We were looking for a BBQ place that was still open on Sunday (5/21) and we found City Barbeque. We are SO happy we did. Timothy was extremely helpful, funny, and kind. He offered us a taste of the brisket, brought us to go boxes for our leftovers, and answered all our questions. Loved it when I lived here, every visit home means a stop at City BBQ. Slow cooked from 5am every day, the flavor is all inside the juicy brisket, pulled pork, ribs, chicken... but they have their sauce down pat too. But it's that spice rub that roasts the succulent flavor deep down, I haven't tasted a BBQ joint that compares. Portions are most ample, I often skip the bun on sandwiches because there's no way to hold it all together. I also make sure they give me 'extra bark' from the outside. I went in with high hopes for this place as it came highly recommended. It wasn't terrible, but they brag about their "delectable renditions of the best regional BBQ styles America has to offer" and I don't feel like it lived up to the 'Que you'll find in the deep south. I had the pulled pork sandwich and my main complaint is that the meat wasn't as flavorful as it could have been. Aside from that the meat was juicy, their Regular sauce was a little too sweet, and the lemonade was pretty good. I also got a side of corn bread that was probably the best part of the meal. I think they are attempting to take off on Carolina barb-b-que but not there yet. I had pulled pork and husband had full rack of baby backs. Pork was blend, definitely needed sauce and the ribs were dry (not sure how long they were sitting there). Nice option they had was crock pots with the b-b-que sauce heated. I really don't think hush puppies are a side. Two or so should be included with the meal. I wanted hush puppies but not 8 of them! Im being somewhat generous giving three stars. Here on a business trip I turned to the good people of Columbus on Yelp to help guide me to a good BBQ place. I WAS VERY EXCITED, to see the pictures and reviews for city BBQ, and couldn't believe the delicious smell coming from the place upon arrival. I ordered pulled pork sandwich corn pudding macaroni and cheese. I'll start with the good, the corn pudding was absolutely amazing and if I were to ever go back to this restaurant it would be solely to get this item. Now the bad, the macaroni and cheese though very cheesy, lacked any flavor comma the pulled pork was on a typical hamburger bun that was slightly hard almost still, and the pork was very dry and also lacking any substance or flavor the only thing that saved this sandwich where the for BBQ sauces that were pretty good. All and all I'm giving this restaurant three stars only because I love the corn pudding so much but as far as the barbecue goes I would only write them a 2-star and I definitely would not be back read more

I've been going to this place for years. In the beginning, I found the food pretty good. Not so much anymore. The quality seems to me to have eroded in recent years. The last order of ribs I got there was dried out. The last order of brisket was more like pot roast with gobs of fat on it. The pulled pork is still OK. But a couple days ago, I finally hit the last straw. I bought a 1/2 chicken for take out, and drove straight home for lunch. It was OK - moist, if a bit bland. But I noticed it was not very warm. 24 hours later I was running to the bathroom every half hour or so, and that has continued for another 24 hours so far. People from the south might argue that they have better BBQ where they are from, but this is no doubt the best BBQ in Columbus. I have been to several weddings where they used City BBQ as catering, and i was so thankful to have good food to eat instead of that sick generic wedding food. Checked out this place with the hubs while visiting Columbus because it appeared on best of Columbus 2015 list. Admittedly we have both lived in the south and in Texas so our BBQ standards are a bit high. Hubs ordered the brisket sandwich and it was mediocre in taste. But was vastly improved upon by adding city barbecue's awesome sauce sauces. I ordered the smoked chicken leg and thigh and it was delicious!!! Side salads were great. We've had take out from this location twice over the past month. Each time, the meat has been tender and the baked beans spicy and good. We really like the ribs and beef brisket sandwiches. We always order a full slab of ribs with 2 sides. It's made slow cook, with good taste and not too salty. Never tried ordering anything else. I've been to Cincy and Cleveland, but this is the best place (especially at this location) for ribs i found in Ohio. They also have 6 selections of sauces, also available in heated condition. I always go with firely mixed with normal. I suggested this place to many friends and they love it. Two of friends even bring thier parents to this place. Split a Judge's sampler with my father and had enough to take home leftovers. Was most impressed by ribs, slaw, and pulled pork. Liked that it comes with cornbread and Texas toast so you don't have to waste your 2 side dish choices on bread! The sauce selection was excellent and made it so you could try many flavor combos with the meat (recommend Brush Fire sauce if you like spice). I loved the feel of the place when I first approached; beat-up wooden tables, loud music, and employees wearing jeans. My kind of place. I ordered something simple-a bbq chicken sandwich and green beans. The chicken was wonderful, and it came on a floured roll that was killer. However, the tastiness of the sanwich was somewhat tempered by the obviously canned green beans. They were doctored up with pepper and bacon, but still definitely from a can. I love their brisket, pulled pork, the cornbread, the slaw, the barbecue...I would eat here weekly if I could afford it. They seriously know how to do brisket. It's falling-apart tender, mouth-watering and nothing but meat. I know that last bit sounds a little weird, but I'm one of those people who freaks out when my sandwich has knots of fat and gristle in it, and I've never run into that here. They give you enough of their delicious barbecue that we keep some in the fridge for a week or so afterwards to spread the goodness on other foods. Having been raised in Ohio, I never really understood the attraction of barbecue until a trip to the Carolinas, and when I came back, I feared that I would never have such food again, but then I found City Barbecue. I live near this location and can smell the meat smoking all night! If you're looking for a somewhat healthy option, the smoked chicken is tender, juicy, and delicious. Seasonal sides (usually made from local produce) like cucumbers and onions and coleslaw are the reason I keep coming back. And live music in the dining area always convinces me to stay awhile when I planned on carrying out. Food is OK but really angry about hidden charges. They just raised their prices about 8% earlier this year, 2014, at a time when the economy is still recovering from the recession. Then a few months after the latest price increase, they started charging for getting a sandwich on a different type of bread!! Some times I get sandwiches on hamburger buns and sometimes on "Texas Toast." There never used to be any difference in price. The last time I visited to get takeout, I got a sandwich on Texan toast and found a 79 cent extra charge on my bill after I got home. WTF !?? Am I supposed to believe that 2 pieces of bread really costs 79 cents more than 2 halves of a hamburger bun ? When I went back to complain and ask why this charge isn't shown on the big menu board, I was told that the cashier should have advised me about the extra charge. Well, she didn't, and it's a violation of consumer protection laws to impose undisclosed charges, so I got a refund of the overcharge. I doubt that these hidden charges will show up on the menu anytime soon, even though management went to the trouble of reprogramming their cash registers to add the "bread substitution charge" to the bill. Management's penchant for nickle-and-timing their customers will leave their customers with a bad taste in their mouths, despite the generally good BBQ. Also, this is a local chain restaurant, so the same hidden charges are being imposed citywide, not just the Henderson Road location. read more

We have been here three times since moving from Chicago this summer. With two kids it is nice that the service is so fast and we can eat in a relaxed environment without worrying too much about our kids being perfectly behaved (although they always are because they love this place!). Last time we went to City BBQ there was a bit of a confusion on our order and they charged for the wrong sandwiches and also forgot our desserts. They did fix the problem after we discovered it, but the service just seemed very unorganized for a weekday night. The food is still delicious and our kids actually clean their plates but hoping for more consistent service to go with the consistently yummy food! read more
