My family has been to the restaurant very frequently during the past 18 years and we love authentic Chinese food. We just learned that the restaurant has a new owner now who has been involved in the business for many years. The new owner has told us recently that they are making a lot of improvements to the business, including replacing old furniture, implementing a new business model that will focus on quality control and enhancing efficiency, and developing new dishes to meet customer demands. Service was great but overall, the food was not anything to write home about. I was hoping for something like the authentic Chinese food that I usually buy in Virginia where you dine in and everything is bustling with fragrant aromas of Asian cuisine but it was not. We walked in and I was immediately impressed by how clean their dining area was. One of the cleanest I've seen. When we ordered, we got our drinks right away. I did order hot tea and had to remind the lovely lady about it before I received it. Our food came a few minutes after but not before experiencing loud arguing in mandarin or cantonese resonating from the back of the house. The waitress had to come by and apologize for the noise. We ordered sweet and sour chicken, general tsaos chicken, egg flour soup and shrimp fried rice. The soup was what arrived first. It was spicy and not at all anything that I remembered as egg flour soup [or egg drop soup in the east coast]. It had carrots and cabbage in it. Usually, I'm used to just the soup having just egg...maybe some corn in it and being full of flavor. This soup was spicy and bland. The shrimp fried rice arrived next. My husband enjoyed that it had a lot of egg in it and the overall eggy flavor but as far as the rice itself, that's all it was. A faint egg flavor despite its color. It didn't taste like anything else and very bland as well. :( My husband's sweet and sour chicken was a winner. I tasted it and it was on point. However, the general tsaos chicken was inedible in the beginning. I put some on my son's plate and I tasted it. It was overly crunchy and I almost couldn't bite into it. A few pieces were like that while the others were reminiscent of alright I guess. I had to take it off of my son's plate and replace it with the sweet and sour chicken. I beg of you- do not do the buffet. Order off the 'other' Chinese menu and taste what they do best. Eggplant, Lazi Chicken, Spicy Pork, tofu and veggies in garlic sauce are solid. Owner is Taiwanese and apparently set up a deal whereby the crews of the China Airlines flights are bussed in for meals and order off of the Chinese language menu. I should say that the Mongolian beef and cream cheese wontons are gooood. The ambience is 70's strip-mall, so take it to go. Definitely worth the drive to Gov't Hill. read more

China Town & Rice Bowl are probably the only two Chinese restaurants that serve authentic Chinese food. China town has great prices on their lunch specials. Food was very delicious! Even President Xi ordered the food of this restaurant when he visited Alaska. Very typical Chinese food, true Chinese taste. Besides, the decoration was also typical Chinese. If you really want to have true Chinese cuisine in Anchorage, this is your first choice. I used to always order Chinese food from here for delivery but recently I called and they no longer offer delivery. I am very upset as I have not found any other place that has the specific taste I am looking for in Chinese food. For those of you looking if this is a good restaurant right now on Yelp, all I know is the food is good. Authentic Chinese cuisine. Better than anything I've had in southern California. Service was prompt, polite, and amazingly accommodating. Looks like their Americanized dishes are tasty as well but didn't try many except walnut shrimp/prawn which was amazing. Crispy, sweet and savory. Delicious. I've had way better Chinese food in different parts of the country, here in the Anchorage area, and in England. The beef we ordered was gummy and soggy. I liked the heat from the Hunan beef, but that was about it. You can get better Mongolian beef from other places, like Suhsi Yako. The sweet and sour chicken was basically chicken nuggets with a drizzle of sweet and sour sauce on top, plus a little cup of extra sauce. Even my toddler wouldn't touch the nuggets and she loves chicken nuggets. The rice was mushy and overcooked. The only good part of the meal was the Chinese doughnuts for dessert. We tried this place because we got a menu in the mail, but I will never eat here again. read more

The first thing you start to notice when you're living in Anchorage is the paucity of authentic Chinese cuisine. There's a lot of white-people Chinese food, mostly run by Koreans. I have nothing against white people or Koreans, as long as neither is in any way responsible for the Chinese food I order. Up until now, it seemed that I would simply need to resign myself to this sorry state of affairs. The few Chinese people living in Anchorage I met agreed, saying they rarely ate out, and no one really had anything to tell me. And then, I heard about China Town Restaurant. I'd heard a few people say, in a general way, that there was a place that was ok up in Government Hill, but as it was a bit out of the way I didn't really explore. Finally, a wife of a coworker who happens to be Shanghainese told me about this place. Normally I wouldn't trust a Shanghainese person's taste in food any further than I could throw it (ahem) but I was frankly getting pretty desperate. So I took the drive out. Boy am I glad I did, but at first I was unsure. The place was pretty spartan, which was a good sign. Only forks out on the tables -- hm, that's worrisome. The lady who seated my girlfriend and me was obviously not American, but she didn't address us in Chinese. The menu on the table was completely in English, with a "Korean food" section in Hangul and Japanese -- no Chinese in sight. I was beginning to think I'd been led astray. Then an old man walked in, and the lady who sat us started speaking to him extremely fast in Dongbei dialect. Turns out she's from Liaoning. My jaw nearly dropped open two feet, it had been such a long time since I heard Mandarin that sounded the way it's supposed to. When she came over to take our order I addressed her in Mandarin, and suddenly I knew that everything would be ok. I asked her what was good. She recommended Yuxiangqiezi, a favorite of mine. We ordered that and also a Sichuan hot pork soup, another recommendation. We were not disappointed. It was awesome. I seriously stuffed myself silly, I was almost in tears. It was late in the day and the whole kitchen was out in their aprons, eating noodles and shooting the shit in Chinese. Mainlanders, all of them, but by their accents of scattered origin, all huddled together in the frozen north bringing those of us that left our hearts and stomachs in China a little bit closer to happiness. I'll warn those of you that don't speak Chinese, I haven't any idea if what's on the menu is good or authentic. My suspicion is that Chinese-speakers have an advantage when it comes to selection, which is trivially true in any Chinese restaurant. But if you do happen to be Chinese, and you need some of the food your mama made you, this is the place. This is the only place. Don't listen to the white people who tell you to go to Charlie's Bakery for dim sum, or the folks that say "Sesame chicken at New Sagaya is pretty good for my money." Those people don't know what Chinese food is supposed to taste like, and while they're just trying to be helpful, you'll end up with either a badly microwaved frozen baozi or a cornstarchy-syrupy-sweet mess that not even Panda Express or Mr. Chau would have the audacity to call Chinese food. Suddenly, Anchorage just became an order of magnitude more livable. Now if only they had Chou doufu... read more

First. I cannot believe the cost of this place. It was 80$ for our dinner and my kids couldn't stomach it. They wouldn't eat the dumplings nor the honey sesame chicken. The food was soggy, not crispy at all, like it was made a day before. My husband got the hunan beef with sweet and sour chicken and ate maybe a quarter of it and trashed it. The hot and sour soup was not at all sour like normal tangy hot and sour. I had to add vinegar to it to make it passible. And to add, it took over an hour to get to us. DISSATISFIED DISAPPOINTED and will NEVER ORDER FROM THEM AGAIN. also. Our stomachs are starting to hurt as I write this. Disgusted! I've lived in Alaska almost 3 years now and had Chinese Food everywhere that was mediocre at best and some that were just plain horrible (How How and Golden Pond were the worst and now closed, thank God!). This place, despite being located in an ancient strip mall outside the Government Hill gate of Elmendorf AFB is wonderful. Food is all made very fresh and a lot of TLC, not drenched in sugar-laden syrups or gobs of soy sauce. I had beef and broccoli cooked just right, not all saucy, plus sweet and sour chicken lightly breaded and egg roll made from rice paper instead of that doughy crap. Fried rice had bits of red pork and their Korean kimchi was very good too, made with red pepper paste. And yes, it is old and not impressively decorated, but somehow the atmosphere works with "hole in a wall" character. Final note: we live in Eagle River and it's worth the commute. read more

I work SO close to here, it was inevitable that I'd come here. It's a simple restaurant; tables, booths and a couple decorations added as an afterthought. You don't come here to entertain, you come here to get a hearty portion of Chinese food. Ordered the honey sesame chicken which was pretty good, though I should've asked for extra veggies. The amount of chicken was enough for 2 meals, and at under $10 a plate, that's a good deal. Seems like a lot of the Elmendorf folks eat here for a quick lunch, as it's right outside the gates. read more

Oh my goodness I love this place. They have two menus here - one in Chinese for people who are Chinese and regulars, and an Americanized Chinese food menu. All the food on both menus are good, and the special Chinese dishes can be found on the "everybody" menu. Most of them. Just ask for the "Chinese menu" and then ask for recommendations. I'm addicted to the spicy eggplant with pork and the pineapple chicken. I also love the crab cheese won tons and a shrimp dish - it's sweet. Walnut shrimp! Yum yum yum. They deliver downtown, but be patient, it's worth the wait. Family restaurant, really awesome family that runs this place. I also am a sucker for their lunch buffet, cause it's inexpensive and fresh. SO GOOD! I love this place! The best fried rice I found in Anchorage. My favorite is the large Honey Sesame Chicken, small Fried Rice (with or with out shrimp), and an order of Fried Doughnuts. Sure the place look a little on the shabby side outside but no complaints on the inside. And they deliver if your order is over a certain amount, which I think is $15. The only complaint I have about this place is the amount of time it takes for the food to be delivered. Between 45 mins to an hour. But it is Anchorage and most deliveries take that long and the food is always delivered hot. And they have a very cheap buffet which is good, small but good. read more

I thought this place was really good, particularly when you consider it's Anchorage (a veritable wasteland for good Chinese food). On top of that, we did the lunch buffet and I don't know of anywhere in Anchorage where you can eat a good buffet for $8.50. This is my first time eating here so I don't know if it changes but the buffet contained (from memory): Hot and Sour Soup Won Ton Soup Crab and Cream Cheese Won Tons Egg Rolls Pan Fried Gyoza Chinese Donuts Orange Chicken Sesame Chicken General Tsu's Chicken Mongolian Beef Sweet and Sour Pork Some sort of vegetarian stir fry - Sorry, can't remember exactly what it was Vegetable Lo Mein Fried Rice White Rice I might be forgetting a dish or two...it seems like there might have been another chicken dish. We got there at 11:30 am and were there about an hour. While we were there, they were constantly bringing out small batches of fresh food and everything was fresh and newly cooked the entire time we were there. None of the dishes were what I would call outstanding, but everything was fresh and flavorful and it was certainly worth the $8.50. The Mongolian Beef was probably my favorite, followed by the Lo Mein and Orange Chicken. The Sesame Chicken was a bit soggy -- even when they had just brought it out -- but I find that to be pretty common with that particular dish everywhere. I was fairly surprised at the amount of cream cheese in the Won Tons. The gyoza wasn't spectacular and the egg rolls could have come from any frozen food section but both were plentiful, fresh and filling. The fried rice was OK but the white rice was a sticky, gluey mess. The hot and sour soup was really bland and not nearly as spicy as I've had other places. It's sort of a hole in the wall joint but it appeared clean and the servers were fast and friendly -- altho they did not appear to speak much English -- but that was never a problem. I would definately try it again, despite all the comments from people in my office about the location. read more

Got some food to take back to our hotel nearby after a long day in Seward. The food was delicious and generously portioned. As others have mentioned, the pricing is very reasonable, compared to other restaurants in Anchorage. Next time I'm back, I'm definitely asking for the Chinese menu. Staff was very helpful and friendly. Decor, what's to say ... chinese restaurants are not known for their decor. I'll definately be back next time I'm in town. I think I have a very high standard for Chinese food, especially here in the Pacific Rim. Unfortunately, most in Anchorage disappoint. The food is tailored for American taste buds and is not authentic. China Town has been the only one to offer authentic dishes. Order from the "Chinese" menu not the regular menu. My favorites are the steamed black cod, steamed mussels, "chopped" fried chicken, and bok choy with garlic sauce. I've finally found a slice of Hong Kong and Beijing in Alaska. read more

I don't get it. This place got amazing reviews, and we ordered from the Chinese menu just like we were supposed to. But... and I hesitate to say this, because the service was friendly and attentive, and we received fried rice on the house... The food was really unforgivably bad. Almost every dish was swimming in oil, and worse, the dishes were just bland and flavorless. An extreme shock after reading all the 5 star reviews. The only explanation I can think of is that our entire party of three is white. So maybe they ignored the fact that I'd requested the Chinese menu and just gave us the awful "Americanized" version of their food that received a 1-star review elsewhere. But... that really sucks. Birthday Party Gone Awry For my thirtieth birthday, my family scheduled a dinner at China Town Restaurant. I have never had a Peking duck dinner and had always imagined it would be a perfect way to celebrate a momentous birthday with my family and friends. Two days before, we called and confirmed our reservation for Saturday and grew even more excited for the upcoming dinner. My birthday arrived (along with family and friends from around southcentral Alaska and as far away as Illinois) and we were all very excited as we made our way to China Town for our reservation. As we walked in, the staff stood up from what appeared to be their dinner, and directed us to sit wherever we'd like. A little bit confused, we referenced our reservation and that we had pre-ordered the Peking duck meal for our fairly large party. The manager and/or owner replied matter-of-factly, "That's on Monday." We explained that it was actually this evening, and that we had even called to ensure they would be ready for us two days prior. This time the reply was, "You can all order something from the regular menu." I'm still not certain whether they simply didn't want to prepare it and thought we'd shrug it off or actually made a mistake. Maybe the Chinese calendar has my birthday on the 19th..... They all looked on longingly as we filed the entire group out the door. Saturday night at 7:00 pm is not the time to schedule a large dinner in Anchorage, but after much calling around, local staple, Pancho's Villa (a favorite of mine) was able to accommodate us and we all had a wonderful time with perfect service. I have heard of China Town catering weddings and events, but I couldn't possibly recommend this restaurant for any planned event. Moral? The food may be authentic (I'll never know), but China Town received a zero before we even sat down. read more

Food was okay. I'm from Los Angeles and there is really great Chinese food in LA so my review is based on my experience. I had the house fried rice which wasn't very flavorful. My uncle had the fried noodles which he thought was okay. Unfortunately, we had an unpleasant experience with a waitress who was rude to us and said in Chinese that we were obstructive when we were waiting for our take out. Then, after we sat down to wait for our food, she took away the napkin and spoon that my daughter was playing with. I told the owner about the experience who apologized. read more

If I could I would give them a zero. I called and placed my family's order at 5:33 pm. After a long day my husband and I really did not want to cook and wanted to order something to get here at a fairly decent time. At 6:44 pm after our meal still had not arrived I called and was told the driver was on their way. At 7:13 pm the driver showed up with our food that we ordered an HOUR and 40 minutes earlier. We told them we was not paying that price for food that took this long to deliver to a place that is 12 mins away. Our first time ordering from them and it will be our last.
