Whoa. We weren't expecting such amazing flavor and an exceptionally delicious burger from a literal hole in the wall. We popped in for a quick meal as soon as we hopped off the ferry on Mackinac Island. Walking by, the door was open and the smell of fresh hamburger was spilling out and it pulled us right in. The limited lunch menu was perfect because they made each item so well. I was craving a simple, well-made hamburger and they did me one better by making it the absolute best burger I've had in a while and wedged between a pretzel bun no less. The beef was cooked perfectly and had the slightest char on the outside. The bun was toasted and held together the sloppy toppings of lettuce, tomato, and onion, all so fresh. On the side came potato chips and it's like they knew exactly what I was craving. This is truly a place worth visiting if you want a burger done the way it should be! read more

We ate here for lunch on a Saturday. Surprisingly, we were able to get a table right away, but it was crowded! The restaurant itself is a tiny hole in the wall, so you are up close and personal with just about everyone! At the height of the busy season, I can see this being way too busy to even attempt, but we were in Mackinac at the beginning of the season. I had the Granny Smith Grilled Cheese, which came with a red onion aioli spread that was delicious! (The sandwich typically comes with bacon, but I omitted that) I love apples on sandwiches, but the aioli was the real star of the show! They are primarily known for their burgers, and my husband had a patty melt. He said it was very good. Both of our meals were served with potato chips, which were nothing fancy, just straight out of a bag. The service was very fast, and for being on the main strip, it was really reasonably priced. Argh! Sooooo good! Watching these people work was so fun. We sat at the counter in this cramped (food so good who cares) space and watched the cooks make burger basket after basket like it was their job (it is their job). Hubby got the plain ol' burger and I got the Philly cheesesteak. We cut the sandwiches in half and each had half of the other. OMG!!! The burger on a pretzel bun was sooooo good. Went for breakfast. It was pretty busy but we didn't have to wait. It's small, so be prepared to be a little cozy with the fellow diners. The service was fab. Seriously. I didn't have to ask for a coffee warm up (hallelujah!! Big pet peeve!) and the staff were nice and friendly. All hard workers. We got breakfast but looked at the lunch menu and wished we would have had time to go back for a burger. They sounded amazing. My breakfast was yummy. Just your basic eggs and bacon and toast. Hubby got biscuits and gravy and loved it. It was brown sausage gravy and he's sort of a gravy connoisseur and he gave it a thumbs up! Good food. Great service. Worth a stop! read more

Went to breakfast at Chuckwagon and was not disappointed! Everything was made to order and the food was great! Reminded me of my grandpas cooking when I was a kid. I highly do not recommend this restaurant if you have a service dog we were recently on Mackinaw Island July 4 through July 8 this morning we went to breakfast before getting on the ferry to head back to the mainland and we stopped in at the chuckwagon restaurant, the owner or the manager which is very rude gave us instructions on how to bring our dog into the restaurant such as sitting him under the table and to be carried through the restaurant, which I do not have a problem with. What I have a problem with is after I showed him the service dog papers with his registration card showing that he was registered the owner proceeded to ask me like he did not believe me what is your medical condition for having a service dog. I am a medical professional this is against HIPPA rules a business owner can I ask anyone what's your medical conditions are just like I cannot relay any patient information on anyone in a hospital to someone else. I can report this person if I really wanted to but that's not the point of how I had to bring my dog into the restaurant. My family and I were lucky to walk in to this tiny diner at just the right time- 4 stools at the counter opened up the minute we got there, thank goodness. There appears to be only one table in the back for any party larger than 2, so everything else is counter seating. The people working here are hustling and churning out delicious food fast and hot! I ordered the Chuckwagon special (2 eggs, hash browns, bacon, toast and coffee) and I was so pleased with every bite I took. It was delicious diner food at its best! This is my 4th season on the island and I finally made my way to carriage house to treat myself to a fancy dinner and I was very disappointed. The decor is unimpressive and unimaginative, and the food was just ok. My meal was Cheese tortellini with a fancy name. it was good but definitely not worth the price, you can make it at home better. Brought home a Lemon meringue pie for dessert and I can barely take more than two bites. Again, not worth the price. All fudge shops have better options than the "fancy" carriage house. Pony is better. The Broken Spoke is better. Highly recommend anywhere but here if you want a "high" quality dinner on Mackinac. read more

There are a few places in the world that do something simple and well. This place is all about the burgers, and you should try one. Fresh meat. 1/3rd pound. Challah style egg bun. Whatever you dressed it up with. I tried the Rattlesnake burger, with jack cheese and seeded jalapenos. I don't eat burgers as often these days, but that one was world class. Coleslaw could be a bit drier. The fries were excellent but could have stood a couple more seconds drying before being tossed on the plate. It's served up hot and quickly which should make New Yorkers happy, the few that are smart enough to come out this way for a vacation instead of "the Island" (Martha's vineyard). It's a small place, so if you're a large party you either have to squeeze into available tables or wait patiently for the one in the back. It's right up there with Bobcat Bite in Santa Fe, New Mexico (A must visit too) as one of the top burger joints in the lower 48. Open for breakfast and lunch. read more

The best "Local" place on the Island. I wish wish wish my town had a little diner like this, I would be there everyday. They have a counter and a couple of tables the place is tiny but the food is Big! This is real no frills diner fare. My favorite thing for lunch is the "Black Russian" Smoked turkey, Bacon, Swiss, slaw and 1000 Island on griddled rye...whoo its so so good. The last time my wife had the grilled cheese with apple and red onion aioli...very tasty. Stay away from the crappy tourist places and enjoy some old school atmosphere where you can see where you food is coming from...hes making it right in front of you! Great little burger joint right on Main St. Don't blink or you'll miss it; it's probably the smallest restaurant on the island. There are a few tables and about 10-15 stools at the counter. At first I was skeptical due to the lack of people inside, but it turned out to be a great choice. Our server was a nice, younger, sarcastic girl who took care of us well and had a good attitude and personality. Had a BBQ Bacon Cheddar burger and it was spectacular.
