Okay so vegan is popping up more and more on menus. I ordered cauliflower buffalo bites (vegan) once my order was out I asked if they had vegan ranch. The guy literally laughed at me and said why would you want vegan ranch that is nasty. I was shocked. I've gone completely vegan for health reasons. If you offer an alternative from meat, please have an alternative from ranch. Whatever, moved on. But please if you offer vegan cauliflower bites-please keep on hand vegan ranch of some sort. My husband and I walked into Churchkey looking forward to a tasty meal and a nice beer. The sign at the front said seat your self... So we did. We waited 15 minutes. It was busy but not slammed so we were just waiting at our table to order. Then over the next several minutes 3 servers and a bartender passed by our table without even am acknowledgement. No stop by and say "I'll be with you in a moment", nothing. They didnt even look in our direction for me to try to get their attention. Then another couple walked in and were immediately greeted and brought water and menus.. That's when we got up and left. I'm sorry to say that we won't be quick to try and come back. Loved this place! We grabbed pizza after the Christmas parade and it was perfect. Great food and service, cocktails were yummy, pizza was delicious! The small size was too big for one person to finish but awesome for left overs. The cauliflower wings with the variety of sauces are a great way for vegetarians to join in the wing fun! Checked this place out first time a couple days day ago been to the bar to have a beer and dine. Everything to me is well priced and the bartenders are really nice and sociable even when it's busy. So here's the deal. We've eaten here a few times when it wasn't busy. Food was good, service was decent. However, things took a bad turn recently. My daughter is getting married Saturday and my wife wanted to take all of the bridesmaids and Moms to lunch the Friday before. She called Churchkey..... three times. Each time she was put on hold and the person never returned. First time, she waited 5 minutes. Second time, she waited 5 minutes. Third time, they put the phone in the counter and never came back. She decided to see how long this would go on, after 20 minutes she finally hung up. Needless to say, someone else is getting the $300-$500 she had planned on spending. So, if you want to go to Churchkey, go before or after lunch and dinner hour. And never call ahead to prepare them for a large group. read more

I love this place!! The beer selection is great and so is the food. The Bonanza burger has to be one of the best burgers I've had. They don't have fries only tater tots, while at first it was a disappointment, I quickly realized that it truly is perfection with the burger. I desperately want to give this place 5 stars but I can't until they make the Cheddar Jalapeño spinach dip a permanent appetizer, instead of just on the specials list. This is the second time we came here for lunch and our food took at least 40-50 minutes and other customers who sat after us received their food before we did. Most of us ordered salads so we are not sure what happened or if our order was even placed. Both times, we were comped $3 off for the wait. I've been here multiple times and the service has always been very mediocre. Went with my family lastnight, and it was one of the worst dining experiences EVER. Took up to 15 minutes to get our drinks ordered, over 30 minutes to get our food, and we had to chase down our waitress for utensils, plates, and napkins. We never got our appetizers. Everyone got their food and i didn't get mine at all. When mentioned to the waitress she said it was coming and then avoided our table after. When i mentioned it to another waitress she said it wasn't their fault, and that it's the cooks fault and that if they don't want to cook the food they won't - LOL. She was super rude and unprofessional. Finally 40 minutes after everyone got their food i got mine, cold. I didn't eat it. Mine was cold when it came, I can't eat food cold. There's something about cold food that makes me nauseous. So I asked for it to be reheated. It came back cold again. I tried a few bites and gave up because the flavor was horrible too. The chorizo tofu tasted like mashed up toro with a cup of chili powder in it. It was like eating a spoonful of dry chili powder. I haven't written a review in a long time, but today, I felt it was necessary. We have loved Churchkey since it opened and have frequented there for many dates together. We have, however, started to notice a decline in the last several months, mainly in the quality of the food/presentation. The staff remain friendly and helpful, I want to make that clear. I'm just wanting to put out there that the food isn't what it used to be. We even sent a platter of nachos back because the cheese was literally hard, had no meltiness to it, and the chips were totally brown? They gave the exact same platter of nachos back? Nothing was improved? This might seem insignificant, but our last 3 visits have been a mess, with completely different orders and different dishes? We continued to come back because we loved them and like to support local business. Hopefully, management will get the kitchen together. read more

This is mostly petsonal pizzas, salds and burgers..some chicken and veggie burgers too. We parked on the street and only went there one time..so far.andvwe split a pizza and a regular burger. They have some ten dollar lunches that come with a salad and pizza. I thought the burger was outstanding..one of the best I've had because the meat seemed like areal freshly made patty and was seasoned and well cooked plus the sauce was perfect. I could eat those burgers daily. They do serve alcohol there.also you can sit at a partial booth if you prefer that to a chair. And they have those tall chairs. Restrooms are perfect.service is fast and on point. The only reasons i didnt give 5 stars are the limited menu and the wait was very long .i dont think it s common to wait though... Cowboy Cobb was horrendous. A pre grilled chicken breast, dipped in bbq sauce, chopped up with spring mix, bland pickled onions and halved grape tomatoes. But wait - there's more. Honey mustard AND ranch dressing. Horrendous. Upon paying the $100 lunch for 4 people we were walking out and saw a sheet tray of chicken sitting out at room temperature. Wow. Today we showed up after the Peace Officers memorial run. Menu looked great. This place was grossly understaffed considering our team had given you a heads up that there would be 50 of us. To management: you threw out your best servers (to the wolves) today but it wasn't enough. You needed more than 2 cooks in the kitchen (just a suggestion). And at least 3 more behind the bar. All the wait staff were overwhelmed. These poor servers deserve a raise for all the crap they had to deal with today. We gave ours grace but we know they had to deal with a barrage of complaints. Not sure if this place is open during COVID. My family and I waited at the hostess desk for over 20 minutes and no one came to seat us or take our orders for to-go since we decided to just do take out as we were thinking they weren't doing outdoor seating after we waited for so long with no one helping us. There were about 4 workers behind the bar with clear visibility on us and no one came to help us even after raising my hand and asking if anyone can help. This would not have too bad if when asked prior to ordering how long it would be was told, there is no wait and should be right up. Didn't order anything fancy, just some nachos. Other people who had walked in and ordered after I placed an order, received their food before me. Open the nachos and the cheese was not melted all the way and very little chicken. Good & not quite so good!! The service was great!! (FYI: they do add 18% gratuity for 10+ people). The noise level is crazy loud!!! Food: the bacon fajita burger was huge & pretty good. The wings were humongous , bready & too spicy. The donut bites had way too much cinnamon, not enough sugar & were really chewy!! Also- the caramel was burnt. Not my favorite! The pizza was cooked a little too long... it was burnt. This place definitely has the potential to be amazing... but it's just not there yet. Talk about a disappointment. I just moved back to Modesto after 6 years of living in San Francisco, so you could understand my excitement when a cool, new restaurant opens up. I was so excited, that the first week it was opened, I requested that we go to Churchkey for my birthday. The place was busy, not crazy, and our waitress was completely incompetent. Not only was this place out of all of the white wine on the menu but 1, but she brought my friend and father the wrong beer, not ONCE, not TWICE, but THREE TIMES! Once we got the drinks (after about 30 minutes of waiting) we ordered, hoping the food would redeem the place. What we got of what we ordered was delicious, but our waitress failed to bring us half of what we ordered. At this point, we were over it. I went home to write an email to the owner to just make them aware of some of the new restaurant kinks, so I didn't have to publish it on YELP but the email address on the website is invalid. Additionally, most of the important things on the website don't work. What's the point of the restaurant website if you can't make reservations or contact the restaurant easily? I decided to give this place another chance and chalk up the first interaction to first week jitters. So I went back on Saturday after the Nuts game for a beer. It was 9:30, the bar was not full, but there were still people there, and they refused to serve us since it was too close to 10. What kind of place closes at 10 pm on a Saturday, during Graffiti? Additionally, there were still people at the bar, you couldn't serve a beer for us to enjoy for a half hour? I decided to chalk this interaction up to inexperienced bartenders, or staff, or whatever, but strike TWO. Yesterday I had an out of town friend visiting to see a show at the Gallo Center, so I tried calling a few times throughout the day to make a reservation since the website doesn't work to book reservations. I couldn't get through, so we decided to show up at 5:30. This place was actually busy, but it took over 15 minutes to even get acknowledgment from the staff. There was a huge group of people waiting at the door and it's like the staff was avoiding eye contact so they didn't have to help. I literally had to chase a girl who was behind the bar for some help. When she pointed at a table and told me I could sit "over there" I saw the writing on the wall that this place is just incapable of good service, so we went to Raw, where the service was great in a place equally as busy. Like I said, the food that we actually did receive was great, but the service and staff leave nothing to be desired. I think they are banking on a cool atmosphere, but honestly, you could tell me that Beyonce was playing a private show at Churchkey, but I would have to deal with the incompetent wait staff, and I would pass on the opportunity to eat here. And, yet again, I just don't get it. Saw the reviews (4 stars and 130 reviews at the time I visited) and the photos and couldn't wait to give it a try. I'm really getting sick of writing bad reviews. So, I'll start with THE GOOD. Wall of many, many beers on tap. The place is super clean, and pretty inexpensive. Two beers, an iced tea, an appetizer, pizza and a burger came out to $44. Then THE BAD... First off, this place is NOISY. Even half empty. Concrete floors, block or tile walls and a big rounded vaulted ceiling means that the noise just bounces everywhere. I had to repeat every-other sentence I spoke to my hubby, and we were sitting next to each other, and I was looking right at him when I spoke. Really. They were doing a special "Oktoberfest" menu while we were here, and we started with the pretzel served with cheese sauce. The sauce was cold, and was more of a spread than a sauce. We asked for German mustard to go with (they also had bratwurst and other sausages on the special menu, so we figured they had the right mustard, too), but the waitress said that they only had yellow or Dijon. We okayed the Dijon, and then continued to check out the menu. While she was gone, we realized that they serve a homemade lager mustard with one of their burgers, so when the food runner brought us the pretzel, we asked for that. A better choice than the Dijon or cheese. For dinner, we ordered and shared the Go-To pizza and the Killer Queen burger with Brie, braised kale and bacon jam. It wasn't until after we ordered that I realized that the waitress didn't ask how we wanted the burger cooked. It came out well done (but I will say that it was not dry), but that wouldn't have been our choice. Too little Brie, too much kale, and I couldn't taste the bacon jam. (For me, all bacon jam is compared to a gastropub called The Griffon in Niagara, New York. I still dream of that stuff!) the burger also needed something acidic, because everything was so fatty and heavy. Oh, and the sour cream and onion tot sauce was served in one to those tiny little stainless steel pitchers that fancy restaurants use to bring creamer when a single person orders coffee. It was half empty. Hubby used the long toothpick used to hold the burger together to stab the tots and dip them in the sauce. And the tots were under-seasoned. The menu said that they made their own pizza dough, and after being completely spoiled by 600 Degrees Pizza in Georgetown, TX, I was excited to see someone else who actually made their own dough. The waitress said that they made their own sauce, too! Again, looking at the photos of beautifully bubbly dark crusts, I thought it would be awesome. Well, not so much. Please see my photo. This is not the thin crust other reviewers noted. The crust was the same thickness from the edge to the middle, about 1/2 inch. The edge was the same color as the center, and although it was cooked through, I think that either the oven wasn't hot enough, or it didn't stay in long enough, or both. The crust had the texture of a Boboli store bought, the sauce was sour, and I couldn't even taste the saltiness of the prosciutto or the bitterness of the arugula. The lemon was nowhere to be found. Like the burger, the whole thing was just flat. I ate one slice. I saw it on the menu, and wanted to try the maple bacon funnel cake for dessert. After the other dishes, I decided that it probably sounded better than it was, so we skipped it. Bummer. Lastly, THE UGLY... Used the ladies room while I was there. First off, out of paper towels. Went and told someone before using the facilities. Got into the stall, and there was just enough TP for one last use, before that became a problem for the next patron. Seriously... if you have a public restroom, take the time to check it out and make sure it's stocked! (From what I could tell of the towels they bought in, they were either out of the kind that their machine used, or the machine was busted. Either way, you're already aware that there's a problem, so be ready to fix it, not to wait on your guests to let you know!) Bottom line, hubby was surprised by my one-star review, but when I asked whether he'd be back, and what he would order again, he agreed with me.... read more
