Good Tex-Mex is not always easy to find in this neck of the woods. So DH was happy to hear Chuy's was locating in Richmond. We had heard crowds can be large at peak hours, so DH and I decided to do an early dinner on the weekend. We were promptly greeted, seated and served. The waitstaff was helpful, friendly and provided top notch service. What I liked best is that when you say "thank you", they respond with "You're welcome" instead of "no problem" (a pet peeve). For the food... While I enjoyed my meal (best chips ever, super light and crispy), it was just did not really live up to the hype. Decided to break away from my usual Mexican restaurant and try something new. I visited this location on Broad at 4pm Monday 6/18/18. I absolutely loved walking in and seeing all the vibrant colors!! A very nice gentleman brought our chips and salsa and took drink orders. Then a woman took over helping us. She was just as helpful. So, really good service. I'll start with the chips, they were really good. They were thin with a hint of salt. The salsa on the other hand was too spicy, even for my grandson who loves spicy foods. The male waiter brought us a ranch dip instead and neither of us liked that either. I ended up having to purchase the guacamole, which was good but i didn't like the fact they layered the bottom of the bowl with lettuce. Therefore you don't really get a full bowl of guac as the lettuce makes it appear so. Ok, next...my mango margarita... well. It had too much mango syrup in it therefore it was too sweet. The waiter did offer to get me another one but I declined. I just didn't feel like the hassle. The burrito Bigger Than Your Face was really good according to my grandson. Gema escondida! In the land of Short Pump suburban chain restaurants, Chuy's is a hidden gem indeed. The traditional facade gives no hint to the cool & funky inside decor. Bead board paneled walls covered with myriad paintings, bamboo ceiling, tin palm trees, and Mexican blue and yellow tiles mesh together to create a unique vibe. So after actually ordering something other than the nacho bar I've gotta change my review. I was SO surprised when I received the fajitas dish. You have to see the pic attached. The few strips of chicken and beef was so not worth $15 bucks. Any other mexican restaurant would have had the entire cast iron pan filled for the same price. The rice is dry and has an off flavor. I usually order extra rice at Mexican restaurants but im so glad I didnt here. The refried beans were good. The steak was fatty. Flavor wise it was okay but ive had better at pretty much every other Mexican place in town. The tortillas are made in house but I honestly wasnt a fan. You can really taste the flour. My daughter wanted Mexican and so I randomly selected this place. Service was superb. Our food came out less than 10 minutes after ordering. Large portion sizes and everything was steaming hot. The white sauce that comes with the chips and salsa is delicious with just the right amount of a spicy kick to it. I wasn't impressed with the guacamole. It needed more salt and lime juice. Not recommended for businesswomen entertaining clients, etc. Even though I went early and pulled out my card so the server could see it and even explicitly (and redundantly) TOLD the server I was paying for the group, he still accepted payment from the lone male in our group when the time came. Disappointing since I recommended the venue, having eaten at Chuy's in Austin many times. This was my first time visiting Chuys but I always wanted to try it. We shared their chips and salsa. I ordered custom enchiladas-chicken and cheese with the ranchero sauce. I had it with Mexican cheese instead of the green Chile rice. The dish was OK but I wish I had more sauce and more cheese on top of the enchiladas. I also had two grande margaritas. Definitely my go to spot for spot on Tex-Mex! Their chips and Salsa are on point. Their chips are very thin and crispy and the salsa is very fresh and a little spicy. Also please try their cheese dip too. It's delicious and addicting. Today I had the chicken flautas which are rolled corn tortillas with stuffed with chicken then deep fried and drizzled with a delicious chipotle sauce. Served with their version of Spanish rice and refied beans. I would give it a 10 out of 10. Chuys take on Tex-Mex is an absolute delight and everything I've tried there has been great. The decor of the restaurant is very interesting with a room filled with hubcaps from vintage cars and pictures of people throughout the ages. Pretty good Mexican food for a chain. There chips are light and crispy and the food is cooked pretty well. I normally get the combo fajitas, steak is hit or miss as well as the chicken. The price points aren't too bad and the service has been consistently good. Very tiny parking lot but they do have complimentary valet. You can also just park in the parking garage adjacent to the restaurant if you like. I've been on a Wednesday night and it was fully packed and a Thursday night where it was pretty empty. It's fun to watch them hand make the tortillas as well. Disappointing dinner experience tonight. Arrived at 7:30. We ordered drinks and apps. Had to ask for app plates, napkins and salt and pepper. Our server, Jennifer, asked if we were ready to order and I asked if we could have a couple minutes. It was 7:42 and she informed us that we needed to make a decision soon because the restaurant closes at 8 and if we don't have our order in the kitchen by 8, they will not prepare any food. We quickly ordered our food. Ordered 3 chicken tacos which were oddly served on 3 individual plates? Anyway, chicken was cold. My husband ate one and just left the other two. Food always comes out fast. It's fresh and so good! The chips are amazing they're thin and hot when they come to the table. They serve them with a fresh pico salsa and a creamy jalapeño dip that's off the chain! They're tortillas are even made in house and so delicious. Second times a charm! This time we came in the door and asked for Jazz. She was true to form, all smiles, very knowledgeable and more fantastic suggestions. I swear I am not kin to this young lady. She just has a bubbling personality and frankly I don't think she has a bad day. Well jazz suggested the fajita chicken burrito for me today. She said the fajita chicken has more flavor in her opinion and of course, don't forget the boom boom sauce on top. They call their burrito BIG AS YOUR FACE BURRITO. When we arrived, we were seated very promptly. The hostess sat us at a table, but we wanted a booth so we told her and she was more than happy to change our seat. The waitress Donna was very helpful with the questions we asked and our food came out extremely fast. My friend and I ordered the fried shrimp tacos and it was filled with so much flavor. Their second day open was my first day to eat here. I will need to do a return visit for a better opinion to form, but my first impression is that this will be a popular place. The lunch crowd was piling in, so I volunteered to be seated in the bar area since I was a party of one. My server--the bartender--especially recommended two entrees, and being a Tupelo-born Mississippi boy I had to go with the "Elvis" chicken. It was totally delicious! A pounded-out chicken breast fried in crushed potato chips, with a topping of cheese. "Love me tender!" Oh yeah! The accompanying rice and refrained beans were typical of such restaurants. Where do I begin. The service was excellent. I cannot remember our waitress name but she was able to recommend suggest for alcoholic beverages as well as food. She was attentive even though she was busy. Our food came our in a timely manner. I order the chicka chicka boom boom enchiladas. This was awesome and flavorful. Hubby ordered the enchilada and chalupa. He expressed that his food was good also. Then there is the Tres Leche cake. This cake is equivalent to the three milk cake. Wow! They finally opened one in Richmond. I went with an old work friend to try out lunch. This is a chain that I hugely enjoy in the Houston market and was super excited that one was opening up in the Richmond Short-Pump area. I went at lunch. The parking lot was fully packed, so we went to the nearby parking deck. It was as I expected. When we went to the restaurant, I was surprised that they were able to seat us almost immediately. The waitress was fantastically nice. It was interesting to see a "Fan Chick" serving in Short Pump. Ok, that may have been a bit derogatory, but it wasn't intended. If you've been to Richmond, you know the type. Tats everywhere and peircings whereever there weren't enough tattoos. She was unbelievably good. She knew the menu, was fast, prompt, nice, and a great conversationalist. This place should have received a five stars on her service alone. I ordered the fish tacos. While we waited we had some nice warm chips with that smokey salsa I love. The timing of the delivery was a bit sketchy. I attribute it to the new store ills and hope that things get better the longer that they are around. The food had a heat lamp feel to it, but the taste was sublime. I hope that they are able to tie the order to the delivery and will rate them again later - once they dial it in. The fish tacos were excellent and the refried black beans were fantastic. However, as I said earlier, they had spent a bit too much time under a heat lamp or something and just wasn't as good as they have in Houston. Definitely a place to check out. Still not exactly sure what "Tex-mex" is but I sure do love me some good quality Mexican food (hopefully no one lashes at me for saying that..) They have "valet" parking at this location in SP which I think is silly b/c there's a parking deck literally 20 feet away.. haha. The inside decor reminds me of a chuck e cheese for some odd reason. Everything is really bright and multicolored from red to yellow to orange and green. I came around 1PM for lunch and this place was HOPPING! Not exactly sure how big this place is as we sat in only one part of their restaurant. This place seems very family friendly and there were plenty of kids and their parents here. Me and my friend didn't really know what to order from the menu and our waitress pointed out to us that anything in green is a customer favorite. I got the Baja Tacos with fried shrimp which came with re-fried beans and rice and two soft tacos with fried shrimp. My baja tacos were AMAZINGLY DELICIOUS. Fried shrimp, fried to perfection, very nicely seasoned and the sauce was outrageously good. The beans and rice though were just kinda meh and didn't really stand out to me. I am definitely open up to anything more "authentic" for a tex mex experience. Service was pretty good and checked up on us regularly. Not recommended. If you love Tex-Mex food you'll hate this place. We're back in the DC metro area for a few weeks to visit friends and family. We lived here off and on for almost 30 years before living abroad. For years, the standards for Tex-Mex food in this area were Uncle Julio's Rio Grande Café and Guapo's---in that order. Both chains are at several sites in Northern Virginia and Washington DC. Our kids took us to this place raving about it in advance. Their judgment is usually pretty good. But they were wrong in this case. It appears they like this place because of the informal dining atmosphere and draw of the place to families with young children. And I don't understand the latter: both Uncle Julio's and Guapo's readily accommodate young children with no problem. The food here is truly tasteless. And it's priced as high as Guapo's and Uncle Julio's. Why go? Want good Tex-Mex in the DC metro area? Go to Uncle Julio's or Guapo's. Uncle Julio's has sites in Ballston (Arlington), Fairfax, and Reston Virginia. I seem to recall that might be a site as well in Bethesda. Guapo's has sites in Washington DC and Northern Virginia. I've been hearing a lot about Chuy's, so when my friend suggested we meet here the other night, I was excited! First thing I noticed was this was not a typical Mexican restaurant. The layout was different and even the staff. However, everyone was very polite and welcoming. The food -- Started us out with chips and salsa. The salsa definitely had a kick to it! Which I personally liked, but I'm not sure that would be for everyone! For dinner, I ordered the special that night (Tuesday), which was 2 chicken enchiladas with green salsa and rice and refried beans. Delicious! Second visit I ordered a hard taco (beef) and cheese enchilada, rice and refried beans. While I don't think there was anything incredibly different from some of the other Mexican places I go to, except for maybe a little more spice, I enjoyed it. There was also some happy hour chips and sauces, etc. but we never made it over to that area either time. The service was prompt and friendly both times as well. The restaurant is clean and spacious. Omg we love Chuy's. We have been to the one in Austin, Tx. I never could figure out what the big deal was about TexMex until I ate at Chuy'swe both started out with a Ma's Rita since it's Saturday. Chips are lite , warm and if u can try all three salsa's all have a different heat level but fabulous! Then we both ordered fav Chile Rellieno's. Mine with cheese and boom boom sauce, chile rice, and charro beans(whole). Bf had his with chicken n cheese same sides. The chiles are soo fresh that they are have that nice crunch when u eat them. To die for really. So I don't know about all the weird reviews... Dummies. It's TexMex not Mexican. So if u are looking for something different try it. read more

The good: the chips w salsa and Ranchero sauce were great. The chicken tortilla soup is the best I've ever had. Do not miss out on trying the soup. It's amazing! The bad: it was busy so we weren't expecting great service but it was quite bad. No one cleared our table after the soup course even though we picked up the bowl and tried to hand it to the food runner. She ignored and walked away. She dropped an extremely hot plate in front of me with my burrito with no warning. I burned both hands trying to move it. Just a very unpleasant experience today with that particular food runner/waitress. My fiance got chicken quesadilla for lunch. There was one piece of chicken in the entire thing. We've been to Chuy's before, and I was really looking forward to our visit. Everything about this experience was mediocre. Our server was in a rush, was inattentive, and didn't get my order right. After we received our food, he was also by our table three times checking on other tables before he checked back with us. He also didn't notice that the order was wrong. G ordered the Macho burrito and it was delicious. I had the Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, my go to. Usually it's delicious. This time it was very, VERY mediocre. We sometimes go to Chuy's for happy hour because they have great margaritas and a make-your-own nacho bar with chips, salsa, queso, beef and retried beans. You can easily make a meal of it. For drinks, I like the Texas Martini, which is essentially a margarita with less margarita mix and jalapeño-stuffed olives. They come out in a cute cocktail shaker and are easily two drinks...a bargain at happy hour. read more
