We stopped into this location for an impromptu early dinner yesterday and were immediately turned off by a server who was up front loudly complaining to the young hostess that she was "tired, overworked, had not had a break and didn't want anyone else seated in her section." The bar was fairly empty so we voluntarily offered to sit in there to relieve the pressure from the young hostess, who was obviously frazzled by this server's demand...and we were more than happy with our decision. The bartender, an African-American gentleman, who was also responsible for serving the patio tables was very busy but was upbeat, had a great personality and provided all of his guests outstanding service! This was our first time at this location and we will definitely be back for drinks and dinner in the BAR again. This was going to be our first and last visit to this location but the bartender really turned this experience around. We tried today for the first time and were disappointed by the service. The kids' meal included a drink and dessert, but neither was offered. When they bring out the chips and fresh salsa, be sure to ask for a side of creamy jalepeno ranch for dipping. During happy hour, you can get all the free queso and taco meat you care to eat in the bar area. My favorite dish is the Chicken Chuychanga. It is a huge meal. Absolutely delicious! If you can manage to save room for dessert, which will be a challenge, the Tres Leches cake will not disappoint. It's moist and plenty large enough to share. read more

I've been to Chuy's in Texas and the food, atmosphere and overall quality does not change one bit, even if you're eating Tex Mex in Richmond, VA. Ask for the white cream dip for your chips (it balances out the spicy salsa - I'd avoid if you're not able to eat anything spicier than mild salsa). Maybe split a platter if you're even thinking of getting dessert. But the very, very best part is the tres leches cake. This is from a while ago, but I remember it clearly enough to give it a solid "meh" as far as a Yelp review goes. The restaurant is decorated with a them of pee-wees playhouse and "hey this is kind of mexican maybe if you take psychotropic drugs?". It's very rare I'll even comment on how a restaurant looks because you're there for the food, not the fancy decor. Well, maybe I am but that's besides the point. We were seated in a booth next to another booth in this strange alcove. My bench had another bench behind it. Our neighbors were having problems with their marriage and I think the wife cheated on her husband. I know they have had problems recently but don't want to get a divorce because baby we can make this work I just need to be able to trust you ok? I'm not making that up. We could hear every work of their conversation even though they were whispering. I assume the sound got trapped in the alcove since we were seated so close together (in a sparsely populated dining area too go figure.) Our servers name was Brad. Or Steve. Chad. Chris. All of those looks and talk the same and I know you can picture a Chad pretty easily. That's him. That guy was our server. Nice enough, but I don't come to Mexican restaurants for Chad's. I come for some dude who has a thick accent who shows up to our table with a pencil, a piece of paper, and a sense of immediate urgency to take our order as fast as possible. You've been to other mexican spots so you know what I'm talking about. If you haven't, may god have mercy on your soul please get out more. I ordered some type of buritto. It had steak in it. There was cheese on top. Some salsa. I can't remember enough about it because it was entirely forgettable. Chuy's is a mile or two down the road from Mexico restaurant and trying to compare the two is really sad. It's like some middle aged white guy couldn't figure out what Mexican food was so he asked someone to describe it to him through dixie cups and twine. He didn't really hear it, but he got the jist. Kind of. Not really though. We ended up packing it in and as we were leaving I gave some words of encouragement to the couple next to us. "Love conquers all ya'll. Or just get a divorce whatever." Their marital problems gave us a more compelling reason to stay and finish our mediocre meal. We didn't ask for to-go boxes for what we couldn't finish. We came on National Margarita Day which was probably not the best idea because their was an hour long wait but the food was super yummy!! I love their tortilla soup. It's very delicious and filling. It had avocado, chicken, tortilla strips and other veggies in it. They have a very large menu and several drink options. Honestly for a chain restaurant it is very delicious! I don't usually go to chain restaurants but I do like Chuys. The food is good, they have lots of options and our waitress was very friendly and accommodating especially considering how packed the restaurant was the day we came. The Happy Hour is amazing with free tortilla chips, salsa, quest, beans and meat. You can get additional dips for free but you have to ask for them. A few are hatch green chile and creamy jalapeño. My wife and I like one of each. The alcoholic beverages are the bomb. My wife loves the Texas Martini which is two drinks in one and I prefer the frozen strawberry margarita. There are some good entree items which are the spinach chicken enchiladas, the chicka-chicka boom-boom enchiladas, the fajita beef burrito smothered in cheese and the appetizer plate. I went to Chuy's for lunch with my sister. The restaurant was busy around prime lunch hours. A server brings chips and salsa to your table. The chips are thin and fried to a nice crisp. I thought Chuy's salsa was good but not great. I ordered an Elvis Presley Memorial Combo (Beef Tex-Mex enchilada, cheese Ranchero enchilada, chicken Tomatillo enchilada, a seasoned ground sirloin with homemade tostada chips dipped in chile con queso). Most meals come with beans and rice as well. The enchiladas are good. I'm not a big fan of beans but Chuy's refried beans are tasty. My chile con queso was good as well. Our waiter was friendly and attentive. Parking can be a hassle but it's a deck across from the restaurant. I give Chuy's a 3.5 rating. read more

However, I think they're starting to slip.... We went to Chuy's Saturday night, which you'd think in Short Pump would be really busy, but it wasn't. We were seated right away, but a bunch of the servers were standing around chit-chatting in the front of the restaurant and the gentleman trying to seat us had to tell them "EXCUSE ME" about 3 times before they finally moved. It should have been a sign that all the waitstaff had nothing better to do than stand arond and chat! First off, they should warn you that the queso is $7. I'm sorry, but when the server asked if we wanted queso, I was expecting it to be around $3 or $4... But nope, it's SEVEN. ($7 bucks for some cheese in a bowl?! Really??) My boyfriend always gets the steak burrito -- and normally he loves it. This time he said there were practically no jalapenos on it and the steak was a little over cooked. I always get the #6 -- which is an Enchilada, Taco, & Chalupa. Again, hardly any jalapenos! Normally there's a few, which I love, but nope. There was literally 3 jalapenos on my plate. Ugh. Otherwise the food was ok, honestly it wasn't that hot. Makes me think our server didn't deliver it until much after it was ready. I ended up taking half of it home, because it just wasnt that appealing. Our server was nice, but definitely not attentive. We're not hard to please --- I just hate sitting at the table with empty drink cups. We also didn't have silverware for the first 20 minutes of us sitting at the table, finally I asked for some. And then we didn't have napkins, again I had to ask. I'm normally not so critical but I feel like part of a server's job is to anticipate and notice their patron's needs! We elected to go to the "bar area" which serves an "Appetizer Only" menu. Fine. Cool. Whatever. I had shit to do at Whole Foods so lets just get this show on the road people. The bar stools were all completely full... packed house at the bar --- but we were 1 of 2 cocktail tables (out of 16) that had people sitting at them. STILL it took 10 minutes for someone to come over & say "I'm not your server but I can get your drinks started". after a long wait, some guy brings our drinkis.... basically drops them off & splits. I had to call him back in a LOUD outdoor voice to order appetizers. He wrote the 2 things we ordered down and said "these will only take 5 - 7 minutes" before walking away and seeimingly out of our lives forever. 35 minutes later our apps are delivered --- in the meantime there are 2 different people sitting at the actual bar that are served entree meals (rice/beans the whole shebang) so I'm left wondering WTF? why didnt I see a whole menu and WTF -=----- WTF????? And on top of it --- our waiter missed out on a couple more drinks he could have billed us for if only he came by to take an order.... especially once I got offended..... anyway - only gave it 2stars versus one because the waitress was OK & I like free chips/salsa bar for everyoneplus I like the people there. Thank goodness that Chuy's came to Virginia. They freed me from the monolithic pile of crap that Richmond considers "Mexican food." As a resident misplaced Texan, this place will surely become my altar for the Tex-mex food that I miss. I've only been to this location once, but I've been several times to the one in San Antonio and Austin (the original). I usually loathe chain restaurants, but this place is different because the food is good and reminiscent of my home state. I'm going to give them a break on the lack of a warm, Texas welcome due to it being so new. The food was spot on. I ordered a combination plate so that I could try a little bit of everything. I had enchiladas, flautas, a taco, guacamole, chile con queso, beans, rice, and tres leches cake. Everything was good, but if you come here, don't order an effing taco plate, go to a proper taqueria for that business. I witnessed the fajitas and was SO happy to see that they were proper fajitas instead of that weird sh-t they serve at other local "Mexican" food places. I still need to try their tortillas, which is the deciding factor for me, but based on everything else, it looks promising. Please, come here, enjoy the food and a restaurant that really reminds me to "keep Austin weird." I want this place to stay for that I can get my "fix" of food here in Richmond. I live around the corner from Chuy's and noticed that it was open on my way home. I grabbed my roommate and set out for dinner. We had tried several mexican restaurants around the area and weren't impressed. Our expectations were that they were going to be on par with the others. We get there and was told that a table for 2 was going to be a 25 minute wait. It was slightly busy, but I knew it wasn't going to be that long (it's better to overshoot the wait time than to be short). When they gave me my pager, they said we could help ourselves to the nacho bar. What? I can eat while I wait? Awesome. We grab a basket, grab some chips and dive into some of the best salsa I've ever had at any mexican restaurant. 2 minutes of waiting and my pager goes off. Wow. We get seated and look at the menu. We were really surprised at how cheap the dinner plates were. I ordered the Elvis Fried chicken. We finish our basket of chips, and I get another basket, and then our food arrived. They must have been on point that night. The portions were pretty big! $10 for fried chicken, and some bangin rice and beans? I couldn't finish it, and I'm a big boy. I know this may be a chain, but my husband and I are obsessed with Chuy's. We are new to Richmond, and LOVE our Tex-Mex, so when we came to visit the area before moving here, we had dinner there. I know that there are a million amazing places that we still need to go to in Richmond, but with Chuy's being 5 minutes away, we are constantly going back because we love it. Is the decor silly? Maybe - but who cares? The food is amazing and the service is great. The T-Shirts the wait staff wear are hysterical too. As everyone else says, the chips and salsa are super fresh and incredible. The jalapeño cream salsa concoction is also amazing- not to mention all you can eat. They are super addictive so try to remember that you still need to eat dinner. We got the sampler platter the first time we went there so that we could get a taste of a little bit of everything and now we ALWAYS have to get it, even though we know we will be taking leftovers home. The Nachos, Queso Dip, and Quesadillas are awesome - the only thing I don't care for are the chicken flautas -so hubs always gets to eat those :) The steak fajitas are so, SO good - the meat can be cut with a fork, and the tortillas - OH MY - fresh and made right on the spot. I want to try new things when I go there, I really do... but I just can't pass up the fajitas and always order them. We usually get the fajitas for two which is awesome but last time we went, my husband got the steak burrito and my father in law got the Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, both of which are signature dishes. So, I sent it back and asked for a better dish. I than asked for HOT Salsa, and she brought me a HOT Cheese dip... I sent it back as I wanted Spicy Hot Salsa which Mexicans Restaurants always have... So the server showed me the spicy dishes of Salsa which you have to pay extra for, so I asked for the 3 chilli one... When it came out... What I consider as HOT is not HOT in their book... They "cooked" the Salsa... I guess they do not understand Temperature Hot from Spicy Hot... So, I gave up on the Salsa... I ordered the Chicka Chicka Boom Boom dish. It was a Burrito which was deep fried. This was new to me, however when I cut into it, it was full of just plain chicken with NO spices or seasoning to the dish. The chicken meat was dry and tasteless. SO, I asked the server for some HOT sauce... Now when you go into a Good Mexican Restaurant, they will bring you out some Mexican Hot Sauce.... Instead, she brought me a bottle of Tabasco. Of course it took over 5 min. for her to bring the Hot Sauce, because the server stopped and talked to others before bringing it to me... so in the meantime, my food was getting cold.... Finally, my service was barely OK.... She never came around once, to ask if the food was OK or can I get you anything else. I was having lunch with a friend, and we both decided upon leaving... Chuy's Mexican Food has a long ways to go before I feel it I can call this Authentic Mexican Food. I will say this... the chips were the best part of the Meal. Just remember to take your own Salsa. I've been to Chuy's three times in the last two weeks. One word: YUM. For those saying it's not real mexican food, DUH it's a chain tex mex joint in Virginia! If you can deal with that, Chuy's is wonderful for those who love kickin', flavorful dishes. They have huge portions, a great waitstaff, and delicious food. I've had 3 different dishes so far: First visit: fish tacos, second visit: chicka chicka boom boom, third visit: chuychanga. Fish tacos were the least impressive of the three, I was disappointed how it was fried and that it was a huge piece of a fish rather than smaller chunks. The other two dishes were on point. The chicken is moist and the large variety of sauces are spicy yet not so hot you want to dunk your head in a bucket. I'm a big fan of the salsa! It's so simple, just tomatoes, cilantro, onions and lots of lime juice. They just started setting out their creamy jalapeno sauce with the housemade chips which are scrumptious. I also love that you can watch the tortillas being made from where you sit. I also want to point out their refried beans are really good I usually HATE refried beans and I will eat Chuy's, which is a huge compliment in my book. If you are still against it, they have another bean option that are simmered in a meat sauce which is really good. The margaritas are decent. My favorite so far is the frozen sangria and lime margarita together, but they certainly don't have as big of a kick as traditional mexican restaurants. The atmosphere is funky and fun to look at, also if there's a long wait (which there definitely will be at peak hours) there's a hollowed out car hood with free chips and salsa. So cool. read more

Ate at Chuy's yesterday with my wife. We really enjoyed ourselves, but I must admit we are from Oklahoma and Texas and have been missing good Tex-Mex being in the Richmond area. The salsa was almost exactly what we are looking for with good chunks of freshly cut vegetables, possibly a little spicy for regular table salsa. No complaints about the chips either, nicely thin and crispy with a bit of salt. She had chicken enchiladas, and I had the chicken combo from the light section of the menu. The most telling thing I can say is that my wife that rarely eats too much cleared two enchiladas and a double helping of spanish rice. Finished off the meal with sopapillas that were amazing. Average Mexican food! The chips (when hot) were fabulous and I enjoyed the salsa and white sauce. When I walked in, I wasn't expecting it to look like it did. I was expecting more of an Applebees or Ruby Tuesday vibe, but when we came in it was more of a... South of the Boarder vibe? There were fake palm trees, Christmas lights, photos on the walls, and all types of colorful-ness. The staff was very nice and attentive. My lunch meeting spanned a little over 2 hours and we never felt rushed. I ordered the chicken fajitas. They came piping hot with all your typical fajita supplies. Sour cream, lettuce, pico de gallo, tortillas, and rice and beans. I gotta say that this meal was just ok (& expensive for a lunch meal! I paid $20 for that!). I didn't really like the rice and beans. They weren't hot enough, the rice was kind of... dry? And it didn't really have any flavor. The tortillas were also a bit... different? The waitress brought out complimentary chips with salsa and creamy jalapeno dip almost immediately, and they were awesome. The jalapeno dip is spectacular, and the chips are thin and crispy. The salsa was not my favorite, as it tasted heavily of cilantro, and I strongly dislike cilantro, but I think most people that like cilantro would love the salsa. I ordered the combo #2 - the elvis presley memorial combo. It came with a beef enchilada, cheese enchilada, chicken enchilada, ground sirloin taco and tostada chips with queso. And rice and beans. The amount of food I got for $9.99 was ASTOUNDING. It took me 3 meals to eat it all. The beef enchilada was my fave, while the cheese one was only okay. The "tostada chips" was really only two large tortilla chips, and it came on a separate plate with the taco, but it was really really good. I think the taco was actually my favorite item out of them all. My dining partner ordered the Elvis Green Chile Fried Chicken, which is breaded with Lay's potato chips! He couldn't stop raving about it, and the bite that I snuck from his plate was delicious. It was surprisingly juicy, and the breading was very fun. When we were paying and asking for boxes for leftovers (even my dining partner had to get a to-go box, and trust me, he can eat an ABSURD amount of food and almost never gets to-go boxes), and the waitress asked if I wanted a box for the chips and dip. I assumed she meant for the chips that were uneaten, so I said sure! But she brought out a whole BAG of fresh chips, AND she had included to-go containers of both the salsa and jalapeno dip in them.
