Trigger warning. I bought a bagel sandwich Monday morning and inside, where there was a mound of turkey, I realized (too late) an entire wet paper towel was imbedded. I am so disgusted by this that I didn't even feel like calling to tell them and needed a minute before I could even write a review. I really wanted to like Chompie's, especially since it's positioned as a New York-style Jewish deli and pastry shop -- a concept I usually love. Unfortunately, the experience didn't live up to expectations. The portions are definitely generous, which is a plus, but the food itself was surprisingly bland across the board. With the amount of ingredients and the size of the dishes, you'd expect bold, comforting flavors, but everything fell flat. Even adding salt didn't seem to bring anything to life. The biggest disappointment was the matzo ball soup, which is usually a staple at places like this. Ours had an off-putting, almost rancid oil taste that made it hard to finish. It honestly made me question the freshness of the ingredients. Service and atmosphere were fine, but when the food is the main draw, it just didn't deliver. You'll find Chompie's in the Mercado del Rancho plaza. Staff are the nicest and most helpful people. I got a few Florentine cookies to go. Their desserts are delicious and they have many to offer. I thought about a knish but I resisted this time. I just made potatoes at home and they will fulfill me. If you've never had a knish, they are typically filled with mashed potatoes with a light dough around them. They are either baked or fried. I like the baked ones. You can find knishes with potatoes and spinach, or with broccoli or sometimes with a meat but rarely. In any event, they are very filling. I usually eat about 1/4-1/2 of a knish. Put a bit of mustard on it and yum yum. Shared parking lot. read more

These people are the rudest, slowest, and most inconsiderate staff. I'm sitting outside waiting as my wife orders food and paying for overpriced bagels and cream cheese. There is one couple outside and 7+ free tables. Apparently I sat in the wrong section where they serve. There is no one here. So I had to move to the other side and wait. The rudeness and the tone and the attitude I got for sitting in the "wrong" seat was insane. They also charge for everything. You want your bagel sliced, charge (by a machine they don't do any work), you want it toasted, charge. To wait in line you have to navigate through all these people because they put junk on every side of the entryway. I've been here enough to know I'm good I'll be fine never coming back. read more

I have to be honest, it appears to me that with the exception of a handful of delis in the Valley of the Sun, Chompie's is one of the few so-called Delis that bring me back to my early years in Brooklyn! They offer such goodies as: Belly Lox; Salmon; Whitefish; Herring in different styles; Cod; Pastrami; Beef Brisket; and especially good Pastrami and much, much more reminiscent of the good old days! I must say, very few joints in the Valley can make really good matzo ball soup - this is one of them. So is the Reuben for that matter! Nick and Kelly are so warm Anna attentive in service and the good my last two visits was perfect! Bagels perfectly prepared! Love the side of salmon lock with onion biali! One ounce side of salmon lox was perfectly portioned! i added the side of tomatoes, onions and capers and it was so perfect! I'll definitely be getting this again...I'll probably just go with the bagel next time for less crunch, more tender bread. Was in Phoenix and stopped for breakfast. Ordered corned beef hash & eggs (heck - was at Jewish deli) and was disappointed. Ordered eggs over easy and the came out over hard. Another stop at Chompie's after a medical appointment. I arrived at 11:15 on a Tuesday morning and there were only a handful of full tables. More patrons arrived as I ate. I ordered two Western BBQ Sliders with coleslaw and it came to $15.63 plus tip. My meal came out in about 8 mins. It came with two buttery, warm buns, lots of BBQ beef oozing with BBQ sauce, some grilled onions, some fried onion rings and a thick slice of melted cheddar. There was also a side of BBQ sauce, along with my large helping of slaw. I dove right in and was met with the sweet sauce, tangy cheddar and rich beef. It was just what I wanted in a slider. The slaw was just as good, with a mayo based sauce. I prefer the vinegar based slaw myself but this version was exceptional. The service was spot on. I was greeted cheerfully at the hostess stand and my waiter was attentive. The manager checked in on me a couple of times as well. I'll be back to Chompie's if I'm ever in the area again. read more

Husband and I are new to AZ and my co-workers told me about Chompie's and the food is DELISH!! I purchased a pastrami Ruben for our lunch the following day, got it home and we looked at each other and dug in! The rye bread was so soft, fresh and delicious- like a perfect dream! And the fresh and SUPURB pastrami- completely blows the last Ruben sandwich we had in Sacramento out of the water. They have lots of fresh baked goods which I am looking forward to trying. This restaurant is perfect for family dinning. All breads and bagels are made in house. You can also purchase more freshly made breads because there is a bakery also there. We were greeted by a very nice lady upon entering Chompie's and were seated immediately. Our waitress Kelley was very friendly and helpful. They also have a protein pancake which I truly enjoyed. We drove to Chandler Chompies for breakfast this morning as I was craving Chompies. The service was a bit slow but OK. The restaurant is definitely understaffed. I ordered 2 scrambled eggs, cooked softly and they were fine. I also ordered an everything bagel with Honey Raisin Walnut cream cheese. The bagel tasted old and crumbly. I'm wondering if they gave me a gluten free? Or it was stale. The cream cheese portion was very small and it appeared to be stale. It would barely spread. Very disappointed. read more

The fries were crispy and creamy. The pickles were firm and crunchy. Tried the pastrami, corned beef reuben, and their brisket. You can order 1/2 sandwiches without up charge. We went to Chompie's last night for a birthday dinner; and sadly it was not up to the usual quality. Firstly, the sandwiches were about 1/2-2/3 the size they were a couple of years ago; and the prices increased by 40%. Also, no pickles on the table and we were NEVER brought any - despite asking for them several times. What happened?? Too bad because you're the only game in town- and maybe the rats the problem. Other thing that didn't sit well with me- I just had total knee replacement 2 weeks ago and I called to make a reservation and was told I could not because there we were only 4 of us- come on- how about an exception for knee replacement and birthday? read more

We stop by Chompies for desert sometimes. The baked goods are great. I've been looking forward to trying the restaurant. I order their flagship burger. The obe with the color picture on the menu. The claims its served with fresh confiments... lettuce, tomato, onions, and pickles. An 18.00 burger gets dropped on my table with no pickle, no onion, and entirely wilted lettuce. The lettuce wasn't wilted from the heat of the cooked meat. It was served on the side beneath sliced tomatoes. We had a great waitress. My mom raised 6 kids on waitress earnings so I don't complain in restaurants. Some of her stories about cooks make me worry about what comes back. Its unacceptable. A great burger is more than just a chunk of beef on a bun and management needs to know what is being served. read more

I've been a faithful customer of chompies. Usually good counter service. But my prior two experiences have been terrible. Today at 715 a.m. I stood waiting to order 2 bagels. One employee filling a large order for a waiting customer another stocking a shelf and the one behind the counter took a phone order and filled another phone order. No one even acknowledged me. The only customer. When the counter clerk finally came to me she offered no comment for the wait. Very poor customer service. And this is the second time I've had this experience. Great selection of New York/jewish deli. Giant sandwiches and soups. They're open for breakfast lunch and a somewhat early dinner. My two favorite things on the menu are the mile high pastrami and chopped liver sandwiches on challa roll and matzo ball soup . The service is good and attentive , they have holiday menus.
