Kim Kee Noodle House is one of those places: old-school, no-frills, and focused on Chiu Chow/Teochew-style noodle soups rather than atmosphere. The menu offers a good selection of noodle types, including round egg noodles, thin and thick egg noodles, rice vermicelli, rice noodles, and pho noodles, so there is plenty of room to customize your bowl. I ordered the #1 noodle soup. Since the description didn't make it obvious that fish balls were included, I also ordered a separate fish-ball soup. Then the #1 arrived with plenty of fish balls already swimming around inside. So I briefly became the regional distributor for fish balls. A minor first-world problem. The main bowl was very satisfying: a clear, clean-tasting broth with shrimp, fish balls, meat and other toppings, served piping hot. The separate fish-ball soup was simple and good as well. The complimentary bean sprouts and green onions were fresh, and the pickled green chilies on the table were excellent. If you like heat, add them--they give the broth a sharp, bright punch without overwhelming it. Service was modest, direct and extremely fast. Food seemed to appear almost immediately after ordering. No unnecessary ceremony, which I appreciate. Background pop music was audible without being intrusive. The restaurant itself feels older and somewhat dusty, but the food tasted fresh and clean. The one persistent fly apparently had been appointed assistant manager and repeatedly checked on our table without being asked. Annoying, but survivable. There is also a 3% credit-card surcharge, which I find irritating. Just build it into the price. Finally, the restroom deserves one brief anthropological observation: the wall sign carefully illustrates that customers should sit on the toilet normally rather than squat on top of it or somehow stand beside it while conducting business. I entered needing a restroom and left having received a short course in human civilization. Despite the fly, the surcharge and the aging interior, this was a satisfying meal. The flavors reminded me strongly of the Chiu Chow-style noodle soups I've had in Hong Kong. 4/5.
