We live in Livonia, MI and have a cottage in Gladwin. We went to Midland to go to the movies and out to eat. Found the China Palace on yelp and since it got good reviews, we thought we'd check it out. The eggrolls were very good, fresh tasting and crispy vegetables. We also ordered the General Chicken (minus all the vegetables except for broccoli) and it was absolutely delicious. We also ordered the Yummy Shrimp and that also was amazing. The portion sizes were huge. The staff was very friendly and made sure we had everything we needed. It's a hard place to find because the front does not face the main street, but it was worth finding it with the GPS. I definitely would go back again to eat there. read more

Love this place. In town for business but needed lunch. Buffet looked really good. They had just brought out the dishes. What a spread. Everything was so good and fresh to boot. Veggies in dishes were crunchy an colorfull, as they should be. A big tray of fresh chilled shrimp and several shrimp stir fry type dishes were offered. The chicken and beef dishes were equally flavorful and tender. We have been eating here for many years and although we live in Rochester, MI we love to come here frequently when we go thru Midland on our way to Clare to visit family. Not terrible, but definitely subpar. The Orange and General Tso's chicken are both listed as "spicy" but don't taste like it at all. Honestly, they both tasted like they had the same sauce. The crab rangoon had no crab, just cream cheese. The lo mein tasted like lifeless noodles. And my husband said the egg drop soup tasted like melted butter in water. Edit, I'm upgrading my rating from1 to 3 stars. There has been some improvements to this place. The buffet is still terrible, but their takeout has improved a lot and is quite good now. The bathroom has been cleaned up and remodeled. Can't believe people can think place serves good food. Been there twice which was enough. The food was not very good, and the second time we ate there, my whole family came down with diarrhea the next morning.. Plus, if you really want to be grossed out, check out the Men's bathroom. I've been coming here for years but since covid I haven't been able to get out here. We ordered online and picked up our food and was happy to see many ppl waiting for food so that should mean it was fresh. To my disappointment the food tasted like it had been made and sitting around all day under heat lamps. The egg rolls had some funky grey cabbage and sprouts (rotten) and the crab meat cheese were very very small and burned. Just feel let down because this was my go to and the food was not good this time. My favorite Chinese Restaurant in Midland. We've been coming here for close to 20 years. It's crazy I know, but every time we come back into town we stop in no matter what. Favorite dishes are: Yummy Shrimp/Chicken, Empress Beef. You really can't go wrong with anything on the menu. My son Brandon loves the Sesame Chicken. I'm starting him out young. Today we all did the Buffet and it was great as usual. The Hot and Sour soup is unmatched by any other Chinese place we've ever been to since. read more

As a testament to the quality of this establishment, my track record should be noted. I have lived in Midland for the majority of my life. For the past six years, I have been elsewhere in Michigan attending college and graduate school, though I kept ties in Midland that required me to venture back periodically. Every single time I visited Midland in those six years, I went to China Palace for what is one of my favorite meals of all time: 1 Order of Eggrolls (2 eggrolls) Hot and Sour Soup Princess Chicken It is, by far, the best Chinese meal I have ever had, including meals in various ChinaTowns around the country. Some people have an issue with the decor. It is decorated in a pagoda-esque style, and perhaps could use some new wallpaper and such. But I really could care less about it. I usually get takeout, which is just as delicious as if you eat there. Service is fast when you do dine in, and always friendly. I definitely recommend this place. read more

This is my go-to Chinese buffet during lunch. The food always looks fresh and hot, plus there's a good amount of variety. There's around 10 hot items to pick from (plus soup), which for me is a good number and there are normally some vegetarian choices and sushi. You'll leave feeling overstuffed and greasy, but I think most people expect to leave a Chinese buffet feeling a little bloated. I also like to order off the lunch menu -- the portions are HUGE. Unless you have a huge appetite, you can get at least 2 lunches out of it. I wouldn't call any of the options here "healthy" but you can build a reasonably nutritious meal off of the lunch menu if you're smart about it. read more

This is the best Chinese place in Midland in my mind. It has a great buffet not to big so everything is fresh. Friendly owners and service staff. Mongolian beef is my favorite thing that I get all of the time. They pretty much know when I call what I'm going to order. Wish more places were like this one. I would say this place is probably closer to a 3.5, but I rounded up because I really haven't had decent Chinese food in a while and couldn't really remember anything that was better. My boyfriend and I were visiting his family in Saginaw over Christmas and they really enjoy this place, so we decided to get some takeout from there on Friday night. Since we did eat out, I can't really comment on the restaurant or the service or anything like that. We ordered quite a selection of food, including sesame chicken, beef and broccoli, sweet and sour chicken, and orange chicken. Also scored some egg rolls and crab rangoon (although I think they call it cream cheese crab or something like that). Everything tasted pretty good, except for the egg rolls. I just wasn't a fan of the flavors in that, although maybe it was just me because everyone else seemed to like them. I really enjoyed the sesame chicken the most out of everything that I tasted, although it was all good. I would definitely order from China Palace again, and it seems like the buffet it pretty good as long as you get there when the food is fresh. If we're ever in the area again (which I'm sure we will be) then I'll see if we can stop in for the buffet instead of ordering out. read more

I've only been here for their lunch buffet, and I've been very happy with it with next to zero complaints. I actually can't even think of a thing I don't like about this place. It's really cheap, and a good selection of meats and dishes on their buffet. The servers have always been polite and attentive. Great flavors and portions at an excellent price. Their regular rice is different, but quite tasty, if you want plain rice I imagine you could ask for it. I come to Clare at least every summer to visit family, and am very pleased with this place. The quality is right up there with my usual haunts in South Orange County, California, and the prices here are better! read more

This place is awesome! Definitely the best Chinese food we can remember eating. My husband had the sweet and sour soup, it was a clean light vinegary sour with egg, he loved it. I had the egg drop soup. It was very light in flavor and thick. There were frozen peas in it which was kinda weird, but it was still great. We shared the beef with broccoli and shrimp with garlic sauce. We asked for both of them to be made without sugar and there was no problem with our request. The beef was super flavorful and broccoli was crispy, to our relief, since soggy broccoli is one of my husbands least favorite things. The shrimp with garlic was also delicious, I really liked the amount of garlic, it wasn't overpowering but you knew you were eating it. read more

Incredible! I am so happy to have found this little gem hiding in the Midland Plaza. Do not let the depressing decor of the outside, distract you from the delicious adventure your taste buds are about to experience. Our order was: Veggie lo mein 2 orders of general tso chicken Schechewan Beef 1 of each soup Crab Rangoon Flavors were nicely blended and not overwhelming. Nothing was bland nor was it over-seasoned. We went back for dinner recently and I am now an even bigger fan of China Palace! This time I got the spicy bean curd (deep fried instead of stir fried tofu) and the portion, at only $8.50, was larged enough for my dinner, plus lunch for two days. They were VERYgenerous with the tofu, and it was cooked very well. I especially liked that it was much smaller pieces of tofu than I normally get at a chinese restaurant. The spicy sour soup was less salty this time around, and has now been moved to first place for the best hot and sour soup I've had in a long time. Very friendly, and very prompt service. Quality has gone down here quite a lot in the past couple years. I always order entrees instead of the buffet, so maybe that's the difference. I notice that I always feel queasy when I leave, and the place never looks very clean. I do like that they have a much wider variety of dishes than Pi's, including spicier sauces (which is my preference.) I honestly think that if Gordon Ramsay showed up here, this place would definitely end up on Kitchen Nightmares. If they invested in some better lighting and some dishes that weren't chipped, this place might not seem so much like food poisoning waiting to happen. read more

This is by far the best Chinese food in midland. Better then Pis and bamboo garden. Genji and Gangis Kahn are owned by the same family as China Palace so yeah they are good as well. But for this kind of food its the best. My mother grew up in the orient so she knows good chinese thats not to americanized which is what you get in most restaurants. The food is always hot, staff is always friendly and owners are amazing people. Fave yummy chicken with extra spice and crab ragoon god i miss it. I have eaten here before, never impressed, but this is in Midland, a veritable desert of decent food. Today will be my last visit. I sent my legal assistant to pick up a take out order. While mediocrity is on the upper limit of the capabilities, they didn't quite reach it today. While, less than mediocre food in a restaurant of questionable cleanliness is bad, what was maddening is the fact that cutlery is not sent with the order. Upon calling, the person answering the telephone explained that I should have ordered them on the side. I have never heard of such a thing. This restaurant used to be my favorite in town, because they matched the price of all the other Chinese buffets but had better food. The service was meh, but it didn't matter a whole lot because you got your own food. Now, however, this restaurant is surprisingly my least favorite in town. The food has gone slightly downhill, and it's rare that they have yummi chicken or shrimp on the buffet, but stick to the cheaper foods from their menu. The service has gotten even worse, where before you would get no refills of your drink after your bill was presented (their subtle way of telling you to get out), now you're extremely unlikely to get a refill during the meal either. And to put the cherry on top of all of this, the cost has gone up 3 dollars per person and the drinks have gone up a dollar a person, making the entire meal significantly more expensive than any other buffet in town. read more
