Been thinking of stopping in to this BBQ chain. Low expectations. Smelled good on entry. Open kitchen, where you can see the stainless cooking away. Hood suggests some smoke, but doubt there will be much. Got pulled pork with slaw and collards, with a tea, for $12. Sat on the patio, at a picnic table. Yay patios!! BBQ style is pork butt, smoked and pulled in a stainless. Lots of sauce options. I understand this place is out of the Midwest, so maybe Midwest BBQ? Pan BBQ? Anyway, food came (they called my name and I got it). No puppies, but I guess you could get them as a side. I wanted to hate this place and I wasn't disappointed. Pork was pretty flavorless. No smoky flavor at all. I guess I was supposed to slather it was sauce. Slaw was just shredded cabbage with vinegar. The collards were spicy and excellent. It was a pleasant enough and cheap enough place to grab a quick bite, but if you want real BBQ head over to Johnsons on 98, where the BBQ is smoked over real wood. City BBQ in Durham is now open and I was one of the first people to try out a tasty meal there! Yelp Elites were invited to one of their preview meals and I attended a Thursday lunch session. Corey W. , the Regional Marketing Manager of all the City BBQ locations in North Carolina greeted me and my family of 3 with a warm smile. She thanked us for coming and advised us to go right up to the register and order. On the way to the register was a bucket filled with crayons and coloring sheets that my daughter was able to grab for entertainment at the table. We were advised that we could order anything from the menu but Ribs and 2 sides were allowed. Prior to ordering, I was able to sample some side dishes because everything looked and smelled so good that it was hard to decide. I ordered 2 meats ( beef brisket, pulled pork ) and 2 sides ( green beans and baked beans) .My absolute fave was the brisket paired with the baked beans. I am still seeing those 2 dishes in my dreams . The brisket was cooked to perfection! On the table were various sauces but there was also a self serve fixings bar for all your BBQ needs. I am so excited to have another viable option on the corner of Fayetteville and 54! I went for one of City Barbecue's training night's and the staff is definitely off to a great start. We were asked multiple times how were doing despite the restaurant being counter service, very clean, and they had done a great job preparing for the whole event. I loved the decorations (despite the clear UNC alliangance). Menu features were creatively written and displayed on butcher paper, condiments were neatly stored in hardware drawers and to-go boxes were easily accessible for the extras you are sure to have with the generous portions. We got a variety of things to try since it was our first time coming, the higlights included pork (I would go without a bun as it didn't add anything and I am usually a sandwich fan), the brisket, potato salad, fried okra (lightly bread in corn meal and not fried!), and baked beans. The pulled chicken was probably our least favorite of our selections. You can get two meats, toast, and two sidesfor 15 dollars with generous portions not a bad deal! If I went back the mac and cheese looked pretty killer. We also, of course, sampled the barbecue sauces. I am usually a purist. Vinegar base all the way, surprisingly, here I would whole heatedly endorse their sweet sauce. It has a nice smoke taste and it is not over powering. Surprises all around. I am so glad I signed up in time for City BBQ's soft opening tonight. It opens for good on Sunday, but they invited some guests for lunch and dinner to try it out early. And for free! The restaurant is very nice inside and has a patio outside which will be perfect for the summer! The staff are super friendly and helpful with the menu. We were allowed to order pretty much anything we wanted off the menu. This included whatever sides you wanted, a drink, and even desserts! The staff also encouraged tastings of the sides while you were ordering. Super friendly and I couldn't believe how generous they were! I chose the two meat sampler - the brisket and pulled chicken. It comes with Texas toast down the middle. My two sides were the slaw and the hushpuppies. And for dessert: banana pudding. The brisket was delicious - a must order. They really fill the plate with meat. The pulled chicken was just okay and I definitely liked the brisket a lot more. I tried a variety of sides as my friends and I shared. The hushpuppies were good and crispy. The slaw was my favorite and has a good taste to it. Fried okra and green beans were also very tasty. You can't go wrong with ordering banana pudding for dessert! Only complaint was that there were too much wafers in it. Be sure to try the different BBQ sauces. The best is the sweet BBQ sauce. We seem to have the worst service with this franchise at both the Durham and Cary location. The Durham location is notorious for poor deliver on what you paid for and serving it up with nasty attitudes and awful attitudes. Check your carry out orders before you depart the premises. They will also short you in the serving quantity. Because you have to return to the restaurant now furious that 2-3items are missing from your order., the staff could care less. They won't apologize nor offer you a free drink to minimize your inconvenience and your family at home still waiting to be served. Dont bother to share your disappointment with any of the managers as they don't give a hoot about you being a satisfied customer. They will join in with the staff and talk bad about you before you hit the exit door as if you are the problem. And the black female manager on nights has the worst attitude ever. She rolls her eyes and once refused to come to the counter to address my concerns. She was forced to the counter on my last visit because I was charged for food that I didn't receive and didn't discover until I was home. She was still rude and unprofessional. I wrote the franchise owners on multiple occasions and absolutely no response. They figure there are more satisfied customers than not, so no skin off their backs to offer good, not great, but good decent customer service. From the moment you walk in the door with the big black board above the cash registers with all the suggestions and recommendations starred. They have quite the variety as well from sandwiches to platters, lots of sides, a great dessert selection. They had a great indoor seating area but an even better outdoor patio area. My favorite part was all the sauces they had! They have about 6 different sauces that varied from a tangy vinegar to a sweet sweet BBQ. Returning on the same day of the week and about the same time as the previous visit, the experience was much improved. Customer service was markedly better. The cashier was welcoming, and the server even said, "Thank you kindly. Is there anything else you need?" as she brought my order. She was genuine, too. You go up to the register, place your order, and wait for your food at the counter. This is a chain - they have 46 locations - but you'd never know it. The food is legit. Things I really liked: the brisket and the pulled pork were REALLY good. The ribs were REALLY good. The collard greens and the baked beans were REALLY good. The cornbread was very good. They have a ton of sauces you can use and they are all really good. My favorites were the spicy bbq, the bourbon, and the peach/habanero (so interesting). I'd certainly go back here and just not eat breakfast or lunch that day to prepare. You will have the meat sweats after you are done and you'll likely take something home with you too. Staff was super nice and accommodating. The bill was reasonable as well. No real downsides here unless you want a fancypants place that has a waiter that comes and takes your order. We ordered and my order was incorrect when it finally came - 1 smoked sausage on a hot dog bun instead of the 2 smoked sausages on Texas toast. So I have lived in the Triangle for a few weeks and have already been here three times. Let me say - the staff is my favorite part about this place. They are incredibly friendly and great to interact with (except this one woman at the register the other night when I went, but let's assume she was having a bad day). I've never had such great interactions with people at a counter service place. This place is an excellent value, the sauces are DOPE, ribs are insane, and I just love coming here. Why 4 stars? The mac n cheese has a lot of room for improvement and that's kind of an important item. Creamy cole slaw could use something too. Baked beans are unreal and the corn pudding is pretty excellent. I tried City Barbeque last week and placed a large order as I was moving in and needed leftovers. The 5oz of brisket I received (ordered 8oz) was thick cut (which is fine) but almost entirely fat. The 6oz pulled pork (ordered 8oz) was good. The half chicken I didn't order (ordered 8oz pulled chicken) was okay. The Macaroni and cheese tasted like Velveeta. The baked beans tasted like they came from a can. The fried okra looked like dog food as none of the breading was cooked and did not stick to any of the okra. I tried three of their sauces - the bourbon one was good, the other two awful and watery. From a $33 order I had two half meals. Pretty disappointing. read more

Today was a good day of eating. This was our first time at this location and it was great. The service was excellent. Xavier came to our table to help us decide what to eat. We went up to the counter and were given samples for almost everything. This was a deciding factor for the meal. We selected the "motherload", and that's what you get. We were able to taste, ( and take home) each protein. Had 6 sides to choose also. The gumbo was good but a little salty. The corn pudding was new to me and I enjoyed it very much. I have been meaning to check out City Barbeque since they opened near me in Huntersville, so today I was returning from a business trip to Raleigh, saw this on the map, and tried it for lunch. I didn't love it. This afternoon I sampled some reviews here, and see they mostly are positive. I should know better than to try franchises. They inevitably aim for a lower common denominator than I look for. I have eaten at several of the more famed Carolina BBQ joints and the food at CB does not come close in my opinion. The floors are slippery! I think a good floor clean is in order. The grease has been spread around and it could be dangerous. But the food was good! I got the pulled pork sandwich.
