Over cooked bland 1. Chicken Chop Suey
    Ingrid S.

I wish I could get my money back.... that should tell you everything. I was excited to try this place, it's so close to my home, and their pictures look so appetizing. I understand businesses are doing what they can during these times, But man I've never been more insulted in my life by bad , tasteless food. This has no excuse. I ordered chicken chop suey, it was not only bland , but the chicken had a weird consistency, it was white and slimy looking , and so squishy in your mouth. No vegetables either just a bunch of celery and bean sprouts. The next dish was beef broccoli , again ,same meat consistency and bland. It looked so good, but unfortunately it was like chewing on a rubber band. The only edible thing we're the broccoli and carrots Next... pork wonton soup... don't even, wontons were over cooked , broth bland! It was literally like drinking hot water. With cabbage and bean sprouts. A tragedy. We also got a side of egg rolls... bland... Rice . The only edible thing. $30 in the trash , I know it's a small amount, but I mind when it's spent on food for my family. My husband even tried cooking the chop suey at home. Still chicken was gross to eat. Gelatinous , over cooked meat. Ended up ordering pizza. I'm disappointed and honestly mad. Never again.

    Strange potstickers (6) $8.50

In my ongoing quest to find a nice, cheap, basic, tasty Chinese place in Reno, on Tues December 21st I decided to open up my UberEats app and order from China Lee. The best I can say is that it wasn't the worst Chinese takeout I've ever had. I got an order of (6) potstickers ($8.50) which were just okay. Not bad, but not good. They lacked that smooth wrapper and pan sear that I crave in a dumpling, and they were only half full of filling, which could be the result of cooking, I don't know. The wrapper had a grainy kind of texture that was odd for a potsticker. It's evident in the photo, and the photos posted by other Yelpers. Second was an order of (3) "egg rolls" ($4.50) which are actually SPRING ROLLS, but pretty much no restaurant I've found correctly discerns the two, so I won't quibble. However, the "egg rolls" were also quite "meh." Nothing inside but cabbage. Not bad, but not good either. Third was the Wor Wonton soup ($12.50), which despite being salty, was the winner of the order. The broth was tasty, made better by a little dilution with water. It was what Wor Wonton soup SHOULD be (are you paying attention, China Kitchen?) stuffed with goodness; sliced pork, pieces of chicken, a generous portion of shrimp, lots of wontons and the usual cabbage and green onions et al. I'd order it again. For entrées I ordered Honey Walnut Shrimp ($15.50) and Beef with Snow Peas ($14.50). They looked good, but I only got one bite of the shrimp and tossed the rest. It tasted exactly as you'd expect shrimp rolled around in and covered with cinnamon-roll frosting to taste: sickeningly, cloyingly sweet - inedible. Walnuts and broccoli were inexplicably on the side. A positive - the broccoli was fresh (not frozen) bright green, cooked perfectly al dente and tasty. I wished I had a container of that instead of the cinnamon-roll shrimp. The beef with snow peas was less than "meh." Nice big pieces of velveted beef and fresh snow peas and some sliced carrots. The sauce was okay and the seasoning was good but the beef was RAW inside. Please do not ask me how thinly-sliced beef could possibly be raw, but look at the photo - it was. There's a place for rare beef, but a Chinese dish such as this just ain't it. I'm sorry, China Lee. My quest continues.

    2. Sweet and Sour Pork

The food is really good. We ordered the vegetable fried rice, cashew chicken, and sweet and sour pork. The sweet and sour pork came without sauce on it but on the side. This made the pork super hard and crunchy, never had that before, is that normal. Beside that everything was super good. The sweet and sour sauce wasn't the best but it was good.

It's been about 4 years since the last time, I tried the food here and since I was hosting about 10 people at my home, I wanted to serve something simple and cost effective. My goto for this is Chinese food. I ordered chicken chow mein and stir fried mixed vegetables. It came in two trays and enough from probably closer to 15 people. So portions were good but the total bill was between $120-$130 about what I've come to expect here in Reno. Let's just say, I've traveled to several countries in Asia and lived most of my life in Northern CA eating quite a bit of Chinese food. This doesn't make my an expert but it would be fair to say, I am quite familiar with what is considered mainstream traditional Chinese cooking. But let's get to the food, with the caveat that I realize that everyone's preferences can vary widely when it comes to food. So my opinion is based on what one would find in Hong Kong and San Francisco. The chicken chow mein had all the correct ingredients, long noodles that were slightly thicker than say spaghetti, had the correct amount of softness without being mushy. Chicken was presented in slices and appeared to be white meat, there was some white onions thrown in there for some texture and flavor. Normally when I order chow mein, it isn't served with a brown "gravy". Not that this dish was swimming in it, but think of spaghetti with tomato sauce. Replace the red with medium dark brown and you get the picture. Now my guests who are Reno locals, thought it was great and flavorful. I would agree with the flavor part but it was much too saucy for my tastes. Would I try Chin Chin again for noodles? I'm not sure but the owner did state, they can make dishes any way I like, so perhaps I'll order off menu next time. The stir fried mixed vegetables is where I was most disappointed. Let's start with the ingredients. All were sliced in 2-3 inch pieces, which included button mushrooms, zuchinni, bamboo shoots, brocolli, carrots, and onions. This dish could have passed for a savory vegetable stew. There was a lot of gravy, so much so, that it colored all the vegetables brown, except for the carrots. The sauce had a slight "twang" to it, almost vinegar or worchester-like. Not my thing, I could not taste the individual flavors of the vegetables because of how heavy the sauce was. The brocolli was over cooked where the flowerette parts were pale. I prefer my vegetables to be just cooked, almost snappy. I would not order this dish again. No comments on the restaurant itself as both times I tried it, was for take out. So bottomline, would I try Chin Chin again? Yes but I will be very specific on how I would like my order prepared. Maybe for their lunch special.

Traditional Vietnamese or Chinese cuisine IMO, is difficult to find here compared to the Bay Area. But that's not the fault of Reno, it's just the number of asian restaurants are so much fewer here and all the produce is literally imported. My goto when checking out a chinese restaurant is their chow fun noodles. Why? The noodles are perishable and if frozen the texture becomes a bit mushy, not firm. Was the noodle fresh, yes but with the cavet that it was probably imported day or two earlier. There are no local noodle makers in Reno. The dish was prepared in traditionally with a slight twist. Garlic, lots of minced garlic. Not complaining, as this is unusual for chow fun noodles to get amost a fourth of a garlic bulb worth. I ordered the mixed protein version with chicken, pork, and beef. There was a slight sweetness to the dish, which I am atributing it to sugar. Which again is unusual but a welcome addition like the garlic. My last visit was when some relatives visted from the Bay Area and we had lunch. I didn't want to take a chance on the food that they may not be used to, so we choose SK Noodle. Eveyone had their vietnamese Pho and grilled dishes and so far SK did dissapoint any of the Northern CA food snobs! I will be back.
