My sister in law came to town recently and I just knew she needed to try some true Tex Mex. Chuy's had been recommended to us by friends and the restaurant had great reviews, so we went! Quick summary: great food, great atmosphere, wonderful service! There were so many things on the menu that sounded delicious it was hard to decide. I ultimately went with a big-as-your-face burrito and was not disappointed. The frozen margarita I ordered was great, it just melted a little too quickly for my liking. One thing that's unique: you get salsa, chips and a white dip for free when you sit down. I thought the white dip was queso but it was actually this amazing blend of ranch and peppers. When I lived in Austin, I ate here several times a month. I love just about anything on the menu with the chili gravy. Their chips are always hot and fresh. AVOID this place at peak times unless you want to grow old waiting for a table. It can also get very loud. Try to get a seat by the window. Parking can be tough at this location too. read more

This is my favorite Chuy's in Austin. The atmosphere and people are really nice, and the food...so good. Chuy's is kind of the standard for Tex Mex for me. You'll find great burritos, and the Creamy Jalapeno sauce for your chips is insanely good. I don't care how many calories there are. The reason this location doesn't get 5 stars, is you're going to have parking problems. The lot is completely full during most peak hours (6-9 on weeknights) so you'll be wandering for a bit before you find a spot. People are nice, food is good, and the atmosphere is very eclectic. Totally disappointing every time. Take out was aweful and inaccurate. On another visit the Tres Leches (my favorite dessert) was bad. After 1 bite I was going to toss it out, but my wife figured she would eat it. However after 1 taste, she ended up tossing it out. Can't beat the queso bar during happy hour! It's a free nacho cart that is basically the best thing ever. I ordered delivery through Door Dash that was never delivered. When I called to find out what happened they said I would have to contact door Dash (which we couldn't). They basically blew me off saying there was nothing they could do about it. I asked to talk to a manager who was rude and hung up on me. Contrast this with an order I made from Doc B's. I ordered that from Uber Eats. After the driver dropped off the food I realized there was much of the order missing. I called Doc B's and they contacted the Uber driver and had her come back for the rest of the order to deliver. Now why Chuy's couldn't contact the Door Dash driver to find out what happened to the order is beyond me. They just really didn't care. I dont care if I went through a 3rd party delivery service, I was ordering food from Chuy's. They should be able to handle it if the food isn't delivered, just like Doc B's did. Doc B's knows how to treat customers. Chuy's obviously doesn't. Won't be ordering from there again. read more

Our favorite Tex-Mex in Austin. My usual is the green chili steak burrito. Amazing, with lots of hot green chili, green chili rice and charro beans. Tortillas are fresh-made, corn tortillas are especially good. Rellenos are good, New Mexican enchiladas (stacked blue corn tortillas) are great (be sure to get the fried egg on top). There's a strong New Mexican influence so you can get a lot of good dishes with green chili, or you can get straight up Tex Mex. The wait can be very long (1 hour+) but they have a great outdoor seating area, free chips/salsa and good margaritas. And it's very cheap. read more

Chuy's was one of the first restaurants I hit up when I moved to Austin 27 years ago. I loved the quirkiness of the Barton Springs location with the fish dangling off the ceiling and the homage to Elvis Presley. The sweet and salty taste of that frozen margarita hit the spot after a long week of exams and studying. But it was that Big-as-yo-face burrito that hypnotized me for years to come. Yes, it was big (that's what she said!) but it was the combination of meat and cheese inside wrapped by a handmade tortilla with a kickass sauce on top. I've had them all; chicken, steak, Carne Guisada and they're all effen great. Gotta give a shoutout to the jalepeno ranch and the hand made salsa; both of these are perfect on the tortilla chips. This place is always soo packed! And for a reason. Its always consistently good for us. If you know better, you should come here really early to snag a seat but this time we came for a later dinner and still waited for over 30min because our party was large. We opt to sit outside because the weather was nice and it cut our wait time in half to 30min BUT huge mistake-the crazy Austin weather blew in a cold front and it was freezing! I was fine for some reason but the rest of my party froze their booties off even with the heaters above. The constant wind I guess lol But I still enjoyed the food and company so much! I always get the Comida Deluxe because it has everything I like-tacos, queso, double rice, enchiladas, guac-yum! Even in the cold it was good. I don't know about everyone else but their food looked great and we took home some of theirs and it was still yummy! We especially love their jalapeno ranch dip and salsa and chips-that fills us up way before dinner and it was great while we waited too. Our waiter was efficient and nice, funny too and my kids LOVE their kid's menu the best out of many of the restaurants we frequent. They give alot and their tacos are adult sized tacos-3 of them and their chicken strips are yummo-fries too :) Definitely this is our go to place for tex mex and who cares they aren't 100% authentic-its delish! Went there New Years eve, we ordered the stuffed avocado and it was over loaded with hot peppers that you couldnt taste the food. I love spicy but this was over kill! Since then, I have been singing the praises of the creamy jalapeno ranch. I've been known to get a bucket of it "to go". The place was super super packed, so obviously people dig this place (and who can blame them, I enjoy the menu as well). It is fun to see the regional differences in play, and that was in evidence by the size of the place (they are much smaller in CA - and no Texas joke intended). It was also evident in the aforementioned Texas Martini, which is a top shelf margarita served in a martini glass with jalapeno olives, alongside a shaker full of more yummy margarita goodness. Gimmicky? Maybe. Good? Absolutely.... I sat in the bar since there were so many frickin people (and on a Thursday for craps sake) that I figured it would be forever to get a table of my own and really, I was there for the drinks anyway. A note: in the bar you only get to order off the ful menu if you are sitting AT the bar. Kind of a bummer but ok. Worth the trip, chek this place out. Chuy's is my go to for mexican food most of the time. It's just good Tex-Mex. My husband and I go here, split the Queso Compuesto, some sort of enchiladas (the Chicka Chicka Boom Boom sauce is so good but DAMN is it spicy! I'm a wimp though), and then a dessert. It only costs us about $24 for the two of us to enjoy so many different flavors. Woo! Before I started splitting meals with the hubby I always went for the Chuychanga. Delicious! So much cheeeeseeee! And that jalapeno ranch dip is duh-lish! Service is always hit and miss for me. Sometimes we get a kick as server that makes me want to just throw money at them and then others just sort of...bum me out...as a server, I can be quite critical of other servers but I really only expect the basics. Smile damn you! I guess I'm a little negative on them right now because the past 3 servers have been lame but before they used to always be awesome! Anyway, nearly all the Chuy's are the same and it's always tasty and fun to look at the decor. OH! And you HAVE to try the Tres Leches. That stuff is the sh*t!
