I had barbecue in Bourbon bookmarks but when I went to Colin to go order they said it would be an hour and a half wait. I was out in Indianapolis on a work trip picking up some materials and I needed to eat ASAP, I mapped to what looked like the best barbecue in the area and unfortunately I ended up at City barbeque. This place is a total Yelp trap, it is the worst barbecue I have had outside of California. They should rename City barbecue to California cafeteria barbecue because that's exactly what it tastes like, cafeteria food from the wrong Coast. I ordered a brisket sandwich, they do not include any sides but they will give you a dollar off if you order two sides, unfortunately I decided to order two sides the collard greens and the mac and cheese. The mac and cheese was terrible I had to return it to the counter and ask the exchange it out for some coleslaw, it's not very often I get mac and cheese that's so bad that it's not edible. The brisket was the most depressing land try brisket that I can think of ever eating. The barbecue sauce here tastes like something that came off the discount shelf at Ollie's bargain market, in fact you have a better chance of getting good barbecue sauce at Ollie's then you'll find at City barbeque. I hadn't eaten in 10 hours and I was on a schedule so I ate the cafeteria food and I left $17 poorer and pissed off, I wish I had gone anywhere else but City barbeque what a rip off- the barbecue police should arrest these fools and lock them up for life without parole, calling this crap "barbecue" is disrespectful to every legitimate barbecue operation in existence. read more

When asked if I had special instructions, I wrote 'no sauces." That was added to all four orders. Guess what? Four containers were in the bag. We like the sauce on the cooked product, but we don't like the sauce to add. What a waste. I've already shared how much I like the pulled chicken and the brisket sandwiches. This time, I also ordered the pulled pork sandwich. All three are the tastiest sandwiches ever. And the price of each is lower than comparable restaurants. I stopped going to the iupui location a year ago. I ordered carry out, my orders were messed up a time or two, but nothing serious. There were two occasions they forgot the bbq sauce, really?!!! The last time since I had to drive back for sauce I asked them to replace my entire $60 meal with HOT food and bbq sauce. Wanted to give credit where credit is due! We ordered over $1000 worth of lunch for our warehouse workers today. We placed the order a day in advanced. We picked up at noon today and everything was ready hot and fresh! Our employees were silent during eating because of how great everything was. City BBQ in Avon is one of our go to Friday family dinner spots! We have been here lots of times and we have always consistently had great service. It's one of our go to spots because the food is delicious and is ready to go quickly. The staff is always so friendly and engaging as well. Props to the sweet lady who is always there in the evening who has always been sweet to our family! One thing to keep in mind is that this is pretty much a self service type of establishment. You go to the counter and order your food. Pick it up then grab everything you need from the counters. Drinks, silverware, sauces, etc. My daughter and I normally order the Chicken Breast/Wing Combo with two sides. Mac and Cheese and potato salad for me. Mac and Cheese and fries for her. My husband orders the two meat combo (pulled pork and beef brisket) with two sides. He likes Mac and Cheese and corn bread. Our son orders the pulled pork sandwich with fries and corn bread. We did door dash for Mother's Day. We had never had city bbq before so we didn't know what to expect. We ordered a pounds of beef brisket and a pound of pulled pork. Both were tender and delicious. For sides we got baked beans and Mac and cheese. The baked beans were hands down the best baked beans we've had. The seasoning was perfect! The Mac n cheese was just ok. My wife and I were invited here by our daughter's family for lunch, so we met in the business's private lot and headed on in. I had read some reviews, but those were somewhat dated as the menu board I saw in front of me had fewer options than some photos on this business's Yelp page. I had planned on getting a Carolina pulled pork which comes with the cole slaw on top, but that wasn't offered. Instead, I went with a "naked" brisket and added two sides: cole slaw and green beans with bacon. The place has an order counter to your left as you walk in and then a number bench/tables (ours rocked every time someone leaned on it) and some 4 tops in the dining area. You place your order and then pick a table. When it is ready, you go retrieve it from near the order counter. Sauces and sodas are around the corner from the ordering area, so I grabbed a couple sauces to try them out. I didn't see my favorite sauce: a Carolina mustard. I grabbed something similar in color and a Cherrywine sauce for something new. The yellowish sauce didn't have any of the mustard flavors and was disappointing. The Cherrywine simply didn't pair well with the brisket. Be aware that if you order your sandwich "naked" (no bun), they don't have table knives sitting out by the forks. So, you have to spear it with your fork and bite it or use your fingers. There isn't any service on the floor to even ask if they have knives available. The meat did have a smokey taste and stayed moist on its own. It was generally tender, but not "fall apart" tender. The green beans with bacon was peppered and salted and had an overall pleasing taste. The beans are cooked thoroughly, not al dente. Although I liked them, my wife thought they had too much pepper. The vinegar based slaw was a pleasant surprise. It had more crunch than I expected and had a bit of tartness instead of being overly sweet like some places. It was sliced much larger than most places I've been too, so it didn't look like it would work as a traditional Carolina topping. My wife seemed to like her food better than I, so I might give this another 1/2 star based on her experience. But for me, there was not a single thing that stood out to draw me back. This place has my vote!! Everything I put in my mouth was so freakin delicious it required a little hummm and dance while chewing. I'm not a turkey fan (unless it's the dark meat) but their turkey is so moist and delicious i couldn't get enough. A few of my favorites were the hush puppies, green beans with bacon, corn pudding(which I never had but wow! That was good) and the Chocolate cake. Got take out through a delivery service and one entire entree was missing. The full rack of ribs that we did get had big clumps of spice rub. A mouthful of rub is never a tasty thing. Another visit to City BBQ...and another disappointment. I love the City BBQ Chocolate Cake. I was craving chocolate cake...so I decided on making the 1.5 HOUR round trip from my house to City BBQ and get dinner to go. I placed a simple order via the app: Pulled Pork Mac and Cheese Hush Puppies Chocolate Cake 1 Large Drink I arrived 5 minutes before my scheduled pickup time. They brought the food right out and I drove the 45 minutes back home. I got home and realized they shorted me the piece of chocolate cake I was craving. I double checked my receipt...I was charged for it. I called back in and they said they would put a credit on my account...but they seemed like it was no big deal...and they were unapologetic. 04/23/22 great day for our daughters wedding! Not only was it the best weather day of the year but the venue (Memories Wedding Barn and Events in Clayton, IN) and the food were nothing less than awesome. City BBQ catered the event and the positive complements about the food kept coming from our guests. We chose to have a catered buffet and the food was served out of cast iron which was such a compliment to the wedding venue. The turkey and pulled pork along with the fantastic BBQ sauces were a hit. The sides, salads, and drinks gave us a well rounded meal and no one left hungry. In fact the little "Late Night Snack" goodie bag for the Bride and Groom was a nice touch. I can't put my finger on this chain. Always pricey, but good bbq always is. But then some food items aren't that great so it becomes a non-value. I never feel excited leaving this place after eating. It's "good" most of the time I guess. Just...not great nor any leftovers. I would recommend Kings Ribs over this chain. Better everything there for same price and King's has that homemade care put into it. Just my $0.2 P.S. I always have major heartburn after eating here unlike almost all other bbq joints. I'm sad to say that after years of wanting to try it, City Barbeque was just so so. I had the half slab of ribs, which were actually quite good but a little fatty in places and not baby backs (which are the best) leaving a few bone and connective pieces to work your way around. Where CB fell short was on the sides, cleanliness and service. Wife ordered the creamy cole slaw but got the vinegar instead. No big deal, took it back and exchanged it for what we ordered and what was on the receipt. Got the creamy cole slaw and it tasted a little sour and funky and not sweet at all. Went to grab some sauce from the walk of sauce and every single bottle I picked up left an increasingly sticky gross slime on my hand from the last dude that touched it. That's gross. Probably most surprising was the price. Almost $50 for two kids meals and two adult entrees seems a bit much. read more

Color me disappointed ... we went here for birthday dinner and it wasn't that great of an experience. I was so excited because of all of the reviews but the experience was lacking. We got here around 7:30 and they were out of multiple thIngs which I understand but we already paid and weren't notified until after. So that was kind of a bummer that the communication was off. The sauce station is pretty cool and it's the same sauces on both sides btw. Moving onto the food, the collard greens were unfortunately under seasoned and they were what I was most excited for I didn't care for the Mac and cheese either it was a little cold so it was a bit clumpy but the brisket was good. It's not my first choice and maybe it was just an off day but it's hard to be excited when half the stuff you want is out and the other half is underwhelming. I love The Judge's Sampler and I probably get it once a month for my family's weekly takeout night. The Sampler comes with ribs, chicken, brisket, pulled pork, your choice of 2 sides, corn bread and Texas toast. To round it out and also mainly because my family loves sides as much as mains, I get the 3 sides platter as well.
