10/28/24 Must have passed by this tiny shop more than a couple dozen times-never knew it was here!! The reviews were pretty accurate about its size, perhaps a room/space for 3-4 maximum (if you're all related & fairly intimate enough to share the personal space). It has a refrigerated showcase/display that features their array of delectable delights. The cacao is grown about10 minutes away from the shop & a picture hangs on the wall (see photo) of the lady, Ms. Mitchell, who makes all the chocolates. This is according to Debra, the lady tending to the shop. I had my heart set on (3 piece @ $7.00) Dark & Stormy plus the 70% Cacao Truffle Turtles (3 piece for $8.50, unless I mixed up the prices). One for the road, Coffee Drop, &2.75 per piece just to try. It was very good, smooth, not overly sweet but I could not detect the coffee taste, but it was quite delectable. Imagine the dimensions of 8 x 8 ft of a shop, the display case at the center towards the back a tad. If you're facing the case, another display case (shelf, no refrigerated) will be on your left with cacao nibs packages. There's a metal bench in front of the shop under the awning of the structure. Debra was personable & attentive. She mentioned that the hours have changed to 12 noon to 5 pm daily. Additionally, she said they've expanded the shop about a square foot recently. I love supporting local businesses & this place gets the thumbs up. FYI, keep the treats cold, they're delicate, or eat them quickly--no problem there. Must stop tiny shop! The chocolate here is incredible. I also highly recommend the 5 piece sampler. Jack told us about his wife's passion and chocolates - and the story is so cool! This definitely is a place to visit to try chocolate! Truffles - the outside has a crunchy perfect shell - and the inside of the truffle is very soft and melts in your mouth. Definitely get one of the powerhouse bars there's nothing quite like it. Go give Jack a visit! Located directly across room the Old Hanalei School building. read more

Very cute store and the chocolate was decent. However, the older gentleman that was working the store might not be the usual person. He asked us if we wanted samples, which we of course, said yes. He continue to grab the samples with his bare fingers which wouldn't be so bad other than the fact that you had a Band-Aid on one of them and couldn't get a hold of the chocolate so continue to touch it all over. Immediately after, he told us that it would be $5 and change. We wanted to be polite so we went ahead and ordered a couple more options but while we were deciding another couple came in and he was hurrying us along to purchase the two samples he initially offered. This place got incredible reviews, and we were excited to try them. And again something tells me that this is not the usual person running the store and may not be the best person to be operating it. Just gave an $18 donation for a 2 ounce 80% chocolate bar that was not good at all. We thought the price would be a reflection of the bar's awesomeness, but that was not the case at all. My boyfriend and I stopped in today and had such an amazing experience! Jack (the salesman) said we were his first customers from Pennsylvania! He gave us an in-depth story about his wife's chocolatier journey and we were immediately sold. We bought the 70% Powerhouse bar that is entirely grown, picked, fermented, etc. by Irmgard herself who grew the cocoa plants years ago! The bar is amazing and nothing like any other chocolate we've had before. The star of the show for us was their peppermint bark though! It was absolutely divine! It's not like normal peppermint bark that had candy cane pieces in it, and it tastes ever better. Cute lil place right off the main road in Hanalei. Small store front and the staff is friendly and helpful. The chocolate selection is plentiful and lots of flavors. We chose the Dark & Stormy and the Hanalei PBJ. They were both very delicious. I'd definitely go back and try the other flavor options. Locally made. Visiting Kauai for a week and found them while walking the streets in Hanalei. Struck up a conversation with the person in the store. I believe now that I was speaking with Irmgard, the primary chocolatier. I have a group where I live and have done chocolate truffles for more than 20 years. We do small batches for friends once per year, so I know a bit about chocolate. Theirs were most excellent. Very creamy and not too sweet. My husband and I walked in and asked if they had any vegan chocolates, to which the employee responded, "almost all of our chocolates are vegan". So we picked out a few and confirmed with her that they were vegan. Mind you, most of the chocolates are behind glass. We returned to our hotel and after reading the labels on the boxes, discovered that they all contain butter and/or cream. I emailed the owner who debated with me and accused me of not reading labels. Again the labels were on the boxed chocolates which are stored behind the glass. Consequently, you cannot see the ingredients until you have purchased them. Some businesses are kind and customer-centered. When they or their employees make a mistake, they apologize and offer to make things right. Not so here. read more

Tiny Chocolat shop, BIG on delicious, unique, handmade chocolates! Everything is scratch made with local fruits and chocolate from local cacao pods. A friend of mine recently moved to Kauai and when she came back to Portland for a visit, she brought me a box of the dark chocolate covered apple banana sticks. They were out of this world! Dangerously good! When I visited my friend and her husband in Kauai later that year, my first request was "take me to that chocolate shop! Located on the North shore at the far end of the Hanalei shopping center, Chocolat Hanalei is easy to miss. It's a tiny little light green standalone shop. Look for it! Find it! Inside there are glass cases filled with a variety of delicious treats, those with fruit often depending on what is available. The day I was there, they did not have the apple banana sticks so I bought the dark chocolate covered mango. Phenomenal! The contrast of flavors and texture was superb. The chocolate is so smooth. I also bought the dark chocolate covered caramel with sea salt and have yet to open the box. Once opened, they disappear. Fast! Wish they did mail order! Finally after a failed attempt to visit on a last trip, I finally got to try this place that came highly recommended. Sandwich between a couple of other businesses dotting the road in Hanalei is this quant little shack of a place. It's a simple brown square building with a celadon-colored roof bearing "Chocolat Hanalei" in brown cursive. The inside is a tight space of similarly pale-green walls, various photos of cacao in different stages of cultivation, a simple glass counter filled with a variety of hand-made chocolates, and behind that the kindly employee and a refrigeration unit. The air is pleasantly heavy with bittersweet cacao and rain begins to tap on the roof that touches my head. Peppermint bark, pb&j, coconut truffles, coffee, passion fruit, 60% and up dark, all kinds of fine chocolates available. Each little fine treat runs between a buck or two and can be put in boxes of three or six. After a bit of decision making, I decided on some passion fruit domes, and a thing of their 70% extra dark bites. I was handed my two transparent boxes, each filled with three chocolate pieces. The extra dark came as little squares of dark brown goodness topped with a fine line of sea-salt. The domes had a funky tiger-stripe, swirly appearance. Both choices were worth the wait. Simply delicious from both treats. The dark punched my tastebuds with a deliciously bitter, slightly citrusy, but made slightly sweet thanks to the dart bite of salt. The passionfruit lands as my favorite, and not because my love for the fruit possibly gives me a bias. But a pleasantly sweet, milky, dark chocolate shell hides some fantastically tart and mouthwatering passionfruit curd. I wish I could just cram a bunch in my mouth, but alas I would burn a large hole in my wallet and not savor it as much. Chocolat Hanalei is a great little stop that serves charm as well as top-notch chocolate truffles. It's worth a stop. That is if you can catch it open. read more

Bought the dark chocolate coffee drops, and they were full of mold. Yes, MOLD. Awful.

I tried two truffles: the cacao nibs and the lilikoi. Surprisingly, I liked the lilikoi better. The chocolate is definitely high quality, very smooth and beautiful to boot. The shop owner (?) explained how most of the products are locally grown and produced. He was very friendly. This place is a must in Kauai. read more

Chocolat Hanalei's storefront is a cute but tiny little shed that can easily be missed. Find it, because you will be in for a treat. The chocolates are locally handcrafted by a husband and wife duo, and the cacao comes from their farm in nearby Wainiha Valley. The selection is small but diverse and includes fruit-flavored chocolate truffles, chocolate bark, and chocolate covered macadamia nuts. The chocolate pieces are as tasty as they are beautiful, and the prices are on par with other artisan chocolate stores. Aside from the chocolate products, Chocolat Hanalei also sells OnoPops and their own postcards. Enjoy your treats on the benches out front, and maybe thumb through one of the books in the bookcase. As we explored Hanalei, we found ourselves attracted to this adorable little chocolate shop. We love chocolate. During our trip, we made every effort to seek out Hawaii and Kauai made goods. This chocolate shop was one of the best examples of Kauai made goods. Owned by a wife and husband team, we were taken care of by the husband. The wife makes all of the chocolate and it is ALL delicious. We left with a variety of delicious treats including several truffles (get the passion fruit one!) that did not make it back to the hotel. We also purchased ginger chocolates that were fantastic and a dark chocolate bar that will not last for much longer in our home. Amazing hand-crafted chocolates to be found at Chocolat Hanalei Super nice owner used to grow grapes in Napa and now he's growing chocolate pods here on the island We tried the Passion fruit salted caramels ( their most popular and most labor-intensive ) and they were tart and fruity and melted in the mouth! Wished we had bought like 12 more of these Coconut truffles were creamy and intensely coconutty - the center was a bit liquidy which made it even more delicious.....not sure if this was by design or because we'd been walking around the 85 degree heat for a spell. Whatever the case, they were incredible Passion fruit domes - take my beloved lilikoi and out a chocolate coating around it? i bought two little packets (3 each) of the coffee truffles after tastig their ganache at the chocolate fair on sunday october 15 in lihue. i am a chocolate connosier and have never tasted better chocolate. not cheap - $8 for three medium size pieces, but if i want to impress someone with the quality that hawaii is capable of, i would give them a small piece of chocolate hanalei. i hope they ship because i don't live in kauai but a neighboring island. in 75 years i probaboy hever had more exquisite chocolate. congratulations! read more

If you're strolling around Kauai, this chocolatier is easy to miss! Glad that my husband pointed it out and encouraged us to enter. It's a tiny shop, but they offer truffles in different flavors. I tried one truffle and the flavor was a ginger and rum combination. The texture of the chocolate was smooth and the ginger and rum flavors were strong but didn't overpower each other. I talked with the employee there, and he explained how the cacao comes directly from Hawaii and had a great passion for talking about how their chocolate is made!
