I love the food here. Here are the cons: the parking lot is tiny, it seems a little shady, could be a touch cleaner, and there is always a huge line out of the door. However that line is for people placing take out order. Walk past the line inside, and you can almost always sit right down in the restaurant. The pros: the food is delicious, the portions are big and the prices seem fair, the food tastes hot and fresh, and the service is good. Last night my husband and I each got an egg drop soup (the hot and sour soup is better), an order of egg rolls (very good), sweet and sour chicken with the sauce on the side (the strips of chicken, not the little round pieces; crispy and really good), and ham fried rice (delicious- cut the big pieces of ham into smaller pieces and misleading them into the rice). Was visiting in New Orleans and was looking for some Yaka Mein and came across this spot. Being that this was my first experience I have nothing else to compare it to but it was delish. Porpotioned was well worth the money. The only down side is that the parking is terrible. read more

Great place for that craving of Chinese food. Portion sizes are great, it's a lot but not excessive. I like their chef special fried rice and fried boneless chicken. The egg rolls are also a must. You order and get a number, then you go sit in a waiting room and wait for your number to be called. I love the fact the chicken is always perfectly cooked, never over fried. I stick with the sweet and sour chicken. The sauce is sweet and rich,along with the huge pieces of peppers and pineapple that adds a more authentic taste. Now lets talk EGGROLL! The best egg-roll in the city PERIOD! Going to Xavier University, this was a cheap come-up/full belly when it came to food. Even then & more so now, found it to be palatable, but not as good as other places & as of late, they're definitely not as good as they were pre-Katrina. I only obliged my dining partner by going here & I was so sorry that I did. This was the dinner that catapulted an awful rest of my day!!!! Ughhhh, wonderful!!!!! I won't go back... EVER!!!!! To be noted: I tried to get the sweet & sour shrimp without all the fried breading around it... that was a NO-GO. The MaiTai tasted like flavored sugar water... yuck. Whenever you visit New Orleans this is a must stop if you like Chinese food. It is the best in the city and for miles around. I don't get down to New Orleans much but this time I had to visit. I took my wife and brother in law for a bite but since it had been a while since I have been here. We ordered a couple of dishes and soon found out they give you a LOT of food and we had way too much to eat. I had boneless chicken, with vegetables and fried rice and Yak-a-mein. My wife and brother in law had ribs and large fried rice. Between the 3 of us we barely put a dent in that food so we had a couple of to go boxes at the end. The shrimp fried rice has not been restored to its pre -Katrina taste. I keep returning hoping to get a different taste. The egg rolls are the best I have ever had in my life. When I am travelling from New Orleans, I often buy two and place them in a ziploc bag. Sad but true. The fried wontons, pepper steak and shrimp and broccoli are also good. I have not found any Chinese restaurant that comes close to Chinese Kitchen's delicious Mandarin Chicken and their Egg Rolls. Unfortunately, I'm not a regular I once was when I was younger. I am an avid Chinese food lover. I've been to some really authentic Chinese places primarily domestic, and it's really hard to find a genuinely good Chinese restaurant. This place is simply just got food. It's not fancy, rather it's just a hole in the wall that serves really good Chinese food. My favorite dishes are the eggrolls with shrimp and pork, shrimp and lobster sauce, shrimp fried rice, and mandarin chicken with the gravy on the side. It's just good comfort food, and if you I want good food that's plentiful and tasty, this is your place. Anytime I go there's always a line outside the door, but that's pretty common and the line moves fairly quickly. The food was great! The service was not great. The lady taking my order screamed at me because I asked a question. The wait for my food was about 10 minutes. I ordered ham fried rice, chicken fried rice, shrimp and lobster sauce lunch special , boneless chicken lunch special, and Of course an order of egg rolls. All of my food was hot, fresh, and taste amazing. My only complaint with my visit here was that the lady was rude screamed at me. I've been coming here since I was a little girl and I think they are just naturally rude. I asked her why was she screaming at me and she said she was trying to ask me a question. We had not eaten from this place on years! And, when I walked in it looked exactly the same. I mean they haven't changed or updated a thing. They really need to step up their technology. Currently, they do not accept phone orders or internet orders. They would do a lot more business if they invested in a app where you could order and pay ahead. A friend of mine told me about Chinese kitchen! How it was the best ever and we had to try them in NOLA ! Got to the front ! I was like is this the place ! The only reason I ever come here is for the egg rolls. Egg rolls are huge and crispy....also full of shrimp, chicken, cabbage and pork that actually has flavor unlike most eggrolls. Every time I get an entree, it's under seasoned IMO and underwhelming. The boneless fried chicken for instance is super crispy but has no salt or seasonings. Fried rice is bland. I never understood the hype of this place. There are MUCH better Chinese restaurants. Also not a very clean restaurant on the inside. One of my friends kept telling me about this place. One night after the parades I decided to stop in and get some food. I noticed this place is always really busy. Instead of dining in I decided to order my food to go. The lady behind the counter was friendly enough. I will admit that I did have to wait a little while on my food. Oh Chinese Kitchen, how i've missed thee. It's literally been since pre-Katrina since i've eaten Chinese Kitchen. My parent's used to order take-out from here so much that i literally had to stop myself from going there once i was of age to drive and make my own decisions on what to eat. However just the other day the urge came rushing back to me for what i remember to be some of the best boneless chicken and combination rice i've eaten. The smell, the taste, everything was a rush of culinary nostalgia! Oh! that boneless chicken, it's so damn good! I remember reports in the past about their 'health conditions' but i'll tell ya what, if a bug or two made it's way into anything i've ever eaten here then i say it's part of the amazing tasting recipe they've got going on, and i don't mind (as long as it blends in well enough). Although i gotta say, they kinda treat you like $h*t at the counter, but they have such a monopoly on the Chinese food in the city it's almost...no, it IS worth the abuse! Try and pick your battles when coming to this place though because if there are a lot of people there, expect to wait at least 20-30 minutes for your food depending on what people before you ordered. As a fellow CHINESE person My dad used to have a competitor restaurant called Tommy's rickshaw. It closed a long time ago and more importantly yelp didn't exist back in the day. My dad and I used to taste their food and never questioned there success. No jealousy here. Now it's a different breed of restaurant. Next door is five happiness. They are NOT LIKE THEM.
