stew came bubbling in a clay pot. Very flavorful and also came with tofu, glass noodles and pork in it. There are different types you can get. Bolsot is a rice bowl that comes out in a blazing hot stone bowl. Best part is the rice on the bottom gets really crispy. We ordered the seafood one and it also had veggies like peppers and onions in it. Everything was fresh and tasted excellent. Finally got to try Chin Hills after admiring photos posted by other Yelpers and reading their glowing reviews. For pretty good Korean food at very reasonable prices, Chin Hills does not disappoint. My husband and I started with the pajun (scallion pancake), which was a little bland on its own, but the soy dipping sauce that came on the side perked it up. We both ordered the dolsot (stone pot) bibimbap, with tofu for me, and beef for him. The stone pots were still sizzling when they arrived at the table. The egg on top of my pot still had a runny yolk, which I was happy to see (because the stone pot is so hot, the yolk gets cooked when you mix it with the rice and veggies). Adding the spicy sauce that comes on the side is a must. We also got the complimentary banchan, the veggie side dishes that are typically served with meals at Korean restaurants. If you don't eat seafood, you won't be able to eat all of the side dishes, as some of them use fish products, so tread carefully, but this is pretty typical of banchan in general. What I didn't love: the floors and our table were kind of sticky, though there were decorative touches throughout the dining room to boost the ambiance. My only other complaint would be that all of our food came at once. We had just started eating our scallion pancake appetizer, when the side dishes appeared, followed no more than a few minutes later by our stone pots. We can be pretty fast eaters, but I felt rather overwhelmed by all the food arriving at once. Still, I'll gladly come again to try more of the menu. If other dishes are on par with what we got on this first visit, I'll be a very happy diner. read more

I must admit that I was quite sad to hear that Orchid's closed, but wow, Chin Hills is even better. I ordered take out from Chin Hills and the food was absolutely phenomenal. We ordered the dumplings, kimchi soup, and duck bbq. Unfortunately, I did not take photos of the duck because we ate it too quickly. The dumplings are crunchy on the outside and have a fantastic soft inside. They're accompanied by a tasty sauce. The kimchi soup is absolutely fantastic and the perfect meal for when you're sick. The spice really clears out your sinuses. Chin Hills is now my favourite place to order kimchi soup. Now, the duck bbq is out-of-this-world amazing. The dish must have come in about 10 different containers. The main container contained the duck, while the other ones were filled with a variety vegetables and sauces. The duck was extremely tender and flavourful. The small vegetables and sauces were also great and perfect for the duck. Chin Hills has great quality food and is very affordable. Their lunches are less than $10, which is a great deal. Their dinners are about $15 or less. It's really worth driving to Kenmore to eat it. Overall, I was extremely impressed by Chin Hills and would highly recommend it. Perhaps the best Korean food in Buffalo. Definitely try the duck bbq. read more

Updating because I tried more dishes! This time we got kimchi pancake, deep fried boneless chicken in spicy sweet sauce, bulgogi dolsot, and kimchijjigae. The kimchi pancake was very substantial for the price and the chicken is a must have. I felt like the bulgogi dolsot and kimchijjigae were spot on. I can't wait to go back to try out even more dishes!! I know with my last review I was a bit disappointed with one of the dishes, but I think the ones I had this visit completely made up for it. This is why it's always worth going back and trying different dishes at a restaurant, because if you don't you might miss out on the real good stuff! Loved the experience here - great prices, food and decent service. I had the seafood pancake as an appetizer. It was decent, but I wouldn't order it again. I'd probably try the kimchi pancake next. I had the duck BBQ for my order, while my friend ordered the bibimbap. I tried a little of her dish. The duck was delightful -- prepared very nicely with some great spices. I got the lettuce wraps on the side, which perhaps was traditional, but for $2 extra -- all you get is a few lettuce wraps, and like 5 cloves of garlic, so I'd probably skip on those next time. The bibimbap was the star of the show though and I loved it and would order that next time I came in. There is also some Thai food here and you get a ton of sides since it's a Korean place. Oh yeah!!! This place has great food and great service. I am not really knowledgeable about Korean food, I've only had it once before and it was like a million years ago in NYC. I come here for a late dinner, close to 9pm, and the place was empty. The service was fast and friendly the place has simple decoration and is very clean. We ordered Thai Iced tea, it wasn't my favorite and Madugui (A4) for appetizers, those were really good. Also really cute looking. For our main entree we had Binimbap (R2) and Jaeyok Kimichi (F3). The two were fantastic and the serving sizes were pretty large. We had to take half of it home. The split pea soup was also very good. This is a great new addition to the Kenmore neighborhood that just recently opened up. The food is very good. The menu said it was Korean and Burmese, but the menu had some Thai and Vietnamese items too. I ordered bulgogi dolsot which is a rice dish with shaved beef served in a stone pot. It was delicious, very flavorful. The rice had a nice crisp on the bottom like you'd expect from being in a stone pot. My friend had pad Thai. It was good but pretty standard pad Thai. We shared an order of spring rolls as well. They were also good. They had a different texture and taste than I have had at any other place, with a crisp and fresh interior. We also got a complimentary order of daktuigim which is a crispy and delicious chicken in a sweet and spicy sauce. We also got like 6 other dishes (not sure if this is a typical thing) including potatoes, broccoli, Kim chee, fish cakes, a cucumber dish and a pickled radish dish. They really seemed to go the extra mile and were very welcoming and that was appreciated. The prices were very reasonable ($27) for all that. This server was very attentive and the food came quickly, but he was unable to answer questions we had about the menu items, which I suppose is understandable since they are fairly newly opened. I've had takeout from here twice in the past 2 weeks. Both times had good and bad moments, but all in all this place has decent food. The first time we ordered food I got the pho. I love this Vietnamese soup and was glad to see it on the menu. Unfortunately, I had a bad experience pouring it into a bowl for my consumption. I accidentally spilled some onto my hand, which caused a first degree burn that didn't stop hurting until the next day. Soup shouldn't be served that hot! Strangely enough, the soup, once cooled, was delicious. They provide small sides of kimchi and vegetables for every order, which is neat. Today, my fiance and I got takeout again. This time, I opted for chicken Pad Thai. This one didn't taste that great. It was just okay. There was no peanut sauce on it and the peanuts themselves were whole, not ground. The noodles and dish on a whole looked a little anemic. There was little color and flavor besides spiciness. My fiance's bulgogi order was much better. I suppose that at this Korean restaurant, it's best to get just Korean food. I can't say for sure if we'll order from there again, but it's too bad we were underwhelmed since the service is fast and friendly. Over all, I recommend this restaurant for Korean dishes but no other type of cuisine. read more

I dont have a lot of experience with this cuisine, but I was definitely interested in trying them after I looked at their menu. We ordered the duck & beef entrees. What they didn't mention on the menu is that it comes with a bunch of little sides that you share. I couldn't even tell you what all of them were. We ordered some apps, the seafood pancake was a bit much for me.. The host told us that was their best seller so we gave it a try.. The dumplings were pretty tasty! We ordered a classic scallion pancake. It was about the size of a plate was served cut in 4 slices. The pancake is impossible to cut with the chopsticks. The waiter saw us struggling and offered us forks. It was served with a side of soy sauce. It was cold outside so I was in the mood for a classic soup. The chicken udon had some carrots, greens (not sure what kind), snow peas, onions, a bit of cabbage. It was served very hot. My friend who had the beef dumpling soup loved the glass noodles, he described as"long silvery pearls." I would come to this place again. read more

We ordered pickup for a quick weekend dinner and really enjoyed our meal! Our food was ready in about 15 mins and packed up well, no messy or oily bags of leaky containers. We didn't really check out the interior of the restaurant, but the server we met was quick and friendly. We got two appetizers, the Maeun saewoo tuigim (sweet & spicy fried shrimp) and jjinwang mandu (vegetable dumplings), as well as an order of shrimp pad Thai and pad see ew. The dumplings were more of steamed buns with tasty filling, but I have a sneaking suspicion there was some form of ground meat in the filling. I meant to ask before ordering, but forgot so vegetarian/vegans be aware and ask first! I generally assume any dish labeled "vegetable" whatever doesn't have meat, but that's not always a safe assumption. My bf didn't enjoy the shrimp appetizer, they were soggy by the time he ate them and had a bland, watery taste, according to him. Our noodle dishes were both fantastic and came with a plethora of veggie sides and kimchi! The noodles were cooked and seasoned well with fresh ingredients. I asked for the pad see ew to be made with tofu instead of the meat options & without any eggs, and it was prepared exactly as requested! I love when restaurant staff actually listen to special requests/modifications and honor them properly. We both ate our entire dishes and didn't feel bloated or uncomfortable, no MSG headaches or the itis! Overall, great first experience here and we will happily return to try more. Very good!! I'm so happy we have decent Korean food in Kenmore!! We ordered the beef dumpling appetizer (hot, nice and crispy, dipping sauce had just a touch of heat to it which was nice) and kimchi pancake appetizer (great flavor, I loved the tang of the kimchi). We ordered the japchae and bulgogi for main course. Flavors were on point for both. I'm used to smaller glass noodles for the japchae, and the bulgogi didn't come out sizzling like I really enjoy (when it sizzles it has great caramelization), but the flavors of the bulgogi were all there.
