A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, someone recommended that I try The Chop Shop because they thought I would like the Hare Tacos. It's been on my list of places to try ever since but I don't make it to Butler very often so it took me longer to make it there than expected. I was finally in the neighborhood and had dinner at The Chop Shop with a friend. When I looked over the menu, everything looked amazing. (Please note: the menu on their website is not complete.) It was difficult to decide but I don't really think you can go wrong here. I of course had to order the Hare Tacos as an appetizer, no question about that. But how many sandwiches could I order after that? I went with the Sausage Wallet. It contains sausage, cheese and banana peppers on a nice foccacia bread. The bread was slightly toasted so it was nice and crunchy which really made a difference. I may have kept talking about the bread with every bite. My friend ordered the breaded/fried chicken sandwich (I forget the official name) that sort of made me jealous when I saw how massive the piece of chicken was. We both ordered the homemade chips as our side. We didn't remember seeing it on the menu, but we're pretty sure the homemade chips are a combination of regular and sweet potatoes. Oh, and those Hare Tacos I'd been waiting over a year to try? They were unlike anything I've ever had before. An unlikely combination (coffee rubbed rabbit, smoked sour cream, salsa and pickled peppers) that created a fiesta in my mouth. Service was quick and friendly, vibe was relaxed and comfortable. There are booths along the one wall and tables in two dining rooms with an open view of the kitchen. I fell on 4 stars mostly because I think I may be able to have a better sandwich there. I was more than happy with my selection but I was a little pressed for time when we ordered. I believe there are other options that would be even more fantastic. I wish there were more places in Butler like Chop Shop. Good 'Merican food, locally owned. The biggest drawback is probably the unusual restaurant hours. Lunch only some days, dinner only other days. It's kinda confusing. Basically, they should be open more! Burgers are solid and made to order, but my favorite entree at Chop Shop is the crab cake sandwich. It's nice and flavorful without being over the top unhealthy. The shoe string onion rings, one of the side options, are a little too greasy for me. They're tasty as hell, but they usually require an antacid afterwards. Oh, and they have the obligatory pierogi appetizer, just in case you forgot you were in the Pittsburgh area. read more

Butler had nothing like this before now. The Chop Shop uses quality fresh ingredients to power a menu of simple and yet creative mod-American cuisine. Everything I've tasted is delicious. The atmosphere is casual and hip, the waitstaff is friendly, and chef/ owner Bill makes a mean omelet. I'll be back again and again. read more

In the interest of full disclosure, I know the owners. But if I thought their food sucked, I'd just politely decline to offer a review. Honestly, the only drawback I can think of is how difficult it can be to find a decent parking spot close to the place. I'm Butler-born, but currently living in Washington, DC. If the chop shop existed here, it would be a trendy place that people would keep to themselves for fear of it becoming "too popular". In Butler, it's a shining gem that elevates the whole of downtown. Having eaten there a handful of times, I know that the tasty food and attentive service isn't a fluke: it's the rule. Forget the clever names of their menu items and just look at the inventive way they combine ingredients: you'd have to drive the whole way down to Pittsburgh to find its match. Anyway, anytime my wife and I come home, I annoy the crap out of everyone by asking if we can please go to the Chop Shop. If you live in or around Butler, you have no excuse. Stopped here for lunch today and WOW! This has given me a reason to head up north to Butler for dining a bit more often. I got the Redneck sandwich which had chicken, BBQ sauce, lettuce, and ham on a grilled Pita. It was juicy, tasty, and a bit messy. My wife got a Reuben and while it was a Reuben the ingredients were fresh and tasty. I can't wait to head back and get the duck bacon salad. read more

I stopped in here on a whim for work. What a a greatly themed restaurant. It's pretty cool. Especially if your a car person. It was lunch time and I did not have to wait to be seated. We sat right down. I got the Nirvana Burger with everything on it, cooked medium. Huge burger came out and it was absolutely delicious! I even ate the stuff that fell out of the burger. Love the atmosphere this place has. So far the only burger I've tried is the chili Mac n cheese, but it's so good I've been back for it five times already. Only reason I'm doing four instead of five stars, last time the fries tasted like they were fried in the same grease as the fish. read more

Great food, cool atmosphere (hipster i.e. exposed brick) and a menu that is like Michael Jackson...Off the Wall. Names for the dishes, combos, etc. are hilarious. Literally make me LOL every time. Some a little crass if your mind is wedged in between some leaves in the gutter. Food is good n' plenty, tasty, prepared quickly, and the servers are friendly/refill drinks regularly. Actually refill your Mason jar on the reg. that is. Only downside: the open kitchen has you smelling like you've been working in it all day by the time you leave, no matter how quickly or not quickly you dine. Fantastic restaurant. I've been there a couple times, and each them they have never failed to produce a unique and delicious meal. What a great restaurant in downtown Butler. If you go hole hungry it is your own fault. I had the shredded pork sandwich with home made chips. It was delish. The pork nachos are a great starter. I highly recommend the s'more cheesecake. This place also has a kids menu; so bring the family. Come for dinner as there is more parking downtown in the evening. I've been a diner here since almost day one. This place should be the standard of how to run a restaurant. Good, fresh and local options, great specials, great service and awesome atmosphere. The standard menu is always on point and I absolutely love their "build a burger" option. They also have a catering business that I have used in the past for my workplace. Just like the restaurant their catering events have the same high standards and incredible food. I've been in the culinary industry for 23 years now (I'm a culinary instructor now) and there are very few places that can compare in the area to The Chop Shop. I've had a few of my students work for The Chop Shop and I get very excited when they tell me they work there. I'm very comfortable with my students starting their careers there because I know what a great place it is to work and learn. read more

This place was awesome. Honestly, for how fantastic the food was it should have been PACKED for lunch. I had "The Doc" which was a pulled pork sandwich. My aunt had a roasted vegetable wrap and my mom had the hare taco appetizer as a main. We all really enjoyed our food! To top off our meal we had the ho ho roll which was incredible. Surprised to find this gem in a small town. Nice decor/vibe, great food, and friendly service. Burgers, sandwiches, soups, and salads with a bit of a upscale twist. You can be as good or bad as you want as they have something for everyone (vegetarians and carnivores alike). BTW the apple cobbler skillet for dessert is worth the calories. First a word about the decor : outside funky , inside wacky The food is great : why is this terrific eatery hiding in Butler ? I had the 'Land Yacht' sandwich which has FIVE deli meats cheese with lettuce , tomato and onion + dressings if you want ! A generous side dish as well . This would be a challenge for Two very hungry men to consume Wife had the day's special 'Mahi-Mahi wrap ...exquisite for her ! Daughter had the 'Eternal Damnation' sandwich with shredded pork pickles on a Manci Roll , plus great fries . Could only eat half at one setting ! Hey we just passed through Butler, PA (home of the Bantam Jeep) and stopped at the Chop Shop on the recommendation of a young kid working in a nearby store. All I can say is that this place is a simple and straightforward little restaurant with a smaller menu but great food. I found the selections somewhat unusual, and also noted several vegan options. I'm not vegan and didn't care to study them, but my wife is sometimes (haha) and thought it was a great little selection. I can verify that they make an absolutely great burger, and their desserts were out of this world! We were told that the owner's mom actually makes the desserts daily. The servers were very friendly and didn't mind answering all my dumb questions about the area. They were also fast! I would definitely recommend anyone stop there for a good honest fast sit down meal. read more
