How do you choose a restaurant to eat at in Fisherman's Wharf? There are too many good options. We decided to eat here because of its convenient location. It only has outdoor seating, so it would not be the best place to go on a cold, rainy day. Fortunately, the day I went was beautiful and slightly chilly. I had the garlic shrimp with sourdough bread. It was delicious. The seasoning had more spice than garlic. I thought that was a good thing because some garlic seasonings can be overwhelming. Originally, I had no intention of eating the sourdough bread, but I did because it balanced all the spices from the shrimp. My friend ordered the crab chowder bowl. She said it was good, but not the best clam chowder in the world. It looked good, but I don't know how it compares to the chowder bowl from Boudin. We wanted to try somewhere we'd never been while walking the wharf. One side of the hut is a walk up order and seat yourself. The other side has servers and a bar. We ordered a couple things including an idea which was free refills. Probably the best part of the meal but not enough for us to go back. When we ordered and paid, we tried to add a tip to our receipt and the cashier stopped us and said "no only cash" ok- so no tip? We didn't have any cash at this point. The food was just ok. Chowder didn't have much flavor and fish and chips weren't anything amazing. We wish we would have stuck to our usual because we know it would have been amazing. read more

Most of the yelp reviews are correct... This is a three-star place. It's conveniently located at the pier in the center of the tourist area. If you're looking for some okay chowder... And some nice greasy fried seafood... This is the place for you. The food we had was not bad... But everything is mostly fried and pretty greasy. So I was a little bit disappointed they did not have more fresh options. Even though I was not busy on the day we win... The service was pretty slow. And because the restrooms attached to this location are public restrooms... They are absolutely disgusting. There are a lot of restaurants and places to eat in the area... This place is really good for its garlic shrimp. They are the reason I go here aside from the fact the employed are rude. I understand that you can't bring outside food in but to try to kick me out right when I walk through the entrance is just straight up mean... I was literally ordering to go! Review only for whole fresh crab, haven't eaten anything else from here. If all you want is a hot cracked crab, literally, this is a good place for a very San Francisco touristy snack stop. Wine/ other alcohol and other menu options are extremely limited. It's just a little round hut with picnic style seating all around outside so the ambiance is not quite romantic or "nice", but it's better than trying to walk while stuffing your face with messy crab. I'm a really big fan of clam chowder and their chowder, in my opinion, taste the same as the other stands that are surrounding them, but a little creamier. Also, their sourdough bowl bread is amazing! I also tried the fish tacos, which I wasnt really a big fan of. It was very tasteless and the cabbage just felt a little off on the tacos. On the place, this restaurant is in the middle of Fisherman's Wharf and I believe it is indoor and outdoor restaurant. I stopped here a couple of Monday's ago for lunch with three other dining companions. We were looking for a place to eat on Fisherman's Wharf and stumbled upon the Chowder Hut while walking around. This particular location had some outdoor seating surrounding the main hut which about half of the seats being under shelter. The day that we were there it had rained earlier in the morning and so half of the seats were covered with water. However the seats underneath the cover all seemed to have heat lamps generating a large amount of heat over them which was a problem since it was already a warm day. After searching almost the whole way around the restaurant we finally found one a table that was not wet which had a heat lamp that was not cranked up. For lunch I decided to go big and got a clam chowder in a bread bowl and also a spicy fish sandwich. I was excited to eat the clam chowder and bread bowl as I had been told that it was something that I needed to do while in San Francisco. However I was very disappointed in this clam chowder as it was not anything special. I figured that it was have more taste seeing how we were on the wharf. The bread bowl itself was fairly good but then again it is pretty tough to mess up bread. My spicy fish sandwich was similarly disappointing as I did not taste much spice at all. It was a fried fish that tasted pretty decent but I ordered the spicy fish as I wanted a little flavor to it. The french fries that came with it were decent too but nothing special The bottom line for me is that I would probably not stop back here again in the future. Such an awesome place! Great bar. good service. Rick from Virginia was our server, really nice guy. Kept our Bloody Mary's coming and checked on us constantly! The restaurants on pier 39 are all expensive, uptight, and snooty. This place is a genuine San Francisco gem. I really enjoyed drinking here! There was live music not to far so we could enjoy the sounds on the outdoor patio. Love this place! I will definitely come back and visit next time I'm at Fisherman's Wharf. You would expect more from a place named "Chowder Hut.." First the good parts. Even though it was a busy day in a busy area, we managed to get our order in with little wait time in line. Choosing was easy because they have all menu items prepared and displayed in front of the windows. In addition, there was enough seating around to people watch. Now, the bad part....The FOOD!!!! I didn't see the Campbell's can or can opener, but I'm pretty sure this chowder was not made from scratch. If it was, Campbell's needs to look into it. The sourdough bread bowl was wayyyy better than the actual chowder. No wonder, the bowl came from the Boudin SF bakery two buildings over. At almost $8, I would expect more from a clam chowder from a "chowder hut". P.S. don't bother with the surrounding seafood stands either. Everything is over priced and flavorless. I wasn't expecting anything from this place since it's a touristy area, surprisingly the Original Clam Chowder was really good in my opinion! It's not small but definitely very busy, you get to find your own seats when entering the restaurant, you can choose to do self-serve, or serve by the restaurant on the other side. We picked the latter. Servers were busy but they tried to accommodate. We had cocktail drinks (Strawberry Mojito and Sweet Racing Day), both really good if you like strawberry. As mentioned, we had Original Clam Chowder with Boudin sourdough bread bowl, and it exceeded my expectation. If you are an expert of Clam Chowder, don't take my word for it LOL. Came here to try the Sourdough clam chowder bread bowl. I loved the bread the clam chowder was served in. It was delicious. The clam chowder was fine but it was the bread that stood out for me. If you get a soda here it's free refills. My boyfriend just had their cheeseburger here. It's usually busy here so it's hard to find a seat so I recommend someone orders while someone else find a seat. Stumbled onto this restaurant basically because it was the first place we walked by and we were starving. This was our first stop during our weekend in San Francisco. It is pretty casual, first come first seat. Even though we were outside at 4:00pm it was actually pretty warm with the cool breeze. They do not have their own restroom so plug your nose if you have to go, you have to use the public restroom next door. The waitress was really nice sand the burger and fries was actually enough to feed our 11 year old and 8 year old. Hot chocolate hit the spot for our kids and the beers..at $4.50 per, went down twice as nice. My daughter and I had the clam chowder bowls and quite honestly, I have to say, at almost $10 a bowl, should have had way more inside of it. The spicy fish sandwich was good and served with fries. For the price though, I would expect more. Try going along the beginning of Fisherman's wharf for more bang to your buck. read more

The boyfriend and I stopped by here one night when looking for a reasonably priced meal down by the wharf. Short, simple menu which was just fine with us! There are two sides. A walk up service and a sit down full service. We just decided to walk up and order ourselves. Considering we were right by the docks, it's understandable but still a little off putting. We ordered the clam chowder, grilled fish tacos and half a pound of their peel and eat garlic shrimp. Clam chowder- this wasn't the best chowder around but was ok. It was a little on the fishier side for my taste. Some yelpers said theirs was all potatoes and chowder with no clams but I disagree! It tasted pretty clammy to us! Fish tacos- came with cabbage, onions and a sriracha cream sauce. The menu says it comes with avocado but I didn't realize until the end of the meal that it didn't even come on it, so I wasn't able to ask for them to add it. Again, these were ok. I'm not sure what the fish was but it was super dark. Usually I'm used to white, flakey fish in fish tacos but this was slightly different. The taste wasn't bad at all but I've had better! Peel and eat shrimp- extremely hard to peel but the taste was delicious! This was our favorite part of our meal! Would consider coming back to try the fish and chips or the spicy fish sandwich but if you're looking for chowder, you could probably get better elsewhere! read more

Ask the manager in the kitchen why my burger looks well done and dry and just gave me the look. Came to this place because it was right across from our hotel. The place has a nice feel to it and luckily we went right when it opened. I don't want to imagine that place packed because it would be insane to get around all those chairs. The food was good but nothing over the top. The service was great considering we were their only customers at the time. It's definitely worth coming to if you need a quick bite to eat. There's also a walk up window for a quick grab and go. Customer service: 0/5. Waiter took long to notice us. Took long to get our orders. Took like 25 min just to get our food. Took another like 30 min tol we see him again. Took him about 15 min just to split the check and he wasn't happy about splitting the check. He told us it was our fault we didnt tell him we wanted split checks even though he should've asked in the first place. The other waiters kept bumping into my arm as they walked by and never apologized too. We tried to ask the other waiters for our food and check, but they would ignore us and say "you gotta talk to your waiter". Food: 2/5. Nothing special. The clam chowder bowls couldve been filled to the top with chowder like the other places around do. The crab melt was good, but definitely not worth 14$ and it came with only like 10 frnech fries. My friends got the crab chowder and they weren't so impressed as well. The garlic fries were good though. My friend got the special shrimp that was pricey and he said it wasn't worth his money. This place has 200 people going in and out and is very disorganized. A chowder bread bowl is a chowder bread bowl and the rest of the menu is just average. But you come here to enjoy the table and chair while you eat and people watch the tourists. The cost here is about 2 dollar more than the food you get at the food stands for the same thing.
