My favorite place on the island is Mary's Bistro for dinner- the chicken pot pie is to die for. The Chuckwagon is my new favorite spot for lunch! My hubs and I split a rodeo burger. The grill master cooked it to a juicy perfection right in front of us. The BBQ sauce was sweet and the bacon was crunchy thick goodness. Great pretzel bun too. The coleslaw was fresh. We came here for breakfast and lunch on a Tuesday (they are closed on Mondays and for dinner) Breakfast: Amazing! We ordered eggs/hashbrowns/toast/ham and the hashbrowns were the best I have ever had. Hard to describe but the perfect amount of crispy. We also ordered the flapjacks which were our favorite. The outside is slightly crispy but the inside is nice and chewy. Lunch: We ordered the cheeseburger and Bleu cheese burger. The best burger I have ever had! The sauce is incredibly flavorful and meat is perfectly done. Also really enjoyed the bun. Highly recommend getting the slaw and fries for the extra 2.50. Yessss!!! If this place has not been on Diners, Drive-ins and Dives, it needs to be! I think this has got to be number one or two on my list of favorite burgers! It's definitely a "greasy spoon"... Long and narrow, with swivel stools at the bar, and fun 50s advertisements on the walls. Just like a place I used to frequent as a little girl where I would get fountain sodas. Except it had a chuckwagon theme as well. We had to wait about 20 minutes for a seat, but it was more than worth the wait! We found our seats at the bar, ordered and literally five minutes later, we had our burgers! WOW! Fast AND delicious! I wanted to get something that they were known for so I quickly passed over the breakfast and sandwiches ordered a burger. We ate breakfast here last week while on vacation. We sat in the back corner booth with our 3 year old. Get here early in the mornings or else you won't get a seat at all! Unfortunately we snagged a seat right under the AC. When it came on, we were blasted with icy cold air. It blew napkins all over the tables and made our breakfast instantly cold. I ordered the breakfast burrito and it was ok. Nothing special. I would recommend future diners to opt out of the onions in the burrito as they were totally over powering and it was all I could taste! The best best best part of this place were the pancakes and syrup! Those were honestly the best pancakes I've had in a long long time. They reminded me of sourdough pancakes I used to eat growing up! We stopped into the Chuckwagon for breakfast on Sunday, October 16 as a change of pace from the continental breakfast our hotel was serving. We had checked out the menu of The Pancake House and opted for Chuckwagon because of it being right across the street from our hotel and the value received in comparison to the high prices at The Pancake House. Fortunately, we got there early enough to where we had our choice of seating, which ended up being a booth back in the corner. The servers were quick to take our drinks order and had our hot coffee to us right away. My wife ordered the FlapJacks, my daughter ordered the Basic Breakfast and I ordered the Chuckwagon Special. It didn't take long to receive our orders, which was pleasing to our growling stomachs. My wife's pancakes were fluffy and hot when served, which is exactly how my wife likes them. I typically order my eggs over-easy but many times they arrive either undercooked & runny or overcooked with a hard yolk. However, my eggs were cooked perfectly. I opted for the sausage patties rather than ham or bacon and was pleased to find that the patties were not overly salty. Our daughter mentioned that her eggs were cooked perfectly too. Our servers checked on us several times throughout our meal and made sure our coffee cups & water cups were always full. As we finished our meals the restaurant was becoming full as people began to come alive and look for sustenance. However, both servers continued to smile and had pleasant demeanors in spite of the number of customers in a small space. We would highly recommend this restaurant for breakfast and would also recommend the booth in the back corner or, if dining alone, sitting at the counter and enjoy the feel of an old diner restaurant with the cooks performing their craft right in front of you. read more

One of the places I was most excited about checking out on the Island was the Chuckwagon. I mean who doesn't love a good burger place where the locals like to eat? The Chuckwagon has that in spades. The interior is small but comfy. There are plenty of seats to be had at the counter, where you can watch the burgers be grilled on the flattop. And who doesn't love an "I love Bacon" sign? Rodeo Burger ($7.75) 1/3 lb patty, pepper jack, bacon, grilled onions, BBQ sauce I went with the Rodeo, which was prototypically sweet and savory. They don't ask for the desired temp of the burger, which was cooked well-done, but it was properly seasoned and juicy. The BBQ sauce provided the sweet element to the burger, with the onions and bacon adding some savory heft to the patty. The pepper jack gave a spicy kick as well. The Challah roll held all of the ingredients together nicely. All burgers and sandwiches came with some ruffled potato chips as well. Black Russian ($7.50) Smoked turkey, bacon, Swiss, slaw, 1000 Island, grilled rye The GF went with the Black Russian, which had heft from the bacon and turkey. The Swiss cheese and slaw provided a perfectly creamy element to the nicely grilled sandwich. The 1000 Island dressing provided that vinegary tang that makes it all come together. If you're looking for a decent burger or a sandwich in a comfortable atmosphere, look no further than the Chuckwagon. Not only is the burger very tasty, it's just a fun experience. Part of the shtick, I suppose, is that they move so many people through a small and crowded space. We sat at the bar, and it was a treat to watch them work the grill. They just constantly cook burger patties, grill onions and pretzel buns, and fry fries. So you hardly have to wait for your order. The burger size is big, 1/3 lb, and made from fresh beef. It's very tasty, with crisp & fresh & cool lettuce and tomato on a pretzel bun that can hold up to the big burger. Chips are the standard side, Ruffles style. I added on fries and slaw, for $2.49. The fries were good, hot. Slaw was a cold, small cup that was standard diner. I was a bit disappointed by this add on for that much price. I'd give five stars for the fun and the burger, knock off a star for the fries/slaw add on. read more

After asking the bike shop across the street where we should eat for breakfast, we were directed to Chuckwagon. There was somewhat of a limited choice of breakfast, but there should be something for everyone. You have the choices of a regular breakfast (some eggs of your choice, meat and hashbrowns), pancakes, breakfast sandwich and a breakfast burrito. I got the breakfast burrito which had eggs, pepper jack cheese and hasbrowns inside. It was pretty good. It was $9 just for the burrito, and I could barely finish it. It is very small inside and the place was constantly busy. Where we sat, the air conditioner blew right on half of the table, so that half of the table had to move to a different table. I got the rattlesnake burger with fries and I ate it within 5 seconds. So it was more like I inhaled it rather than ate, but I still appreciated all the flavor. I'm having flashbacks to my childhood... to the drugstore counter! First stop off the ferry, and I was hungry. This is what we saw... and this is what we got! A seat next to the door at the counter let my inner squirrel run rampant! I could watch the cook actually handle the patties. Tried the chicken cherry sandwich to go. There was plenty on it and tasted very good. The place is small with only tables for two surrounding a bar to sit at.
