This was the worst lunch I have had in a long time. I am a huge chowder fan and the chowder was absolutely terrible. Tasted like water and flour. I ordered a shrimp melt which was a huge let down. It was literally bread, sliced (probably fake) cheese and some shrimp. Absolutely no sauce of any kind. I have never had a shrimp melt without some kind of sauce. When you have "chowder"in the name of your restaurant, you should have good chowder. This was pitiful. There were 2 pieces of clam in the whole bowl and a few minuscule pieces of potato. I asked the waiter if they made their own homemade chowder and he said yes- I am pretty sure that is not true. If it is, they need a new recipe. Had lunch here today and once again, it was fabulous. Ended up having the fish and chips with not 1, but 2 cups of chowder. Hand's down the best chowder I have had. I have had Mo's and this stuff makes Mo's look like thin soup. We were looking forward to going here because we have been there before - what a disappointment. We waited about 10 minutes to even be acknowledged even though they weren't that busy. We should have taken that as a clue. First, they had a lot of TVs showing football games, and the patrons at the bar let you know they were there to drink and watch football, not a great atmosphere for those just wanting to eat a nice meal. The waitress finally brought menus and took our drink order, but we didn't get our drinks for about 10 more minutes. She said the coffee was fresh but my husband said it tasted bad, and my regular Coke turned out to be diet. Once we got our food - more disappointment. My hamburger was much smaller than they used to serve and it was prefab, it was supposed to have grilled onions and mushrooms on it, and I did see some scant evidence of that - it definitely was not worth the $11.95 they charged for it. My fries were cold, not stale but not fresh. My husband's "cup" of chowder turned into a huge "bowl" and she said we got a free upgrade because she made a mistake. He said it was good and had big pieces of clams in it. The piece of garlic bread was large and pretty good. So disappointed. Our first evening on the coast and we remembered another chowder bowl we had eaten at in Nye Beach. It was great so we thought let's hit this one. Not good. Staff seemed annoyed we were there, there was lady sitting by is with pink hair cussing up a storm with our kids sitting with us. Felt like we were at an old bar. Best chowder on the coast! They have a cute little train that runs on a track above the eating area, and the staff are always really nice. This place gets super busy during rush times, but we've never had to wait more than 30 minutes. You get a ton of food, and their prices are pretty standard. read more

Best chance for good service is between 11-11:30 for lunch, during the summer and spring break. My favorite is the Fish and Salad with a side of chowder. We stopped in for a quick bite to eat before heading back home, and it was delicious! Me and my husband both got the cannon bowl, (large bread bowl with clam chowder) and it was AMAZING. The chowder was great (but I've never had any other chowder to compare it to! It was yummy to me!!) and even the bread was FABULOUS, the perfect amount of crisp but not too crisp on the outside. The cannon bowls don't come with a side of any sort, but with how big they are you really don't need one, but we still wanted to try the fries because we all love our potatoes and like trying different fries everywhere we go. These fries are really quite good. I only gave 4 stars because it was a bummer how EXPENSIVE sides are, I found it almost absurd, but that seems to be a theme around the area. Also, the waitress was VERY kind, but everyone seemed so stressed out, I hope they're alright! Doesn't make me miss working in the food business. All in all we will definitely make this a place to regularly swing by when we come back. read more
