Great way to end a food tour! I got a dark chocolate peanut butter chip cookie and it's SO GOOD. Would be better to have with milk - I will be finishing it later with one for sure. I'm not a huge fan of sweet/savory combinations, but my peeps wanted to try the most unique flavor on display -- a croissant with a pretzel layer stuffed with a chocolate chip cookie & finished with salt. This is an unfair review mainly because I'm ideologically opposed to the idea of a cookie-specific bakery. My hot take is that cookies place in a bakery is as a side show. They're there if you can't make up your mind and just want to put a stick of butter in your face. But to orient your whole business around bad decision-making ability...well, maybe that's actually a successful model. These cookies are particularly offensive because they're cakes. Flat, structureless cakes. They taste like what would happen if you got impatient with Pillsbury and took it out of the oven. Had a late night hankering for the "perfect" chocolate chip cookie in the Flatiron/Chelsea/West Village area. It was after 6pm on a Saturday so all the choice were dwindled down to two that remained open: Chip City (closes at 11pm) and Mah-Ze Dahr Bakery (closes at 9pm). I mean, you'd think at this time of the evening on a weekend in the busiest city in the world that more would be open as tourists and locals alike start coming out of the woodwork from their home offices, hotel rooms and airports to venture into the streets desiring to bump into things like the "best" chocolate chip cookie in town! Sadly, in this tight 4 mile radius, only these two were open past 6pm. So here it goes. Firstly, both servers at each establishment were easy-going, friendly, enthusiastic about their chip being the best in town so they tied at 10/10 for customer service. Chip City interior focuses on the cookies on the aluminum pan, like this place was designed by a freshman in college who just didn't give a *hit, but it works. It's spacious and you can't miss it. It's at the corner of Bleecker, Barrow and Seventh Ave S. Because Chip City closes much later (11pm) and it was only past near 8pm, the empty cookie sheet was getting filled by a new fresh batch of their "for a limited time" cookie (I forget the name of it), but the point is that this is as fresh as you can get... nearing 8pm and they are still baking cookies out of the oven!!!! I did go for the original chocolate chip cookie and it wasn't too sweet. My first thought was ... woowh, this cookie feels like it weigh about a tonne. I was looking for some chewy, goowy choc cookie and that is exactly what I got. LOVE IT. However, after a few bits, I feel like taking a break because it is quite heavy in the belly. Thankfully, with cookies, you can place them in a Tupperware or ziplock and lasts for a week at least. The Chip City Cookie is more than double the cost of the Mah-Ze Dahr cookie: $4.50 vs $2.40, but it also weighs a tonne while the Mah-Ze Dahr is like the interior of their space, dainty and refined. If you'd like to hear about the Mah-Ze Dahr Chocolate Explosion Cookie experience, I'll see you on the other side. YES to this Choc Chip cookie, regardless of a late night hankering. It's one of the best in the city. I think Levain's cookies are just as weighty, but a tonne sweeter too so I prefer the Chip City compared to Levain's. read more

Okay so... finally decided to try this 'tiktok famous' bakery. As you might expect, you'll pay a premium for the cookies here, as they are larger (and more caloric) than your average chocolate chip cookie. My partner and I tried two - the double chocolate and the classic chocolate chip. The price is $4.75+tax per cookie, and each cookie is 4 servings at 180-220 calories per serving. So basically, 1 cookie = a whole meal. Let's not think about all that The taste: Warm, gooey, perfect balance of sweetness and buttery cookie flavor. If I were to pick one to go for again, I preferred the regular chocolate chip as it was not as sweet as the double chocolate. No surprise there. They do have some adventurous flavors like horchata and sweet potato s'mores available, but at the price point, I wouldn't go out of my way to come back. If I'm sharing the cookie with two or three friends, then fair play. But who wants just a fourth of a cookie? They're just too large for me to consciously enjoy as a dessert after a meal, and probably not as good cold as they are when they're fresh and warm from the shop. The ambiance of this location was very clean and tidy. The worker behind the counter was patient and kind. Not much seating available, but there are a few window ledge seats. Came here and got the chocolate chip cookie and the funfetti cookie. Honestly, both were pretty decent, on the mid-upper end of good cookies within New York. They were both hefty cookies, with a very cake-like consistency inside. There was good textural contrast between crisp bottom and the softer inside. I would say that we enjoyed the funfetti cookie overall a little bit more than the chocolate chip (even though we were all chocolate chip fans). We felt that the given the saturation in the chocolate chip market, we expect only the highest from that particular cookie. Funfetti is not a super common cookie flavor, so maybe there were less comparisons to be made, but we felt like it was moderately more enjoyable than the other.
