Manhattan, NY (Moynihan Hall) - I have my favorite go-to salad places in the area so the only time I visit Chopt is when I'm in Moynihan Train Hall to pick up the occasional salad before boarding Amtrak. (Cos no one wants to smell your fried chicken sandwich or bacon cheeseburger on the train.) It's ok and the service is hit or miss. I ordered a build-your-own salad but got thrown off by the sequencing as the person asked for my ingredients, then the base, dressing, and proceeded to chop up my salad. When I mentioned I would also like to add chicken, she was visibly annoyed and shuffled back to scoop the meat out of a warming pot behind her and plopped it into the bowl. To be fair, the proteins are positioned at the start of the salad bar (while the warm options are entirely out of sight), so we were already at the end of the assembly line when I interrupted her choreographic flow mid-chop. I thought it was liturgical practice to follow the steps of base, toppings, main protein, dressing, and for the ingredients to be displayed more or less in that order, but I guess the concept of a "chopt" salad is that it all get chopped up and mixed in together anyway so the architecture doesn't matter. For the price, which is comparable to Just Salad and Sweetgreen, the ingredients just aren't as premium or interesting. The few salad and bowl experiences I've had here have been mediocre and clocks in at a 2 out of 10 on my excitement meter, but I did genuinely enjoy a wrap I got here once. read more

It's a fast casual concept with salads and bowls, and, while I've never understood why a salad would be made better by chopping every ingredient up into small bits of all the same size, they do make decent salads and bowls. The food court at Moynihan Train Hall is surprisingly great. I was planning on eating horrible (for me) food for the rest of the day though, and so I needed a salad in my life. Chopt was here for me. After entirely too much deliberation (the staff was very patient, and quite efficient), I rolled with the Chicken Tinga Bowl. It's well balanced with the braised chicken, avocado, black beans, kale, cotija, and the cornerstone of every healthy salad, tortilla chips. I got extra avocado and extra chicken, and it was almost too much food. I could've used a little hot sauce, but no complaints overall. It was a solid meal, and a healthier option than most of the nearby stands. There are also plenty of tables to sit at in the high-ceilinged dining hall, and wi-fi to play around on if you're dining alone. I'm sure I'll be back someday soon. read more

I ended up making the train with like 8 minutes to spare so I really didn't need to do allat, but no pressure no diamond you feel me? I sat down in the last car of the Amtrak train, and cracked open my Blissful Harvest bowl made up of kale, chicken, sweet potatoes, rice, and apples dressed with a white balsamic vinegar dressing and dug in. Not bad. I tend to gravitate towards sad salads when I'm on a work trip, because I know my stomach can handle them. And Chopt is the king of the sad salad chains. I placed my order a few days before and cautiously approached the super long line five minutes after the selected time window, only to be very pleasantly surprised when a nice lady promptly fished out my bag and handed it over, already packed with utensils and napkins. (I say this because I had a miserable experience with Cava, where someone stole my to-go order and I had to wait in a super long line to get my food, thus defeating the purpose of placing an order in advance.) This baby was quite heavy and chock full of veggies, which my body desperately needed - I loved the roasted broccoli and beets. Everything tasted pretty fresh. All in all, I could've made two meals out of a $17 salad (which definitely beats Sweetgreen in terms of cost) but ... as it were, I was on a train with nothing else to do so I ate the whole thing out of boredom. The renovation they did to Penn Station with Moynihan train hall is stunning and it's so nice to have a food hall in this area of the city (especially because it's only a few blocks from my office!) Each stand in the food hall looks more appealing than the next, but occasionally, it's nice to go to a known entity, where you know what you can expect. I love that about Chop't, that I can go into any location across the city and within reason receive about the same meal. My experience at this location did not serve me well, however. Being in the train station, it is a very popular and crowded location, which I was prepared for. I ordered from my desk at work, schmoozed with coworkers for about 15 minutes, took 5 minutes to gather my things and exit the building, walked 5 minutes to the food hall, saw my meal wasn't ready, wandered around Moynihan for another 15 minutes people-watching, and when I returned there was a massive line and my salad still wasn't ready. I hung out another fifteen minutes and finally my salad was ready. I brought it back to my office and was disappointed to open it and see a full hunk of avocado plopped on top of my salad, not chop't, with brown spots. Diving deeper into my salad, it looked like they had purposefully selected the mushiest cherry tomatoes and tried to chop them with the dullest knife they owned. Miserable. I ended up creating my own salad with spinach, grilled chicken, pickled onions, tomatoes, cucumbers, and edamame. The salad was fine, nothing to really write home about but it really hit the spot after such a long day. It's a generous portion size that could easily make more than one meal. The fresh bread on the side is a delicious touch - had it been warmed up, it would have been out of this world. Throughout the salad, I did notice that the dressing I ordered (the chopt vinaigrette) really overpowered the salad overall. The staff were kind, as I approached the counter, I mentioned it is my first time here. The man smiled back offering no clear directions. So I asked, can I order off menu, and he said that I can choose 3 sides and build my own salad or choose from the menu. Then I said, eggs, chicken and bacon. He said, "Sides are not protein" - so in my rush to catch a train I ordered a familiar Cobb salad. The Cobb salad was delicious and I had to eat it in two separate settings. I was able to order a local IPA. They put a brown bag around it, which enables you to walk with it freely in the station. Although it was allowed, I didn't want to have difficulty carrying my luggage, nor did I want to attract unwanted attention.
