My wife was craving udon noodles and found this on Yelp. We visited Japan last year which is where discovered many noodle shops. When felt like we stepped into a portal that teleported us to Tokyo. Got the zaru udon and one of the modern udons. We also ordered appetizers, we got the potstickers and the chicken karage. I really enjoyed the udon! It was so chewy and fresh. The tempura was also great. The sauce for the tempura could've been a little saltier but it was very refreshing. The dumplings coudlve been a little crispier but the purple cabbage was unique. A hidden gem of a restaurant and incredibly deserving of five stars. If I could give them more stars, I would. Upon walking in I was greeted by a kind and attentive server. She immediately brought me water and a menu. She also graciously answered my questions on different soup bases and ensured my glass of ice cold water was refilled consistently throughout the meal. Cozy hidden Japanese udon restaurant in Roswell. At first I thought it was something like Marugame udon but it's not. They offer more than the traditional udon, but fusion dishes. Love the cold Bukkake udon in Japanese styles. This one is very refreshing and comforting especially in the summer. Cold udon just done right, cold and chewy. Pescatore is a modern fusion Italian seafood udon. Interesting but I guess it's my least favor. The homemade tomato sauce can be a little thicker and umami to bring out the flavor. Also the udon is overcooked, it became too soft and loose the al dente. Assorted tempuras are standard. I like all assorted vegetables and shrimp tempuras. We had high hopes for Circle Noodle. The Zenbu Udon, which comes with everything, looked kinda meh. It came with a bunch of different types of karaage, which were a bit bland and not worth it. The udon was bland as well. They were understaffed, which made ordering and getting our food take a long time. For the two of us, it took over an hour to order and eat our food. Kakuni Udon-The pork belly is braised until it basically falls apart, the broth is slightly smokey and slightly sweet...noodles were cooked perfectly. Pescatore-All of the seafood was fresh, the sauce was light but packed with flavor. Veggies were tender and soaked up the broth...This was probably my favorite dish in terms of flavor and variety over the course of eating it. Zenbu Udon-Simple and understated. This dish isn't going to wow you or punch you in the face with flavor. The ingredients are as they should be, so if you are looking for a break from all the spice and heat and just want to enjoy simplicity-this is your udon. I might have been overly excited about this udon place, so the expectation was super high. We ordered Zenbu udons (means all, and we wanted all), but when it came out, it didn't look like it was everything. Kinda plain looking bowl of udon with tempura on the side. Pretty tasty but not super special, and I wasn't a fan of the purple leek dumplings. Chicken karaage and tempura were pretty standard. We also got curry udon, bukkake, and inaniwa udon to go. I ate udon for a week! The curry udon was definitely the best one. All in all I love this place, I would just venture to other udons rather than the Zenbu for me. I've seen Circle Noodle on Yelp ever since it opened and haven't gotten the chance to eat here until now. I wasn't entirely sure it was the same owner as Circle Sushi when we arrived but I was still excited all the same. Located in the same plaza as plenty of well known restaurants such as Taqueria Tsunami and Foundation Social Eatery, Circle Noodle has their work cut out for them. They close after lunch but we arrived an hour before closing at 2:30. There were still people eating and quite a few people came in even after we started ordering. We started with the Purple Kari Kari Gyoza, which are purple cabbage filled dumplings. These are beautifully fried and filled with a gorgeous purple color. Definitely a super insta-worthy but also tasty snack. You can get them in orders of 6 or 10, and come with a dumpling dipping sauce. The udon carbonara is exactly what you would think it is. Carbonara, except made with udon noodles and topped with a poached egg. Unfortunately, my egg was still a little cold, so instead of a nice pop and ooze of egg yolk, it was a cold congealed yolk. Even so, it didn't ruin the flavor of the Carbonara. I gets a bit heavy at the end so I had trouble finishing it. However, it's a tasty surprise. The Soft Shell Crab comes in an amazing display of an entire soft shell crab tempura atop a bowl of udon noodle soup. The broth is light, but fragrant and delicious - it helped wash down the richness of the carbonara. I could have sipped on that all day. Overall, I would totally come back to Circle Noodle for more of those udon options. I read that another Yelp reviewer wrote this place should be called Circle Udon and I completely agree. Please note only the only type of noodles served here are Udon noodles! They have a small menu, other items include assorted tempura and grilled fish. My boyfriend and I decided on the Nabeyaki Udon with assorted tempura and Kakuni Udon: The Nabeyaki Udon's broth was described as udon in regular chicken broth with spinach, cubed pieces of unflavored chicken, and one shittake mushroom. Nothing special, I could probably whip up something very similar or better at home. The tempura was perfect though! The assortment included two large shrimp, okra, pumpkin slice, and sweet potato -- very yummy; and we were given plenty of dipping sauce for it which I appreciated very much. The Kakuni Udon was very different, haha. The sauce was gelatinous, very opposite of the dish's "not as greasy" description. It did include two generous portions of pork belly, but the large fat layers were not very appetizing and were left in the bowl unfinished. The service was okay. Our waiter didn't seem like she wanted to be there and my feeling of being a bother stayed through the entire visit. Not a good feeling or vibe to give off to customers. I'm not an expert on authentic Japanese udon but the flavors and quality of food was amazing! I stopped in on a Monday afternoon. I ordered the Nabeyaki udon with assorted tempura and the teriyaki and rice with chicken. The udon came piping hot in a clay pot with the assorted tempura served on the side with a dipping sauce. The teriyaki was served with diced chicken, onions and corn with the rice on the side in the same dish. The presentation of the udon was lovely. Everything tasted fresh. I was a big fan of the tempura. It came with 2 pieces of shrimp and assorted veggies. It was perfectly cooked. Also ordered the purple gyoza. That was tasty, too. The prices were good for the portion that i receivedof the belly meats. From the owner of Circle Sushi comes another Circle restaurant in North Fulton: Circle Noodle. This small noodle shop opened in Roswell in April 2017 and, unlike the numerous ramen joints that have opened in metro Atlanta over the past several years, it specializes in a different type of noodle: udon. Circle Noodle's extensive udon menu makes it unique to metro Atlanta (at least, at the time of writing this review). It merits a special trip if you're a fan of these thick wheat flour noodles. You can find Circle Noodle in the Holcomb Bridge Connexion shopping center in between Foundation Social Eatery and Taqueria Tsunami. It's not far from Georgia 400 exit 7 (Holcomb Bridge Rd). Unlike a lot of ramen restaurants in the Atlanta area, Circle Noodle is small and compact, sort of like a noodle shop you might find in Japan. This is a casual place and seating is limited to about 25-30 customers. The interior design is contemporary and very simple. There's a semi-open kitchen and a TV mounted just inside the storefront. There are over 20 different kinds of udon on the menu. Most are priced at $9-16 each. They're categorized as modern (e.g. niku udon and kakuni udon, both featuring Berkshire kurobuta pork), traditional (e.g. kake - sanuki square-shaped udon), inaniwa (a thinner, smoother type of udon), and cold noodles (served chilled). Toppings, $1-3 each, include soft-boiled and poached eggs, grated Japanese yam, and horenso (blanched spinach). Along with udon noodles, Circle Noodle also offers a small assortment of apps ($4.50-8.00 each) like edamame and whole cucumbers pickled with Japanese plum and sushi vinegar, assorted tempura ($4-8 per order), and milkshake desserts ($5 each). There wasn't a single item I didn't like and, while nothing in particular knocked my socks off (except for perhaps the green tea milkshake), I thought the dishes were solid all-around. The purple kari kari gyoza is available in 6, 8, and 10-piece orders for $5, $6.50, and $8, respectively. These potstickers aren't served like you'd typically see. The dumplings become attached together as a part of the frying process. You'll see hints of purple from the cabbage. Our dumplings were savory, crispy in certain places, and came with a side of chili oil, which was yummy. If you like dumplings, these are worth getting. The agedashi tofu was A-OK. Our order came with 4 decent-sized pieces of tofu, gently fried. This was a light dish and a nice shareable app. The udon carbonara, which is a fusion dish, was surprisingly delicious. This was more of a pasta dish than anything with udon noodles serving as the pasta. No broth, just lots of cheese along with slices of bacon that have been cut. Patak Meat Products, which is where the bacon comes from, is a local meat seller that's been in metro Atlanta for decades. Overall, this is a rather tasty pasta dish where the smooth and chewy udon noodles make it distinct. The chicken curry udon was hearty and comforting. If you're looking for a substantial meal, this is the one to get. Not only is the curry sauce (broth/stew) relatively thick and flavorful, but the bowl comes with plenty of chopped potatoes and corn too. It's hot and filling and seems ideal during cold weather. The curry's flavor is mildly sweet and robust. Nakeyaki udon is Japanese comfort food. It's served in a clay pot. To me, the star of this dish is the onsen tamago. This is an egg slow-cooked at a relatively low temperature. The result is a soft, delicate egg with a smooth, velvety, and custard-like texture. The onsen tamago I tried was cooked to perfection. And of course, the udon noodles themselves were great too in the nabeyaki, curry, and carbonara varieties. They were fresh, soft, appetizing, and delectably chewy. Ask your server for shichimi, a Japanese spice mixture, available upon request. I like to add it to my udon. The tempura served on the side included items like shrimp, okra, eggplant, and (I think) kabocha which is a winter squash (Japanese pumpkin). The tempura had a light, airy batter and was served with a dipping sauce (tentsuyu). The green tea milkshake was outstanding. It was creamy and delicious. I highly recommend it. The carbonara was smooth and creamy, the sauce was cheesy and buttery. The nabeyaki udon was so good. I don't really know how to describe what happened. I was hungry, wanted some Asian noodle soup, and saw it was close. I walk in and smell something akin to a grandma's home right before dinner - if I had lived in Japan. What was presented to me was a small basket of perfectly fried vegetables and shrimp, and a clay pot boiling with delightful liquid and noodles. And then I tasted it. I think I blacked out. I walked out with the most pleasant feeling of fullness, warmth, and child-like satisfaction, reminded in that moment that food could be *that* good. I will be returning. Many times over. read more
