Initially opted to try this place since it's small and seemed like they would have better service as opposed to the bigger dim sum place where it sometimes feels impossible to get a staff member's attention to order. Parking is plentiful at the garage nearby and required a short walk to the restaurant. Inside were only a few tables and one set of customers. We order to go: chow mein, shrimp dumplings, cucumber salad, and a few other items. I was surprised when the total was about $70ish. When we asked for things like chili oil or hot mustard, they said no, they don't have any. The food itself was lackluster and disappointing, especially for the price point. Nothing was truly bad but none of the dim sum dishes hit nicely. I've never had a dim sum meal that left me feeling wanting more before. A friend recommended this small hole-in-the-wall dumpling spot, and we were excited to try it, especially after seeing the colorful dumplings on the menu. When we arrived, the place was completely empty except for the owner and staff having their lunch break, which made the visit feel a bit unusual. I called to place an order the man who answered sounded annoyed right away. When I asked him to read back my order he audibly sighed on the phone when I mentioned that he missed an item. The cucumber salad was soooo flavorful with garlic! All dumplings were juicy and burst rich in flavor at the bite. Since I was by myself, I chose to sit at the bigger table. I didn't have to wait long for my food which was VERY good, but a little pricey compared to Chinatown. Many dim sum to choose from, but decided to try something new. The chives pocket was VERY good if you like chives with glass noodles. I decided to order my go to dim sum which was the har gow (shrimp). It was good, but the size of the dim sum itself was much smaller compared to the size I can get in Chinatown. As for the hot tea, it tasted the usual way, but I prefer my hot tea to actually be in the little china pot. Would I go back? I have been craving Shanghainese food so found this place via Yelp. This is a mom/pop place, not too big of restaurant but they make their dumplings, bao, pastries, and etc. in-house. 1. Sheng-jian-bao/ pan fried buns: Dough is fluffy and thr meat is tasty. 3. Shanghainese tamale/ sticky rice and pork: This is a very authentic Shanghainese food. I love the taste and bought extras (frozen) to take home. 4. Meat pie (aka xian-rou yue-bing in chinese): Usually available during Moon Festival time. Love the crust, especially when out of oven. 5. Fried Shanghainese egg rolls: OMG, so crispy and tasty. Must dit into vinegar to get that extra...yumminess. 6. Shanghainese pork and shepherd's purse wonton: A traditional Shanghainese dish. The soup is simple but paired well with the wonton. Overall, a very nice hole-in-the-wall mom and pop place. It is recommended that you call in advance to make sure the restaurant is opened and it has what you want to eat/order (since much of its dumplings, pastries, buns/baos and etc are made fresh in house). Dim Sum World is an authentic amazing, dim sum place that is not only more affordable but BETTER than Din Tai Fung! Despite negative reviews almost swaying my family away from this awesome restaurant. Everything at Dim Sum World is homemade and I am elated that I got to try many of their dumpling and bao dishes such as the Juice pork dumplings, everything dumplings (Not on the menu, have to specially ask and order), salted egg custard bun, Sticky rice and Pork siu mai, Pan Fried Juicy Bun, Chives Pork Dumplings, Sticky Rice and Pork, and Sticky Rice and Red Bean! First off, their juicy pork dumplings have the perfect thickness of skin, I could drop the dumplings from a small height and it would still keep it's warm, umami, savory, soup inside, every dumpling was wrapped with consideration. For the Everything Dumplings, it would include the juicy pork, mala pork, squid ink, chicken, vegetable, and beef dumplings. The mala pork dumplings had a slight spiciness and extra savoriness while including all the qualities of the juicy pork dumplings. The squid ink dumpling has a first hit taste of a steamed mushroom (definitely truffle) and the squid ink skin added a umaminess and savoriness of the ocean. The chicken dumpling was alright, I feel like you would be better off with the juicy pork dumplings as it is just that but with chicken meat instead (Good if you prefer chicken!) Beef dumplings... well... because I cannot eat beef here is a message from my dad "normal and tasty" . Last but actually first (in the dumpling ranking) The vegetable dumpling! It surprised me the most, having a filling of Shiitake mushroom, cabbage and chives? Whatever it was, enveloped in a matcha tasting skin it produced a complex mushroom umami, almost like the pork dumplings only reminding you that it was flavor solely from vegetables with a gentle leafy after taste. The vegetable dumplings was definitely the most unique and innovative dumplings I tried in those everything dumplings! The salted egg custard bun was cute! It was served sprinkled with coconut flakes and masquerading as a rabbit bao, this rabbit bao had delicious creamy insides, its 流沙 (Salted egg custard) was Hong Kong standard! The instant hit of sweet salted egg yolk and having a smooth yet slightest grain texture, this is the best salted egg yolk I have ever ate, the bun to filling ratio could be improved (a bit doughy) but definitely does not take away the baos greatness. The sticky rice pork siu mai is like if a Sticky Rice and Pork (粽子) planted a sapling, while Juicy Pork Dumpling watered the sapling and Siu Mai provided it with a blanket, because those are the exact qualities those components provided, first a base using savory sticky rice, then a reservoir of warm, umami, oleogus soup, and a thin chewy coat of the Siu Mai, really interesting dim sum dish. The sticky rice and Pork reminded me of my grandma's cooking, it has a decently strong taste of dark soy sauce and fatty pork belly inside. The red bean sticky rice was not too sweet, sticky, and like a good dessert, I would just say that the red bean was pretty dry (If it can be incapsulated in the glutinous rice I think the red bean will have a much more moist and smooth texture) And lastly! The chives pork dumplings were really light, acting more like a pallet starter getting you ready for all the other delicious dim sum (Basically it was just alright, juicy but not as much taste). I apologize for this EXTREMELY detailed review but I was really passionate about this one as I really disliked the fact that I almost was not able to enjoy this food due to negative reviews, every restaurant in the world has negative reviews even the best ones so I believe I should always write the best and most positive reviews in order to combat that, some negative reviews are valid, but I know someone else will write that for me.
