I hate writing reviews like this because Chow has always been one of my local Clinton gems. Fun servers, excellent pizzas, fresh salads, and a welcoming vibe kept us coming back for years. Over the past few years, the service has steadily declined. The food was still good enough that I overlooked it and kept returning. Eventually, the consistently clueless service pushed us to switch to takeout instead. Tonight, sadly, I realized the Chow I once knew is simply gone. The pizza was a perfect example of cost cutting at the customer's expense. It cost more, had noticeably fewer quality ingredients, and was almost completely lacking the flavor that made it special in the first place. I'll choose to look at this as a positive. Connecticut's shoreline has no shortage of excellent restaurants, and this gives me a reason to explore more of them. The successful restaurants today understand that repeat customers come from the combination of attentive service, great food, and a warm, inviting atmosphere. Unfortunately, Chow lost their way and seems to have forgotten that. read more

Ordered a Margherita pizza, which was supposed to have fresh mozzarella according to the menu. When I got it home, it looked and tasted just like a plain cheese pizza with tomatoes--no sign of fresh mozzarella anywhere. If that was fresh, they might need a new vendor. Taking a drive down to the Connecticut coast during the dead of winter with ocean winds blowing in the air sounds like a bad idea, right? MAYBE. Unless you're taking that drive to checkout Chow Food & Beverage. A dining atmosphere that makes you forget its January with a cozy barn vibes on the outside and sophisticated but casual dining on the in. Chow Food is probably the best kept unwrapped present for all you Clinton Outlet shoppers (although I didn't come here for that). Located LITERALLY 1 minute from the outlet entrance. Chow Food is set back from the road and is housed within a big red barn looking establishment with a large wood burned sign that says "chow." When I walked in, I was surprised to find so many different seating options given the shape of the building. I was worried that it wouldn't be ideal for my daughter and me, but we were able to be tucked to the right after walking into a separate dining area away from the bar. The food here is DELICIOUS. We started out with a [Chow] fries, which come in a metal bucket that's served on a wood platter (for sauces). I opted for the Chipotle Aioli dipping sauce. The fries were tossed in a dry rub for a unique taste. Once those were gobbled up, out came the main event. My daughtered orderd a small cheese pizza, and I ordered by recommendation the Raging Bull sandwich/burger. You get to choose your protein. I decided on a chicken cutlet. When it arrived, it had a melted cheddar, pickled jalapenos, red onions, and Chipotle ranch dressing. YUM. I opted for a side of Mac and Cheese to see the quality of Mac. And it did not disappoint. This was no EASY MAC. It arrived in a mini skillet and was ready to spoon out. The service was quick. Attentive. And it was everything you could want from a January afternoon. Warm and inviting. I stopped by for a late lunch with my sister during the week. I can't remember what my sister got, but I ordered the Tarred and Feathered - fried chicken with pickled jalapeño tartar sauce and melted cheese - with a side of fries. I LOVED my sandwich. Firstly, the ambiance here is New England. If you're from here it'll feel like home, if you're not, you get the New England experience. The food exceeds expectations. My new favorite spot! I've been meaning to try this place out for years now, because my friends have always raved about the cocktails and martinis! I finally met my girlfriend for some pizza, brussels sprouts and cocktails, and we had a blast and loved everything! I've actually returned three times since, in the last couple of weeks! They have a pretty good range of items on the menu. Higher priced items and a little more upscale. We sat at the bar, but there were plenty of families dining at tables around us. The staff was attentive and service was good. Pizza was okay, but those brussels sprouts with Parmesan cheese and pancetta! Oh my! We came here last Friday night for dinner and luckily it wasn't too busy due to the holiday weekend. The place was well decorated for the holidays and they had special holiday cocktails that were awesome - especially the adult Shirley temple. We shared maple Sriracha wings that almost didn't need dressing but there was no way we were passing up the homemade gorgonzola dressing. And still has that ridiculous menu title of "tarred and feathered" chicken - I mean come on - be aware of the historical context of this phrase! We were worrying about the parking situation because we have a long bed 4-door truck. Much to our surprise parking was easy. Going inside the charming restaurant we were greeted warmly and seated. The waitperson came quickly, taking drink orders, and laying out the specials, including desserts. When she brought the lovely old fashioneds, cider, and iced tea, she took our orders. When the food arrived it was plated very well. And let me tell you -- every single dish was spectacular! I had shrimp n polenta cake. Ordered their chili and a pizza. The chili was just warm when it was served, so we sent it back to be reheated. When it came out the second time, it was better, but hot really hot. It also was very very spicy. My friend could not eat it because it was too spicy. I ate mine and enjoyed it. The meat in the chili was in big chunks and flavorful. The one thing I left bothered by was the server asked us if we wanted more bread with one of our appetizers. We said sure but come to find out we were charged extra for the bread. I'm sure it's bc it was sliced sandwich thin. I subbed pulled pork for short rib and was underwhelmed. Nothing tasted like they season their meat and they may over cook it. I like my bbq to be able to be ate without bbq sauce and falling apart. the sauce shouldn't carry the meat nor have to be drenched in it. The ambiance was cozy and friendly. The menu displays an impressive range of traditional BBQ and BBQ inspired infusion; we ended up getting the Figgy Pop and the WTF ; their ingredients may seem to be ambitious and even overly decadent, but actually works very well while being balanced. Unfortunately, very disappointing. We loved the old Chow and were sad when it switched over to Italian but wanted to give the new Ciao a try. The menu really is not Italian, not sure what it is? Thankfully they left most of the pizzas on and they were good as always. I ordered the pulled pork sandwich hoping it was the same delicious one from the previous menu. It was not, the pulled pork had the texture and temperature characteristics of food that was frozen and reheated in a microwave rather than freshly prepared or properly reheated. It was very mushy with little taste. I took one bite and left the rest and the server never even asked if everything was ok. It's not top of the charts but also not disappointing. I like the depth of menu. A good stop after a day at the beach. One suggestion for ownership: It's not a great view having the dumpster in the front parking lot with the outdoor dining. TLDR: Amazing atmosphere and even better BBQ Just went to Chow for a quick bite after shopping at Clinton Outlets and it has to be some of the best BBQ in CT. The food was so good I completely forgot to take a picture until half way through the meal. I ordered the pulled pork sandwich on gluten free bread and not only was pork PERFECT, but it was some of the best gluten free bread I've ever had. The Chow fries are also a must have. We also had the ribs and they were to die for. I can't rave enough about Chow and I will definitely be coming back! This is a wonderful place. Arrived on a Friday around 1 PM for lunch. There was a nice crowd. They have plenty of beautiful outdoor space to eat, but as the fall chill arrives the option is to sit inside seating did seem a little tight but for this food and the quality of its staff, I would've sat on someone's lap Cheeseburger egg rolls were a nice surprise exceptionally crisp very tasty with a wonderful dipping sauce. The mac & cheese with the pulled pork was excellent in terms of both components. The mac & cheese was delicious and creamy very tasty and the pulled pork was clearly smoked and juicy the french fries were also very good but we're elevated by the goat cheese Dipping sauce, which is not to be missed. We also ordered a glass of sangria, which was made even more perfect served in the glass about as big as our heads. They had a number of special cocktails for the day, which was a nice offering. The staff was very friendly if not a bit busy as we had to waive down our final check, but there's nothing wrong with being busy, wonderfully polite interested in our comments on the food and friendly. We did not have the hamburgers, but I will tell you they looked awesome, were plated well devoured by their guests. The pizzas that went by look like Connecticut bar style pizzas. The waitress said there were a number of really good ones. We may try those what will be a number of memorable returns to this location. read more
