Came here from outta town to hangout with family and friends. We wanted some good Chinese food and we were disappointed. My boyfriend payed $67 for 3 people. They are super expensive for poor food. The chicken was undercooked and the crab shell was soft. We spent a lot of money just to leave feeling hungry. They also tried pressuring my bf to tip before we even got served. After we ate some food we realized how bad it was. I left a good amount on my plate and the lady server started talking to the front desk man in Chinese and he started staring at me. I really wanted to enjoy China Star but I am not feeling well after having lunch here. Possibly the food? Don't know but I won't return. The host/cashier greeted customers warmly which was an unexpected surprise given that the restaurant is sparse on atmosphere, outdated and there's no real service: my server brought water and cleared the table but seemed hesitant to communicate. Plus side: egg drop soup, plenty of wonton, fish with tasty tartar sauce, good chicken but now that my gut is queasy, all foods are suspect. ;-( read more

Haven't come across another Chinese food buffet like this one in AZ! Every dish I tried was great and they were constantly replacing dishes that ran out so you have access to the full selection at all times. The staff is also super nice and helpful. read more

As a chinese, I would recommend the buffet during your visit. The food quality is fine and the taste is authentic. And I did not taste any suspicious flavor or unfreshness. But drinks fee are enforced even though you does not want to drink any soft drinks. The meal will be a food comforter for your stomach during your trip. read more

I'm giving this 4* in its class. Really there's almost nothing in its class minus Golden Corral...which isn't currently accessible within at least 100+ miles. I've probably been to this location at least 3-4 times but It was my first time in 10+ years. Inside looked improved as much as I remember...and I think the selection was improved slightly. Better deserts and better quality main dishes food and probably more to my liking also...although beef broccoli is the same..leaving good taste but leaving me to wonder where's the beef? All I can say is I absolutely love this place! It is cheap, satisfies my taste buds, and my Stomach Munchers. Plus, drinks are included with your meal, which I have never seen for this type of Buffet. Not all the workers speak English, but the service is still really good. As for the Atmosphere, it all depends if you are surrounded by friendly people or not. Last time I visited this place I got seated by some rude people, but luckily they left well before I did. Let me summarize this review: never eat at China Star. Back before the Pandemic, it was a fairly reliable restaurant that served mediocre, mass-produced, relatively low-cost buffet food that children especially loved - the menu was static, unchanging, and predictable. Fast-forward to now and everything positive has slipped away to the backrooms of time. The food is expensive (more than $20.00 per person and especially for what it is). The interior of the restaurant is unbearably humid due to all the steam tables and this is ironic given that somehow, all of the food is much colder than the laws of thermodynamics would seem to allow (even dangerously so from a public health standpoint). The interior spaces have been remodeled...terribly...since the Pandemic - creating a harsh, black and white, zebra-reminiscent, off-putting ambiance that looks like it had a $500.00 budget from wish.com and was thrown-together in a single night. At first glance, the food LOOKS appetizing, but appearances can be deceiving! I would describe the food as "hard" (literally hard to chew), unusually bland, disappointing, lukewarm at best, with sauces that seemed half-thought-out and barely in the Chinese food genre. They serve a kind of sliceable pot roast, but offer no knives to guests (and this also kind of violates a rule of Chinese cooking - don't serve food you need to cut, because here you can't). This item in-particular was amusingly described by my party as "metamorphic meat" (It turned extremely hard and inedible, not unlike metamorphic rock). The only almost-good item was found in the salad bar: the chocolate pudding, mainly due to it being refreshingly cold, a welcome respite from the steamy-uncomfortable atmosphere and feelings of gastrointestinal distress. read more

I loved this place! Very family friendly and lots of food to choose from. There's Chinese food classics like teriyaki chicken, seafood, crab Rangoons, soup, fruit, and ice cream machine and more. I read a number of unhappy reviews and am wondering what happened. I've eaten there a number of times and the food was always fresh and often changes offerings while you are there. I have gone to other Chinese buffets and many have lots of trouble particularly keeping the vegetables fresh and not over cooked, and some dishes have been in the trays so long their identity becomes a mystery. I think that here they are able to successfully do this because they are busy throughout the day and the trays are constantly replaced. read more

This appears to be the larger of the two possible lunch Buffets in town. It is very close to the freeway if you're traveling through. This review is for the Friday Lunch Buffet and is based on reasonable expectations for an all you can eat $7.99 lunch buffet where they also offer a 10% senior discount. I cannot imagine finding a better "value". The only thing we personally find missing is a nice mixed vegetable dish with no meat. Only the bean sprouts and battered fried zucchini are available without meat! If you love meat you're in business here. And quite a few people were loving the shrimp and fish! They do also offer really nice fresh (not brown limp) LETTUCE! Not always easy to find at a Chinese Buffet. We usually pay closer to $10 for a buffet and usually there are a few more vegetarian options at that price, but we had no problem finding plenty to eat here, especially with the desserts! We're happily stuffed. In particular the Teriyaki Chicken is excellent as are the crisp flavorful bean sprouts. The sesame chicken is as good as expected! But the Teriyaki Chicken is AweSome. Mom was in the mood for eating buffet-style while we were up exploring Flagstaff, so I found this place on google maps and we rolled with it. Service was nice; a lady greeted us as we walked in and led us to a booth. Place was clean and not too crowded. Buffet was lit, and I got a lot of food that I enjoy- the only downside was that they didn't have any butterfly shrimp (a personal favorite) but still had a good filling meal!
