I used to like this place until tonight. A man was filling his plate at the buffet with a chihuahua, not a service dog, in his arms. The dog was literally drooling at the food. My supervisor was the one who first told me about this restaurant. I proceed to pull up a Yelp review right away & when I saw the relatively mixed reviews, I had concerns. The boss said no need to worry, its legit. Ok, I replied, me & the wife will give it a go. Turns out he was right. Since that time, we have been at China Super Buffet 11 times so I think I'm qualified to give a more honest insight on this business. Lets address all the negativity. A Chinese buffet is where you go to get your grub on. The food, compared to other Chinese buffets I've been to earns this place 5 stars. Is it the best table fare you will ever put into your mouth? No, this is not a trendy 5 star upscale eatery in the Gaslamp District. The food they do prepare however is good. Not spectacular but good. I can bite into a piece of orange chicken & have actually have meat inside unlike other places where there is mostly breading & little protein. I love seafood & they have all my favorites like fried shrimp, steamed peel & eat shrimp, coconut shrimp & snow crab legs. The have the usual Chinese fare but include some surprises like frog legs. They also have this really good dish by the salad bar which comprises of squid & diced peppers. Its spicy, tasty & refreshing. One of my favorites dishes for sure! The overall appearance & décor of the China Super Buffet is dated but again, me & the wife come here to gorge on good Chinese food. If I need the atmosphere, there are other places more suitable for special occasions. Unlike what others have reported, I have had ZERO problems with service here. The waitresses for the most part have been attentive & have taken care of our needs. Yes, they do speak English so don't believe what others have said. Every time I have visited the restaurant, cleanliness has been acceptable to good but the restrooms could use a little more attention sometimes. One downer for this place is that sometimes it sounds like a daycare center in here. Parents with kids in tow who are yelling & screaming the whole time makes for a less enjoyable time but that's not the restaurants fault. Why do parents bring infants to a restaurant anyway? Babysitters must be really expensive these days. A good time to hit this place is after work around 5pm during the weekdays in order to avoid the weekend crowds. Ok, so the final low down on China Super Buffet: good variety, good prices, & good food. You will have your tummy full, not get sick (unless you ate too much) & dinner for two will only set you back a budget friendly $31.62. Since we found this place, we quit dining at all the other crappy Chinese buffets we were going to before. I really like this buffet, they don't have the largest selection of food, but the food is pretty good considering it's a Chinese buffet.

I've been here a number of times before, but this time was VERY disappointing...and potentially dangerous! The food in the steam trays or whatever they are called (that keeps the food warm at a correct temperature) were keeping the food at room temperature. This is NOT good, and can cause any one of a number of stomach upsets as bacteria will grow on food "left out" at room temps or not at the correct temperature. Even accounting for the time it took me to serve myself and get back to my table, be seated, and put a morsel in my mouth, it was room temp. I ended up spitting things out, into my napkin. There was the same issue for the food that was supposed to be kept cold, like the fresh fruit and the sushi. Not even warm to the palate, these were at room temperature!!! Who is watching this? Apparently, no one. Also, one entire tray of sliced tuna and sliced salmon sushi was left out at room temperature--behind the sushi bar--for at least 40 minutes (I timed this myself!). I actually witnessed someone asking for the tuna and salmon since it could clearly be seen behind the sushi counter, and the manager hopped up, looked, and said something like "It's right here. It's ready" and went to find the sushi chef with no luck. He came out and said "It's ready" and put out that tray of sushi. It should have been more chilled...not even the rice upon which the tuna and salmon rested was chilled. Are they not putting out the more expensive stuff when trays are empty, figuring people will give up, thereby saving them some money from continually putting out specific items? (this is a practice at Tora in Mission Valley, too!!) We won't be going back for a good long while, if at all. read more

We made rsvps for 70 people and came an hour early and waited for the rest of the party to come. They gave us the ok after 30 minutes of waiting. They didn't know how to handle the large amount of people. They set up one long table in the middle of the room and wanted us to sit there. There was no gap in between and it was in the corner so it was hard to get in and out. So some of the people sat in the booths next to it and they seemed to be ok with it. After some of the people got their food sat down and ate. The manager didn't want some of the people sitting in the booths and made people get up with their food and sat them in the long table. The restaurant was empty and they didn't need to be so rude about it. After that, they sat random people in the table we moved out of just to make it look like they needed it. There were plenty of empty tables nearby and elsewhere. Workers are slow and confused at all times. Food was dry, seafood was very salty, actually most food was salty. Dumplings were cold, not even warm. Don't bother with the sushi. Chocolate fountain looks cool but didn't try it because I'm not sure if it's clean... Organization and set up was confusing. There were only a few signs that matched the food underneath. Don't bother eating here. Spend money elsewhere. If I could give this place a ZERO, I would.... read more

I have to say, this place rocks! For a self-service restaurant, this place has staffs that are friendly beyond my expectation. I always come here for crawfish, crab legs and frog legs and have never been let down. The food, despite being a little inconsistently good, is still decent for its price. I can taste the sweetness of the crab meat, the smell of crawfish every time I am here. All trays are frequently monitored (I suppose) and refilled just a couple minutes after being empty. It's never a pain to keep eating seafood, like I do. This has become my default place for buffet. My friends and I love going here! A little note on the side though: this place uses MSG heavily. If you eat frogs, you can literally see the MSG coating. The food, especially seafood, is tasty, but sometimes a little salty. read more

So this used to be the olde Soup Exchange. What a serious blast from the past, one that I dimly remember eating at when I was a kid. Luckily, Tasty Garden has refused to remove the tilework of its former occupant, so the memory remains. The large space makes TGB one of the more expansive of La Mesa's cheap chinese buffets; it has about as much buffet space as a Hometown, with three stations of traditional-ish chinese hot dishes, three soups, half a station with american grub (pizza, fried chicken, french fries), two or three cold counters (including basic sushi), and two more of fruit & dessert (in addition to that ubiquitous buffet soft serve). I tried about twenty items. I am assuming I visited during a fallow period in the tray-refresh cycle, as all the Panda Express-y wok-chicken goods were tough and a bit mushy. Some items were ok, though. The green beans, the california roll (at least as good as packaged take-out sushi), and the soup. Because it's very cheap ($8 for lunch) for the selection, I'd give them 1.5 stars, but round up for their killer app, which I failed to notice on my first trip through the stations. Like a breakfast buffet does omelets, they grill to order Mongolian bbq. The veggie selection was both thin and of suspect freshness, but they know their audience and there was a ton of protein: chicken, beef, shrimp, and tofu. You also get a choice of noodles, which is more than you get from most of the other mongol joints. Taken as competition to say, Great Khan, paying about the same amount and with pickings from the entire rest of the buffet thrown in as gravy, TGB has a future. It's not compelling enough for me to come back, but I can see the appeal. The service is efficient, decor is clean and airy, in a sort of faux feng shui makeover of Soup Exchange, plus outre "modern" lighting (for 1995 anyway). read more

We had a coupon, so what the hell let's check it out. It was better than fine, but nothing to wet your pants over. I tried my first ever frogs leg, that was novel! There was enough selection to be really happy about, but a lot of it looked a little boring to me. No crab in the rangoon. The dumplins were skinny. The sashimi was scary looking, but the sushi was adequate. The dessert selection was drab, but yum tapioca! It's worth going, I just have to knock two stars because of how gross a small selection of their stuff actually was. These are reasons to be glad it's a bottomless plate. Couple of things: 1. Most food dishes are not properly labeled. 2. Disorganized food setup. - Stir fry selection is far from where the cooking takes place (again not labeled), and please ignore that chinese lady who's got that mean stare with her hands on her hips who does the frying, because you mistakenly took the plate she made for other diners. 3. Most dishes are not warm. - Fried chicken were too hard and scrambled egg in the fried rice tastes funny (ruined my entire appetite). 4. Smelly carpet. 5. My in-laws are borderline obsessed with Chinese Buffets, so I wind up at one now and again. Their old standby is Yummy in Point Loma, but for recent birthday dinner we came to Super China. I must say, I was impressed. I loved the Mongolian bbq option! Instead of having to fill up on deep fried chicken and cream cheese wantons, I was able to eat a *tad bit* healthier. I skipped the meat and filled a big bowl full of veggies with some noodles and a shit ton of garlic. There was no line for the grill and was able to have it cooked up for me in moments. The buffet had many more random options like frog legs and a chocolate fountain. Service was friendly, though we had to flag down people for refills. Upon arrival we waited a while before being acknowledged, Then waited some more before being seated. Restaurant was not busy. The food was 6/10. You can tell when certain items hav been sitting there, and when some are fresh. Service was bad , waited for ever on refills and for a clean up. On top of that the lady who brought the check , flipped out when we did not tip her . Making a scene , after the expletive she not any one else at this establishment deserve a tip. Came in today for one last effort with this place. We arrived at exactly 11am on a Sunday. A lot of the food is covered in greasy neon melted cheese. But the stir fry looked okay so I decided to focus on that.... Eh. I was still disappointed, but worse, the stir fry chef was all scowls and glares. Like I just shat in her salad for wanting to eat something that wasn't sitting in oil. I also didn't see any of the "special" options that are supposed to justify the higher price on Sundays. you can't beat the price,plus the dining environment is nice and clean.Chinese buffet w/seafood usually costs$15 they only charge $8.29 here, and kids under 3eat free! they have nice salad bar with salad in both Chinese and American style.sushi bar and Mongolia barbecue are great too, but I like their beef broccoli and bean sprout best. There's no buffet that I've really experienced to be "GREAT" so this is on my list as alright. I can't say I've tried better but, for the Sunday dinner price, it's affordable. They do have a variety of Chinese and America food, so it's fulfilling when you're get there on an empty stomach. It wasn't to crowed when we got there but all of a sudden every family showed up which made it near impossible to get back to our table with the tables being literally an elbow from another party. I would still return as their variety of food is better then some buffets I've been to. read more

I have gone here twice now. Both visits left with a full stomach and fun memories. My first visit I had frog legs for the first time in my life and even though I wont again those were well cooked and excellent tasting legs. Just like chicken. The place is colorful and inviting. They have a large variety of choices of food. They have the full buffet always stocked with fresh food. They have a Mongolian grill, salad bar, and a chocolate fountain. A variety of vegetables and seafood. Fresh and authentic tasting. The place is clean, the staff there are very polite and has a large screen TV in one of the seating areas. This place is great for groups, large comfortable seating with an all around great atmosphere. I will continue to come here and I highly recommend that people try this place if your interested in good Chinese cuisine for a bulk price. read more

I'm Asian; hence, I've been eating more Chinese and Oriental food than most people. After reading the reviews from this page, I decide to take my friend to try out this buffet restaurant. Unlike the reviews, I am embarrassed to have taken my friend into such a restaurant. ALL THE DISHES TASTE REALLY BAD!!! The only thing that I enjoy there was just the Ice-cream that's up to standard. Everything else is either nasty or tasteless. We were charge like $11 per person. With that price, you can go to East BUFFet on Miramar RD and get 4 more times the selection and way better food! BUTTERED. WINGS. The only reason I always come back here is the chicken wings. They use butter with their sauce which makes them amazing even though its a tad bit unhealthy. Its a must have. Their jalapeño chicken and bbq pork is really good too. They also have some bomb ass vanilla pudding that if mixed with bananas and almond cookies, it becomes a top 5 dessert. Went here on Saturday at 12:30, a party of three, very busy but were seated quickly. Other reviewers complained about the service; our waitress spoke limited English, but was smiling and friendly, cleared the empty plates often. The food was hot and fresh, tasty, plentiful, almost too many choices. One of us did get Broccoli Beef, the beef was tough. Other than that, everything was fine. If I could give less. I would. The hours are until 9:30, but the staff works until 8pm. Crab legs were NOT refilled and the chance of stocking ANYTHING low is a joke. A gentleman asking what they were eating and being polite, was met with laughs and giggles to his face with no translation. He was only trying to be nice and the staff laughed and snared at him for no good reason.
