This was our first time ordering from Chinese West Express. I was very impressed by how fast our food got here, it was hot and they included utensils, soy sauce, and chili paste sauce. The packaging was really nice too. We ordered a small orange chicken, medium beef and broccoli, veggie egg rolls, and steamed rice. The orange chicken was pretty tasty, the sauce was pretty good, but the beef and broccoli was not good at all, the meat was very chewy, super oily, and it had a fishy taste, it ruined the entire meal for us. Overall I was very disappointed . Our food was $31.75, with a $5 dollar tip. So total was $36.75. Way too much for the quality we received. I would not order again, it's wasn't worth it. read more

My husband and I love this spot. Reasonable delivery charge. The food has good flavor and it is always hot!! I love the House Chow mein and my husband loves the Kung pao. I don't know what happened to the business, but recently, when I ordered the usual, there was practically no protein in my dish - it was mainly vegetables. I called to report the problem, and they kindly offered a credit on my next order. When I placed another order, advising them of my credit they told me that they were aware of the credit. I placed the exact same order and picked up the food. Everything seemed fine, but then a few hours later I had an upset stomach. I practice intermittent fasting, so I didn't have breakfast or lunch and can of course, only pin point the problem to the food from this establment. This is my first time trying this place. It's our anniversary and we love Chinese food in bed, (a long tradition for us) and we used "Grubhub" to deliver it. Our meals were delivered on time and piping hot. The Orange Chicken had large chucks of moist chicken breast and tasted great. The Sweet and Sour Pork was excellent. As were the fried rice and Egg Rolls. They included plastic ware, fortune cookies and napkins. They met all of our expectations and more. My only small desire that wasn't met was Chinese mustard packages. I love to feel the fire in my nose! Next time I will ask for it, maybe it's my fault for not asking. The specials offers a choice of hot & sour or egg flower soup; steam or fried rice, and includes an eggroll. I selected: Garlic Chicken - $6.25 My to go order included the spicy garlic chicken sauteed with zucchini, carrots, bell peppers, hot and sour soup, steam rice, and an eggroll. * Hot & Sour Soup - Delivered still pretty warm and was "ok". * Garlic Chicken - Slices of chicken breast and veges were fresh, tasty, and abundant. * Eggroll - Rubbery and not good. * Steam Rice - Fresh My work associate ordered the orange chicken with fried rice and egg flower soup. Crushing disappointment! My office in Tustin has been placing large orders with China West Express for years now, twice a month, sometimes more. We love the food, especially the Kung Pao Chicken! But the past 6 months has seen a change for the worse. First they raised the delivery cost from $2 to $3. Fine, we can live with that- inflation and gas prices. OK. But then they raised the prices on many menu items- food that was already pushing the limits on price. But we all felt that the food was worth it. We just ordered less often. Then they shrunk the portion size by switching to new containers. So now we had a price hike AND smaller portions! We decided we had to give them up. Just not worth it anymore. Fast forward a couple months to today. We all just couldn't resist the craving any longer and decided to splurge. Our food arrived and all of us were shocked to see the portions had shrunk yet again!! I ordered the large Kung Pao Chicken for $10.99, and this new container is at least a third smaller than the previously shrunk down one. It was like a small order! Co-workers who ordered the lunch specials discovered the entree now rested in the small side of the container and the rice occupied the large side- a reversal from what they previously had done. So now the meal was like a child's menu size. All of us are completely disgusted and fed up. Raising prices to compensate for inflation or whatever is one thing, but to raise the price AND reduce the portions TWICE in 6 months is just greed! So they once had a loyal group of customers who consistently gave them $50+ two to three times per month, and now they'll not get any of our business again. Bad food day! Got deceivers food came quick and hot, however the house rice was disgusting! Not only was it super mushy but When I say absolutely no flavor I was pretty disappointed! It's in the 50s and windy and we're all acting like it's the great storm. OK I too am a cold weather wimp. When i feel like that, I want some soup especially if I am no't too hungry. So, I opted for Won Ton soup to go. When I walked in, it brought me back to my youth when I would go with my mom to Oakland Chinatown to buy veggies and fresh fish. Because I tolerated shopping with her and carried all the stuff to the car, she'd treat me to one of the hole in the wall restaurants. CWE has that kind of feel, with the cooking areas well exposed so you can see your food being cooked in the giant fiery wok. Everytime they'd splash oil, fire would jump. Make me think pyromaniacs would love to see this fire display. I took my soup home. It's probably enough to feed 2-3. It was pretty good, but I was hoping for more pieces of pork filled won tons. My general rule is, there should be 2-4 won tons per person. After all, I ordered won ton soup - the main ingredient should be the soup name. Since this was about $9, I expected more than the four pieces. There was ample amount of chinese peas, carrots, and cabbage But again I didn't order Chinese vegetable soup or war won ton.. There were also four large pieces of shrimp (which I'd trade for won ton next time) and slices of chicken. Personally, I would have liked a few pieces of barbecue pork to add some sweetness and texture. So out of the 50 or so places I've had Won Ton Soup in the last five years, they're probably in the middle tier for value and taste for the money. Good, not great. Server was "LU" Just ordered delivery with the sauce spilt everywhere. Called management and they just blamed the delivery guy who didn't even seem to notice the spill. He just handed the bag over as if nothing was wrong with it and tried to brush it off. Upset because we ordered food that is now messy, dirty, ruined - management did not even apologize or offer anything. The restaurant kept our money and delivered food that was spilt and damaged with sauce. I don't know what to say about a business that runs this way, but the least I can do is warn fellow yelpers and avoid ever coming back here or same management ever again. China west has the most amazing and delicious noodles (those are my favorite). The entire menu is very yummy. It is a very small hole in the wall type place. The only thing that could be better is the seating and space but that's just the size of the place and they can't do much about it. I ate one piece and couldn't even get it down since it was so chewy/rubbery/disgusting that I spit it out. Wtf kind of beef is this?! McD's beef quality was better than that.. "Fried" tofu was soggy, sick and "slimy." The "sauteed" spinach lacked any flavor, was boiled vs. sauteed and I could taste sand particles from improper washing. The ONLY thing that was somewhat palatable was the chow mein but how can you possibly screw that up? Even the RICE was poorly cooked - there were bits of uncooked rice that felt like little rocks when I chewed it. DISGUSTING. How long does it take a 2 liter soda to become sweaty and almost room temperature? Well that's how long my soda and food must have been sitting around because... My soda was sweating like it had just ran a marathon in 102 degree weather. Long story short: no. I will not be ordering from this establishment again. For $32.03, i'm sure I can find something more appetizing. FYI: Got a text from owner apologizing for the horrible food I received. Stating its made fresh to order and it was hot when it left the restaurant. That's all well and good; however, it was cold and soggy and my soda was warm and sweaty when it reached my home. Let me start off by saying, I haven't written a review for a restaurant, or any establishment, in quite some time. And more recently I feel that to give a restaurant a bad review during this trying time would be like kicking someone when they're down. But after taking my beautiful wife's advice of reading some other reviews of this place and feeling that said beautiful wife could have made a much better, tastier and less expensive meal at home, I'm compelled to leave a most unflattering review. So I noticed in another review that this isn't some hole in the wall place. Well they're wrong. It literally is some hole in the wall place. Sandwiched between a Mexican hole in the wall place an ice cream hole in the wall place in a strip mall of other hole in the wall places. It's small and I can't imagine there being seating for more than 25 people if that. Now keep in mind I haven't had any kind of Chinese food, good or bad, outside of the home made "stir fry" and steam rice my wife made last night, in over 2 months!! So my senses were a bit off. Red flags that would have been spotted right away were not. Like no smell of delicious food being made or a line or several people waiting for their order or the flies. And most importantly, I didn't check Yelp! I read a couple of reviews on Google and saw a 4.2 rating and decided to go for it. Mistake. Big mistake. So what did I order? Dumplings. I was asked, fried or steamed. Fried was my choice (Remember that for later). Fried salt and pepper calamari. I was asked, spicy or not. I chose not. This my be the only correct/factual part of this entire order other than it being "to go" but that's a gimme under these current circumstances. BBQ pork with snow peas. A classic go to for me.....yeah. Garlic noodles with chicken. Again a safe bet. And finally, House Special Beef Steak. Special in a different way. So that's what I ordered. Will that be what I get? Let's read some more and find out.... So I order at the location and was told 10 to 15 minutes. 9 minutes later it was done. All packed and hot! With a faint aroma coming from the bag. How much for this feast? 63 bucks! Not counting tip. At this point I think Instacart might be onto something with that whole changing/canceling the tip thing. Anyway, yeah over 70 bucks. Now we're home, about 6 minutes from the restaurant. Start opening containers and it's at this point that it all starts to click. One container after another. Remember those "fried" dumplings? They were steamed and then light sauteed on one side. Then tossed into a container where they became one big soggy dumpling. They ripped apart as we tried to serve them. Fried. Sure. Then came the "fried" salt and pepper calamari. Maybe fried means something else in Chinese?? Because these were not fried or crispy or whatever, they were wet and buried in diced onions and celery. They was maybe 5 or 6 rings and a container of vegetables. Which brings me to my next dish. BBQ Pork with snow peas or should I say, Snow Peas with BBQ pork. Much like the calamari, this dish was wet and mostly snow peas. The BBQ pork itself, when you found it, was no prize either. For something so covered in moisture it was extremely dry and this next phrase is basically the key phrase for this entire meal, which still has two more dishes to come, bland and tasteless. Very blah. Garlic noodles with chicken. These noodles were unusually thick like udon noodles and covered in a sauce that contained garlic seasoning. And weird pieces of chicken. It was so, so. And last but not least, and I truly mean that because of all the dishes it was the most plentiful. Full of beef chunks and bell peppers, mushrooms, onions and a very thick gravy. This would have been the highlight. The piece de resistance! The savior of the entire meal!! If only it had flavor...wah-wah-waaaaahhhh Yeah everything lacked flavor. I appreciate that none of the food was salty but it also lacked any other conventional spices. Maybe a dash of pepper here and there but that's it. I've had Chinese food from coast to coast and places in between. This is by far the worst of them all. That includes a place in Alabama. I would have had a much more satisfying meal up the street from the Hong Kong Express fast food to go for about a quarter of the price. On a high note, my wife said she would definitely go back for the canned Coke. It was cold and delicious. Also, plenty of condiments and napkins. So there you have it. This place sucks. Never again. They're so friendly and always accommodating. I came to this place with a weird pregnancy craving. For some reason I wanted to have egg foo young with orange chicken's sauce instead of their regular gravy. The nice lady allowed me to have that!!! I was sooo happy and thrilled cause I've been visiting some "authentic" Chinese restaurants for almost a week timeline and they all turned me down. This place doesn't look like they get many walk-in/sit-down customers since their few seating areas are actually used for storage, maybe I came at stocking time.
