I totally dig having a healthy option as a go to that is easy and customizable when I'm on the road. I have some food allergies so I aways go for the build your own version so that I can shy away from things that are trouble for me. Love how it gets chopped up and dressed so that you don't have toppings and dressing piled on top of a mound of lettuce that wound be impossible to stir through! The chipotle dressing is nice and spicy and they ask you how much you want so you can set the heat level too. The sea salt caramel is a lovely sweet bite at the end! First let me say I'm a huge fan of the chopt franchise and for a time frequented this location. The last two times I ordered salad from them, the meat was bad (first time, it was the turkey, second time it was the chicken). Outright foul. Given that this location has a history of giving food poisoning to its patrons and suffering a closure from the health department, I expected them to be militant about preventing that from happening. The chicken didn't look like much, so much lettuce, too little dressing.... BUT! It delivered. I was happy. This place definitely exceeded my expectations. It's in a convenient location right by Metro Center, and seems to be one of the few things in the area open on Sundays (I had spent the previous 15 minutes tugging on the locked doors of the National Place food court, alternately peering inside and wailing in despair, and then watched some lady do the same thing). Anyway, back to the topic at hand (or mouth, rather), I ordered the Caesar salad sandwich with chicken, and I soon found out that "Chop't" really is an appropriate name - they chop everything into the smallest bits you can possibly imagine. I actually really like this idea, and next time I may even venture to a salad instead of a sandwich, since my least favorite part about eating salad is awkwardly shoving huge lettuce pieces into my mouth (and sometimes missing, to the amusement of everyone around me). In this regard, I love that Chop't leaves no room for Salad Consumer Error. I would highly recommend ordering from the Chef-Designed menu (i.e., the pre-defined items), since it seems like you get more for your money that way. Adding ingredients a la carte can definitely add up in a hurry. I'll undoubtedly be hitting up Chop't more often in the future. read more

One of the best parts of life is when your impression of something is overturned for the better. When most people think 'salad', they quite naturally think 'unsatisfying,' because most salads are, and when it comes to food, connotations like that are very hard to change. Chop't is amazing because it completely contradicts most people's experience with salads. It is difficult to imagine any clearer or more immediate evidence that salads can be delicious and filling than what you will get here. You might leave saying, 'okay, that salad was satisfying, but salads in general aren't,' but you won't leave saying 'yeah that was like any salad, totally unsatisfying.' The key is the immense--truly immense--variety of ingredients. It gives you incredible control. You can make it sweeter or heartier or fruiter or nuttier, you can get some fix you're craving in an otherwise healthy format, or you can try something new in a way that doesn't make it necessarily the main thing. The dressings are also interesting and make a huge difference, so the possible combinations are just enormous. Chop't is really a ringing endorsement for vegetables in general. The downside is seating. Despite a good number of seats, this location is usually packed. If you can take it to go, do so. Also avoid the drinks, which are not particularly worthwhile in my opinion. My advice for the salad-weary is to go here and try one of the prescribed options, whichever looks best. Then I would start replacing parts of it one at a time, branching out or adding things you know you like. Over time you'll settle into new patterns and get to experience a wide variety of new things. Everything can be added or avoided completely, so there's really not much to be afraid of--just give it the opportunity to change your mind.* * Also happens to be true of most everything in life. read more

Why this place is always so busy for lunch is a conundrum to me. You can get salads nearly anywhere- why pay nearly 10 dollars for salad here that is 97% lettuce? My chop't salad container was overflowing with lettuce and I felt GRATEFUL to stumble upon a non-green leaf in my bowl. What a feeling of happiness when my fork speared a tomato, or the rare shrimp. The huge portions are also not an appealing sell- am i going to eat my salad leftovers for dinner when a) i've already had a salad for lunch and I need more sustenance and b) the salad was tossed in a vinaigrette at 12 pm and by 6 pm will be a soggy mess? No thanks, Chop't. That's one less customer in your ridiculously long lunchtime lines. read more

Man I'm a addicted to Chop't salads. They have these spicy ones on the menu (the best of which was just removed because it was too spicy). That stuff is like crack! Here's how it works: pick a salad base or design your own base. I always pick a pre-designed base. The salad tech puts it on a cutting board and starts chopping it up until you tell them to stop. Then you select a dressing. Even if the salad as a recommended dressing, you can always choose another one. The salad person mixes the salad up in a big metal bowl with all of the dressing and then he puts it into a plastic bowl or a porcelain for-here bowl, depending on what you want. You can get a drink at the register (Boylans fountain sodas) and they offer you warm pita bread wrapped in foil. The bread isn't very good, just something to break up the monotony of chowing down on salad. The restaurants typically have some chairs and stuff to sit on, but I wouldn't call them nice. It's minimalistic decorations and most of it is cheap materials that are selected to decrease the build cost of the restaurant while being decorative. It's about 80% effective in avoiding showing the cheaper architectural design, which is to say that the place is comfortable but not really that nice. There is no parking, no idea about internet. I always like a chop't salad. You gotta pay attention though to what they're doing to your salad, lest you end up with a less than stellar experience. I ordered the salad with the corn, avocado, onion straws, and spicy chipotle dressing. I also added chicken and a large fountain drink. Damage? $13.00. That sucked! But next time I'll not add chicken and save the three bucks. And it still would have been good. Some of the dressings can be way too mild, so that you will not taste anything...not the case with the spicy chipotle option; it's flavorful, rich, and somehow fatfree! Though the salad was a bit pricy, it's the best takeout salad I've ever had. No joke. There was a long line the Thursday before labor day; I shudder to think what the lines will be like in September. One thing that seems to hug a lot of people I know is that these "build your own" salad places seem more expensive than they ought to be. Once you come to terms with the fact that, unless you get a reaaally basic salad, you're going to be looking at $7.5-11, it makes it much easier to rationalize between different chains. Enter: Chop't Chop't is the place to go if you value volume and options over organic and local. The toppings may not be sourced the same way or seem as fresh (and some of the fancier items you'll find at Sweet Greem or Sweet Leaf are absent), but I have consistently found that that's counterbalanced by there being more overall ingredients and your end-meal generally being a little bigger. I'm a big fan of the chickpeas, cherry tomatoes, and quinoa (not as good as Sweet Green's warm quinoa) , and definitely recommend the Mexican Goddess and (at least temporarily discontinued) chili-lime dressings. Per most downtown restaurants, avoid coming during lunch hours if you don't like lines, and DEFINITELY get a couple caramels at the register. They are melty, salty, and delicious. Yeah, it's expensive, but when was the last time you actually craved eating salads? You don't win friends with salad. Ah, but the salads here are addicting, I think I could eat here everyday for lunch and that would be alright with me. Top salads are the grilled Asian, Kabob Cobb, Monterey and the Turkey BLT... The magic is that you get all the flavors in every bite - maybe I should pulverize all my food from now on? I wish I had that soda fountain at my house too, the diet black cherry cola is amazing! But it's annoying that it is so fizzy it takes forever to fill the cup to the top. It's great for salads and all, but its still just lettuce and dressing. They don't even put that much stuff in it. Its mostly greens and fatty dressing. Then they cut it up in front of you, make you feel like getting your lunch is going on a ride, and then slap a $9 price tag on it. I have no problem with it; its low key and fun and therefore makes a great stop for some of the lunch crowd. But I wouldn't go back. I can make my own salad for better and cheaper than that. I used to love Chop't, but then they made a few changes that changed my overall opinion and I started noticing small annoying things. First of all, the new menu lacks pretty basic items for a salad like fresh onions and fresh grated carrots. Secondly, the format of the new menu is confusing and makes it difficult to tell how to build your own salad and how much it will cost. That can add up fast because the place isn't cheap and things like avocado and arugula cost more. This is understandable but it's kind of crazy to leave with a salad that cost almost $13. Thirdly, the dressing system is poor and makes it tough to get the right amount. They don't use any measuring devices and just spray it on out of a bottle until you say to stop, meaning sometimes you get barely any and sometimes dressing is all you can taste. I stared ordering my dressing on the side but that should be standard in my opinion. I could overlook the cost and long wait times at Chop't if I was able to build a salad with any items I wanted that was really delicious. The overall vibe (the hum of reggae overhead) and underlying eco-friendly, pro-sustainability principles just make me feel better about myself. But, choose wisely for this place is hit or miss. The lighter dressings are almost flavorless (maybe it's just me). 'Twas an afternoon during the snowpocolypse and all through the city, we searched for a spot to put food in our belly. With two feet of snow the outlook was bleak, For two marooned out-of-towners with nothing to eat. But then we found Chop't and it made everything better. Seriously though, my husband had driven 10 hours to DC to look for apartments (new job), only to get blizzarded into the city. We thought we were leaving that crap in Indiana. Hmmph. Luckily we had a Jeep so we found a few places to look at - but when it came time for food we found everywhere pretty deserted. Chop't, however, was open, and I had a really fantastic variation on a cobb salad that was almost as big as my head. It was delicious. I think I liked it because the way they prepare the salad I didn't have to try to ration my toppings to avoid getting stuck with a bunch of plain lettuce at the bottom. It was very cool that after a long day whipping up salads for all sorts of people that the employees still had plenty of energy to explain the process of ordering a chopped salad & had fun doing it. Hand-held salad? Yes, please! I am a huge fan of Fresh & Co. in NYC, mainly becuase I love my salad chopped into tiny little pieces. Chop't does that too AND! They will encase it all in a big ol' wrap so that you don't even have to use a fork. When I asked how spicy the ancho chili chicken is, one of the servers gave me a sample. And, even though I was very indecisive about what to order (too many choices!), he did not rush me at all. People behind me who knew what they wanted were just ushered to the next server. Solid place to get your veg on! I was craving a salad and Chop't saved my life =) There weren't that many people inside when I arrived so I was able to walk right up and order. I ordered one of the special salads they had that day which included spring greens, quinoa, avocado and a bunch of veggies (onion, carrots etc). Unfortunately they didn't have any avocado!! I thought this was weird because it was prime eating time and they hadn't been open for that long but the lady offered to add a different ingredient to my salad to make up for the lack of avocado, so I chose tofu. This is no secret among my friends that I love Chop't!! Ha - I make friends and family go here all the time. I actually ate here 3 times in one week a few weeks back ;-) The lines are long, but don't let that deter you - they move fast! Seriously, it goes so fast that it's almost overwhelming. The first time I went I was nervous to order because I felt like there was a ton of pressure...lol! But, after I got the hang of it....look out! I mix my own salad and get all my favorites in it. So, I can't comment on the pre-arranged salad mixes from personal experience. However, I can tell you that my friends have ordered pre-arranged and been happy. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE that they offer the "spa" dressings. These are lower calories and less sugar. I am in love with their Spa Asian and Spa Ranch is not bad either. Possibly they could put more protein in the salads, for instance, I got their turkey last time and I felt it was not a ton once the salad was all made. However, you might be able to order double. I was excited to try it today, to bring it on the train. Since I wasn't going to be eating it until later tonight, I asked for the dressing on the side. The maker, immediately started to pour dressing in, then stopped. My dressing was poured into a cup, then the tossing started again. I had to stop it again. It's dinner time, so we just started eating the salad. Unfortunately, the watery wilted lettuce is filling the bottom. I don't find any avocado and the dressing is supposed to be blue cheese, but it's super spicy and burning the roof of my mouth. I like spicy, but it tastes more like sesame oil with hot chili. I've tried the Grilled Asian (I loved the combination of ingredients but I wasn't a fan of the 5 Flavor Asian dressing) and the Santa Fe (the heat of the pepper jack cheese is my favorite part) - I prefer the wraps to the salads. I must say, the chill reggae tunes throw me off a bit, but it goes along with the casual environment. The Good: Great variety of really fresh ingredients and what's more surprising to me is the selection of dressings - the recommendations are helpful, too. The Bad: For me, salads are usually heavy on the calories but not overly filling, but for what it is Chop't is a satisfying lunch. Overall: The Frequent Chop'r card is a must! Buy nine salads, get one free with other freebies along the way - ten salads may seem like a lot but it's certainly the way to go, especially if you go with friends. read more

First time trying this place out and I love it. I love real salads. You won't find Iceberg lettuce here. Fresh ingredients, large portion for a decent price. You can choose from a plethora of their own salad creations or you can build your own salad. Really enjoyed my salad (I got the Mexican Cesar with Chicken) and will return whenever I am in Union Station. However, what I did not enjoy was the extremely slow service.
