My favorite BBQ place in the world (The Shed in Biloxi, AL) set my standards super high for BBQ, and I was missing it and craving some BBQ so I decided to check Yelp and City BBQ came recommended. I'm a firm believer in trying a little bit of everything, so we ordered the Motherload (also because I couldn't make up my mind which sides to try, let's be honest) which comes with brisket, pulled pork, turkey, half slab of ribs, half chicken, two sausages, 6 sides, cornbread and Texas toast.... It's enough food for 2 people for 3 days, yay leftovers! For sides I picked the baked beans with brisket, Mac n' cheese, creamy slaw, potato salad, collards with pork, & corn pudding. We also added a basket of hush puppies & a pint of banana pudding. Every single meat was incredible... The sausages were a great addition to scrambled eggs for breakfast the next morning especially! But seriously everything was tender, flavorful, moist and absolutely delicious. My fave was the brisket & ribs, & the hubby loved the pork & chicken! We both picked the winning side to be the baked beans with brisket (and I'm not even a die hard bean fan), they were rich, sweet and SUPER flavorful. Other notable favorites were the hush puppies.... I could eat them for days, the corn pudding which I'm a huge sucker for, the super flavorful potato salad, and creamy slaw! We got the sweet BBQ & low co which is orange and like a thick bbq honey mustard with a hint of vinegar and a nice kick, and the sweet was sweet, but the highlight was the pieces of soft sweet onion you got that had been cooked down in the sauce... It's the little things! The banana pudding took a classic and went further by using a Nilla wafer crumble that tasted like it had been cooked don in brown sugar and butter... Ugh. All the BBQ meats are good - our favorites are the pulled pork and brisket - but you seriously can't go wrong here. The sides are also consistently fresh and delicious. Our regulars are the vinegar cole slaw and green beans, which are prepared southern style with pork and onions. The hushpuppies are a MUST! Kids and adults are all happy with City BBQ. This week, we ordered curbside (#quarantine days). We placed our order in the online system and included special instructions on how to divide the order (we were picking for ourselves and my parents). It's a plus that you can pay ahead online to avoid contact. Everything was done correctly, the food was hot and delivered to our car. We opened the trunk and the server put the bags in and made sure they were secure. Excellent service. I ended up having lunch there before noon on Tuesday March 2nd on a beautiful sunny day. The entry to restaurant is accessible to everyone, there were no stairs, and a small like ramp on the sidewalk. I ordered the half slab ribs, along with mac & cheese. My friend had the Nashville hot chicken sandwich and french fries. It wasn't packed, socially distance, clean, staff were wearing their masks, someone brought out our food fast, and it was fresh as well as hot. It was my first time getting the ribs usually I get the pulled pork sandwich which was always delicious when I had it. The ribs weren't tough, didn't fall off the bone, very meaty, and fulfilling. The cashier was very helpful on the menu when I asked her a question. Plus, the restaurant is in a great location, and not too far from downtown Indianapolis. I have had the pleasure of speaking with the owner/founder on at least 2 occasions, and he is just the nicest guy that takes a genuine interest in his employees and patrons. OMGEEE the food. + Meats are smoked daily in house. + Sides are all made from scratch, in house, often using family recipes + From scratch peach cobbler -- the best $4.99 I have ever spent. I cannot be trusted to not devour the whole (large) serving in a single sitting...but it also makes the best breakfast. Just sayin'. + Rib Bone Tuesday's = $1.35 per bone + that Brushfire BBQ sauce is the perfect blend of sweet and spicy...I put it on EVERYTHING. + sampler platters allow you to get a good amount of different meats to try them out + get the Cowbell sandwich at some point in your life...after trying the amazing brisket of course + get the sweet potato casserole if they have it... it's seasonal... and totally worth the wait! I was lucky enough to participate Yelp Elite's "Glutton Gathering" at City Barbeque last month, which was in-cred-i-ble. Still, I couldn't help but feel a tad skeptical, questioning if the staff had pulled out all of the stops and put their best foot forward in order to have us say nice things about the joint. Could they pull it off on an ordinary day? I came in on a Monday night and was immediately greeted by the jolliest cashier ever, who was happy to welcome me back and provide recommendations on what I should eat. Seeing that I had already tried (and loved) the smoked turkey, I chose that on Texas toast. My intention was to see if the turkey, a protein that dries out easily, would again be just as smoky and succulent as last time. Oh man...not only did I yet again bite into a smoky, succulent, peppery turkey breast that had been carved right in front of me, but also I was able to enjoy the buttery grilled Texas toast that was situated above and below it. There was only one way to top such a prime sandwich: smother it in BBQ sauce. My personal preference is to combine the mustard and the sweet BBQ sauces, which results in a drippy mess, but sometimes, you have to make sacrifices for a fine meal. (Suggestion: sit on the stools facing 10th Street so no one has to see your face and hands covered in BBQ sauce). As if those thick slices of carved smoked turkey and Texas toast weren't enough, I still had two sides to try, the potato salad and the vinegar slaw. What's so amazing about the potato salad (again) is that it has the consistency of a smashed potato dish but with the creamy, sweet additions of egg and mayo. Plus, you have more sweetness and tang coming from the crunchy coleslaw, providing a balance in texture as you take a bite a mushy potato salad followed by a crunch of strings of carrot and cabbage. I made such smart choices in my meal selection that I gave myself a saucy high five. Lucky me, I had a sensational second experience at City Barbeque, keeping my expectations high and my stomach stuffed. read more

I had stopped by this new, nearby-IUPUI location to place a small catering order for a BBQ-loving co-worker's birthday, and ended up staying, ordering a little (or not-so-little) something for myself. City BBQ has really transformed the former retail space, and I liked the corrugated metal and wood accents; overall, nicely decorated for a BBQ spot. I also enjoyed the sauce and toppings bar, which offered three (3) of their most popular sauces warmed up...which I think is genius. If you prefer squirting room-temp sauce on your food, there are also smaller squirt bottles at each table. I chose the pulled pork "naked" with a regular drink and sides of mac & cheese and sweet vinegar slaw, totaling a little over $11. The mac & cheese tasted off to me, but was made edible by adding a generous amount of fresh cracked pepper and spicy BBQ sauce; I would not order it again. The vinegar slaw was amazing, especially for those of us who consider mayo-based slaws a personal affront. The pulled pork wasn't the best I have ever tasted, but had the telltale pink smoke ring and was pretty good, especially with copious amounts of the spiciest BBQ sauce option. It was a little too much food, which was my fault. To save money next time, I'd probably order the slaw as an addition to my pulled pork for a $0.50 upcharge. I'd also like to try out the remaining tasty-sounding sides, especially the corn pudding and seasonal Southwest black bean & corn salad. The restaurant was clean, and the food was great. The ribs (sold by the bone) were a little pink on the inside, but they were nicely seasoned. The macaroni and cheese was very good and cheesy. My wife and I live in Ames, Iowa, but we visit West Lafayette for a week or so every month to visit our daughter, SIL and granddaughter. I ordered City BBQ for delivery several months ago but have never gotten around to ordering it again until today. I'm pleased to say that our second delivery was just as good as our first-- maybe even better, because the minor mistake made the first time (they forgot some gravy) was not repeated on our second order, which was not only prompt but completely accurate. And the food was excellent. This time I just ordered lunch for me and my wife, rather than dinner for all five of us, My brisket sandwich, which I am coming to think of as my go-to meal here, was absolutely delicious. At ten bucks for a sandwich with no side dishes included, it may have been a couple of dollars more expensive than I would have liked, but, as I said in my first review, you get what you pay for, and what you get here is first-rate brisket, better than anything I have had in any other restaurant in Ames or the Lafayette area. The sandwich was piled high with it, as well. The first time around, my wife (who is not as fond as I am of BBQ) didn't have any food from here; she had something else she wanted to eat. This time around, I got her an order of cornbread pudding, which she loved; she found that a single order (which looked to me to about six ounces total) made a nice lunch for her. (This was three dollars; they also sell a pint of it for nine dollars, but I'm wondering if you wouldn't get more by ordering three individual orders. I may be wrong about the size, however.) There is a restaurant in Ames that sells cornbread pudding, but they put jalapenos in it, which wrecks it for us, since neither of us like spicy food. The corn pudding here was not spicy, and was great. I also ordered my wife a couple of mini cornbread loaves to save for the future. She hasn't eaten them yet but they smelled wonderful. One tip: if you are ordering two entrees, each with a side, get the two sides on the same entree rather than one on each; you save a dollar that way. We visited City BBQ (June 2018) and found it to be a fantastic haven of smoked meats and friendly vibes. The lady at the cash register (who has worked there for years - a good sign) greeted us like we were old friends. She was helpful (since it was our first time) and gave us a 1st time visitor gift of some rub seasoning. Nice touch. You order at the counter and our food all came within just 3 - 4 minutes. The brisket was leaner than I'm used to but I liked that it wasn't swimming in fat. The 10 or so sauces to choose from made it just perfect. The sides of vinegar cole slaw (amazing!), hush puppies (a little tough but quite flavorful), green beans and corn pudding (with roasted corn!) were all very good. There's a laid back vibe in the place with quiet music, tv's on the walls, a residential view and local college (IUPUI) paraphernalia hanging here and there. Where to even start? The sausage? The brisket? The potato salad? The peach cobbler? There are really too many options, but since all of them are phenomenal you really can't go wrong! I was lucky enough to meet the founder, and sample their most popular items (thanks, Yelp!). Never in my life have I ever ordered ribs from a restaurant, and to be honest I didn't think I was missing much. But oh Lord, City Barbeque has shown me the way! I think the sausage and the full-cut brisket are tied number one in my book, with ribs close behind. Their meat is smoked to perfection, and I was one of the lucky few who got to go behind the scenes and see where it's done. You can tell how much heart and soul they put into their food; just hearing the owner talk about his inspiration and ideas for opening a barbecue joint 15 years ago, you can tell how much he cares.
