Let me start off by saying that I had worked at this location from 2011-2014. I had also worked at two previous tex-mex beforehand. I have to say that some of these reviewers have no clue what they are talking about and have probably never been a server before. Most of these one star reviews should be ignored. That being said, I have honestly never worked at any restaurant (I've been a server for about 8 years) that uses as fresh of ingredients that chuys does. I think the only thing frozen in the entire building is like kids French fries and ice cream. The cooks come in early everyday and start prepping for the lunch rush. Fresh veggies and meat. For the shredded chicken they literally cook a few whole chickens in the oven and they hand pick the meat off the bird. Can't get much better than that. All tortillas are handmade. The chicken breasts and skirt steaks are marinaded every day. I'm just sayin it's fresh stuff. As for the "terrible service", I mean yeah that can happen anywhere. I know a lot of the people mentioned in these reviews and I know how hard a lot of them work. To come on yelp and be rude like that is messed up. Servers are people too ya know. Chuy's is the hubs and I favorite tex-mex place. My favorite is the Southwest Enchiladas. Don't be put off by the fried egg on top, it is the traditional way to have enchiladas and the green chili is delicious. I could just get a bowl of that and drink it. Everyone else who has reviewed has mentioned the creamy jalapeno sauce and they couldn't be more right! The fish tacos are also one of my favorites. The only two downsides I have come across with Chuy's is the wait and that they had never heard of a Michelada. read more

Chuy's is a comfortable mexican restaurant. Sometimes the wait can be long. I don't go on weekends. Follow that advice and you will usually not wait more than a few minutes. I have included a list of tips below. 1. Happy Hour on Weeknights Sit in the bar and enjoy $3 margaritas along with FREE self serve nacho bar. Ask for some creamy jalapeno dip and you all set. 2. Creamy Jalapeno Dip This stuff is like crack! Most of the time you have to ask for it, but it is free and amazing! 3. Daily Specials $7 - $10 for awesome meals. For a regular, it is a great way to mix it up. If you are new to Chuy's this will give you a good way to try a range of items. 4. Go Hungry Portions are BIG and you will want to eat it all. This really should be entitled "An obituary for a Texas icon". Let me expound. I try not to submit a review off of one experience. Everyone can have a bad night, and with yelp having more and more impact on these establishments, I think it prudent to use a little discretion. That being said, for the past 18 months I have been like Charlie Brown kicking the football when it comes to this place. Each time I think the experience will be better; but it never is. Last night was the last straw. For background, I used to be a big fan. I took my now wife there on our second date. About two years ago, I thought I started noticing what I would call a decline in ingredient quality. Proteins were of lesser quality and less quantity. More carbs, less vegetables, things like that. However, all things being equal, it was still a good value, and you could do much worse than a beer, chips and some of the different sauces they would provide. Then, service started falling through the floor. Beginning with indifferent hostesses, dirty tables, surly bartenders and wait staff that couldn't seem to get your order right, thru a kitchen that almost every time (at least in my opinion) couldn't get a complete order out at the same time, or correctly. My experiences here got worse and worse. Last night was a perfect example of the problems in this restaurant. Frankly, my guess is that because of the lack of competition in this market for Tex-Mex, management here just goes through the motion. But just for fun, here is what I saw last night. No greeting at all. No napkins, three sets of silverware where we had four people (fortunately my son was able to swipe napkins and silverware off another table since our server never figured it out), errors on drinks, no chips or salsa for ten minutes, No appetizer plates at all. They gave us dinner plates after asking twice. Fifteen minutes on queso, to which our server offered, three times 'it's on its way". The kitchen running out of table red sauce entirely. one enchilada instead of two on a plate. No guacamole at all on another dish (I told the server that if it wasn't listed on the menu that we didn't need it. I don't think the server knew). They brought my kids drinks in adult glasses which is fine, then brought refills for some reasons in kids cups. Nachos had all the melted cheese pooled in the middle of the plate. A spoon, allegedly clean had a crust on it. Now, I want to make one think clear. The server apologized profusely at the end of the evening. He knew it was a mess. That tells me a couple of things. One is that he wasn't clueless and was trying, at least in my opinion, to do a decent job. Two is that the training and oversight of these people stinks. Not once did I see a manager trolling the floor looking for issues. As I stated above, sadly, I think they are just shoveling product. For that I am sad. For now, adios Chuy. Ah, Chuy's... how I've missed you! Though I may live in California now, you are still my favorite TexMex/Southwest style mecca... I made my pilgrimage back here last week, and yes, it was a religious experience Chuy's has that rare combination of restaurant perfection... gaudy Texas trailer-trash decor, Elvis pictures everywhere, fantastic margaritas, heavenly TexMex food, friendly staff, cool t-shirts, an awesome patio, and lest we forget, creamy jalapeno salsa! Known to regulars as "creamy J", it is, as some Yelpers have described, the crack cocaine of salsas. Highly addicting. Approach with caution I have yet to eat anything I didn't like here, though I usually just stick to the Southwest Enchiladas (with a fried egg on top, of course!), Chicka Boom Boom, and the Hatch Chili Rellenos. And if you're looking for a real (and real hot) treat, order the amazing Hatch chili sauce on your entree. Try finding THAT in California... HA! Overall, a top favorite eatery for us, sure to please anyone with a soft spot in their soul for REALLY good TexMex. read more

Dust was on tortilla/ food when it came out and they tried to say it was from the chicken frying. My husband got the cheese enchiladas and they tasted hard almost frozen like. This place was so packed on a Friday night that I just knew it had to be great. I have to say it was decent. The flavors were good. I had the Elvis combo - 3 enchiladas (chicken - bland; ground beef - tasty; and cheese - good not queso), crispy ground beef taco, rice and beans. I enjoyed most of the food. There was no "favorite" on my plate. The sauces were good. But I'm still looking for a Mexican restaurant that isn't tex-mex... I grew up on west coast mexican food... trying to adjust ...trying to adjust. But I was super glad that there was no queso covered creation on my plate. That would have ruined it for me. My hubby had a chicken enchilada with boom-boom sauce and a shrimp relleno. He really liked the sauce and really didn't like the relleno [His grandma used to make them for him and you can't compete with grandma]. The batter on the relleno was really crispy and dense like that on fried chicken or fish - not at all like the light, crisp egg batter that we, hubby & I, grew up with. All in all, I would go back. The price was certainly better than our most frequented tex-mex spot, Pappasitos, and the food was comparable. It has a very divey atmosphere. Probably the best TexMex in the area. They bring you chips and their standard salsa which is very good. Ask for the creamy jalapeno ranch. You'll find yourself wanting to put a straw in that to just drink it. Perfect on chips and/or drizzled on some enchiladas. The roast chicken enchilada with the hatch chili sauce is a favorite of mine. I like the hatch sauce without the cream. It's light, spicy, and robust with hatch chili flavor. If I had to come here for one dish it would be their chile relleno. Perfectly crispy on the outside and your pick of filling for the inside. Picadillo with ranchero sauce is my favorite here. Get the combo with the cheese enchilada with onions. If you don't have onions on your cheese enchilada it's possible that you have a character flaw. Nice patio outside on a nice day. One of the best Tex- Mex restaurants i been to. I ate from this place when we had a lunch in at work . i ate some fajitas, and i was hooked. There flower tortillas are hand made and very good. There's not to many places where you find hand made tortillas. And if you do there not good! They have this dip OMG i went crazy when i tasted it. Salsa was just bad. Even with a one page menu you would think that the salsa recipe would not be different. The second salsa that use to be yummy looked like watered down Ranch Dressing. I ordered the fajitas chicken tacos. The chicken meat was hardly room temperature. My husband ordered the burrito. It was as big as ever but a request for Charro beans instead of refrained beans came with we don't serve those anymore. It was not worth the cost. Very disappointing meal. Chuy's. I had no idea what to expect. My husband and I were in Texas for a long weekend due to a cousin's wedding and all the family festivities that go along with it. And apparently, Chuy's went along with family festivities! We rolled into the restaurant around 7 pm on a Sunday night and were told it would be at least an hour before we could be seated. Okay--we did have a group of 15. Not ideal, I get it. But Chuy's to the rescue--we were seated within a half hour. Impressive. I don't know how they did it, but I was so grateful. We were seated banquet style at a long table and one booth. Sucked for the people at the booth to be away from the crowd, but not a big deal. And then, the food started coming. Never ending chips and salsa. Did I talk about the ranch? Life changing. I wanted to drink it with a straw! Think that's gross? Go try the ranch and then get back to me. Margaritas were flowing--nothing too fancy there, but they got the job done. And the meal itself--fine. You see, I was so impressed with the margs, chips and dip that I don't really even remember my meal. I think it was tacos al carbon over lettuce instead of in tortillas. Just okay. Nothing spectacular. My husband had a giant burrito and said the same thing. Tex-mex? Is that how I should classify this restaurant? It's a winner. I would definitely go back, but probably just for a happy hour drink and appetizers. And the decor? It's chintzy and over the top, but it fits with the vibe. read more

Great atmosphere and great food. It's so much easier to write a review for a place you like because there's not a whole lot to say. Everything has some kind of heat to it which is appealing to me. Everything has a lot of flavor which is why we eat out anyway. If I could cook with that kind of flavor I would never eat out. I've seen many people talk about the Mexican authenticity...well, I've had real Mexican (lived in San Diego, ten mins from the border) and this is not real Mexican. It's Tex-Mex... I guess I just assumed that by moving to a state famous for that, you would see more of that. So no, I'm not complaining that it isn't straight up Mexican. Me and my daughter had dinner tonight at the Shenandoah location. Everything was good as far as the food goes. When it came down to pay the server said he accidentally charged me for a beer but since it was happy hour it was the same price as a soft drink. I looked at the ticket and it was 3.25. Which i thought was high but thought maybe there drinks are just more here. I have worked in restaurants for as long as i can remember abd nowhere where i have work have drinks been over 2.49. When i got home i looked up how much soft drink are at chuys and i was right. Drinks are only 2.49 and he charged me 3.25. Which its only 76 cents but that's not what irritates me. What irritates me is he lied about it and knew what he was doing. I always tip good no matter where i go. And i strongly regret it this time. I've been to Chuy's a handful of times in the last 5 years. Most recently was a couple days ago, where i was in a party of 20 people. I called about an hour and a half ahead of time to reserve. I got there on time, we didn't get seated until 45 minutes later. This is why i'm giving 4 stars. Almost everytime i go to Chuy's it takes time to get seated, and i understand that i had 20 people to seat so that made it more difficult. Besides waiting at the beginning, the rest of the visit went well. There were 2 waitresses assigned to us, and they did a very good job managing everyone at the table and making sure that we got what we needed. Some people had food restrictions, there were some vegans, gluten free and special orders. Chuy's had plenty of selection and catered to those people well. All in all, a good trip! read more

Again our waiter was absolutely stellar, attentive, quick, replaced a foul tasting ice tea immediately though it did seem to us that he and or they were already aware the tea was off/spoiled old or something. Chips were kept full, but first round were stale and cold, second serving was better again our waiter did a great job. The food however SUCKED! Tacos al carbon were as tough as tire rubber, instead or pico they just gave us diced yellow unripe tomatoes (so lazy!) tortillas were ripped and falling apart, rice was cold, no charro beans, my lady's chimichanga was marginally better but the same lousy sides my sons hamburger was mediocre and cold he barely touched it. Seriously the worst food I've ever had from them, the only reason for 2 stars was our waiter he was on his game, and we tipped him well in spite of the very subpar food. This was my first time eating at Chuy's since the mid-late 90s. I was pleasantly pleased but a little annoyed with the server. Here's my breakdown. An older guy named John was our waiter. He was being shadowed by a guy in training. Now my issue with him was, he waited on larger parties around us way more than he waited on us (table of two). Also, having not been there in 20 some-odd years it was akin to my first visit. I noticed the table next to us had some green sauce that we didn't have. I asked the waiter what it was and he told me. I said "we didn't get any of that", to which he replied "You have to request it, we don't give it unless you ask for it." SERIOUSLY?!?! He didn't ask if this was my first visit. He didn't tell me about the sauce when we sat down. Here we were nearing the end of our meal when I found out about it. SHEESH!! BTW we've been to the Humble locations 3 times since and have NEVER had to request the green sauce! Chips & salsa was promptly delivered. Although we had to flag servers down to get refills. We love their green sauce. Their red salsa is fresh and delicious but can sometimes be a little spicy for me. I'm a water with lime girl, and they brought me plenty of limes, which I liked. My Husband got the Steak Burrito w/ hatch sauce on the side, which is: A handmade, 12" flour tortilla stuffed with sliced grilled steak & cheese, topped with spicy Hatch Green Chile sauce. Served with green chile rice & charro beans. The Hatch sause is SPICY but the burrito is delicious. Yes, we're "that family" that takes bites off of each other's plates. :op I got the Baja Tacos, grilled, one of each (one shrimp, one fish). Freshly made flour tortillas with your choice of lightly battered and fried fish or shrimp, cilantro, red cabbage and Creamy Jalapeño. Something about the crunchy sweet cabbage and the cream Jalapeno sauce just puts this over the edge. I suggest you squeeze a little lime on them too. I flew into Houston 4 hours ago for a 5 day business trip and was using Yelp to lookup nearby restaurants for dinner. I read the reviews for Chuy's. A lot of people were raving over the Jalapeño Ranch dip. I noticed others talking about the Chika Chika Boom Boom Chicken Enchilada. I looked at their online menu via Yelp iPad App. It looked interesting. I decided to give Chuy's a try. The parking lot is large. There is a dedicated Curbside To Go parking area with 4 stalls for order pickup. I went inside and the greeter immediately acknowledged me. I was seated in under 5 mins. I looked into the bar area. There were tables and seating at the bar. It was packed. The restaurant has character with the decor. I was seated and was acknowledged by Lauren, the server, as she was serving an adjacent table. Lauren came to my table afterwards. We talked about the menu and I ended up ordering the Chicka-Chicka Boom-Boom, which is a dish that comes with two Chicken Enchiladas in their Boom-Boom sauce, flanked by rice and beans, which is quite good. The Boom-Boom sauce contains Cheese, New Mexican Green Chile, Green Onions, Cilantro, Tomatillos, and Lime Juice. This same sauce is used on their Mexi-Cobb Salad, according to the server. Lauren also brought a basket of homemade chips, a cup of homemade Salsa, and a cup of the Jalapeño Ranch dip. The Jalapeño Ranch dip is awesome. I am enjoying it as I type this. It was so good that I was using the chips like a spoon to scoop the dip. The server, Lauren, was very attentive. She brought another basket of chips before I had a chance to ask. After enjoying my meal, Lauren asked me if I was interested in dessert. Normally, I turn down dessert, but she mentioned Deep Fried Ice Cream. I haven't had Deep Fried Ice Cream in a long time and was curious so I ordered it. When I ordered it, I did so, out of curiosity, with the intention of tasting a little of it and not eating much of it. When Lauren brought the Deep Fried Ice Cream, I was surprised at the size of it. It was a softball size round Deep Fried Ice Cream. It was covered by Chocolate syrup and flanked by some stick shaped pastries. Two people could easily share this. As I used my spoon to peel off the outer breading, I noticed that there were Chex type squares in it and it tasted like Cinnamon. The Ice Cream was still freezer cold. Vanilla Ice Cream on the inside and warm Cinnamon Toast Crunch cereal on the outside. I ended up eating a little under half of the dessert. I stopped because I was full. Overall, a good restaurant with a vibrant and loud atmosphere. The loudness was due to the many conversations of happy patrons enjoying the ambience and food of the restaurant. I also noticed families with kids, so it is a kid friendly place as well. The only complaint is that the Jalapeño Ranch Dip requires refrigeration so I can't buy some and take it home for my wife to try out, back in Georgia. Internet searches turn up many websites with people attempting to recreate the Jalapeño Ranch dip. Five Stars for Chuy's and Five Stars for Lauren, the server. read more

First time here and it was SO GOOD! The jalapeno ranch sauce was amazing and I ended up dribbling it on everything I ate. I ordered the vegetarian combo.... best chile relleno I've had. I think they use the same batter that is used for chicken fried steak and it really made the relleno top notch. I live in New Mexico and completely miss my Tex-Mex. I mean, c'mon. It's Chuy's! Who doesn't love good 'ole Chuy's? This location is always packed. I don't think I've ever been in here when it wasn't busy! I will say Chuy's is one of my favorite Tex-Mex restaurants in the Woodlands area, so you can't go wrong. Although, I have a feeling they'll have some competition with the new Pappasitos's right next to them. Everyone knows you go to Chuy's for the jalapeño ranch dip. It's SO GOOD. Literally always craving it. They also have a really good pico de gallo salsa they give you at the table with chips. The servers & hostesses are usually pretty nice here. I've never had any problems with them other than service being a little slow (usually due to the busyness of the restaurant). You pretty much can't go wrong with anything here... quesadillas, enchiladas, nachos, you name it. It's allll that Tex-Mex goodness. They also have some great specials everyday of the week (like their stuffed avocado on Wednesdays... yum!) They also have really yummy margaritas + a lot of different flavors. The restaurant has a (decent) patio, and they also have a pretty nice bar area with bar tables that you can seat yourself. If it's a super busy night, you can always grab a drink & chips at the bar while you wait for your table. NOTE: They do NOT take reservations! Chuy's is the best place for TexMex. I've visited all of the Houston area locations but eat at The Woodlands location the most. The food is always good no matter where I visit. Service can be a bit slower if you sit in the bar area or outside, but I've never had terrible service at any Chuy's location. My favorite thing to get is the Custom Enchiladas, ground sirloin with queso or TexMex topping. Also, the complementary jalapeño ranch dip is a must with the tortilla chips. We came around 4pm on a Sunday and were seated promptly. We sat at the table for maybe 5-10 minutes without our server coming to greet us / take drink orders, so we caught the attention of a server (Hayden) working the area we were seated in. He immediately apologized and took our orders, then went and informed his manager who offered us free queso and dessert. He was very attentive the entire time we were eating, frequently refilled our beverages (that he didn't charge us for), and even packed our to go boxes / drinks. In my experience, typically this type of service doesn't come unless you are assertive or complain excessively. It's great that we were treated so well when we obviously weren't upset about the wait. Off the record, I'm pretty sure Hayden would have given us foot massages if we had asked. Just kidding, but really great service all around. read more

The larger Chuys gets, as a franchise, it feels like they loose touch with the restaurants they have worked at developing over the years. Before Chuys got so large, I feel the restaurant was much more personalized and was more attentive to the customer and their needs. It is still one of my favorite fajita places, except for the filet mignon fajitas at Pappacito's. It smells of liver when you enter the place. Liver!!! Why?! The salsa leaves an odd aftertaste which is also odd cause the salsa itself tasted like nothing. We added salt but it didn't help. The margarita was thick and processed- super gross, so I sent it back. The fajitas? Oily, flavorless, and blah. The enchilada should just be called melted cheese plate cause that's what it was. True, every Chuy's you go to will have different tacky decor, but the food and addictive creamy jalepeno dip/sauce is pretty consistent from location to location. You do have to ask for the creamy jalepeno now, which you should, because the salsa is too uninspiring and watery for my taste. The Hatch green chiles don't mess around, which is why the Southwestern Enchilada is my favorite. Blue corn tortillas, shredded chicken, green chile sauce all stacked and served with a fried egg on top. The chile sauce is what makes this dish - it's got some serious burn going on, which the egg on top helps even out and make everything work. While Chuy's is a Tex-Mex joint, this is a New Mexican dish. I guess it's Tex-Mex via El Paso or something. Service varies wildly. On our last visit, our server's attention seemed really scattered.
