I told him to cut my hair short but long enough for me to make a ponytail. What he did was, my hair is still very long, but can't make a ponytail at all, the hair will fall apart in a few minutes. I really hate to give this place any lower than a three, but I have to. Today was my first time coming back after years. Haven't been here since I moved out to college (2006). When I came back, it was all familiar faces. Nice people and all, but this one particular haircut, it was like the guy didn't try. Now I'm not too peculiar with my hair, and my cut isn't complicated, but you can feel it in his hands that he didn't care. Strokes were lazy half-hearted. Then halfway into the haircut he puts everything down and walks away. He's gone for half a minute and I look around to see where he went. He's in the corner on his phone, and returns to me a minute later continuing the lazy cut. I really loved this place as a kid. All I can say is this hair salon NOT for young people to go. I am 26 year old but the hair style he made me look like from 1990's. If you are older than 40, you can go to this place. If yelp can give a negative star, I totally would. This review goes for the man on the far back chair. Recently, my girlfriend decided to have a haircut. Before the hairstylist started cutting her hair, she showed him pictures and explained to him very clearly what she wanted. The hairstylist should have known exactly what she was looking for after all pictures and directions. I assumed he did because he didnt ask any questions and started to cut her hair. If he was still uncertain, he should have asked her or explained to her this is how he was going to cut it. Just to make sure everything is correct. If you screw up on a guy's hair it is totally fine. Our hair grows back very fast. On the other hand, it is very traumatizing to screw up on a girls hair. Should have been extra careful on what the customer actually wanted and for him to style her hair just the way she wanted. The cut my girlfriend asked for was pretty straight forward and common, ALine cut. Which is shorter in the back and angles to a longer front. Its not something complicated at all. Shorter in the back and gets longer in the front! As you may have guessed, he somehow screwed up and gave the total opposite. He cut the front super short and left the back long. When he was done, he knew he screwed up and didnt even say anything. He just gave him the look that he to know he screwed up...If you know you screw up at least dont *^($ charge for it. He charged the standard price. I'm sure if this keeps up this place will be out of business soon. read more

I've been going here for about 5-7 years since its grand opening, and I've been a "regular." Today will be the last time due to a combination of factors: Parking: Everyone is double parking on the red "do not park/stop" curb to drop people off, blocking traffic causing a headache for everyone. This is mainly due to the nearby Bakery and Buffet next door. The sheer amount of traffic and parking violations, Newark PD could easily make a fortune here issuing tickets which would solve any budget problems they have. Service: Its always been lackluster, I've always tried to arrive on time and end up waiting about 10-30 minutes past my appointment time which isn't a big deal. Literally arrive at my appointment time and they have someone in the chair just starting to get their haircut. For me (guy) haircuts are fairly quick about 10 minutes tops as they know what style I like. The main manager Cindy really needs to have a dedicated receptionist / cashier. As other have said answering the phone while cutting hair or doing the role of cashier in the middle of a cut lacks professionalism. Cleanliness: The only person following any kind of sterilization of tools is the younger brother I can't stress that tools need to be clean after each customer. I work in many labs and this kind of grosses me out as soon as I get my haircut I take a shower. Price: Its relatively cheap but slowly goes up a dollar or two in the past couple of years which isn't a big deal. Can't beat the price (hence the extra star from the one). Reason why I am never going back: I've had my fill of being snubbed, I had times where I arrived on time for an appointment and them completely missing it by 5-40 minutes. Since someone was in the "process" of getting their haircut or hell two people who made prior appointments were still in front of me. Today I was 10-15 minutes late due to it being the lunch rush and a new grand opening of a restaurant(Beef Noodle) right next door. I promptly apologized and said I could wait and hoped they could squeeze me in between appointments (they done to me before). As I sat down, they said it will be a 2 hour wait...amazing since I was the only customer waiting there onsite. Needless to say I smiled and said thank you I'll reschedule... time to find a new barber/hair saloon to become my new regular place. Thanks and Good Luck! read more

Goodness, how could I forget about yelping this place?? This is my go to salon whenever I need a trim/haircut/hot-oil treatment. My hairstylist at this salon is LAM. He's really nice, patient, and always does an awesome job on my hair! I always go in for my usual trim and he knows exactly what to do. I refuse to go anywhere else because I walk out of here happy every time and if something's not broken, why fix it right? The last time I was in, I also asked for a hot oil treatment. He made sure that I wasn't going anywhere right after the treatment because he wanted to keep my hair a bit damp in order to help keep the oil locked in. He says that if he completely blow-drys my hair, all the oil would evaporate and it would be a waste. I'm very picky with my hair and it took me a long time to finally find a hairstylist I was happy with. I've been going here for about 4 years now and will continue to do so. $20 for an exceptional haircut?! I called in on a Saturday morning to ask if there were any openings, and there were so I didn't have to make an appointment. I walked in and was greeted by a young guy who sat me down and asked if I've ever been there before. I mentioned that I heard of the place via Yelp and that they have great reviews. I thought he was going to cut my hair, and I kind of wish he did because he could understand and speak English well. After he sprayed my hair with water, he called over an older guy. I had explained to the stylist that I've been wanting to grow out my hair (I've had a bob for 2.5 years and it was time to grow out my hair). I said I wanted a trim and get my hair thinned out. He proceeded to say something about my layers. I could not really understand what he said. Sigh...if only I could speak Cantonese. Anyhow, I walked out with a blunt bob and even layers. Not exactly what I had asked....he had cut off maybe 2 inches or so. I mean, the haircut is beautiful, but my hair was almost hitting my shoulders - it took forrrrever to grow it out to that length! Oh wellz. Growing out a bob is always awkward and hard to maintain. I guess I'll just stick with this bob for now.. Being new to the area I put my trust into Yelp once again to find me a great local business. Needless to say, this place was no let down. I called in, to see if an appointment was needed, but seeing as how I didn't need a specific barber they said I could just walk in. I ended up getting my hair cut by an older gentlemen, by the looks of it he seems to be the father that another reviewer posted about. Like they said, he doesn't speak much and when he starts to cut, he is in his own world. I have no problems with that, because there was a language barrier anyway and I just enjoyed the ambiance of the place. Price is very reasonable ($12) and the service was great. I don't speak anything but English, so there wasn't much chit chat. Although language may be an issue..these folks are pros and understood exactly what I wanted. Cut my hair quickly and with care, which for $12 is hard to come by. Don't forget this place is cash only. No worries though because the chinese fresh market is next door and they do cash back. Then my hairstylist started to chop off almost all of my hair with shears. He repeatedly "slap" my head with his hand. My mom loves Cindy and I have to agree, she definitely knows what she's doing! You absolutely have to make an appointment with her - almost impossible to get her when you drop in as she's always fully booked! One of the stylists is Cindy's brother (younger guy - usually the middle chair) I think, and he also does a great job in my opinion. He's cut my hair on several occasions and he's always delivered great work - clean, quick, and exactly what I ask for. The other one (the older of the two guys with the lips always kind of pursed) is questionable. I've sat in his chair twice, (possibly three times) because Cindy and her brother couldn't fit me in, and I wasn't too thrilled with the haircut. If there's a game on TV or a show he's into, he'll watch WHILE HE CUTS YOUR HAIR! The last time he cut my hair, I had to remind him to keep his focus. On top of that, the guy does not listen! And yes, he does stop in the middle of the haircut and walks away for a few minutes. Overall, I love this place. Cindy and her brother are AWESOME, the hostess (possibly their mom, aunt or older sister) is really nice and greets you with a warm smile! Inexpensive for a quality haircut! The owner of the store is very unprofessional. I came here a few times to get my hair washed. While Karen (who washes hair) is a nice lady, she has long nails and scrapes my scalp which hurts quite a bit. I told her I would appreciate it is she used her finger tips vs. her nails so she doesn't hurt me. She said, "I can't help it I have long nails". When I went back this time, I told the owner I would appreciate it if someone with short nails could wash my hair as it hurts when Karen does it. She said I'm sorry but we all have long nails here. I'm a bit shocked at the response. If you're in a profession where the service you are offering (hair wash) is hurting the client because of your personal choice to keep the length of your nails long. You shouldn't offer that service. I won't go back here as customer service is very important to me and this place is lacking it. read more

Some positives: - overall, looks like the people who work here are experienced and generally provide good haircuts - prices are very reasonable Some negatives: - the guy who gave me hair-cut was very rude. He hardly speaks, but when he gets started on your hair, he is like in his own little world-haircutting world! I've been seeing Cindy for almost a decade now. I've convinced a few of my girlfriends to see her since then, and converted them to a "Cindy Fan". Honestly she is a miracle worker. A friend of mine suggested I see her one day, because the previous person who cut my hair (ummmm) - I desperately needed a hair fairy to come and do some magic - needless to say it was pretty jacked up. She made it look good for the length that it was and made the cut look really natural. I've been a fan of hers since then. I obviously believe in her soooo much that I not only entrusted her with my own hair, but with my friends also. (you're welcome Rebecca =P).... Really good quality hair for a great price. Was debating on giving this place a shot or not but at $12 for men, I couldn't refuse. The lady knew what she was doing and did a better job on my hair than most other places I've been to, seems like she knows how to deal with asian hair. She nearly made me sh*t myself when she grabbed the clippers and ran it up my sideburns without warning or even asking (I'm pretty anal when it comes to my hair) but I decided to wait how it turned out. the brother used to cut my hair but I sneak to the salon when he's off now. Cindy's the only one I have tried that makes me satisfied my look just after the hair is been cut. She gets it done right but I agree she doesn't have good customer service. She sits you down andd ask what you want and starts cutting your hair.
