This is a great place to eat if you are low on cash or on a strict budget. We ordered a 12pc crrrunchy chicken and a party tray of palabok for only $21.87. This filled a family of 6 and we still had plenty of leftovers for the next day. The food of course is not going to be the best but for the value it is worth every penny. The tapa and bangus is bomb and beats other filipino breakfasts hands down with the price of $5.99. LOL, at most fast food restaurants on their breakfast menu what can you get for that price and be satisfied. Updated: This place is now not worth going to anymore. So my dad just literally came home with 2 orders of chicken won ton soup and I opened it up to mix in the soup and won tons and to my surprise I FIND A HAIR MIXED IN WITH THE WON TONS! I had gone for a quick meal around 7:30pm and ordered the fried garlic chicken plate and they ran out of the garlic chicken so I asked if they can instead substitute it for the crunchy fried chicken and they said sure but I have to pay extra. wha?.. As I was approaching my turn to order, the cashier had me wait a good 2 minutes until she asked if she could take my order. Lot of stuff to say here. Unfortunately not all of it good. So where to begin? Well, in any instance, I usually avoid places near closing time. On this evening I rolled up at 8:30p. According to the Chowking signage, the place closes at 9:00p. I usually do this out of courtesy as being a working stiff in customer service back in the day, I know it sucks to be held back by last minute customers. Do keep this in mind for the extra star. At the same time, I think either the supervisors or the GM may have to re-think their policy or customer service strategy as it was really appearant that the employees where both rushing to clean up while serving customers. That said as a reminder to this or any establishment, when customers are present, that doesn't mean you shut down operations. Closing time doesn't mean quitting time. It means you need to figure out how much time after the last customer leaves, that your employees don't look like incompetents while serving the public. Get my drift? At the same time, just because the person behind the counter is getting frazzled doesn't mean they can't do their job. It means that you don't have to be a douche bag and maybe you should reconsider eating somewhere else. So after a short wait, I leave with my to go order of fried chicken, gravy, rice and spaghetti. This is where it doesn't get so good. Chicken: Breast meat and drumstick. Very small pieces. Crunchy yes, but greasy. Flat taste if any. Gravy: Salty brown gelatinous goo. Good thing they served it up in a plastic ketchup thingy. We'll leave it at that. Rice: Not cooked very well. Grains are too seperate. This is the white man's rice. Spaghetti: Now I like Filipino 'spaghetti' with hot dogs and ketchup and all. This version I do not like. It wasn't sweet, but sort of watered down tomatoey. Also missing requisite hotdogs. Truthfully, a generations worth of dead Italian grandmas are probably rolling in their graves with the Pinoy version of Spaghetti. But its a beloved version enjoyed by a many Filipino households and if you look at it, its a salute to the Pinoy love of western culture. Besides if you've ever seen that Kraft commercial about American cheese and how it stacks up against the Swiss ('well at least our cheese doesn't have holes in it') you can pretty much muster a sense of humor about Filipino spaghetti. So the other grind I have is not specifically with Chowking but with any Philippine based business that provides customer service to the public. Can we stop with 'Hello ma'am sir'? Its lame and self disparaging. If male customer steps up to the counter its "Hello SIR". Not ma'am sir. Same if its a lady. Not sure how this came about in the lexicon of customer service, but not only is it self disparaging, but also impolite. So it may look like I did a full out slam on Chowking. But if Chowking doesn't want to be 'Choke King', then I think some improvements in operations, customer service and product are in order. Hopefully they'll work through it and swing it in their favor. read more

I came here on a very warm evening last week at about 8:30 pm. I was told they had HUGE halo-halos and I was really wanting something refreshing. I decided to order dinner for my family here as well. The pictures looked so yummy so I ordered the King Kong #3 (I think that's what it's called, my bad if its not ;-)). It is supposed to include garlic chicken, white rice, sesame balls, shumai and lumpia shanghai. I also ordered, the Supreme Fried Rice, beef asado siopao, Ube Shake and the Halo-Halo Classico. Unfortunately, because it was so late, once the food was ready, I just grabbed it and made my way home. As I opened my king kong meal, I was so disappointed! I had more rice than anything else. Little bitty pieces of garlic chicken that hardly had meat on it, 2 mini sesame balls, 2 mini shumai that looked super dry and NO LUMPIA SHANGHAI! Hello....that's what my kids were waiting for. My daughter started eating her siopao and the look on her face you can tell the siopao was definitely NOT satisfying. She said it was dry and tasted like plastic. Not happy, once again! The Ube shake was ehh. Too sweet for me. But my daughter said it was ok. I didnt think it tasted like Ube. But whatever. Then I finally had my Halo-Halo. Can I say, not impressed???? lol....I've definitely had better. Didn't like what I think were soggy banana chips, barely any coconut and the ube ice cream just didn't taste like ube. When I was sick my husband brought home some Arroz Caldo and I cringed at the thought it wasn't home made!...BUT when I ate it - it was tasty and delicious. I tried to call their phone number for phone order and got a "non business" voice mail, meaning it's a regular home voice message for all the phones when we buy it from the store. Usually, business establishments have their own greetings when the phone is busy. I went to the restaurant ordered spaghetti and asked for the manager at the same time. When discussing with him about the "unprofessional voice greeting", 3 of his female staff at the front desk were laughing at me while talking to him. They were so mean and very unprofessional! The discussion is not even funny and they showed disrecpect to their customers. These staff need to be trained for the correct etiquettehow to handle a good customer service. I was so disappointed how they run their business! Their food is not great, the spaghetti that I ordered has no meat , it's watery and too sweet. But unfortunately we end up waiting for our food for almost an hour... 1. ladies in the front does not smile...(they might thought they are already pretty that they don't need to smile to their customers) 2. i don't get the idea of serving your dessert first, this time we ordered halo-halo, but we wanted to eat our food first before eating our dessert, since our food was late, our halo-halo became SOUP!!!! 3. Since it was soooo long, i made a follow-up for our food then the lady just told me to wait for the sweet and sour chicken for another mins....(when food was serve, the sweet and sour chicken is like only half a cup, that took them more than mins to cook or warm it ?????) 4. I ordered chicken lauriat, but gave me a small pieces of fried pork...but then they serve my chicken but no gravy 5. This is one of the worst fast food restaurant I've visited. Last night we order their sweet and sour pork, fried bangus, fried rice and pansit bihon. The fried bangus was fried in slow heat that you can see how black the cooking oil was.. so gross. The pansit bihon was literally just noodles only. I can't even see any small chopped green vege on the plate. Even worse the fried rice was literally swimming in a cooking oil. Then I order steam siomai but they serve it cold as ice. Well my girlfriend and I were trying to go to "Savory Chicken" which was freaking closed on Easter even though their store hours said they were open on Sundays. So after walking around the same plaza, we just ate here. This is like Filipino fast food mixed with some Chinese items (basic chicken noodles etc). We ordered the 6 piece meal combo which comes with white rice and gravy and choice of side (we opted for one of the chicken noodle dishes; forgot the exact name). I will say this. The manager/owner, whoever runs that place has no freaking clue what she's doing. Everything is discombobulated. The workers don't seem to give a crap and I guess I don't blame them. But I worked fast food before and I always busted my tail but I guess that's just me. For one, the soda machine was broken. Okay crap happens. I asked for water cups and after receiving them, I asked if the water even works. She said, "I'm not sure, don't think so". What's the point in giving me 2 cups if nothing works? My order was missing my noodles! So I had to fix that. The order was "for here" and they basically gave me everything in "to go" boxes. Uhh hello? I need plates man. So I had to flag down another worker who gave me 2 plates. Idiots. The fried chicken had good flavor though, I will admit that. Noodles were average and rice is rice. Oh before I forget, we ordered an 8 piece of lumpia as well, which was decent. I doubt I would go back there b/c the service is just horrible. This restaurant sucks! it does not deserve even an imaginary star :( Their staff is not knowledgeable to handle payments in debit/credit cards, We were charged double for a single order. According to the cashier, she voided the first transaction because my card did not go through because their machine is super sensitive!!! But when I checked my bank, it went through. She collected payment of the bill on another card provided by my friend. It was also charged like mine was. My payment was supposedly voided by her. She promised that it will not be affecting my account but it did. To top it all, she promised that it will be within 24 hrs. I called up after after 6 days and she said it take 3 WEEKS for the amount to fall back into my account because they have to settle their mistake through their Los Angeles head office and to top it all, she said that if the amount has not been credited in 3 weeks I can go back to her and she will give me food /stuff!!!! Okay...I would first like to say...I love Chow King's fried chicken...crispy...seasoned...non-greasy...a black man's heaven because I don't feel guilty after eating it. (calories). Saying that...I must say that the customer service at this place...STINKS...to high heaven. I'm not expert but it does not take 45 minutes to an hour to make chicken...well not unless your catching it...and killing it..first. The price is AWESOME. The food is much better than the American fast food chains (Yes, I'm reviewing this place as a fast food joint and not a real restaurant like some other reviews are trying to do) and way cheaper! I have been trying a variety of dishes here and I'm happy to say each one has been good. I have a pretty diverse palate (and I'm generally very critical) so I felt the need to write a review on a place that seems to have a weak fanbase. I've had a few filipino breakfast combos (tocino, tapa with eggs and rice) all very good. I recently had their fried chicken w/ pancit bihon and also their taho (very yummy!). Their service could be better but I've honestly had worse service at Goldilocks. Typical Filipino place where if you speak Tagalog you get better service. I don't speak it fluently, but I know enough words like "Salamat Po" which means "Thank you" and my effort to speak it gives me better service and good food. Fair warning, this was my first visit to Chow King and only went here on my wife's insistence on checking out the new Filipino Complex off of Landess. Make no mistake, this is definitely fast food. Not gourmet by any means. I ordered the garlic chicken as the pictures on the menu looked appetizing and it sounded like a safe bet. For drinks, I tried the calamansi juice. My wife ordered the beef, braised beef IIRC. Both came with plenty of Rice as well as Bihon noodles. Overall I think the food was just ok. Maybe its just me, but the Garlic Chicken I am accustomed to in other Asian restaurants usually has some sort of sauce or gravy - this one was Deep Fried - and too many bones, not enough meat. The taste hit the spot, but I would have preferred more meat! The Bihon was good, and the Calamansi drink was refreshing this past weekend as it was a blistering 100 degress outside! Will I go there again? Possibly - I am interested in trying out their Tilapia. I am sure we will be in the vicinity as Sea Food City has a lot of items my wife likes.
